13. 2.5* - Hit Team by Jing Wong (2022/China)

Jing Wong trying to reinvent himself as a streamer king. I have no clue what his goals or plans are, it feels almost surreal to see a guy with his stature throw himself at the streamer market. But alas, here we are. Hit Team is a generic action flick that perfectly embodies the streaming platform filler requirements, and clearly Wong is there for it. The Long family has been running their crime syndicate for quite some time, though they made sure to never get involved with drug trafficking. The Japanese are trying to enter the Hong Kong drug market and Jason, next in line to run the syndicate, made a deal with them. The police are on Jason's tail, but he has more targets on his back. It's good to see that Jordan Chan is still around, the finale is decent and the pacing/runtime are perfect. That's probably the biggest selling point of these films, as they tend to be short and to the point. The action scenes are mediocre though and the plot is extremely generic. It's difficult to imagine Wong will be able to make his mark here, but at least it keeps him busy.

Wuxia filled with sexually themed comedy about an average guy who through luck and daring amasses a lot of money, politcal power, kungfu power... and wives over two movies. As a trope of the genre the intrigues come fast, and keep coming. So it is best to watch these back to back in order not to get lost completely (a not perfect English translation in combination with the fast pacing and wordplay happening makes me already lose a large part of the fun I think). I liked the second movie better; not only because it adds Brigitte Lin and Michelle Reis in the mix, but the comedy is a bit less cringy overall, even though in our current times it will be percieved as very bad taste. I still had fun with this.

65. The Tunnel Warfare (1965) China

Image

Set in 1942, this war drama focuses on a group of villagers who build a series of tunnels to help them overcome invading forces. The film is technically well-accomplished with lots of shots of moody, overcast skies (see above), tracking shots inside the tunnels and thoughtfully distributed close-ups of hands grabbing dirt. Characterisation frequently takes a back-seat to showy set pieces, and ultimately there are no characters who we get know as individuals.

This stacks up better upon rewatch with Pei-Pei Cheng in fine form as a female swordsman attempting to rescue a kidnapped brother. The first inn scene in which we see her in action is especially spectacular as she deflects benches thrown her way and attacks from behind, all while never losing her composure (see above). The film's biggest weakness is the fact that she disappears into the background in the second half as she becomes wounded as a guy takes over.

If you're following the money, you're not entering the streaming market, you aim for the Chinese blockbusters. These streaming films are pretty low-budget affairs.

11. Xiao quan guai zhao [The Fearless Hyena] (1979, Jackie Chan, Hong Kong): 7.2 - In his directing debut Jackie Chan shows he already had a good grip on what his own strengths are and the kind of movies he wants to make because of that; action movies with a lot of humor and acrobatics. Sure as a comedic kung-fu movie of its time it's indebted to Drunken Masters, but that's also cause Drunken Master was partly thanks to Chan himself the first to really capitalize on his Chan's strength. The Fearless Hyena on top of that offers also more acrobatics, f.e. in a scene in which he has to move from on pot to the other while his master is constantly shifting them. In that regard it closer to the films his Chinese opera big brother Sammo Hung was also making already.
The film is about Jackie being a goofball who is ordered by his grandfather to keep his kung-fu skills hidden, but Jackie trying to make some money by secretly working at a kung-fu school. This leads to his grandfather old nemesis finding them out and killing grandpa, which of course leads to grandson seeking revenge. The first hour is mostly comedic. Not all comedy work, especially all the wordplay which is lost in translation. The fights tho are fun, with Jackie running circles around his opponents, constantly dodging, rolling, jumping etc over them, dressed up as caricatures, in one instance even as women. The last half hour after grandpa's death is continuous entertaining training sequences and fights.

3. Raise the Red Lantern (1991, China)
A movie about concubinage is almost inevitably a movie about sexual politics and exploitation. So it is here, in this story of a young woman, recently impoverished by the death of her father, who becomes the fourth wife of a rich man and settles into life as a kept woman, entirely within the walls of a large compound. What sets this movie apart are some of the stylistic choices. For example, the “master” of the family is often present but not closely seen. We hear his voice while his face is obscured or photographed from distance or at an oblique angle. Courtyard scenes are shot from above to emphasize the enclosed nature of the lives of the concubines. And the colors are highly saturated to the point that the film looks overexposed at times. The result is a feeling of a world apart, outside of space and time, a bit of a labyrinth, where lives are cosseted but also closeted. Aside from a few opening shots, we never leave this world. Occasionally, some trees can be glimpsed in the distance, but that is all. All of this underscores the movie’s exploration of familial and social arrangements, bound within strict tradition and hierarchy. It’s an impressive cinematic achievement.

4. The Mission (1999, Hong Kong)
This crime thriller desperately wants to be cool and sleek but mostly doesn’t manage to be either. The action scenes aren’t that compelling, and the movie also fails the way all mediocre action movies fail, with tepid dialogue, uninteresting characters, and a formulaic plot. Also, a remarkably bad score.

With only a week to go, we are entering the home stretch. flavo has crossed the century mark and only needs 4 more films to set a new record for this challenge. As a group, we have watched 461 films which is good for fourth place in this challenge. However, third place is 2020 with 476 and 2nd place is 2019 with 482 so we should easily pass those totals before all is done. First place in films watched is 2018 with 804 and I don't think that we will be challenging that total.

Unwatched years remaining (since 1927):

1928 1929 1931 1938 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1958

I have films lined up for a few of those years and hopefully I can get to them.

31 - Mulan Joins the Army (1939, China) - 7/10 - A good adaptation of the Mulan legend with music and comedy mixed in with the drama. Nancy Chan was also good as Mulan. (Zhizhi Zhang makes an appearance of course, though not in a major role)

Chang Cheh and Jimmy Wang Yu's first collaboration after the success of The One-Armed Swordsman, this is disappointingly less an action film and more a slow paced drama following a young man who gives up at a chance at love to become an assassin. In his assassin role, he certainly gets some decent action scenes, and coming to a blood-spurting fight dressed in white is always a bold move. That said, the action scenes are relatively few and very far between.

14. 3.0* - The Iron Coffin of Western Xia by Jing Wong (2022/China)

Another Chinese Sherlock Holmes. There are so many Chinese genre films appearing these days, that it is nigh impossible to keep track of how everything fits together. So much in fact that I had no idea whether the intro of this film was a recap of previous entries in a franchise, or just a rushed introduction. Not that it matters a lot. Song Ci is a legendary detective who solves every case he gets assigned. The case he is currently handling is a tad trickier, as it involves royalty. The death of a king has the potential to disrupt a brittle peace between nations, so Song Ci has to be extra careful not to step on any toes. Some supernatural elements are making things even harder for him. This is another basic streamer film, though with a tighter focus on crime solving. The performances are a bit all over the place, production design is decent but clearly on the lower end of the budget spectrum, the plot is rather convoluted, yet everything is neatly explained at the end. Nothing out of the ordinary, just some decent entertainment.

If you like the Song Ci character, you might be interested in Judge of Song Dynasty (Song Ci is the main character).

But seriously, sol, it's remarkable how you manage to write such insightful, well argued, well written, but still short and therefore extremely easily readable reviews for every movie in every challenge. I always try to read them all. Keep up the great work. :worship: :worship: :worship:

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

As per the title, there are some great "sleeping fist" kung fu moves here that consist of fighters comically yawning and closing their eyes to deter opponents. The film is actually at its best in its non-martial arts bits though. The opening scene is especially amazing with a street urchin riding a unicycle while escaping the clutches of a street vendor who he later forces to eat a rotten banana (!). The kid-bashing plot is odd, but the characters are great.

The mythology at hand varies between dull and confusing here, but this works okay as a tale of a child trying to fit in with some great scenes of the demon kid protagonist attempting to play with others, believing it is an elaborate game of hide-and-seek when others away in fear. The animation is decent too with cool glowing lava and fire effects in the mix, though most of the animation is spent on silliness such as having an allergic reaction to kissing a toad.

A young man cons others with a fake wooden knife and by pretending to be possessed in this action comedy. The film was the directional debut of Liu Chia-Liang and there is much more focus on comedy here than action, unlike his better known films. That said, the disappointment here is that we see very little comedic trickery and deception beyond the fake knife. There is also a weird love interest in a woman with short hair who he mistakes for a man.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

flavo has set a new record for this challenge by reaching 110 and still has five days to build on that record. shugs has made a big leap into the top 10 and is tied for 8th place. sol has filled in the gaps and has watched films from 1959-2021, leading the bonus challenge with 63 years. We've also moved into second place for this challenge in total films watched as a group with 496. Hong Kong films should easily cross 300, but Taiwan seems to have little chance of reaching the century mark.

Unwatched years remaining (since 1927):

1928 1938 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956

32 - Red Heroine (1929, China) - 6.5/10 - A young woman is kidnapped by an invading general and his minions. She is going to be forced into his harem, but is rescued by a martial artist who then trains her. Three years later, another young woman is being forced into a similar situation after her father is accused of treason. The Red Heroine now returns to get her revenge and save the second young woman. I thought it was decent for its time.

33 - The Peach Girl (1931, China) - 7.5/10 - A couple who work on a farm have a daughter and plant a peach blossom on the day they bring her home. The girl is the same age the son of the mistress who owns the property and the two children become friends. When they grow older, they fall in love, but the mistress sees class distinctions and refuses to allow their relationship. It's a pretty good melodrama and I enjoyed Ruan Lingyu's performance as the grown up 'peach girl'. Jin Yan was also good as her lover.

The film mostly feels like a random collection of comedic events strung together. There is something to do with counterfeit money and cop Jackie Chan's pursuit of the fraudsters involved, but this angle never really gels with the central five characters (all former prisoners) and their shenanigans. Their comedic highs are excellent though, notably tricking Richard Ng into believing that he is invisible, plus Jackie Chan's athleticism is as awesome as ever.

An unplanned monkey kung fu double bill

12. Chu long ma liu [Stroke of Death/Monkey Kung Fu] (1979, Mar Lo, Hong Kong): 6.5 - In prison Ching meets a one-eyed master, who gives him a wooden keepsake before being executed, and tells him to search for the other half. Shortly thereafter Ching breaks out of prison chained up with another inmate and goes in quest of the missing piece to discover its secret. Of course there also some baddies after the keepsake. This is the kind of comedic kung fun in which the plot and characters really take a major backseat to the action. The villains are such caricatures, I wondered if this might be meant for a younger audience. After the duo escapes the the extremely slight plot is just an excuse to have the a succession of lighthearted acrobatic fights with each other or with various characters they bump into. These fights are not the best in the genre, but if you like this kind of comic kung fu movie it’s a fun way to spent 90 minutes.

13. Za jia xiao zi [Knockabout] (1979, Sammo Kam-Bo Hung, Hong Kong): 7.5 - Meant as the launch of 3rd brother Yuen Biao this at first glance again is again a lighthearted comedic kung fu movie about two petty criminals getting into troubles and wanting to learn kung fu. But in closer look has interesting subversive elements. Firstly Yuen Biao and his partner Leung Kar-Yan clearly are petty career criminal, who don't want to learn kung fu for some righteous reason but to take advantage of it in their criminal pursuits. Secondly in an especially for Chinese culture major subversive twist their master actually turns out to be the murderous ruthless killer. So while the characters and plot already offer more of interest than common (more than f.e. the movie above), what secures that is worth a watch are the first rate fights. Like said this was meant to launch Yuen Biao and het gets amble opportunity to showcase his breathtaking skills.
Because of a mistake I received two copies of Knockabout, and Eureka let me kept the spare one. Now because I like you all so much and many in this tread are fans of kung fu movies also; the first to pm me can have my extra blu ray copy for free! (Shipping cost on your own expense of course. It is region B.).

Widely considered superior to Armour of God with good reason, this follow-up is better paced with a clearer plot and equally impressive stunts. Best of all though, Jackie Chan is allowed be himself here; while the opening sequence is indebted to Indiana Jones, this is generally closer to an action comedy than an adventure drama - and action comedy is of course Chan's forte. There are also lots of exciting moments with a giant industrial fan near the end.

And that unlocked a Bronze award for me.

15. 1.5* - As Time Goes By [Qu Ri Ku Duo] by Ann Hui, Vincent Chui (1997/Hong Kong)

The handover is by far one of the most impactful events in (semi)recent Hong Kong history. The ripples of that moments are getting stronger every day, so I figured it might be interesting to see how the Hong Kong people felt about this historic moment back when it actually took place. That's not really what Hui's documentary is about though. Instead, Hui takes a trip down memory lane. Interviewing herself and some other people, you get a talking heads doc where the interviewees are mostly digging up old memories. These are mostly personal memories, so unless you've lived in Hong Kong, or you're a big fan of human interest, it's really not that interesting. The doc is only an hour long, but it still feels a little random and aimless. Hui tries to span the 40 years under British rule, it just doesn't really translate well. Some interviews are more interesting than others and the short runtime makes sure it's not a complete fluke, but I was hoping to see something more insightful.

Rewatched for the first time in more than fifteen years, this stacks up well. The basic plot is intriguing, involving a mole in a crime gang and a mole in the police force, both of whom are tasked with finding each other out, but beyond that the film is a really neat look at personal identity. It is cinematically well accomplished too with awesome slow pounding music and an amazingly intense scene of tracking out of a cinema complex. Also, what an ending!

July Challenge: none
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
