An interesting fantasy story, yeah it could have had a lot more to it and the Horror was barely there but still a good watch.


2. Jungfrukällan (1960, Sweden) - 7/10


It took me a few movies but I'm finally becoming a Bergman fan. I have had a good run of his movies the last few I've watched and I'm really starting to get his appeal.


3. The Neon Demon (2016, Denmark) - 6/10


I have been eyeing off this one for a while but I was a little afraid it might be a little to artsy for me (a habit a lot of Elle Fanning movies have despite the fact I enjoy her work and keep trying). Yes the movie was artsy but it wasn't too bad. Elle was absolutely gorgeous in it, which I guess you would expect since she was playing a model, der. I didn't really feel the horror though in the movie, yeah it got a bit horror-like near the end but I don't think I would classify it as a horror per say. Still the movie was an OK experience and didn't go as bad as I felt.

His borrowed flying carpet stolen, an Arabian boy enlists the help of a girl thief to retrieve it in this animated comedy that often feels like a lesser version of Aladdin with a clever goat sidekick in lieu of the monkey. The film is mostly enjoyable while it lasts though - and there are so very funny moments. Particularly well done is a sequence in which he confuses an elderly jailor. Not all the humour lands though with some fat-shaming and flatulence gags too.

Unsure who is behind a series of threatening emails targeting them, four female researchers begin to turn on and suspect one another in this thriller that it is sadly a lot less interesting than it sounds. None of the characters are particularly likeable or fascinating to follow around as they all-too-quickly turn on each other. The pacing is alo way too fast for the dialogue-heavy approach that the filmmakers opt for. The project boasts excellent stringy music at least.

The first 23 minutes here follow a woman eerily becoming a patient in mental asylum after seeking shelter there one night, before the film cuts and we realise that this whole section is a movie being made by a tired film crew. The plot soon thickens as the crew discover a series of snuff movies their latest location and then realise they are being recorded by a third party and are part of a horror/snuff movie. The acting is poor but the meta stuff here is fun.

Called to fix the frozen pipes at a retirement home in the dead of winter, two plumbers discover the task unexpectedly challenging in this minimal dialogue comedy. On one hand, it is about them getting distracted by the quirky residents; on the other hand, it is about them having trouble fitting ladders into small rooms (as above), creating icicle xylophones and dropping snow on cakes. It's all kind of amusing but way too random and episodic to really resonate.

The building setting is perfectly creepy here with lots of darkened corridors and lights that ominously buzz and flicker. Aspects of the building eerily defy physics too as a mop goes over rather than under the glowing dust on the ground - and the whole way the film is shot with daunting low and high camera angle close-ups is divine. At the end of the day though, not everything about the film makes sense even if all of the various eccentricities are memorable.

This has some truly uncanny moments, including one brother going on a date with a psychologist to score a free therapy session, cast iron pots whacked on men who emerge uninjured and cruising for nookie at a retirement home. The film tries to build up to a shocking reveal though, yet it is easy to guess what is going on long before the characters realise it. That said, there is ample weirdness going on here with hybrid animals and facial reconstructive surgery.

Two neighbouring couples begin to bicker over a backyard tree, only for things to soon spiral out of control in this pitch black comedy. The film also has a secondary plot involving one couple's son going through a messy separation, which feels odd at first, but it soon gains more relevancy and the contrasts between the two plots are really interesting. Id a little over-the-top, everything works here satirically, and the final shot is a killer with very eerie music.

Curiously structured, this Danish horror film constantly cuts between two female gas attendants getting nervous one dark night and flash-forwards of them later bound and tortured. The structure provides a constant sense of dread, knowing the whole time through that they will be abducted. The torture scenes offer nothing more gruesome or grisly than the horror genre has offered us in recent years, but the film's portrait of characters on the edge is gripping.

This Norwegian coming-of-age tale is far less quirky than it sounds. It is actually much more of a drama than a comedy, which does not work for the better since young Odin Eikre is a fairly expressionless in the lead role and the supporting characters are one dimensional stereotypes - particularly a gang of bullies. The bullies' eventual comeuppance is amusing though in a karma sort of way. The ending is pretty great too and crazier than one might expect.

Aside from the fact that I would find living in a situation like that to be absolutely hell on earth, this was pretty enjoyable. I appreciated a lot of the absurdist situational humor - like the woman who was Winnie-the-Pooh-ing it arguing with her roommate/ex-husband about whether it was OK to be completely bottomless in the common area of the house, so he takes off his pants to continue the argument... when the new family with their kids walks in. Surprisingly fun, I thought.

4. The Man Without a Past (2002, Finland) 6/10
As popular as amnesia is as a plot device, this one actually handled it well - it made sense, and showed the struggles of trying to rebuild your life from absolutely zero. Sweet enough, but a tad slow for my tastes.

The premise has promise and this is relatively interesting at first, however, things become far less enthralling when the gangster reach their cabin. The fact that they are hiding out and on the run is soon forgotten with little suspense or paranoia. Instead we get pointless cow cruelty and lengthy sentimental flashbacks as they remember their childhoods and reconsider their lives of crime. Topped off with a maudlin final couple of lines, this did little for me.

Convinced that his wife died as an innocent bystander in an assassination made to look like a freak accident, a hardened soldier goes on a revenge quest here. While several sources cite the film as an action comedy, this could not be further from the truth: it is a fairly humourless tale, while the action is infrequent - and more jokes and a high action ratio could have really gone a long way. That said, some of the human drama at hand certainly hits home.

The premise is decent here with the characters constantly rationalising and talking out bizarre occurrences at the title lake. The dialogue-heavy approach though gets in the way of the film building up terror and atmosphere. There is also a lot of psychobabble and supernatural babble with talk of unwilling mediums - and then there is a lengthy explanation given in a veritable speech at the end. The lake certainly looks eerie though in luscious black and white.

While much of the humour is in questionable taste, full of exaggerated stereotypes and lame cross-dressing, this works for the most part since everyone is very devious here. Both Marcin Dorociński and Gwen Taylor excel as the respective killers for hire in the mix, especially Taylor with her posh British mannerisms and frequent attempts to set the wives on edge. The filmmakers seem to struggle though with finding a great way to wrap up the proceedings.

The crime drama that inspired the terrific Canadian thriller The Silent Partner, this is fairly engaging while it lasts but stands clearly in the shadow of its remake. The approaches are quite different though, especially the second half with less interplay between the teller and the robber, neither of whom are as charismatic as Elliot Gould and Christopher Plummer. The film acutely capturing the awkwardness of the protagonist's predicament though for sure.

With a plot involving two butchers who start selling human meat as specially marinated chicken, this Danish comedy is a lot less funny and less grotesque than it sounds. The film never really focuses on their luring of victims or cooking of human bodies. Instead we get a lot of family melodrama with an estranged brother, dead relatives and relationship woes in the mix, none of which is ever as engaging as the central idea - threatening toy giraffes aside.
