Awdat al ibn al dal
15. Youssef Chahine, 1976, 120 min, Egypt
This must be the first Arab musical that I watch and the feeling is… well, different, not only because of the odd choreography but also the way the few musical numbers fit/clash with (I’m not sure yet) the rest of the film, a bit soapy and repetitive drama driven by the conflict between two generations/close families of different social class and the hopes pinned on a son back after a long time gone. 4/10

This is about an important topic (human trafficking) and both sets of actress do well. As a narrative though, I felt like the film only took off in the final fifteen minutes. A lot of it is just dread and a lingering sense of unease, which I found interesting at first but as the film wore on, less so. The change from them as easily scared children to mature teenagers was a minus for me too. I found the earlier scenes much more intense with them as vulnerable kids.

Rodrigo D. No futuro
16. Víctor Gaviria, 1990, 92 min, Colombia
Without a clear plot line, this looks more like scattered pages in the diary of a teenager trapped in a dreadful slum of Medellín and seeking to form (appropriately enough) a punk band, filmed in a vigorous anarchic way that uses apparently improvised shots, natural and often dim light, non-professional actors, inaudible/unintelligible dialogues and a creative (surely) low budget that yet seem more than pertinent to convey a truthful awareness. 4/10

Nice update again, blocho! If I did the math right I'm responsible for just under 25% of all 1960s films watched for this challenge (and 33% of the 1940s lol).

My 19th stop around the world is Poland

10. The Harder They Fall (1972) - Jamaica
11. I'm No Longer Here (2019) - United States
12. The Crime of Padre Amaro (2002) - Argentina

Comments in other challenges.

13. Finis Terrae (1929) - France
If this story of French kelp-gatherers doesn’t have quite as much photogenie (to use a poorly defined term) as previous Jean Epstein efforts like Coeur Fidele and The Fall of the House of Usher, it still offers a healthy dose of slow-motion, plenty of artful framing, and a gorgeous montage sequence centered around one character’s febrile nightmare. The story isn’t much. It’s kicked off by an infected thumb, which feels like a meager plot device. Epstein’s main focus here is not the narrative but rather the insular Breton setting and the remote communities that exist there. This material is gold in the hands of an artist like Epstein. He knows just how to maximize the beauty of the ingredients.

Thanks 45minutezoom + Blocho for indulging me with the list of locations.

We've done better than I was expecting, although I don't think we'll see its completion (especially if its impossible for some) - but we can sure try!

The map might not be perfect, but it's easier than re-uploading a new pic every time, but someone ought to tell them to add South Sudan and Kosovo.

Friendly reminder to put gore like this behind a spoiler tag (preferably with a warning), as it can be both NSFW and triggering for some people. Though I say that after one of my posts was kinda gory, whatever, best to play it safe.

That's actually one of the least gory scenes in the film. I have posted far gorier screenshots in other challenges and I tend to only use spoiler tags for images that are sexually explicit or spoilerific, but okay, I'll keep that in mind.

17. Tsui Hark, 1993, 99 min, Hong Kong
An adaptation of a fine Chinese folk tale about an obstinate Buddhist monk fighting two kin magic serpents (one of them played by a lustful Maggie Cheung) in search of elevation and a taste of human love, it is a pity it has that confusing beginning and such intoxicating lack of moderation in the use of photographic effects and music, to the point that some dialogues are practically obscured. 6/10

15. Bumperkleef (Netherlands, 2019) - 6/10
Image

An interesting concept that was handled reasonably well for the most part but would have been better served by just being a car based thriller like Duel or Joy Ride.

16. Bandit Queen (India, 1994) - 5/10
Image

Been meaning to watch this one for awhile but in the end it disappointed me, definitely didn't live up to it's promise.

17. Stalking Chernobyl: Exploration After Apocalypse (Ukraine, 2020) - 6/10
Image

An interesting documentary about Chernobyl nowadays but for a short runtime it felt to pack to much information into it and felt like 2 or 3 documentaries jammed together.

14. Apt Pupil (1998) - Canada
Of all the things I’ve read by Stephen King, the novella Apt Pupil is the nastiest piece of work, a febrile stew of historical trauma and serial killing, with some unsettling fantasies of sexual violence thrown in. It works as both a thriller and a warning about the dangers of treating real-life suffering as a source of fascination and pleasure. There’s some irony in such a tale coming from King. This adaptation, director Bryan Singer’s follow-up to The Usual Suspects, unfortunately bears none of that movie’s stylistic panache and atmosphere. A far less polished work, it offers little beyond King’s basic narrative (with the worst horrors excised) and some reliable acting from Ian McKellen.

Incidentally, some underage extras in this movie accused Singer of sexually predatory behavior during production. So in directing his “study in cruelty,” Singer was allegedly enacting cruelty of his own.

What begins as a documentary about the discovered love letters of a female film student soon morphs into a politically charged attack on India's right-wing government in this unusual documentary. The film boasts some simply beautiful images, especially the black and white night-time shots at the end. This is clearly intended to be seen by an audience familiar with Indian politics though, providing little in the way context, and I found it hard to get a grasp on.

Sissi
18. Ernst Marischka, 1955, 106 min, Austria
The story of Empress Elizabeth of Austria “Sissi” in her introduction to the House of Habsburg through an unexpected marriage when she was 16, simplistic and quite naive, worth watching if only for the outstanding display (topped by the gorgeous wedding celebration) of sumptuous costumes, settings and filming locations, including some on which actual events took place (Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl), and the look at the busy life of the aristocracy in those years (mid-19th century), i.e. hunting and fishing, gossiping, dancing, banqueting, romancing, etc. 6/10

This begins well with the protagonist wrongfully arrested for trafficking young girls. Then there is his rescue by the assistant of a tech tycoon who wants to him to kill an author since every ailment of the writer's antagonist is mysteriously inflicted upon him. Rather than explore how the inflictions work or how the father possesses superpowers (!), the film instead repeatedly gets lost in the author's stories coming to life in a rather dull CGI-driven fantasy world.

Never read the novella but I saw Apt Pupil in the cinema on release and it made me cringe back then; also Singer seems like a royal lowlife based on what you posted and what I'd previously read about him.

The wife of a renowned chef sets out on an ambitious all-night quest to track down and bribe a food critic here. Also in the mix is a damning anonymous letter. With these two tangents, there are the right ingredients here for a stressful thriller - but the filmmakers opt for a flashback-heavy romantic drama in which the wife's crusade constantly reminds her of how she met her husband. The film looks pretty great either way at least with tons of neon lighting.

Interesting - I liked it. I didn't love it. Was totally complex, but one I'd happily revisit.

18. The Summit (2012, Ireland)
This is a documentary about the deadliest day on the K-2 mountain where 11 people died. This is their story, a recounting of their events, and features footage shot in the moment. As a film, this was in desperate need of a better editor, but it was still an interesting story of a mountain climbing disaster, if you're into that sort of thing.

Kona fer í stríð
19. Benedikt Erlingsson, 2018, 100 min, Iceland
Drones, mass surveillance, media manipulation (i.e. lies), politicians submitted to the economic growth rule, racism, climate change, the race between China and USA to control natural resources, even war in Donetsk (before it was decided to be an affair of the utmost world public interest), all combined in a call for radical action across the streets of Reykjavik and the Icelandic desolate landscape that leaves me doubting if there are solutions to this century. 6/10

This is another of those weird cases -- I've already counted Portugal, but IMDb lists Brazil... I'm actually surprised I didn't hit a "real" Brazilian film earlier in the course of my normal viewing. (I'm also surprised China and Italy haven't crossed my path yet...)

Very hard to review. Something of a puzzle film, with rudimentary yet haunting animation. 7/10
Is that this film - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2251275/reference/ - from Hungary? Looks intriguing if so despite the lowish IMDb score.
