29-48 - Bonanza Season 1 (1959) (1600+ minutes with bonus features)- I used to watch reruns of Bonanza when I was a kid, but I'd never watched it from the beginning. It's a nice western and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Television shows were certainly different back then with 32 episodes at 50 minutes each (34 episodes in seasons 2-6,8,9).

142. Silent Men (1933, D. Ross Lederman) - 4/10
--- They did the dark and suspenseful approach to this Tim McCoy western. and it worked fairly well, much helped by cultured actor J. Carrol Naish as the key character. Could possibly have needed more flashes of action, but at least they tried something a little bit different for the Silent Men (1933).


143. The Whirlwind (1933, D. Ross Lederman) - 3/10
--- I love that they made Tim McCoy get in the ring and wrestle, but The Whirlwind (1933) was otherwise a overly standard B-western with a weaker than usual finish.


144. The Prescott Kid (1934, David Selman) - 3/10
--- As the 1930s progressed Tim McCoy's westerns regressed. I'm not saying The Prescott Kid (1934) doesn't have anything to offer, but it's an example of his films becoming more standard and less adventurous.


145. Fighting Shadows (1935, David Selman) - 3/10
--- Tim McCoy changes his cowboy outfit for the Mountie uniform in Fighting Shadows (1935). The production looks fairly rough and there's little about it that's original, but with Ward Bond and Si Jenks on support it becomes a decent adventure of the super cheap variety.


146. Justice of the Range (1935, David Selman) - 3/10
--- Very routine Tim McCoy western, but they get some mileage out of the usual cattle stealing feud thanks to his partnership with Ward Bond. Plus you did have pre-Gabby George Hayes being a western eccentric, a peg-legged eccentric this time.


147. The Outlaw Deputy (1935, Otto Brower) - 2/10
--- Yup, by the mid-30s the steam had ran out of the Tim McCoy franchise....


148. The Man from Guntown (1935, Ford Beebe) - 3/10
--- Can't say the undercover/mistaken identity plot was well executed, but with a likable set of characters this Tim McCoy western delivered a decent amount of enjoyment for a throw-away poverty row'er.


149. The Traitor (1936, Sam Newfield) - 2/10
--- Maybe it was better, but since it's Sam Newfield directing, there's no benefit of doubt. I felt the undercover plot was super clumsy and there was little Tim McCoy could do to save this from being a train wreck. I sort of loved the way he stopped that lynching with everyone putting their hands up with a panning shot. It was so cheesy!


150. Feud of the West (1936, Harry L. Fraser) - 3/10
--- I enjoy myself some Hoot Gibson. His pictures are bad, but some of the times it's of that 'so bad it's good' quality. He's a character, and with him here he's got Nelson McDowell, who was even more a character than him here! Plus Bob Kortman got to be head baddie, so there were things to enjoy here. Was the story well delivered? No, not even remotely!


151. Secret Patrol (1936, David Selman) - 3/10
--- Canadian Mountie film made only to meet the Commonwealth extension of the quota quickie. So you can expect there was little heart involved in making Secret Patrol (1936). While it showed promise for brief moments, it turned-out to be quite a bore.


152. Arizona Mahoney (1936, James P. Hogan) - 4/10
--- Paramount Pictures tries to do more with this one than the average B-western at the time, but they throw too much into the pot and it's mainly a mess. Sometimes a fun mess, but it's not exactly polished film making. Besides the usual western plot, they throw in comedian Joe Cook, of Rain or Shine (1930) fame, who looks way out of place here, and not surprisingly it ended his Hollywood career, as this was the final thing he did there. Even weirder was seeing Robert Cummings there trying to add the gullible touch to this family friendly blend. I know it was early in his career, but already this seemed beneath his talent. But at least there was some form of ambition for Arizona Mahoney (1936), even if it ends up feeling like a random mishmash.


153. Courage of the West (1937, Joseph H. Lewis) - 3/10
--- The film debut of Bob Baker. Takes the lead straight away as one of the forgotten singing cowboys they tried to launch during that short-lived craze. And Baker's career as a singing horseman was short-lived. He found initial success with this western shot in one-week, winning the fans over with his boyish charms and soothing voice. Not the worst candidate as cowboy hero, but there wasn't much else making him stand-out, so by the time the fad had ran its course, so had his career in Hollywood.


154. West of Rainbow's End (1938, Alan James) - 3/10
--- Super low production qualities, but Tim McCoy puts on an extra effort to compensate for the lack of ambition at Monogram Pictures associates. It's one of those westerns that doesn't stand a chance, but one can find enjoyment at them trying and failing to make things look good.


155. Code of the Rangers (1938, Sam Newfield) - 2/10
--- Sam Newfield has a special ability to make cool Tim McCoy a borefest.


156. Texas Wildcats (1939, Sam Newfield) - 2/10
--- This is the curse of sinking so low and being trapped by the smallest studios. They were just pumping out one film after the other without care or talent to do anything creative with them. Pure generic western production with a declining cowboy hero like Tim McCoy. Not very good.

Trapper Robert Taylor loves them and leaves them in Kentucky in 1798 (although we just see him leaving) until he meets Eleanor Parker, who won't let him leave in Many Rivers to Cross. Sort of a western screwball comedy with broad performances, exemplified by Victor McLaglen as her father.

Rancher Robert Taylor tries to control his aspiring gunfighter younger brother John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind. The screenplay is by Rod Serling, a serious but not preachy examination of western violence.

Stagecoach line owner Tim Holt infiltrates a gang that killed one of his drivers in Under the Tonto Rim, a typically entertaining B western.

While subtitles make it clearer what is being said (rewatched it on DVD rather than VHS), Altman's penchant to let his characters mumble and talk over one another has seldom been more off-putting than it is here. Also, while the snowbound scenes look divine, using natural lighting for all interior shots makes the majority of the action hard-to-see and harsh on the eyes (see above). Where the film takes off is in its snowy final half-hour, but it is a real bumpy ride.

Revisited after fifteen years, this still comes across refreshingly different western. Clint Eastwood's protagonist is incredibly interesting: a broke reformed killer determined not "to be like the way I was" while accepting a job for the money, and yet without a tight moral code; "deserve's got nothing to do with it". And from Clint's companion grappling with having killed, to a smug Gene Hackman, to all of the rain shots, this is a pretty magnificent achievement.

18. Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976)
This is a Western, but really it’s a movie about show business. We get the traditional set of backstage arguments, arrangements, and rehearsals that we’ve all seen in any number of shows about putting on a show. We even get a character who says, “There’s no business like show business,” which of course originates not in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show but in a 1946 musical (Annie Get Your Gun) that featured Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show.

This isn’t Robert Altman’s deconstruction of the West but rather his deconstruction of Western showmanship, through which he means to show us that the line between the real West and the faux West was barely a line at all. The movie begins with a title that reads: “Robert Altman’s Absolutely Unique and Heroic Enterprise of Inimitable Lustre!” We can tell from this that Altman equates movie Westerns with the original grand spectacle of Buffalo Bill’s show, and he regards this long tradition as one of humbug.

Beyond all that, it’s an Altman movie, which means jarring edits, an episodic structure, an ensemble cast, overlapping dialogue, a little comedy of manners. Unfortunately, it’s not funny or compelling. The whole thing is a bit of a drag.

--- George O'Brien getting to flirt with Laraine Day in between working for the secret Arizona Legion (1939) busting local crime rings. Good fun, and compared to the poverty row westerns I've just been watching, this was a delight. Not that this is a major western in the grand scheme of things either.

--- Tim McCoy carries himself as well as expected and isn't tripped-up too much by director Sam Newfield. Even if it's a cheap one, they do enough with the plot to get us by. Just go in with low expectations.

--- For a Sam Newfield directed Tim McCoy western this was decent, but that's only because I go in expect nothing. There is absolutely nothing original about it. They simply do just enough to get by.

--- Just stinks cheap. I wish so much more for Tim McCoy than these often abysmal PRC productions he had to do, but these were the gigs he got at that point in his career, a career that wasn't to recover from this.


161. Riders of Black Mountain (1940, Sam Newfield) - 3/10
--- These PRC/Sam Newfield productions are almost never much good, but Tim McCoy carried himself real well and Rex Lease was effective in his role as the confused law man caught between the undercover man and the real bandits. So for a cheap thrill it worked okay.


162. Covered Wagon Days (1940, George Sherman) - 3/10
--- There's three of them Mesquiteers, and there's been many different combinations in this long-running movie series, but can't say Robert Livingston, Raymond Hatton & Duncan Renaldo was the trio with the best chemistry. Came off as a bland group, and when their mission was as standard as it was here, this 29th entry in the Three Mesquiteers franchise wasn't too memorable.


163. Pals of the Silver Sage (1940, Albert Herman) - 4/10
--- I love myself some Tex Ritter and his singing. So unfortunate that he rarely got to work in polished production. Instead you got to accept these rough creations for Monogram Pictures. Pals of the Silver Sage (1940) does manage to entertain. Clearly aimed at a younger audience with Ritter singing some kids songs and more importantly featuring the 8-year-old Sugar Dawn in her screen debut, charming her way through this little movie in fine style, almost like a poverty row Shirley Temple. She only did 6 movies and then she was gone, but this is probable her best effort, much due to the chemistry between her and Tex.


164. West of Carson City (1940, Ray Taylor) - 4/10
--- Pulled-off a few good moments and the trio of Johnny Mack Brown, Bob Baker & Fuzzy Knight seemed to have decent chemistry while sort of mimicking what a Hopalong Cassidy flick would bring. Not the worst place to draw inspiration from.


165. West of Pinto Basin (1940, S. Roy Luby) - 3/10
--- More trigger trio action. This time with The Range Busters, their 3rd of 24 rush jobs done for Monogram between 1940-43. And with this being the 22nd Range Busters film I've seen, I can say that these films all feel like they blend together with their generic set-ups, and West of Pinto Basin (1940) is no exception. Standard as it gets for a poverty row effort.


166. Road Agent (1941, Charles Lamont) - 4/10
--- Definitely got its share of humor with the odd trigger trio of Dick Foran, Leo Carrillo & Andy Devine as Universal tries a upscaled B-western. Has songs and clowning around as its highlights, but when it delivers its western action Road Agent (1941) turns generic, unfortunately. At least a lot of it was silly fun, even if it gets fairly forgettable toward the end.


167. Sunset in Wyoming (1941, William Morgan) - 4/10
--- Good fun with Gene Autry & Smiley Burnette, but as usual the play and games take center stage and the plot feels secondary. And perhaps a little too much on the light side this time. But sure, there's entertainment here, and if you like the duo, you'll like Sunset in Wyoming (1941).

--- Badly executed plot with henchman Charles King having to be dumber than usual, but this Tim McCoy cheapy, does have the benefit of Art Davis being there to sing a few songs. Still didn't stop it from being a poor western.


169. Mojave Firebrand (1944, Spencer Gordon Bennet) - 4/10
--- "Wild" Bill Elliott and George 'Gabby' Hayes trying to clear up trouble in silver town. Routine as far as western action goes, but awesome as far as Gabby goes. He even danced! Yes, I'm easily entertained when it comes to Hayes...


170. Sonora Stagecoach (1944, Robert Emmett Tansey) - 3/10
--- The last official Trail Blazers western, though the partnership would continue a few more pictures, just not part of this series. Hoot Gibson & Bob Steele along with Chief Thundercloud ride along tackling bad men, as you would expect from nearly every western, and as with nearly all poverty row western, it's the same poor production values and lack of original vision which makes it blend in with hundreds of other movies like it. Sure, had some personalty, especially since being veterans at this game, but it's not like you can teach an old dog new tricks, and that's certainly the problem here.

--- Some fun shenanigans with Buster Crabbe & Al St. John, but their westerns were some of the cheapest looking of the mid-40s, so it's limited how serious you can take them. At least the pair seemed to have fun making them.

--- Part of The Texas Rangers movie series which had Tex Ritter & Dave O'Brien take most of the attention, with Guy Wilkerson also being there for one of the lesser trigger trios of that short lasting fad. Wasn't their worst, but their films was mainly there flooding the market without doing anything original... or good.


173. Flaming Bullets (1945, Harry L. Fraser) - 2/10
--- A fitting pointless finale to the pointless trigger trio of The Texas Rangers. That's coming from someone who's a fan of Tex Ritter. Can you believe they made 22 films from 1942-1945 in this series?!


174. Saddle Serenade (1945, Oliver Drake) - 3/10
--- Unadventurous B-western with Jimmy Wakely. Had a likable feel, but he wasn't exactly a massively charismatic guy and the production was a run-of-the-mill type cowboy affair, so it's not like it stood-out in the over-crowded space of cheap westerns.

--- Jimmy Wakely westerns are cozy westerns. Doesn't do too much, but it's not like they're hellish to get through. More for the tunes than having anything to offer western-style.


176. Home on the Range (1946, R.G. Springsteen) - 4/10
--- Wow, they experimented with Magnacolor for this Monte Hale wildlife western. Not the prettiest of colors, but it was something earthly about it, and therefore fit the mood of the film. Otherwise this has its share western tropes, but it's for the most part a cozy film.

--- This time Monte Hale gets a ordinary B-western. Nothing too exciting, but delivers at the standard of all the other low budget cowboys.

--- Fairy snappy entry in the Red Ryder film series starring Allan Lane, as Little Beaver gets kidnapped and the rest of the film is packed for your entertainment. Doesn't hurt that it's got a proven heavy like Barton MacLane on the job. A rare occasion I wish a Red Ryder film was longer.

--- After a few years in trigger trios. Bob Steele is back on his own for the smallest studio in town. He's given a little more personality than usual, but it's the tired old formula, so it's not like it brings anything new.

Viewed for a fourth time, this stands up better than ever. From night repairs conducted in silence, to labs where mechanics wear surgical gowns while fixing robots, there is always the sense of something sinister here even before the robots malfunction. And from the moment that Yul Brynner's gunslinger goes rogue, the film seldom lets up with sensational unsettling music choices. His unnaturally sparkling eyes and stiff body movements are very eerie too.

In the postbellum era, a Confederate veteran travels the land searching for a cure for his son's muteness. They run into trouble in a small town in Illinois and eventually settle in with a local woman on her farm. This is a really nice movie with a compelling story and a good lead performance by Alan Ladd. Also, a young Harry Dean Stanton (credited just as Dean Stanton) plays a villain! Unfortunately, it's got a strong dose of southern revanchism. Well, fuck the south.

3. Little Big Man (1970) - oh I hated this one. Everything falls so flat. The jokes aren’t funny, the drama is cheap and unearned, and Dustin Hoffman just seems lost the whole time. I couldn’t wait for the movie to end—too bad it was almost 2.5 hours long. This is my 20th dislike out of 2700 checks on iCM, it was that bad of an experience for me. Bleh

May I add that you're not completely alone with your stance. I didn't hate it back then, but the status as a classic and IMDb 7.7 entry escaped me, to put it nicely.

That's the last of the old movies I had lined-up, but I might do a few of the new Western TV-series, like 1883 and Billy the Kid, as they look kinda good. But the marathon portion of this challenge is over for my part.


182. California Firebrand (1948, Philip Ford) - 4/10
--- Trucolor for Monte Hale this time, for a decent family western. He looked good in color, and the splash of color helps the vibe of these adventures. Good mood stuff. What was not good moods was that veteran B-movie villain, and occasional leading man, LeRoy Mason suffered a heart attack during the production and would later on pass away as a result, so California Firebrand (1948) became his final film. Having seen 118 of his films, I can say he was a very recognizable actor effective in his roles, often in films that should have been beneath his talents, but he got stuck in low budget pictures and was effective there.


183. Northwest Outpost (1947, Allan Dwan) - 5/10
--- Sort of brings a Russian royalty drama to a western setting as it uses the Russian established Fort Ross in California as its backdrop to a Nelson Eddy musical. His regular screen partner Jeanette MacDonald had to drop out, but they found a worthy replacement in Ilona Massey. More for the scheming and high class singing than anything else. Can't touch the Eddy's major MGM pictures, but if you're in the mood to see Republic Pictures attempt something elegant, here's your chance.


184. Carson City Raiders (1948, Yakima Canutt) - 4/10
--- Competent job by Yakima Canutt directing this Allan "Rocky" Lane B-western. The action actually becomes fun, even if Carson City Raiders (1948) is hardly anything original in the genre. it just does the ordinary well.


185. The Rangers Ride (1948, Derwin Abrahams) - 3/10
--- It's a Jimmy Wakely western. He was never that interesting to begin with and Cannonball Taylor wasn't able to elevate this routine production one bit.

--- I prefer my Monte Hale westerns in color. Here in black & white they just look like any other low priority Republic Pictures western.


187. Ranger of Cherokee Strip (1949, Philip Ford) - 3/10
--- ....it's just another Republic Pictures B-western. You can change the cowboy and it wouldn't matter, it would still feel like the same movie they do over and over, but this one starred Monte Hale. LOL, I've been watching too many of these in a row now, to the point they just blend together. Someone jumping in just wanting to watch a random one-off western will probable enjoy this more than what I did this time around.


188. Pioneer Marshal (1949, Philip Ford) - 3/10
--- The pace felt slower for this Monte Hale western, and therefore the story was more at center. On the other hand, didn't feel like it had enough action to justify the slow pace, so it ends-up at the level of the other B&W Monty films. At least it felt a little bit different.


189. Red Stallion in the Rockies (1949, Ralph Murphy) - 2/10
--- They splashed on some Cinecolor, hoping that would save this cheap mess of a family movie, which's got Arthur Franz at the start of his career and Jean Heather at the end of hers, but it doesn't really connect for me. It's more horses than cowboys, so that was expected.

At the start, I thought director Ray Milland was trying to hit every western cliche in the first ten minutes, but it got better as it went along, helped by strong supporting performances by Ward Bond, Mary Murphy and Raymond Burr. I could have done without the unconvincing, obligatory romance (in old westerns, when a couple kiss, the preceding conflict vanishes, although they barely talked to each other before), with Milland twice Murphy's age. The plot was basically the same as every B western that I have watched this month, but it went down easier with better acting and production values.

49 - Wagon Master (1950) - 8/10 - Two horse traders decide to help escort a group of Mormons across the desert to their new home. Along the way, they encounter a gang of criminals, natives, and others. This is a pretty laid back John Ford film that was entertaining.

50 - El Dorado (1966) - 8/10 - An aging gunfighter (John Wayne) helps his old friend (Robert Mitchum) who is a sheriff trying to keep a greedy rancher from stealing the water rights from another rancher. There is plenty of action and a fair amount of humor as well. A young James Caan plays Mississippi, a 'stray' picked up by Wayne along the way.

51 - Comanche Station (1960) - 8/10 - Randolph Scott rescues a woman who is being held by the Comanches and sets out to get her home to her husband, but there are a few obstacles in his way. It's pretty straightforward and I enjoyed it.

52 - 7 Men from Now (1956) - 7/10 - Randolph Scott is a sheriff out to get the seven men responsible for his wife's death. This wasn't bad, but it didn't seem quite on par with the other Boetticher/Scott collaborations that I've seen.

This is an uneven ride with several lulls in between the highlights, but the highlights are really, really great. Most memorable is some water wastage (see above) and the central duo posing as soldiers on a train, leading to a dialogue exchange in which they point a gun in an officer's face and say "here" in response to where rebels have been spotted. There is also a great shootout with one of them in clown makeup, topped off with a bleeding white carnation.

10. Calamity Jane (1953) - This was silly and pretty fun. Doris Day does a really root-tootin’ accent as Calamity Jane that had the group I was watching with quoting along a lot. A couple of good songs also added some to the film. Additionally, some nice LGBTQ themes/subtext for those who go looking for it. It did seem to lose steam a bit by the halfway point, apparently running out of plot but still needing to fill out the runtime. But still overall a good time. 6/10.

54 - The Lucky Texan (1934) - 5/10 - John Wayne is a Texan who moves in with an old rancher that he knew as a kid. The two strike it rich when they find gold. The bad guys in town plot to steal his mine and his ranch.

55 - The Man from Utah (1934) - 4.5/10 - John Wayne is a talented rider who plans to enter a new rodeo and earn prize money. The town has most of its wealth invested in the success of the competition, but a crooked rodeo gang aims to profit themselves.

56 - The Star Packer (1934) - 4/10 - John Wayne accepts the job of sheriff after the previous sheriff is murdered. He has an Apache friend as a sidekick and seeks to track down the mysterious 'Shadow' and his gang who are causing many problems in town.

The bounty hunter has to avoid the man's brother and friends who aim to save the man. This is another nice Boetticher film.

59 - The Far Country (1954) - 7/10 - James Stewart stars as a man who drives a herd of cows from Wyoming to Seattle and then takes them up into Alaska. He runs afoul of a crooked judge in Skagway before crossing over into Canada and getting involved in the gold rush. He tries to steer clear of other people's troubles, but eventually gets drawn in. It's decent and has nice scenery.

21. Stagecoach (1939)
It’s been about 25 years since I last saw this movie, so I figured it was time for a rewatch. It’s simple really. Just pack a half-dozen fully realized subplots into a lean script about a stagecoach trip, along with ten genuinely interesting characters. Add actors who can make an impression even with limited lines. Plus John Ford’s penchant for extraordinary photography, both for interior scenes and landscape shots. Make sure the editing is super tight for the action scenes and the stunts are out of this world. Add a social critique that doesn’t feel pasted on. Also, a pretty good score. Do all this in 95 minutes. Actually, that’s not so simple at all. It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s an extraordinary one.

22. The Scalphunters (1968)
Burt Lancaster is a fur trapper. Telly Savalas is the leader of a group of bandits who acquire furs stolen from Lancaster. Shelley Winters is Savalas’ horoscope-reading girlfriend. And Ossie Davis is a runaway slave caught in the middle as Lancaster trails the bandits across the West. It all adds up to a shambolic adventure with plenty of comedy thrown in. The actors bring plenty of charisma to the proceedings, but the one uneasy note is Davis’ character, a bit of an Uncle Tom figure even though we are led to understand he escaped from slavery into the West. The racism of Lancaster’s character leads to plenty of odd couple comedy, but the whole bit feels a bit misguided. Incidentally, I'd never heard of screenwriter William Norton before, but he had quite a life.

60 - The Man from Laramie (1955) - 7/10 - James Stewart is a man who brings a wagonload of supplies to the town of Coronado, but he is really searching for the person responsible for selling rifles to the Apache, who killed his younger brother. He runs afoul of the vicious son of the local rancher who owns most of the land in the area. This is a decent western, but far from my favorite among the Anthony Mann/James Stewart collaborations.

61 - Ride the High Country (1962) - 7/10 - Joel McCrea has been hired to transport gold from a mining settlement. He encounters an old friend (Randolph Scott) who is going to help him guard the gold along with another young hand. They also have to deal with a young woman who leaves her father's home to marry one of the miners only to find it isn't what she was expecting. It's kind of a slow burn at times that never fully ignites, but isn't bad.

With noticeable grey hairs and much tiredness, Lee Van Cleef still manages to be as cool as ever while also playing a man clearly getting on years here. The film also benefits from a very atmospheric non-Morricone score and some interesting black and white flashbacks. Everything though hinges on discovering who actually killed a murdered man, and if revealed early on (rather than left for a twist near the end), this could have easily been very character-driven.
