In recognition of Juneteeth, a movie about the Gullah people. I had paused it about 40 minutes in to read some reviews to understand why it wasn't clicking. It's one of those movies that challenged my basic notion of how cinema works. instead of a traditional narrative movie, this is more of a tone poem that effectively communicates the emotion and concept of a portion of the Gullah population moving to a new location but how they are still connected because they view time as nonlinear.

26 - The Roaring Twenties (1939) - 7/10 - TSPDT 1001-2000 #579 - Three buddies return from WWI. Cagney finds his job as a mechanic is gone so he becomes a cab driver and later a bootlegger. He becomes involved with another of his war buddies (Bogart) and is enamored with a singer (Priscilla Lane). It's a fairly standard gangster film in some ways, but is still pretty entertaining.

27 - Aparajito (1956) - 7/10 - TSPDT #632 - Apu and his family have moved to the city, but the father is ill. Apu and his mother later move to the country and Apu is able to get a decent education and earn a scholarship. This is a good film, but I liked Pather Panchali a bit more.

28 - A Short Film About Killing (1988) - 7/10 - TSPDT #723 - A young man arrives in Warsaw and seems bent on causing trouble. He strangles a cab driver and is defended by a lawyer who just recently passed the bar. I did like it more than Kieslowski's A Short Film About Love, but not as much as the acclaim it seems to get would warrant.

29 - The World of Apu (1959) - 8/10 - TSPDT #334 - Apu has graduated and dreams of being a writer, but has no job or money. He gets talked into marrying a girl and things go well for a while until the don't. I think certain things could have been developed more, but I did like this one more than the earlier parts of the trilogy.

I lost focus a few times during Water-Mirror of Granada but I liked it enough all the same. The film has some fantastic images that – true to the title – use bodies of water as mirrors with the reflected surfaces shown with ripple distortions and so on a la Mirror of Holland. The non-reflection parts are pretty nifty too with some sped-up footage and tinted black and white shots, but I wish that this engaged me more so that I could work out what was going on.

When watching A Corner in Wheat, I kept "forgetting" that I was watching a film from 1909 rather than 1919 because the film looks really, really good (thoughtful editing transitions and framing) for a pre-1910s flick. This novelty factor aside though, it is a bit difficult to subscribe to the film's apparent greatness. There is a real dearth of title cards, but rather than this moving the plot along more smoothly, it actually makes it harder to follow.

79 primaveras is pretty unusual for politically slanted brief doc, consisting of no voiceovers or interviews but simple statement title cards and mostly still photographs that are zoomed in and out of. Innovative as all this is, I found myself more interested in the film form than any messaging involved, to the point that I was often "forgetting" to read the title cards between the weird zooms in and out. Not sure if this could be chalked up as a positive or not.

I'm not sure what exactly Schwechater is meant to be, but without looking it up, I would say that it is a series of ink blot tests committed to film – or at least that's what it feels like. With an annoying beep-beep every so often, it is hardly as hypnotic as it perhaps could have been, but I did like how relatively quick all of the images were, moving from one shot to the next before it is really possible to decipher just what is being shown.

Perhaps the earliest ever example of a fan-edit movie, Rose Hobart was very intriguing, and probably my favourite of this bunch. Ostensibly, the film is a shortening of a Rose Hobart movie to include only her scenes, however, there are also a lot of cutaways to the scenery and other such things that provide quite a bit of atmosphere. Indeed, between purple tinting of the print and absence of any dialogue, the whole thing is really quite atmospheric.

I went with Devil in a Blue Dress for exactly the same reason, it just doesn't qualify for this challenge.

I liked DotD - but I totally get why you paused to read reviews. Padma Lakshmi did an episode on the Gullah culture for her show Taste the Nation, which I had seen before DotD, so I think I was able to connect with it a bit more easily because I had seen that and learned a bit about the culture. It's a unique film and definitely worth a watch.

Not sure what to fully make of this. It's unfinished, and I feel like it's only on official lists because of what it could have been. The costumes, set pieces, and environment are pretty amazing, but it features too much of that early cinema style where a character looks into the camera and emotes to conversations which is just cringingly bad.

Frustrating. This has so many elements to make it one of my favorite movies. Haven't had a chance to update the thread for a while, so here's a big drop of films I've watched over the last ~week:

8. Flags of Our Fathers (2006) TSPDT 21st Century, #561

9. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) TSPDT 1001-2000, #376 & TSPDT 21st Century, #189

I watched Eastwood's twin films on consecutive days. Like most, I did prefer Letters from Iwo Jima to Flags of Our Fathers. But this was mostly down to the strange choices made in the latter from a narrative structure standpoint. It tells the story nonlinearly, which didn't really add much, but did make it very hard to follow who was doing what, and when. Also, spoiler alert for FoOF, but it turns out that 2 of the 3 main characters in the film were not even part of the group of six who actually raised the flag in the first place. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raising_t ... n_Iwo_Jima

10. The Princess Bride (1987) TSPDT #815 (rewatch)

Theater near me had a showing so I thought I would catch the screening. The theater was PACKED. A lot of quoting along with the film, which I can deal with, but there were also some people who felt like it was a good time to go full MST3K, which soured my experience. Still a good time overall, but it has been a few years since I last saw this and some of the shine came off, just a little.

11. In the Realm of the Senses (1976) TSPDT #337

This watch got me the bronze on the Controversial movies list. I was prepared for the nudity and sex, but I did not realize this was based on a true story or that their would be so much kink involved, both of which were unexpected. Overall I'm glad that a movie like this exists. It definitely stands apart from just about every other film I've seen regarding sex. Not going to make my list of favorites, but I don't regret watching it.

12. Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) TSPDT #439

Reminded me of Easy Rider quite strongly, but I much preferred this one. It was pretty funny to me that the film tried to have a plot (a car race across the country for pink slips), but then spent the remaining hour just meandering around, as none of the characters seemed remotely interested in the plot the movie tried to create for them.

13. Star Wars (1977) TSPDT #117 (rewatch)

14. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) TSPDT #284 (rewatch)

Also showing in the theater was the original Star Wars trilogy. I've never seen these in the theater before, so it was a real treat to catch them over the weekend. They were the "special" editions, so they had the unwelcome CGI creatures sprinkled throughout, which just look worse and worse as time goes on. But still a great experience to see all three of these on the big screen. My appreciation for Episode IV held steady, Episode V ticked up just a smidge, and Episode VI stayed right were it is as the weakest of the three but still a fitting end to an epic trilogy.

15. Russian Ark (2002) TSPDT #404 & TSPDT 21st Century, #38

Of course the one-take of it all is interesting, and it does add to the dreamlike, lyrical nature of the film. But what I liked the most was just getting to see all of the paintings and architecture in the Hermitage.

Abbas Kiarostami shows a strong understanding of and ability to work with young boys in both fiction and documentary movies. Without voiceover narration or title cards, this acclaimed documentary from Robert Gardner drops us in the centre of a holy Indian city where the locals go about their lives without reacting to the fact that they are being filmed. The ambition is certainly admirable with Gardner asking us to merely observe, though without narration, title cards or even subtitles when the locals speak, becoming immersed in the world of the film is not particularly easy.

30 - Shoah (1985) - 8/10 - TSPDT #72 - A powerful 9.5 hour long documentary about the Holocaust with interviews of numerous survivors and also some of the Germans and others involved with the camps or trains.

31 - Midnight (1939) - 7.5/10 - TSPDT 1001-2000 #330 - Claudette Colbert is a nightclub singer who arrives in Paris with only 25 centimes to her name. She is helped out by a taxi driver (Don Ameche) and later is thought to be the wife of Hungarian baron by members of their aristocracy. It's a nice enough film and fairly entertaining. The best parts are when Ameche and Colbert are together.

32 - Mirror (1975) - 7/10 - TSPDT #28 - A man in his 40s reminisces about his life. I thought the film had really nice cinematography and parts of the film were interesting, but overall I got a bit bored with it. Tarkovsky films haven't really been my thing.

33 - Paris, Texas (1984) - 8/10 - TSPDT #233 - A man walks out of the desert in Texas, seemingly mute and with memory loss. His brother starts bringing him back to himself and the reasons for his four year absence eventually come out. The film is kind of a slow burn, but is pretty good.

The director of Where Is the Friend's House? (a documentary?) tries to get to Koker after an earthquake with his young son to check on the fate of two of the young boys who appeared in that movie. The lines between documentary and fiction film and between what is happening in the real world and what is happening in this movie become increasingly blurry, with the real earthquake footage, the raison d'être of the movie, surrounded by the fictional narrative.

Infernal Affairs is one of the very finest Hong Kong films of the 21st century - but this is arguably better. With a lengthier runtime, the remake digs deeper into its characters and creates stronger parallels between the two moles. The performances are exceptional across the board too - most notably a scared and paranoid Leonardo DiCaprio and a downright fearsome Jack Nicholson who has seldom been more intimidating. The music choices are also perfect.

This was downright eerie upon revision knowing where everything would go. All three actors are spot-on, but Alex R. Hibbert, who plays the protagonist as a boy, is especially well cast with very deep and haunting eyes. He also makes a terrific contrast to the actor who plays him as an adult as the film causes one to ponder how we are all essentially the same person at various stages of our lives with our experiences merely shaping us in different ways.

This boasts many of Ken Russell's trademark excesses but the narrative here really resonates upon revision, involving a priest accused of witchcraft under unusual circumstances. We are initially positioned to loathe Oliver Reed's corrupt priest between his rule-bending to allow himself to marry and the way sexually repressed nuns fling themselves at him, however, he ultimately becomes the most sympathetic character as he Kafkesquely persecuted.

38 - Performance (1970) - 4/10 - TSPDT #223 - A gangster who is on the run hides out in Mick Jagger's basement while trying to find a way out of the country. It's a pretty odd movie and not one that I really enjoyed, except for bits here and there.

39 - Napoleon (1927) - 8.5/10 - TSPDT #179 - Gance's film is epic in scope and yet only covers until 1796 and films about the rest of his life didn't get made. There are a lot of cool techniques employed in the film and I liked both actors who played Napoleon (as a youth and as an adult).
