The problem with films basically made in the last 10 years, and to a wider extent one could argue even last 40 years is that it is hard to compare those with much older films, it's like a different category. I agree with that there are some hype, commercial or highly anglicanized films out there but yes, i can't change anything about it.

Haven't seen Mad Max: Fury Road, can't judge about that

I wouldn't say any of those films in particular are bad, but some feel a bit out of place, and for example Interstellar and Inception are like films with interesting themes or concepts but that like would have made the list anyways even if they were quite different, and that the reputation of the director has been a bit overblown. Like if Interstellar just had a different name as director, people would already rate it lower for that alone.

Personally i do like the subject of Interstellar a lot, and it is interesting to watch, but this is the feeling i have with the film, and i don't think it makes the right touch with regards to the topic (knowing a lot about space might ironically be a disadvantage for me - watching that film - than for someone who knows a lot less, i have noticed that about a lot of films in themes that interest me, because you become more critical or have more of a defined idea of what it is, and if it isn't like that, you're more likely to enjoy it less).

I have never really had an issue comparing different films, be it from different genres, countries, movements or eras together, and I don't think there are that many drastic or clear cuts if we look at the progression of cinema. There is certainly a big change between silent and sound, and even if you compare classic Hollywood to modern Hollywood there is quite a massive change, but the same can be said when you compare an animated film with any other film, an arthouse or indie film with a blockbuster, etc. or just films from drastically different cultures. Films are made in different contexts, for different audiences, and the conventions, styles, etc. often differ between time periods, countries, movements, genres, budgetary limits and so on, but it is all still film.

Pleased that this beautiful sci-fi is trending in the right direction. I cried so hard watching it, which is something very few films have done to me. Nolan has a few films I'd call masterpieces, but this one is my favorite.

Saw this in the past year and was blown away, so my 82.73 points helped it rise.
They certainly did; overall it's notable that the film rose steadily since 2012 (even with all the leaving/changing voters). Is this an ICM-local phenomenon - it's also in the ICM Most Favorite List! :ICM: - or did The Swimmer generally got more attention / re-release / something else over the last decade? :)
Still gotta see it.
It was selected for the forum World Cup Season 2 back in 2015, which likely helped it gain exposure and corresponds to its jump from 1243 into the Top 100 at 728. I'm sure there were other factors as well.

Lakigigar wrote: May 26th, 2022, 9:31 pmI wouldn't say any of those films in particular are bad, but some feel a bit out of place, and for example Interstellar and Inception are like films with interesting themes or concepts but that like would have made the list anyways even if they were quite different, and that the reputation of the director has been a bit overblown. Like if Interstellar just had a different name as director, people would already rate it lower for that alone.
I don't think that films are rated highly by people just because of the name of the director. Name recognition and director fandom is definitely how they got to be seen by a wider audience than most films, and also what helped them to get big budgets and be released on a lot of screens. If anything, name recognition is more likely to cause higher expectations going into a film that are left unachieved, causing a lower rating. The only instance I can think of where people would rate on name only is when trolls downvote a director's film and then fans upvote it in response to the trolling, but I'd like to think that's not as prevalent as some consider (hopefully).
