7. Au bonheur des dames (1930) * 88 min.
A big new department store versus a local textile shop, with the niece of the shop owner going to work in the department store and becoming romantically involved with its owner. A Zola novel transferred to contemporary times, with excellent direction by Julien Duvivier in service of a biting critique of contemporary capitalism.

A sentimental comedy/drama with orphan Jackie Coogan taken in by junk dealer Max Davidson, with effective performances by both.

82 - War is Hell / Maudite soit la guerre (1914) - 7.5/10 - A pilot is visiting friends in a neighboring country, studying with their pilots and falling for his friend's sister. When war is declared between the two countries, he returns home and does his duty, though he bears no malice toward the people he is fighting. A pretty good film, especially for its time.

83 - The Dance of the Paroxysms / A Dança dos Paroxismos (1929) - 5/10 - A knight who failed to find the Holy Grail is heading home to marry his betrothed when he gets sidelined by sylphs. I thought the actor who played the knight was pretty lifeless and the film didn't do much for me.

84 - Miner's Luck / Rudareva Sreca (1926) - 6/10 - Miners are lured into the mountains with tales of treasure hidden there. A successful mine operation is set up and a romance occurs between one young miner and the daughter of another. There are long stretches where not much really happens, but we do get some nice scenery and scenes of mining and railroads.

85 - Garras de oro (1927) - 6/10 - The film is critical of U.S. policies in Panama. The U.S. policies in Central America were still suspect for much longer after that.

86 - El húsar de la muerte (1925) - 6.5/10 - This biopic covers the last few years in the life of Manuel Rodriguez, a revolutionary in Chile early in the 1800s. It's not bad.

87 - Jánošík (1921) - 7/10 - The film relates the legend of Juraj Jánošík, a Slovak seminary student who became a highwayman early in the 1700s due to an unjust lord and his servants. Overall, I thought it was good.

Shhh, no talking please

Solomon Sir Jones Film 1-Film 29 - (436 minutes) - These home movies were kind of cool. It was interesting to see people and the way they dressed from nearly a century ago, though many of those scenes got a bit repetitive after a while. The street scenes, sports scenes, and videos from various vacation spots - Paris, NYC, Marseilles, Nazareth, etc. were more interesting. The cars and other vehicles plus the stores of that era were cool to see.
The Butcher Boy (1917) - (25 minutes) - Arbuckle and Keaton
Leave 'Em Laughing (1928) - (22 minutes) - Laurel and Hardy
80 - Wara Wara (1930) - 6.5/10
81 - Man of Gold (1919) - 6.5/10

7. Underground (1928, Anthony Asquith): 8.0

8. Lonewolf's Buster Keaton Shorts box Part III (14m leftover + 14+23+22=85m - 80 = 5min leftover)
Moonshine (1918): 5.8 (23m) - Kudos to Fatty for experimenting by doing some fourth-wall breaking meta-commentary in the intertitles, alas it doesn't really work well. Rest of the movie is a mixed bag with again some better use of filmmaking techniques and plotting than earlier Fatty shorts, but still with plenty of unfunny slapstick.
Good Night, Nurse! (1918): 3.5 (26m)
The Cook (1918): 6.2 (26m) - should have been called the Dog, cause the dog steals the show.

1. Finis Terrae (1929)
If this story of French kelp-gatherers doesn’t have quite as much photogenie (to use a poorly defined term) as previous Jean Epstein efforts like Coeur Fidele and The Fall of the House of Usher, it still offers a healthy dose of slow-motion, plenty of artful framing, and a gorgeous montage sequence centered around one character’s febrile nightmare. The story isn’t much. It’s kicked off by an infected thumb, which feels like a meager plot device. Epstein’s main focus here is not the narrative but rather the insular Breton setting and the remote communities that exist there. This material is gold in the hands of an artist like Epstein. He knows just how to maximize the beauty of the ingredients.

Time to fill in what I have been watching out the last couple of weeks.

4. Assunta Spina (1915, Francesca Bertini, Gustavo Serena)

I'm really happy I finally watched Assunta Spina, and I can see why it is held up as a classic. The filmmaking is vibrant and alive, and the acting takes a far more realist approach than many contemporaries. It's main hindrance is the overt melodrama and personally struggling to buy the "love story", but this is a thoroughly good film, and I can't believe it took me this long to get around to it. 7/10

5. Aibu / Caress (1933, Heinosuke Gosho)

A very middling work from Gosho. 5/10

6. Die selige Exzellenz / His Late Excellency (1927, Wilhelm Thiele, Adolf E. Licho)

Thiele disappoints a little in this film that could have been far more visually daring and playful. The basic concept of the prime minister dying, and everyone turning on his presumed mistress until she lies and pretends he wrote memoirs that could reveal EVERYONE's indiscretion is a dynamite basis for a story, but the acting and even direction feel flat and a bit subpar. The film is cute and amusing, but so much more could have been done here. Highlights includes the dream sequence and an inventive scene with the foam of the corrupt civil servants' beers spelling out their secrets. 5/10

7-9. Gossette (1923, Germaine Dulac) 297 minutes

When I found out that Dulac had directed a crime serial a couple of years ago I had no idea what to expect, especially as this came out the very same year as her expressionist The Smiling Madame Beudet. Sadly, beyond a few interesting visual touches, this is a fairly standard serial, with a perfectly alright story, held up by a good director, but it is no House of Mystery (1924), and there is no general awe. It was a perfectly pleasant viewing, and it is interesting in part due to how late in the first episode we are introduced to our heroine, and how it changes focus/emphasis on characters in the early episodes, but it is in the end fairly predictable and obvious. Entertaining, certainly, but you would not know it was by Dulac if her name was not listed in the credits. 6/10

10. Le coupable (1917, André Antoine)

In terms of filmmaking I have to give André Antoine his due, the film feels very much like it could have been made 3-5 years later, but the story itself is preposterous and frustrating - centered on the prosecutor in a case coming to the accused defense because, hidden to all, he is the father. The film then spends its time retelling his love story with the young man's mother, and the life of the son growing up in poverty without a father, placing the blame on himself. The concept itself is laughable, but the filmmaking makes it durable. 5/10

11. Dragus (1929, Paul Sterian)

A perfectly adequate documentary of life in the Romanian countryside. No real frills or even artistic intentions or ambitions, but an interesting document in and of itself. 5/10

95 - Sparrows (1926) - 8/10 - Mary Pickford stars as Molly, the oldest of a group of orphan children who are used as slave labor on a farm deep in the swamps of the south. A new baby is added to the mix in the form of the kidnapped daughter of a wealthy family. There are a number of hijinx as well, often involving the bratty son of the grizzled old farmer. Pickford is good here and I thought it was fun. The journey through the swamp was done pretty well.

96 - The Temptress (1926) - 6.5/10 - Greta Garbo stars as a woman who uses her looks to manipulate men. The film was okay, though I didn't really warm to the story much.

97 - The Golem: How He Came Into the World (1920) - 7/10 - A Rabbi in 16th Century Prague creates a creature out of clay to serve as a protector for the Jewish people. The film was good, but I didn't like it as much as many seem to.

9. The Song of Home (1926) * 51 min.
A drama directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, commissioned by the Ministry of Education, to encourage rural youth to continue working on the farm rather than going to the city to try to better themselves. Curiously, it actually discourages them from proceeding beyond elementary education to high school.

100 - The City Without Jews (1924) - 7/10 - Inflation has hit hard, their money is worthless, and people are gathering in the streets so politicians in Utopia (Vienna) decide to expel all the Jews as a cure for all that ails the country. Things initially seem to go well, but that soon changes. This satire seems to reflect the time it was made fairly well. The author of the book the film was based on was murdered by a Nazi and screenings of the film had problems as well. It's a good film, though it seems pretty mild compared to what was to come in real life.

This gets me to the century mark. I've got a few more features lined up to watch and the rest will probably be shorts. I'm also watching non-challenge films so we'll see how many I get through.

Based on a Zola novel, it's King Lear transferred to rural France, with a wealthy aged farmer dividing his property between his three children. Almost all of the characters were grotesque and unlikable.

A view of sexual misconduct by the upper class, unremarkable today but it may have upset some in Imperial Russia (and similar societies) in its day.

12. Præsidenten (1919) * 84 min.
My favorite film by Dreyer so far. I would have preferred a different ending, but this was true to the characters, their religion, morality and society, and therefore the most honest ending under the circumstances.

This leads to an extensive flashback about a jealous barber who is obsessed with a pretty manicurist who works at the barbershop. The acting is good and the camerawork and story are as well.

Or you could find a 1 or 2 minute short on ICM and just use that to get it up to 80 minutes. There isn't that much time left in the challenge.

Yeah I could. But than it won't be Lonewolf's Buster Keaton Shorts box anymore ;) Also I just realized I forgot to count One Week because that was a rewatch. So...

10. Lonewolf's Buster Keaton Shorts box Part IV (total 86m: 3+ 20+25+19+19=86 -80=6 min leftover)
The 'High Sign' (1921, Buster Keaton & Edward F. Cline): 7.2 (20m) - This was actually Buster's first movie not directed by/with Arbuckle, but was released only later when he was out with an injury cause Keaton thought it had too little of his own voice yet Which I don't agree with him, from the title card gag this already is so much more clever and better written than all Arbuckle shorts. And much more like what is to come than what became before.

One Week (1920, Buster Keaton & Edward F. Cline): rewatch: 7.5 > 7.5 (25m)
Convict 13 (1920, Buster Keaton & Edward F. Cline): 6.8 (19m)
The Scarecrow (1920, , Buster Keaton & Edward F. Cline): 7.5 (19m)
