Thanks Apu. You're right, the 1987 should be added. I'll check with the other mods about whether the 1959 film should be removed or not.

Noted. Thanks cayh. I've brought it up with the other mods.
I take it this is still being discussed by the mods? I'd love to see these added. If it's the same author, the series does seem to have a lot of consistency, even if there has been a shift in the publishing website. Scott Tobias' New Cult Canon has a good ring to it.
Yes, and yes changing the list name is part of the discussion.
A decision has been made, and the list has now been updated to include these titles. The first three are all new official checks.

The name of the list will also change, but Marijn needs to do it in the backend (and adjust the badges and other things), so it will happen later. I also updated the blurb to include an updated summary of the project and links to the reviews on both sites (A.V. Club & The Reveal).

Ebby, the moderators do what we can, but we cannot fix everything. I get that this bug bothers you immensely, but repeatedly complaining about it on this forum isn't going to solve the problem. I know you've reported it on the other forum and that Marijn is aware of the issue - there's not much to do but wait for a fix. I don't know what else to tell you.

btw, in my humble opinion .. well, I would do it just the other way round. Everybody knows A.V. Club, and for half a decade and with over 90% of the list, the project is a work tied directly to their famous website. But who follows a list because it is authored by Scott Tobias?
So I, personally, would keep the name as it is and just add a disclaimer to the description that the Cult Canon was continued by Scott independently since 2021. I would do the same if it ever happened for, say, TSPDT Noir 1000 or a list by BBC or Taschen or something.
But that's just me.

AV Club is a shell of its former self and Scott Tobias was a big part of why it became famous. So the answer to your question is, probably a significant amount of people.

Yeah, I agree with PA on this one. Scott Tobias is part of the group of critics (coming from the A.V. Club) that founded The Dissolve, now defunct but fondly remembered, and who still have The Next Picture Show podcast going on, and the A.V. Club has gone down in infamy with most of the known writers still working for them quitting a few months ago. I do agree that the A.V. Club is a much more recognizable brand than Scott Tobias obviously, but it's not like he was just some unknown staff writer either.

I got my laptop back today. Going to have to buy a new one :(

But at least I can still use the internet on this one for the time being.

I'll update the Criterion, MoC, and Time Out lists now before I go to bed. I was indeed waiting for a response to a second question for that last list, but I'll just go ahead and make the switch since it's unlikely anyone else will reply there.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

It should, yes. They were both updated in the last 24 hours.

@ P.A. / mods, is it possible to increase the check threshold in the imdb sports list to 1500 like the rest?

I can understand the 400 checks mininum for the documentary list but for the sports list I think it's too low.

Interesting proposal. I think the 400 check limit probably made sense when the curated imdb lists were implemented, but it does seem like sports movies have gotten more exposure over the years. Keep in mind, though, that it's not just an icm check threshold, but also an imdb vote threshold (1000 votes currently vs. 5000 votes for most other imdb lists). I think noir also has the lower threshold, and there are different thresholds for mini-series, shorts, and the older decades.

This would be the imdb source for the proposed list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls058832880/? ... type=movie

If the proposal were to be implemented, the change would be as follows:
Out:
#7 (496 checks) 8.2 - Paan Singh Tomar (2012)
#8 (547 checks) 8.2 - Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)*
#9 (576 checks) 8.1 - Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992)*
#16 (571 checks) 8.1 - Iqbal (2005)*
#26 (475 checks) 7.8 - Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962)*
#31 (1215 checks) 7.6 - Shelter (2007)*
#34 (1131 checks) 7.6 - Body and Soul (1947)
#35 (492 checks) 7.6 - Gentleman Jim (1942)
#36 (1450 checks) 7.5 - King Richard (2021)
#40 (582 checks) 7.5 - Waves (2019)*
#44 (1420 checks) 7.5 - Redline (2009)
#45 (935 checks) 7.5 - The Harder They Fall (1956)
#46 (907 checks) 7.5 - Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)
#47 (1368 checks) 7.5 - This Sporting Life (1963)
*films that only appear on the imdb sports list and would become unofficial

In:
#37 7.5 - The Freshman (1925)
#38 7.4 - The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)**
#39 7.4 - Molly's Game (2017)**
#40 7.4 - The Natural (1984)
#41 7.4 - Green Street Hooligans (2005)**
#42 7.4 - Miracle (2004)**
#43 7.4 - Hoosiers (1986)
#44 7.4 - Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)
#45 7.4 - The Black Stallion(1979)
#46 7.3 - A League of Their Own (1992)
#47 7.3 - Jerry Maguire (1996)
#48 7.3 - The Karate Kid (1984)
#49 7.3 - Coach Carter (2005)**
#50 7.3 - Southpaw (2015)**
**films that would only appear on the imdb sports list and become official

I'm not sure if the switch would bring about a list of better quality or not, but if enough people think a change is warranted I can take the proposal to the rest of the mods.

Yeah. I've seen 5 films on the as-is list shown, and 6 on the if-we-changed-it list, so I'd gain 1 film - but I'd lose two official checks. One of those would be for Waves which IMO is better than anything I've seen from the second list.

But hey, it wipes out a few more Bollywood films that hardly anybody on this forum is itching to see so I guess that makes it cool, right?

Isn't that kind of the point of the IMDb lists? Some of the films that would drop off were quite good, for sure. But a bunch also were not. If anything, it would make the list more American, and therefore less diverse.
