I'm always up for a crazy comedy and this totally delivered on that front, so much so that I was surprised to see it not credited as a comedy on any major movie website. Whatever the case, I totally dug the whole living, breathing nightmare vibe that the film was going for with its Delicatessen-like sets and strange Overlook Hotel type events as the hotel owner protagonist here sets his world on edge by letting a guest stay for the first time in months.

Very hard to review. Something of a puzzle film, with rudimentary yet haunting animation. 7/10
Is that this film - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2251275/reference/ - from Hungary? Looks intriguing if so despite the lowish IMDb score.
It is. The rough animation could be a dealbreaker for some, personally I found it added to the lynchian atmosphere... At times it feels more like an illustrated radio play, or an crudely animated storyboard. But at 78 minutes it's short and intriguing enough. Storywise, think the cosmic scene from 2001 meets Primer.

Strangely enough, this story of a bunch of guys wandering from bar to bar made me think of Cassavettes... But at a slower pace.

Stories about morals are among my favourites, this one was solid, although a bit heavy-handed and the cinematography was ordinary

15. The Silences of the Palace (1994) - Tunisia
A young woman in mid-century Tunisia returns to the place she grew up, a large estate belonging to a rich family, where her mother was a servant. She remembers her adolescence there as one dominated by class divisions and unspoken sexual abuse. I imagine this was a groundbreaking movie in Tunisia when it was released. Unfortunately, I found the narrative and filmmaking a bit torpid.

16. The Worthy (2016) - UAE
I had low expectations going into this, and they were easily exceeded. This is an effective post-apocalyptic thriller.

24. Ahlaam (Iraq, 2006) * 106 min.
A look at the 2003 war through the experiences of a doctor and psychiatric patients. The atypical qualities of the characters and the disjointed storytelling as a result of the flashback structure tend to lessen the impact of the violence.

25. Hamlet Goes Business (Finland, 1987) * 89 min.
Clever, funny adaptation in glorious black and white.

26.` The Song of Home (Japan, 1926) * 51 min.
A drama directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, commissioned by the Ministry of Education, to encourage rural youth to continue working on the farm rather than
going to the city to try to better themselves. Curiously, it actually discourages them from proceeding beyond elementary education to high school.

34 - The City Without Jews (1924) - 7/10 - Austria - Inflation has hit hard, their money is worthless, and people are gathering in the streets so politicians in Utopia (Vienna) decide to expel all the Jews as a cure for all that ails the country. Things initially seem to go well, but that soon changes. This satire seems to reflect the time it was made fairly well. The author of the book the film was based on was murdered by a Nazi and screenings of the film had problems as well. It's a good film, though it seems pretty mild compared to what was to come in real life.

A brothel madam manages to negotiate for her girls to stay on rather than be kicked out when US troops take over their strategically located hotel in this Dominican Civil War drama. There are several curious side characters including a trans prostitute and a lesbian revolutionary. For the most part though, this just feels like an endless catalogue of how horrible Americans can be when invading other countries. There is also a pretty horrific roof death scene.

Kanchana Sita
20. Govindan Aravindan, 1977, 87 min, India
A very personal interpretation of a story from the Ramayana, with no actual epic or awe-inspiring displays of divinity whatsoever, it suggests to me more often than not an imaginary ethnographic documentary interested in contemplation of the portraits of the tribals (that play the mythological characters), often listening quietly to nature (a depiction of goddess Sita), their wanderings, rituals and occasional philosophical thoughts. 6/10

This film about menopause and incorrect hormone patch dosages didn't do a lot for me as a narrative, but as a mood piece, is pretty neat. Her apartment looks absolutely amazing, frequently shot with dark blue filters and the occasional bit of neon. In fact, there is a fair bit of neon, particularly in the scenes set at night. Her work colleagues are an interesting and very varied bunch too, and at less than 80 minutes, this is a pretty breezy watch overall.

5. A Married Couple (1969) - Canada - 8,5/10
Even just after one year of my own marriage, this hit so close to home that it nearly shattered my windows. As raw and naturalistic as a documentary can be, we can see the Edwards family in their worst and the best and the most mundane moments, but their marriage is clearly a bumpy road with no happy end in sight. They basically fight or bicker for everything possible, but at the same time we can see their vulnerable human side, their imperfections and their quirky sense of humor, and it's hard to not like any of them, but it would be equally hard to give them any useful advice, since they often both seem right in their statements about each other.
It's never gonna be anything marvelous between the two of us. And if we change for somebody else, it's probably gonna be another whole set of problems that i can't even think of. It'd be just the same with them. So the best thing is stop dreaming about it being wonderful. And if you can at least stand the sight of each other, put up with it and try to make a life for yourself. That's all.

I'm not really comfortable with religions that basically say that we are captive souls struggling to escape corrupt matter and return to the light. But if you leave your grudge behind, it becomes an enchanting, mesmerizing watch, somewhere between Chris Marker and Forough Farrokhzad. Too short!

21. Martín Rejtman, 1999, 93 min, Argentina
This is more like a filmed writing game where the main goal seems to be intertwining over and over trivial facts, coincidence and little absurdities in the lives of three couples of friends and exes living in Buenos Aires, amusing to some degree for a time but ultimately leading nowhere. 5/10

29. Præsidenten (Denmark, 1919) * 84 min.
My favorite film by Dreyer so far. I would have preferred a different ending, but this was true to the characters, their religion, morality and society, and therefore the most honest ending under the circumstances.

Clearly inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, this Tunisian oddity circles around a soldier who encounters a monolith in the jungle, which empowers him with telepathic communication. There is some other stuff going plot-wise, not all of it well-explained, but this is cinematically breathtaking throughout, full of long, unbroken takes, panning aerial shots at night and tracking shots on ground level that creep around. The telepathy is also well conveyed through eyeball close-ups with subtitles, with the blinking and twitching of the eyes in question injecting a real amount of emotion into the communication.

Some gorgeous shots as if I opened a National Geographic magazine but I don't think the doc delivered an appropriate illustration of its opening quote. The technique of dividing the screen as a triptych was weirdly used too.

38. Spirala (1978, Krzysztof Zanussi) - 7/10 - Poland

Not the most original Zanussi, not the deepest either, but he always finds a way to hit home with a few strong scenes, especially in the second half of the movie. Jan Nowicki did an amazing job as well.

30. The Hare Census (Bulgaria, 1973) * 67 min.
A satire on bureaucracy in which an official and his young assistant from the city travel to a small town to count the wild hares in the district, conscripting the local men for the task and briefly disrupting the life of the town. It has low key, good-natured humor with a little bite concealed underneath.

19. A Brighter Summer Day (1991, Taiwan)
Good, but it didn't grab me the way I had hoped.

20. The Quake (2018, Norway)
I was in the mood for a disaster movie, and this fit the bill. The Flood was better, methinks. For me, this took too long to get to the actual quake, and then just as the movie was starting to get into the good disaster/survival zone, it ended. Climax was just underwhelming.

21. The Raid 2 (2014, Indonesia)
This was awesome. Pure unbridled awesome. Great action, well paced, and bloody as all hell. They actually added more of a plot into this one, as opposed to the first, so that was a pleasant bonus.

Fairly predictable stuff, with the more grisly parts very heavily foreshadowed. That said, the filmmakers' attempts to draw out the suspense with lengthy, dialogue-free shots is certainly preferable to the jump scare mode that most other evil doll films adopt. The gore is also excellent in a scene where a slimy boss becomes possessed and starts uncontrollably self-harming; the extreme low camera angles used to make him daunting early on are neat too.

17. Half of a Yellow Sun (2013) - Nigeria
The first half is pure soap opera. The second half is the Biafran War. Neither half is good. Here’s the thing about violence in a movie — there has to be something building up to it. If not, the effect is comedic rather than tragic, like when a movie gets laughs by showing someone getting suddenly hit by a bus. This movie goes from everyone is sleeping with each other to mass executions in about thirty seconds. Even beyond that scene, everything here feels rushed and abrupt.

18. Bazodee (2015) - Trinidad and Tobago
A good portion of the first 20 minutes of this movie is a bunch of wealthy young women cooing about each other’s beauty, and well, there’s no better way to convince me I shouldn’t care about a movie. The rest is a formulaic, low-quality musical. Unfortunately, trying to see a movie from every country sometimes means suffering through crap like this. The guy who played the henchman in Octopussy has a supporting role here, so I guess that’s something.

A talking-heads style documentary co-directed by Alice Rohrwacher of The Wonders and Happy as Lazzaro fame featuring interviews with youths talking about what they expect in the future. I liked the teen boys discussing getting rid of all money to solve Italy's problems, but much of the conversations became a bit repetitive for my liking, same things stated over and over, etc. The black and white archive footage was interesting though.

This sometimes feels like pure misery porn with one adversity after another befalling the protagonist, and misery porn really isn't my thing. The film's bureaucracy satire is very sharp though and I love a good bureaucratic madness tale. The corrupt social services officer is also very well portrayed, constantly berating the protagonist for making a "spectacle" of himself. And without ever actually doing that, Goran Bogdan shines in the lead role. We keep expecting him to lash out with some much anger visibly shaking him at times, but he always remains admirably controlled. Solid conclusion too.

Two young adults from Somalia who want to play international soccer for a living are followed around in this sports documentary. The movie also provides a glimpse into the impoverished country's history and the situations that have led to it being the piracy capital of the world. In fact, the film's biggest drawback is that all of this history (which includes terrorism and politics) is actually a lot more interesting than the sporting dreams of its two subjects.

38. Spirala (1978, Krzysztof Zanussi) - 7/10 - Poland
39. Baamum Nafi (2019, Mamadou Dia) - 4/10 - Senegal

Important and necessary story, unfortunately the staging is very poor, the dialogues are very weak, it felt lazy and amateurish most of the time.

40. Lingui (2021, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun) - 5.5/10 - Chad

Felt the same as Baamum Nafi here above, except that Haroun is way more experienced and probably had a little more budget so it doesn't look as amateurish, but it lacked a sparkle of life that could have lifted the movie to be memorable.

41. Vera andrron detin (2021, Kaltrina Krasniqi) - 6.5/10 - Kosovo

Fourth very serious drama in a row, but this one is more solid than the two previous ones, and has a more free/Euro-arthouse/feminist/post-modern vibe that suited me much better.
