Year-by-Year Polls: 1962 (CLOSED)

#1

Post by Teproc »

Welcome to the Year by Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 1962.

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. You can also list other films outside your top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1962 (unless a specific film has been otherwise declared eligible).

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but for ranked ballots, your list must be numbered. Partially ranked lists (where a certain number at the top are ranked, and the rest are unranked) are allowed. Please make sure that what you mean to do with your list is clear.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1962, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot cannot be counted if the IMDb urls are not included. (And if you list only the URLs but not the films' titles, you'll significantly reduce your fellow voters' enjoyment of this poll, so please make sure to include both titles and URLs.)

- Please note, you must post your URL list yourself rather than having someone else do that for you.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points, and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, etc. You get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

Really excited to do 1962, as it is one of the early years in what I hold to be the greatest period in cinema history.

The early 60s is an interesting part of this equation as many of the key new waves that would colour this period (Cinema Novo, New German Cinema, Czechoslovakian New Wave, etc.) were either in their earliest stages or had not yet begun. Even so, and in large part courtesy of France and Japan, both their New Waves and the outside studio films ensured that the year is filled with wonders - and the USA was certainly stronger than I recalled as well.

The depth of great cinema here is wonderful and there are so many films that would easily make my top list from almost any year from the last decade, that miss out here. Quite mad that neither Bresson's The Trial of Jean of Arc or Tengiz Abuladze's Me, Grandma, Iliko and Ilarion can find spots in my top 20.

1962 also happens to have 3 films in my all-time top 100.

My top 20

1. Die Parallelstrasse / The Parallel Street (1962, Ferdinand Khittl)

ICM
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

DELIBERATELY EXCLUDED TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD - Not seen in full for 50 years , no affection for it, I susoect it will do well anyway -

PREDICTIONS? Without having checked other ballots I'm guessing LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and THE MIRACLE WORKER will do well. LIBERTY VALANCE is a buff fave. The Godard and Polanski will do well on the Foreignian front

OBSCURITIES

DISORDER is a portmanteau movie with the central episode the real draw - Jean Sorel, Antonella Lualdi & Louis Jourdan feature

A GIRL NAMED TAMIKO is essentially LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDOURED THING with Laurence Harvey as Han Suyin. Because it is Harvey he is cast not as a noble widowed Anglo Asian lady doctor determined to remain untrammelled by romance (even by a hunky cynical unhappily married war correspondent) but as an opportunistic ambitious Half Chinese/ Half Russian photographer toying with Martha Hyer's fur coat no knickers US embassy set Princess for the visa she can bring.... :D

Huh. What are those crazy years in brackets. Will you stop confusing us for once, Matthew. :D

Parallelstrasse really is a sleeper cinephile hit, right? Under 200 IMDb votes, 550 LB logs; has it been popularized last decade by MUBI or what happened there?

Spreadsheet malfunction.

This is actually one of those few times where I can claim to have been really influential, I got the filmmuseum dvd about 10 years ago on a blind buy knowing nothing about the film except the blurb on the dvd case was intriguing and fell in instant love (2 May 2011). Then I got other IMDBers watching it. And now it's in ICM 500<400 and DtC :) I'm pretty sure I was responsible for Gloede and Perception watching it. Human film archive Insomnius will probably inform me that I was a second or third wave proselyter :D

I found this one super duper weird, watched it a few years ago, seems very religious but at the same time really fetishistic and exploitative, I remember the camera lingering on chained flesh. Interesting choices as always, I will look out for the Saucan one.

The things you mention are not a negative for me, but I thought you'd figured that by now. In a film about Sodom and Gomorrah I think it's quite fitting as well. I just really loved the look of the film in HD on a big tv, and watching it around Christmas might have helped my mood for the biblical.

As for Parallelstrasse, I'm pretty sure I took it as a recommendation from you. Both you and OldLaLaAle made me discover many fine things in my early days as a cinephile, back on FG.

I'll see if I can help you with the Saucan tomorrow or so.

hehe, I expected they would not be a negative for you, they aren't for me either, I'm going to give it a rewatch though I'd much prefer to see it in the cinema. The actual biblical story has Lot offer his two virgin daughters to a mob in order to prevent two angels from being raped. Strange indeed. It would be fascinating to see someone like David Lowery have a go at the story.

I found the poster for Saucan's Meandre on eBay today, a favourite of mine, what a find! I have an aqua themed living room so it will be going in there. Keen to see another of his!

I went to the actual archive!

(of FG3D, my old email/account has seemingly been deactivated so had to create a new one to get in)

And ...

Image

You wrote the very first review of Die Parallelstrasse on April 23rd 2011, followed by a few more mentions in best of the year, decade, seen last year threads before you nominated it for DtC.

That's how Scott / Serriform saw and reviewed it in 2012. I on the other hand seem to only have caught wind of it when you posted your top 500 with reviews, and it is quite clear I saw it because of you as my thread about it was called "I just watched the most fascinating film thanks to Matthew Scott"

The result in DtC this year (2012) was: Die Parallelstrasse (The Parallel Street) 5,20-5

This means at least 2/5 saw the film because of you, and 1/5 was you. :D

Minor note: The very first post including a mention of Die Parallelstrasse from a 2010 posted by Love Thy Monkey, where he compiled lists from a Best Films of the 60s threads
into a compilation list - but on inspection, you are the voter (the next year) and he just edited his post.

Somehow, by 2013 Die Parallelstrass got into the DtC with a 4,33 from 9 voters.

Obviously, at this point, there was still a lot of activity on FG1 as well, which may have driven some action, quite likely due to you. I made posts about it here, but got no responses. The thread I made on FG 3 just had you, me and Scott - who had all seen it + Magenta Bob who said it sounded awesome, perhaps he was inspired. I hope I at least inspired someone to see it ...

We did get it onto the top 100 of the "From the Depths of Obscurity" complimentary list to FG's Top 1000 back in 2012, which may have garnered more attention - and that was mainly on FG1.

Nice to see you back Aussie - the temptation to vote for LAWRENCE too much I guess! - Your fan club on imdb2 classic board has missed your contribution there. Come and say hi if you get time
