The results can be found as a list at:
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/icm+ ... /gromit82/

A list of all films receiving votes can be found at:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls561717782/

A vote for the following film was not counted because IMDb lists it as being from a different year:
UFO's (1972)

In addition, four ballots were not counted because they didn't include lists of URLs (not including another post where the person intentionally omitted a list of URLs).

I hate to be that guy (again), but even though you acknowledge my list as being unranked, looking at the points for Aaeon for example, I suspect you've counted it as ranked.

Thanks for hosting anyhow.

You're right. I left out the unranked indicator for your ballot when preparing the spreadsheet. I'll recalculate the results and repost them when I get a chance.

I have since corrected the original post to treat insomnius's ballot as unranked as it should have been. Hopefully everything is correct now.

Thank you so much for hosting, Gromit!

Seeing this list compared with the 1962 poll we just did is quite telling given how few non-english language films are on top. Only 1 in the top 10 vs. 7 "last time". It is often said that the 60s was the Decade of "international cinema" and that the 70s was the decade for American cinema, and at least judging by these results, that is very true.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with the results, especially Walkabout ending up in the top 3, and nice to see Shura and The Devils just outside the top 10. I would have hoped that The Panic in Needle Park would have done better than 34th after more than a decade of promotion, but then again, maybe it would have been 60th otherwise.

I'm more surprised that the apparent forum favourite, Reality's Invisible, which is in the top 100 of DtC and the top 200 of 500<400 only got 4 votes. Parts of that can be blamed on Perception (!) choosing not to have his list counted, but it should have gotten more votes.

Also very fun to see Out 1 edging at a lot of close runner-ups for best French film. That was unexpected.

I had also hoped to find time to rewatch Love, as I it was my first Makk and I may not have been fully ready for it at the time, but sadly I did not get around to it. Hopefully, I will before the 1971 poll rolls around again.

Anyhow, my stats:

73/83

My unseen films:

57. Nicholas and Alexandra
61. La maison des bois
64. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
67. Godzilla vs. Hedorah
68. In the Name of the Italian People
74. Lawman
79. 'Tis Pity She's a Whore
81. Just Before Nightfall
82. Socrate
83. Basic Training

Of these, Chabrol's Just Before Nightfall is the only one I have had ready for viewing and been meaning to see for years. I love Pialot, so I will sit down with La maison des bois at one point as well. The rest I'm not that certain about, including the Rossellini as I'm just not excited about this stage of his career/his late biopic TV films. In the Name of the Italian People may on the other hand be pushed up a little in my watchlist after these results. I do like (though not love) Risi and he has some very good films. Basic Training is another film from a director I mainly just like that could be interesting. As for the top-ranked film, Nicholas and Alexandra, I will get to it eventually. I don't actually know why I have held it off this long as Schaffner is a fairly good director. It is likely just a like rather than love, plus 3-hour runtime issue.

Nice indeed to see the Kaul do well here. The way he films interiors and creates a mood is just remarkable and compelling. I was very glad to see your high placement of the film as well.

Thanks to gromit for the results!

I was hoping to watch it before submitting my ballot, but yesterday was unexpectedly busy. I'm sorry that I didn't find time to squeeze it in as it's certainly one of my most anticipated titles for 1971!

King Kubrick strikes again, and not even close. I still would have love to see Out 1 to see what the fuss is about.

Not the worst top 10 everything considered. But weird it only being English language films. That's not very common for this period in film history (and yes, Death in Venice is mostly an English language film), but it seems none of the big non-English language auteurs of this time didn't have any big films out in '71. We have Rivette's Out 1, but that is very much an acquired taste, and though Quatre nuits d'un rêveur is one of my favorite Bressons it sure isn't for many other people.

Thanks for the results!

So about 3 months later I finally added the write up on iCinema: https://icmforum.com/2022/12/06/top-50-films-of-1971/

:D

Feel free to share.

Not had a lot of time recently sadly, if anyone feels like writing up our poll results (or do any iCinema stories), let me know and I can give you access.
