01. 3.0* - Cléo from 5 to 7
02. 1.0* - Faces Places
03. 0.5* - The Gleaners and I

Just happened to watch my third Varda yesterday, so I'll extend the list. She's an interesting lady and I kinda like her persona, but I can't stand her documentaries so far. This type of human interest is why I abandoned TV and ran to cinema. It was a bit like Etre et Avoir for me, complete anti-cinema in my book.

The only 3 I've seen of Varda I streamed back in February for the France poll, so they're all still fresh in the mind. Would like to see more at some point.

Herman Yau (70 seen, 2.63* average)

Probably not too suited for this forum, but Herman Yau is a Hong Kong essential with a rich career, taking up various roles in the Hong Kong industry. From infamous cult, to socially engaged films, mainstream comedies, popular genre work and big blockbusters, he's done them all. Often with minor budgets, but that never really stopped him. Hard to recommend freely, but if you're looking to get more acquainted with Hong Kong, there's really no way around him.

Looks like a combination of Johnny To and Wong Jing, both good and bad. I could be happy spending a month watching his films.

1. The Untold Story
2. Ebola Syndrome

Good timing with the China/Hong Kong/Taiwan challenge just started. Haven't seen any of Yau's work so far, but you never know what might happen this month.

Only seen The New King of Comedy, but I thought that was a Stephen Chow film. Didn't realize it had two directors (I don't think there were two listed on imdb before).

Nada. Looks like I have The Untold Story - the only film that's an official check - and I think my library has most of the Ip Man films, possibly including the ones he did. Nothing more than a name to me at this point; perhaps I will get to one or two this month if I watch anything for the challenge but I wouldn't count on it.
In those days they had time for everything.

I second 1SO's list which consists of every Herman Yau film I've checked so far, except IN REVERSE ORDER.
Ebola Syndrome might be the grossest and most intentionally perverse film I've ever seen and I really feel bad about how much I enjoyed that. You are a sick freak, Herman.

I've only seen Qing Yan (2012) Nightmare, wich I rated a terrible 1.5/5...

I've done some CatIII movie catch up during the weird challenge and will continue with that during the Chinese challenge now, so at least the Untold Story should be seen shortly I guess

I guess most people know him for his Cat III/cult work, but his oeuvre is way more varied. For a large part of his career he worked on the outskirts of the Hong Kong movie industry, tackling subjects and genres that others wouldn't. Part of that was juicy horror, but he would just as well direct a crime/drama about Mainland prostitutes coming to Hong Kong.

I've seen none by Herman Yau

And my a little late to game contribution for Varda :
I liked plenty to various degrees. But haven't seen one that I truly love enough to consider an all time fav. On the other side I haven't seen any that I consider poor or less. Even in the movies that don't completely work for me, there is always something to like.

It's struck me as kind of bizarre for a while that one of the most notorious directors of the CATIII era went on to be one of China's biggest blockbuster filmmakers. I guess the only other comparisons I can think of like this immediately is Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi maybe. I'm sure there are others like that though. I actually have some of his newer movies on the docket to watch this month for the China challenge.

I think it's pretty much in line with the rest of his career though. He never quite fit the mould ... so when all the big HK directors moved to China, chasing $$$, Yau remained in Hong Kong and filled a void left behind by the others. It's only very recently that he has begun to direct expensive blockbusters with international appeal though, most of the 00s and 10s was dedicated to various levels of genre work (some with tremendous local appeal, like "All's Well, End Well", but I don't think that's the kind of blockbuster you are referring to).

let's do another one linked to the current Chinese challenge: Tsui Hark

1. Swordsman (1990) 4 - - Siu ngo gong woo
2. Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings (2018) 4 - 8,5 - Di Renjie zhi Sidatianwang
3. Once Upon a Time in China II (1992) 4 - 8 - Wong Fei Hung II: Naam yi dong ji keung
4. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) 4 - - Di renjie: Tong tian di guo
8. Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983) 3,5 - - Xin shu shan jian ke
14. Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013) 3 - 6 - Di Renjie: Shen du long wang
15. The Butterfly Murders (1979) 3 - - Die bian
16. Seven Swords (2005) 3 - 6,5 - Qi jian
17. The Blade (1995) 2 - - Dao

I am giving again my ratings out of 5 stars and my ratings out of 10 if I have those (that is, if I saw the movie post 2011, when I started using the other rating additionally). That last one, Dao, is one of the first Hark movies I saw (after Zu) and I only remember being very dissapointed that the editting of it al was so chaotic that the fights could not really be followed. I think I might rate it completely different now, but as I am still not a fan of over-editted action cinema, I haven't dared to revisit that one yet. The first one is a colaborative effort that might not fully count as a Hark movie, but it is one of my very favorite wuxia films of all-time, so... (might even give it a higher score whenever I will rewatch it).

Hark is for me maybe THE name in Hong Kong cinema, coming up in the new wave and graduating to above average blockbuster fare in more recent years as a director, and being a very influential producer besides that. Not that he is an overall favorite, or the best example of a certain genre, but I always like what he does and he has qualities in both entertainment and the more artistic side of the coin!

I thought I'd seen some but it seems I haven't seen any of his films. A lot of them on my watchlist, though, and the Detective Dee films look lie fun, so I'm sure I'll get around to him eventually. Maybe this month.

Well, I've seen a couple more than none :P It's not a director who immediately jumps out as a personal favorite, but with 8 films in my personal toplist, he certainly deserves a place there. I left New Dragon Gate Inn (Sun Lung Moon Hak Chan, 1992) from my list because Hark was just an uncredited co-director there, but I rate that movie a solid 8.5, so it is up there with the Swordsman, a huge wuxia favorite!

The only Tsui Hark film I've seen is Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings, which I'd put on the stronger end of my "Good" category. Planning to see Time and Tide at some point this month.

I do tend to like Tsui Hark. He's a great, slick action director with a flair for fantasy. While very few of his films I'd put as absolute favorites, he almost always delivers something entertaining. I do wish he was less reliant on mediocre CGI in his newer films though...

Decided to watch Once Upon a Time in China tonight. Didn't enjoy it as much as I thought it would. The only standout was some of the fight scenes; they were truly spectacular. The vast majority of the film fell flat for me, unfortunately. Also, I found it weird that it seemed the entire film was redubbed in what I think is Cantonese (which is what I thought the film was shot in), and I found that distracting.

So his films are now lower priority for me, though I may give one of his dramas a go.
