I've heard it said that you have to watch a lot of Godard to understand Godard and I guess I can't say I've watched enough yet. But I'm getting glimpses, I think.
This one is on my list to watch later this year. I've seen 3 Godard films so far. I liked Band of Outsiders, but was underwhelmed by Breathless and Alphaville.

I enjoyed the tale pretty much but was a little disappointed at the length. At only 89 minutes a lot of the scenes could have used a lot of fleshing out which stopped the movie being a massive hit.

8. Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020) - 7/10 - 21st Century #300 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7772582/

If you were looking for some great drama that tugs on heart strings and ties up all things in a nice clean bow, well then this movie isn't for you. If you are just looking for some sort of simple story that in the end left so many questions unanswered, well than this was exactly that. The debut performance of the lead actress was outstanding in what was a pretty nice little film.

9. Sicario (2015) - 6/10 - 21st Century #841 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3397884/

Impressive film but I did get a little bored with it, just overall not fully in my wheelhouse.

10. Dangerous Liaisons (1988) - 7/10 - 1001-2000 #894 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094947/
Image

The costumes and settings were beautiful and the acting was superb (though I still don't find Glenn Close that attractive) though a few times I got a little confused with who was who and what was going on though but it didn't take long to put things back in order. In looking up details of the movie I have found that Cruel Intentions, a big favourite movie of mine, is based on the same story whichmakes a lot of sense and is probably why I enjoyed this a fair bit.

11. Bound (1996) - 8/10 - 1001-2000 #882 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115736/

Firstly I have to say I thought I knew what to expect from a Wachowski's film but alas I was wrong, this is nothing like any of their movies that come after. My only real complaint is that we didn't really get to develop the characters before everything started to go down. The relationship between the two main characters just happened and then we were on to the heist. When the heist was mostly through I thought the movie was nearly over so I checked, only to find out the movie was half way through, and that's where the movie kicked into gear. Other than that 1 complaint I absolutely loved this movie.

23. Winter Sleep (2014) TSPDT 21st Century, #288

Decided to watch this when it was on the IMDb 2010s list. By the time I got to the film it had fallen off the list. Still a Palm d'Or winner and Turkey top list entry, so I don't feel I'm wasting my time or anything like that, but just a tad disappointing I don't get the 2010s progress as well.

This was a long one. Had to break it up into two nights to finish it. Interesting experience to be sure. Did seem to be doing something different from many other films. Not sure if I liked it exactly, but it's always nice to see something new. The long conversations featured in the film (there are about 5 different conversations that all go on for 15+ minutes each throughout the runtime) really allow the audience to immerse themselves in the characters and their (conflicting, self-biased) perspectives.

24. Bande à part (1964) TSPDT #588

Two quotes for this one:

Amy Taubin of the Village Voice called it "a Godard film for people who don't much care for Godard." That seems about right to me.

Godard described it as "Alice in Wonderland meets Franz Kafka". That does not seem right to me at all.

10. Force Majeure (2014)

11. Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988)
A family of working-class Scousers: three kids, a mother, and a violent, volatile father who inspires trepidation and hatred in his children. This is the immediate postwar era, so entertainment is often limited to the music they make themselves. There are plenty of singing scenes, and not a whole lot else besides arguments and some random discussion. The movie is composed of perfectly framed shots of domestic interiors that seem to erase the boundaries between photography, tableaux vivants, and moving images. In addition, an extraordinary sense of claustrophobia pervades. Almost every shot is an interior, and even the exteriors give no sense of space. We never glance the sky. It takes thirty minutes to see a shot in which there’s an object more than thirty feet from the camera lens. When we as the audience are drawn into the cinematic space, we don’t end up in a city or even on a street. We are trapped in small rooms, in narrow apartments, in crowded pubs. Sound and image often proceed on parallel tracks. Snatches of conversation play over random shots of empty rooms. The overall effect is minimalist, even ethereal. We don’t so much see a story as drift randomly through a hazy gauze of memories. All this adds up to a compelling cinematic experience but not a narrative one. There’s barely a glimpse of work or school or cultural institutions or government or wider society. Everything seems to exist at home or in pubs. Maybe half the movie is just people singing songs in groups. And no matter how common such recreation was, I scarcely think it was the full extent of life in postwar Liverpool. Still, between the excellent camerawork and superb acting, there’s a lot to like here.

25. Mephisto (1981) TSPDT 1001-2000, #418

This was a strong film. The lead performance really was astonishing, Brandauer gives it his all. And honestly, a pretty resonant film for the times we're living in as well, with the trend of backsliding towards nationalism. All of us will be tempted, and there doesn't need to be a devil holding a contract for it to be said you've sold your soul.

That's it for this challenge for me. Thank you for hosting Melvelet!
