It seems we don't have a general thread for that, so I will just start one. Less talk, more action.

There's been a huge update and I never like those, anywhere. :turned:
I mainly visit RYM to keep track of new releases for my ratings catalogue. Where the heck have they gone.

Okay, I somehow made it through my first shock.
To my great surprise, new releases are from now on not your profile page, but in a section ominously called "New Music". Ah.
And you can play around with it and, for example, remove those artists who don't actually interest you that much, who pump out too many singles, only pop up for numerous live releases/archival stuff or who just in general spam out way too many fucking releases.
That's neat.

I actually begged for a way to look for popular releases or to sort charts by number of ratings for so many years.
Might this be one of the rare site overhauls that improves things ..? (Looking at you, IMDb)

RYM is very good, for one thing you can browse the site without your computer burning up after a few minutes (looking at you Letterboxd)

Funny that you mention it, for the first time I'm having performance issues with the site. Maybe all users are checking out all the new features at once.

Would you explain why you opted for RYM and not Discogs?
For me, the latter looks more like a collection tool and marketplace. It's tenfold uglier, messier with comments and reviews, ugh, everything is worse (except some data situations). Can't believe and don't really understand how some music fans don't go for Sonemic.

Damn :) I was astonished myself and am, as always, in awe of your forum wisdom!
("Rate Your Music" only resulted in specific threads, RYM is too short to search for.)

If it's possible to merge the threads, I invite the mods to do so.

I mean, there was no post in the other thread for 8 years and with my post here, this one has the same amount of posts

I haven't played around with the new website version that much but I'm really excited and really like what I see so far. We've been eagerly awaiting Sonemic for half a decade now.
On the other hand, it broke some of my custom scripts :D

Yea my scripts broke but I like the new updates. It’s fun to play around with the chart settings and the new front page looks great.

I'm pretty sure that will only be done after Sonemic is online

No. But all the ads on that site make it unusable. I don't know what they are thinking with all the huge pop-up video ads. (Obviously they want people to become paying members)

Just saw that RYM is asking their community for some cash / donations / fundraiser: Link

I found the following data interesting: "Today, 6.7% of active RYM users are subscribers. We would like to increase that to 15% during this fundraiser if possible, and 20% in the long-term."
6.7% already sounds like a lot to me! Then, we don't know who "active users" are. Could be "logging in once a month", could be "entering stuff into the database on a weekly basis". I'm sometimes the former, sometimes the latter .. but it's really a great site. I even considered subscribing once without any purpose for the extra features, only for the cause. And then .. I didn't.

Discuss.

I subscribe because I use the site a lot and some of the extra features are nice. I don't participate in the community so I have no idea how active the site is.

They did a Kickstarter back in 2015 and promised it would all be done by 2016. All we got so far were minor changes. Now they're asking for another fundraiser. Hard to trust them tbh

Bad planning it seems. They gave us free subscriber status and I ended up paying less for the fundraiser than I would have paid for the subscription over the years. I wouldn't say we just got "minor changes" though, especially with the Sonemic charts being live now. I'm still missing the individual song pages and charts but apart from that it's mostly visual changes afair?

Haven't been on the site much lately but noticed they did some updates last month. The new recommendation/challenge system is pretty fun. Although it seems clear that the quote in my sig rings true. My recs are fairly random but my music 'challenges' are all black metal, death metal, avant-garde jazz and my film challenges are experimental and structural lol. My top affinity for music is merseybeat, no surprise, but my top genre affinity for film is time travel which I wasn't expecting. Also like I can finally put the all-time charts as default again because I don't care about the latest year charts. Looking forward to the Cinemos and Glitchwave coming out of beta at some point.
