A thriller that really delivers. There is some poor CGI late in the piece as the city eventually falls apart, but for the most part the action is exciting and well filmed. An armoured car robbery in broad daylight is absolutely breathtaking with all of the coordination involved, while there is a great fight involving falling from a sheet between two roofs to several storeys below. The film's best asset though is arguably a perfectly pensive Andy Lau in the lead role.

Nice. Never understood why they film wasn't liked, might be because the influence of China on HK cinema was really starting to become visible around that time. So much in fact that I have this film listed as China instead of Hong Kong.

It's a HK/China co-production. Based on (literally) one minute of research, there seemed to be more HK funding/influence on the film, but if gunnar thinks otherwise, I'm happy to change the listing to China. I didn't investigate the case all that deeply.

This Hui Brothers comedy does not really have much plot to speak of, but there are plenty of amusing moments to be had. There is a particularly funny part in which the trio use hidden cameras to catch a famous woman off-guard. Then there is an insane part in which Michael Hui gets plastic surgery to look like various celebrity mash-ups (see above). The funniest parts though are wisely saved for the climax which has the trio madly hopping around during karaoke.

IMDb isn't perfect of course, but since they have Hong Kong listed first, that's generally what I would go with.

Oh sure, me neither! There's so much crossover these days that it's becoming less and less interesting to split both countries to be honest.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

A fast-paced action thriller. While the premise is a little confusing, the film mounts a decent amount of tension. The biggest weakness of the project is its strict adherence to a predictable 'everything that can go wrong does go wrong' formula - something that leads to the film often feeling ludicrous; his troubled attempts to buy a phone charger feel especially ridiculous and inappropriately comical. The whole thing is certainly engaging, but little more.

12 days in and we are up to 25 participants.

14 - The Legend of the Drunken Master (1994, Hong Kong) - 7.5/10 - Wong Fei-Hung accidentally gets caught up in a plot to smuggle Chinese artifacts out of the country. It's a good film and there are plenty of good fights, but it isn't as much fun as the original Drunken Master film.

15 - Rumble in the Bronx (1995, Hong Kong) - 7/10 - Keung (Jackie Chan) travels to New York City for his uncle's wedding and sticks around for a while to help out while his uncle is on his honeymoon. He runs afoul of a local gang of street toughs and also gets involved with a violent group looking for stolen diamonds. The story is a bit lame, but the stunts are great and I did enjoy the movie, though probably not as much as when I first saw it in the 1990s.

Spoiler
1 - Twin Dragons (1992, Hong Kong) - 7/10
2 - Armour of God (1986, Hong Kong) - 7/10
3 - Operation Condor (1991, Hong Kong) - 7.5/10
4 - Project A (1983, Hong Kong) - 7/10
5 - Project A: Part II (1987, Hong Kong) - 7/10
6 - Dragon Lord (1982, Hong Kong) - 6.5/10
7 - Ip Man (2008, Hong Kong) - 8/10
8 - Ip Man 2 (2010, Hong Kong) - 7/10
9 - Ip Man 3 (2015, Hong Kong) - 6/10
10 - Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019, Hong Kong) - 7.5/10
11 - Chinese Zodiac (2012, Hong Kong) - 7/10
12 - Drunken Master (1978, Hong Kong) - 8/10
13 - Days of Being Wild (1990, Hong Kong) - 6/10

With vibrant hues and detailed sets, this looks pretty great for colour film of its vintage; as a narrative though, it is problematic as the story involves its heroine discovering that she actually wants love more than an air stewardess career, prepared to settle for a verbally abusive partner. It is little surprise that the first half of the film works better with less romance - and intriguingly insane training with the women retaught how to smile and walk (see above).

Watched for a second time, this still often feels like a mere excuse for over-the-top stunts, especially with an indulgent double instant replay of Chan's light decorations descent near the end. If a bit excessive though, the stunts are breathtaking, and there are some very funny moments too. Most notable is a clumsy assassin using his hand cover to cover his face when his ski mask is ripped off, and an agile Chan answering numerous phones at once (see above).

10. 3.5* - Shanghai Triad [Yao a Yao Yao Dao Waipo Qiao] by Yimou Zhang (1995/China)

Yimou Zhang's rather subdued crime drama. I really liked this film when I first watched it, I think I've seen this done better since. It's certainly not a bad one, with proper intrigue and sporting a very nice setting, but somehow it lacks Zhang's visual flourish, which left me a little disappointed. Shuisheng is a young boy who is brought to Shanghai by his uncle. He works for Tang, an important gang boss. Shuisheng is given to Tang's mistress, who he needs to tend to. From the shadows, Shuisheng observes the lives of the wealthy, but he'll soon find out that this lifestyle comes with its own perils. Gong Li is strong, as is the rest of the cast. I liked the inclusion of more prominent genre elements, and the mix of drama and crime works very well. I just remembered a more visually elaborate film. Maybe it was the restoration work that took away from the colors, but I was a little underwhelmed. A very good film, just not a personal favorite anymore.

The title is quite blunt with exclamation mark and all, and there is really little else to this film plot-wise other than the protagonist planning and executing a series of revenge attacks. There is a surprising amount of blood and gore though for a film of its vintage, and while the effects are a little overdone, a blinding scene is pretty brutal. The movie also has the novelty of constantly cutting back and forth between stage performances and the various fights.

The plot is hardly amazing here with a forgettable MacGuffin and a jealous girlfriend who feels like a lame leftover from Police Story, but as an action film and as a comedy this delivers through and through. From trapping baddies in wheelie bins to kicking crates into the faces of his assailants, Chan displays some incredible moves. Many of his fights are also amusingly humorous - most notably handing his empty weapon to a baddie as a clever distraction.

Billed as a comedy about a Chinese man transporting the corpse of his friend cross-country, this is not the Weekend at Bernie's knockoff one might expect. After an opening bus ride (in which he pretends his friend is drunk), few other attempts are made to pretend he is alive, with the movie powered by how others react to the situation - some spooked by it, others willing to help and others still only interested in fleecing him. Very solid lead performance too.

6. Return of the One-Armed Swordsman (1969, Hong Kong) * 106 min.

Swordsman Fang tries to keep his word to his wife to stick to farming, but extreme circumstances pull him back into the martial world. Not quite as good as The One-Armed Swordsman, it would have benefited from more development of the Eight Demons, with only beautiful Chia Essie Lin getting a chance to be more colorful than a generic baddie with an unusual weapon. It does offer more large scale battles and bloodier killing.

Recruited as mere poster boys for the police force based on their looks, two rookie cops try to prove their actual worth as officers here. It is an idea with potential, exploring the need of the authorities to look good, and there is a delightfully zany scene in which the duo save a kindergarten class from a parent helper who has lost his mind (see above). The majority of the movie though is rather spent on them simply befriending some high school students.

We're almost to the halfway point and now have the years 1965-2022 covered plus 9 earlier years for a total of films from 67 different years (out of 278 films total). The top 5 remains unchanged with sol and Traveller battling it out for second place, DudeLanez solidly in fourth and myself rounding out the top 5. sol is continuing to be very efficient with films from 39 different years (out of 42 films watched).

16 - The Young Master (1980, Hong Kong) - 7/10 - Jackie Chan stars as an orphan who was taken in by a kung fu master and trains in his school. When his fellow orphan brings disgrace on the school and is kicked out, He takes off in search of his brother and is mistaken for a wanted criminal. The film starts out pretty slowly, but there is plenty of action after that. It's a decent film, but not one of Chan's best.

17 - The Killer (1989, Hong Kong) - 7.5/10 - An assassin takes an interest in a nightclub singer after she is accidentally blinded during one of his jobs. He decides to take on one last big job to help pay for a cornea transplant, but is double crossed and now has assassins after him as well. He finds an unlikely ally in a police officer investigating his latest job. The bullets sure were flying through a good portion of the movie. It's kind of ridiculous, but is still plenty of fun.

18 - Still Life (2006, China) - 6.5/10 - A man arrives in the town of Fengjie to search for the wife and daughter that he hasn't seen in 16 years. Fengjie is being slowly submerged due to the new Three Gorges dam. A woman also arrives in Fengjie looking for the husband who left two years earlier. Their stories are only tangentially related. The movie is very slow, but looks great. I only found the story itself mildly interesting with the woman's story the more interesting of the two.

Spoiler
1 - Twin Dragons (1992, Hong Kong) - 7/10
2 - Armour of God (1986, Hong Kong) - 7/10
3 - Operation Condor (1991, Hong Kong) - 7.5/10
4 - Project A (1983, Hong Kong) - 7/10
5 - Project A: Part II (1987, Hong Kong) - 7/10
6 - Dragon Lord (1982, Hong Kong) - 6.5/10
7 - Ip Man (2008, Hong Kong) - 8/10
8 - Ip Man 2 (2010, Hong Kong) - 7/10
9 - Ip Man 3 (2015, Hong Kong) - 6/10
10 - Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019, Hong Kong) - 7.5/10
11 - Chinese Zodiac (2012, Hong Kong) - 7/10
12 - Drunken Master (1978, Hong Kong) - 8/10
13 - Days of Being Wild (1990, Hong Kong) - 6/10
14 - The Legend of the Drunken Master (1994, Hong Kong) - 7.5/10
15 - Rumble in the Bronx (1995, Hong Kong) - 7/10

Thanks for noticing.

I don't know how long I'll be able to maintain it for, but yes, as long as the Bonus Challenge remains winnable, that's what I will be pursuing this month. :turned:

The plot is more than a little bizarre here with an international hitman game of sorts, related to avenging a businessman's murder. This is, however, a film far better enjoyed for the chemistry between the leads and scattered action rather than as a narrative. Jet Li is hardly the most charismatic action star out there, but Eric Tsang is a lot of fun as his companion. There is also a great elongated fight that has Li using a belt as a whip and much smashed glass.

Cheng Pei-Pei's every fight scene here is spectacular, even if the impact is often lessened by the filmmakers shooting in her battles in (mostly) long shot. For a film named after her character though, her screen time is very limited. Far more screen time is taken by a man going undercover in her quarters and fights between the male characters. Some of the undercover stuff is interesting, particularly his hiding of a dummy, but the focus on him just feels off.

I thought you were going for a color theme for a moment and expected the third film to be Red Sorghum. :)

Now that you mention it... I actually have Red Dust (1990) still lined up for this challenge. Should have gone for that, then. :D
