Who actually in their sane minds considers Green Mile a...classic? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Just to respond: I did vote for The Green Mile in this Favorite Movie Poll (at #106 apparently), because it’s a favorite. A classic? No, I wouldn’t go that far at all. It’s a film with an emotional tug, that hit the right notes on viewing, and which gives me good memories upon reflection years later. .... I’m not searching for objective truth here, just personal value, and The Green Mile definitely holds value for me.

If we were all just picking films that we could argue were "classics" or "masterpieces" or "broke new ground" our list would look even more like TSP or S&S than it does, and it's already filled with recognized classics.

Never mentioned that we should mainly support classics, but this argument reminds of a university academic's thesis

I mean if films like The Green Mile are considered a classic, why shouldn't Toy Story be.

Who actually in their sane minds considers Green Mile a...classic? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Just to respond: I did vote for The Green Mile in this Favorite Movie Poll (at #106 apparently), because it’s a favorite. A classic? No, I wouldn’t go that far at all. It’s a film with an emotional tug, that hit the right notes on viewing, and which gives me good memories upon reflection years later. It definitely didn’t break new ground, or do anything that hasn’t been seen before or since (and probably done better by more accomplished directors, actors, screenwriters, cinematographers, etc.) But it’s stuck with me through the years, and still resonates enough to find a place on my favorites list. Will it stay there the next time I watch it? I’m not sure. But if I can call to mind specific reasons why I loved a film once upon a time AND why I still love it now, I’ll find a place for it on my ballot.

As for what specifically works for me in the film, Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan both give moving, affecting performances (obviously, in my opinion). The death penalty, Christianity, and racism are examined with care and pathos (Again, I 100% understand this won’t be the conclusion for every viewer). As an American in 2022 I’m very aware of how fragile human rights can be in this world. I think TGM has helped me think and feel about these issues in different ways, and given me language to speak to others about these issues where other films might not.

Lastly, I find the end of the film to be quite haunting, and that it goes somewhere I haven’t really seen in any other film. It widens the focus and says to me, these personal stories that might seem sad for a 3 hour movie, or even for the span of one death row inmate’s sentence? Oh, they are so much more far-reaching than that. What is the true cost and impact of hatred, indifference, or love, both on a individual and institutional level? And how long might those effects truly linger?

Anyway, that’s a pretty rambling response from me that I typed up on my phone. I’m with you that this is not a classic or a standard bearer of the medium. And I’m sure that many viewers will find it unpalatable. But I like to think I could write up a similar, personal defense of every film on my ballot. I’m not searching for objective truth here, just personal value, and The Green Mile definitely holds value for me.

I don't hold The Green Mile as highly as you, but I would frankly disagree that it is not a classic. To the extent that 90s films can be considered classics it is certainly one of the most beloved from the decade, and for, frankly, fairly good reasons as, within the context of mainstream Hollywood and general 90s classics it is probably one of the films that are the most groundbreaking. It is, for instance, a very rare example of magical realism in Hollywood, and uses these magical elements to create an emotionally strong contemplation of the justice system and the death penalty. It is also one of those few larger than life dramas of the period, with a rather spectacular cast, strong performances and while it can be punished for in some ways being too sentimental or too light/simplistic in some areas, these critiques do not cut that deeply, at least not in my mind.

Interesting, I will agree with many of our Forum users that this was a great film, but it wouldn't spring to my mind as one of the highest-ranked features from the last decade - and that already for 5 years. The ICM list presence* is also rather humble, compared to, say, Under the Skin (2013) or Boyhood (2014) or Mad Max (2015), all of which were instantly recognized as contemporary canon. Call me a bit surprised, albeit not in a terrible way.
* .. not that this should play any role for anything.
