150 - The Tomorrow War (2021) - 7/10 - Aliens show up in the late 2040s and by 2051, humanity is almost wiped out. They send soldiers back to 2022 to recruit people from the past to try and protect the future. Chris Pratt stars as a former soldier turned science teacher who gets drafted and sent to the future. It was pretty entertaining.

151 - Rentaghost Series 1 (1976) (123 minutes with 43 to carry forward) - Fred Mumford has only been deceased for about six months and he decides to start a ghost rental agency. The only two ghosts who respond to his ad are a Victorian gentleman and a court jester. The show was decent, though not quite as good as I hoped so I may or may not continue with the other eight series.

152-154 - The Tick (2001) (201 minutes plus 39 minutes carried over from before, 22 remaining) - I enjoyed this version of The Tick just as much, if not more, than the more recent version on Amazon Prime. I need to check out the animated series version some day.

155-158 - Cybergirl (2001) Episodes 101-113 (320 minutes) - A human prototype 6000 escapes from where she's being kept and travels to Earth. She looks like a teenage girl, except for the blue hair and lips plus various superhuman abilities. She is pursued by two earlier prototypes (who wear red). She makes a few friends on Earth and helps others while evading her pursuers. The villains are a bit cartoonish at times and it isn't up to the level of Ocean Girl, but I still think the series is fun.

Count = 158 Bonus = Complete

24. Âya to majo [Earwig and the Witch] (2020, Goro Miyazaki) #Animation: 1.5 - It has absolutely ugly looking CGI animation, this could be forgivable if it somehow had a engaging plot and characters to care about.. alas it far from does. This is a horrible written movie with a half baked disjointed plot that glosses over developments and with underdeveloped characters whose connections are implied instead of shown, on top of that it's also horrendous to look at. I am extra harsh because this comes from Ghibli. Also with son Goro at the helm, whose previous film I did like, there is enough knowhow to write a better movie, and the studio has enough money to afford better looking CGI even if it was made for TV (even most cheap toddler tv-series look better). It's best to never speak of this abomination again.

25. I guerrieri dell'anno 2072 [Rome, 2072 A.D./New Gladiators/Fighting Centurions] (1984, Lucio Fulci) #Europe: 3.5 - In the future a tv network stages a modern version of the gladiator fights to increase their ratings. This sounds fun and cool. But alas the movie spends very little time on these fights actually, instead on dealing behind the scenes. It's just all very boring and bad, despite Fulci delivering some nice directorial touches.

A post-apocalyptic world where the rich of the planet left Earth, become infertile on another planet and returned as an expedition to Earth. This ended up being a bit of a slog to march through, half because of the "classicism is bad" thick messaging and half because the movie is just ugly and unpleasant to watch. Earth is damp, dark, muted, and apparently confined to mostly to indoor featureless locations.

I loved the first act of this movie, it's shocking and entertaining and full of crazy murder, but then in the second act it takes a sudden left turn and seems to start trying to develop sympathy for characters I find completely unsympathetic. I do its bizarre transposition of social issues to crazy body horror, but there's small irritations that prevent me from liking it more.

29. Muppets Haunted Mansion (Thatcher, 2021) 167 checks, 0 official lists
Mediocre muppets movie. It has the typical corny jokes and dance routines but nothing stands out. It's one of those films that I watch and think "oh, it's not too bad", but afterwards I can't really specify anything about it I particularly liked, and like too many franchises nowadays, it's more a chance to cross-promote Disney IP than an artistic endeavour.
4/10

30. Bacurau (Dornelles-Filho, 2019) 1084 checks, 3 official lists #SouthAmerica
Very nicely shot and acted, but suffers from a slow pace and having a big mystery about what's going on even though the answer is just The Most Dangerous Game for about the thousandth time, except now it's hitched to an anti-colonialist message. I might enjoy it more on a rewatch, but for all the hype it had been getting it was a bit of disappointment. I think the sci-fi tag is a stretch, but I guess there's an argument that it's abstracting world issues.

31. Dune (Lynch, 1984) 12052 checks, 4 official lists Rewatch #Hugo
My second time watching this, and having seen the new Villeneuve version, rewatching this makes me appreciate both versions more. Definitely the short running time is a problem here, because previously I didn't know what was going on, despite the fact that characters constantly explain via dialogue or voiceover. I love the surrealist sensibility that Lynch brings to this, and it's a remarkable piece of sci-fi world-building.

This thread has added far too many films to my watchlist - as you keep finding stuff that I haven't heard of + interests me.

07. The Astro-Zombies (1968) #DeadSpace - Rating: 2/10
This is some nonsensical plot about “mad” doctor John Carradine trying to preserve the great minds of Earth in a memory bank (but his goals change every 5mins), but in the process he creates some “quasi men” who just wander around outside and kill people for no reason – oh and they’re solar powered too. Somebody decided this needed to be half about spies / bad foreign agents shooting at each other, and half just watching Carradine and his hunchback assistant, Franchot (who steals the show) do menial tasks, like unscrewing lids in painfully slow detail. Interestingly, Carradine also makes (among his other inventions) a “thought transfer device” – in order to put thoughts directly into people’s heads. This is exactly a typical schizo experience – that someone has inserted thoughts into your brain, as they are not your own. In my experience of this, I came to believe God was telling me things – that I must or must not do, which is a weird experience (to say the least). So, its great to see this in a film, even if its overshadowed by the “quasi men zombies” and not really mentioned ever again. Of course the zombies murder everyone in sight because their brains are from “psychopathic killers”. You’d think Carradine would give enough of a shit to put a stop to them, but he just responds with a “the next one is a moral brain”, oh ok, great. Oh, but Franchot is the real star here, with his silly faces and doing his own experiments in his free time (on bikini girls apparently) – I want to know more about Franchot and his gay relationship with Carradine. Anyway, this is a painfully slow watch with 70% of the runtime being laboratory technobabble, and then the zombies just sorta appear a couple times - as more people get shot than killed by the zombies.

132. Heavenly Desire (Jourdan Alexander, 1979)
133. Mary! Mary! (Bernard Morris, 1977)
It's a Sexy Deal with the Devil Double Feature!! Heavenly Desire is about a couple of brothel whores in the wild west who die and strike a deal with the devil to help him seduce people to the dark side. Kooky premise and the actors look like they're having fun. Not too bad actually. Mary! Mary! is probably a better made movie in some ways but the tone is really strange. It's about a guy who sells his soul to the devil to fix his premature ejaculation problem and for the most part the whole thing is played for laughs. But then there's an out of left field weird ass ending...

Image
134. Hereafter (Clint Eastwood, 2010)
This one is about three different people who all have near death experiences that give them insight into the afterlife and how they each cope with it. Frankly I thought it was overly long and meandering with a muddled narrative. It has some interesting ideas but doesn't really pursue them half the time.

Image
135. The Scorpion King (Chuck Russell, 2002)
This basically felt like The Rock getting out his Conan jollies. Honestly not terrible for what it is.

Image
136. Freaky Friday (Mark Waters, 2003)
Jamie Lee Curtis looks like she's having fun here in what's otherwise a pretty bland, predictable Disney remake.

Image
137. Project A-Ko Versus Battle 1: Grey Side (Katsuhiko Nishijima, 1990)
138. Project A-Ko Versus Battle 2: Blue Side (Katsuhiko Nishijima, 1990)
Sometimes I just feel like waxing nostalgic and rewatching stuff. Here are a couple of Project A-ko OVAs I had on VHS back in the day. They aren't great but were fine to scratch that nostalgia itch.

Image
139. The Matrix Resurrections (Lana Wachowski, 2021)
Speaking of nostalgia, I gotta say this felt pretty weak to me. Uninspired re-quel ideas and a very unfocused gibberishy screenplay coupled with the fact that the directing here seemed actively worse than the previous films. It's not all bad. There were a couple of pretty good action sequences, but really...meh.

Image
140-142. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power S4E2-13 (2019) #LookAUnicorn
My daughter's a big fan of this one, and frankly it's surprisingly well made with some pretty complex character dynamics and a real sense of fun with very good animation. This is like 100 times better than the random garbage she watches on youtube.

Image
143. Rak ti Khon Kaen a.k.a. Cemetery of Splendor (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2015)
I can't say I'm the biggest fan of Weerasethakul's magic realist slow cinema films and this one does nothing to change my mind.

Image
144. Topper Returns (Roy Del Ruth, 1941)
Man, Topper just can't seem to shake being tormented by mischievous ghosts, huh? This was ok but pretty predictable. Plus it had ol' "Rochester" in it so expect some hokey ol' fashioned bug-eyed racist caricatures.

22. The Tomorrow War (2021)
The most expensive movie ever made that went to streaming without a theatrical release, this time travel/alien invasion action thriller is big and kind of dumb and kind of fun. Chris Pratt jumping off a speeding snowmobile in order to bury an axe in an alien's head -- that kind of dumb and fun. There's also an obvious climate change metaphor here, along with a shockingly-muscled-for-his-age JK Simmons. For my part, I enjoyed it.

Flavo thinks I deserve my brain to be toast after this ;), but I did myself an Emmerich eimmersion.

27. Independence Day (1996, Roland Emmerich) rewatch: ? > 5.0 - I remembered this to be a very enjoyable summer blockbuster. But apparently I only remembered the fun parts; Will Smith punching an alien, blowing up the White House, Smith and Goldblum delivering the virus inside the mothership. And I forgot about all the absolute mediocre dullness surrounding it.

28. Independence Day: Resurgence (2016, Roland Emmerich): 5.0 - Contrary to many I liked this sequel at least as much. It has a weird necessity to have to re-use every character of the first one (really why is Goldblum dad also in this?) except Will Smith who apparently wanted too much money to show up again, plus a whole bunch of new one. With so many characters of course all are underdeveloped. And the plot seems to lose what's actually happening precisely when in the other plot threads. But it is more impressive in the entertainment department where it goes way more over the top than the first one, I mean a space ship that covers the whole North Atlantic Ocean :teehee: Apart from some spectacular moments, it is a very mediocre overstuffed movie tho.

29. The Day After Tomorrow (2004, Roland Emmerich): 5.5 - It passes the time. I don't really mind the stupidities and illogicalities. Cause I don't come to this movie for believability but to be entertained. In fact the movie is at its most enjoyable when it embraces the over the topness, like the tsunami washing away NY or images of the mega storms from outer space. What really does keep this from being better is Emmerich's inability to create real suspense or excitement when needed, f.e. when the wolves attack or said tsunami. It comes down to that Emmerich's CGI-created disasters are very impressive but not really that engaging.

30. 2012 (2009, Roland Emmerich): 6.0 - Well apparently Emmerich did learn a thing since The Day After Tomorrow, cause there is more suspense in this one during the disasters. It also even more extravagant than TDAT, and more enjoyable for it. The mega-tsunami, whole cities sinking into the ocean; it all extremely impressive. Alas in the moments between the movie is way less engaging, and with an overlong movie over 2.5hrs this does take it toll.

Watching these movies my conclusion is that Emmerich is at his best when he embraces the extravagantness and goes all out to impress. But what keeps them from being more entertaining is that he never really just goes full out pure unserious fun. There is always a serious dramatic undertone, maybe that tone is needed when you destroy almost the entire human race in your movies. But also in ID4 Emmerich shies away from fully embracing the silliness and infuses the plot with unnecessary serious drama. The failing to write good drama with decent characterizations is a major factor why these movies are just passable instead of really good popcorn blockbusters. Like said above they impress, but rarely really engage. So my advice to Emmerich is (not that he will listen to me or even reads this ;) ) is to focus on impressing and keep the plot simple pure fun or hire way better writers that can write engaging plots around your CGI destructions.

12-14. Attack on titan S1 E1-E12 8.5/10 Rewatch
15-16. The Witcher S1 Ep7+8
The two last episodes reminded me a lot of the action packed GoT episode from season 8 in Winterfell. Meaningless action scenes for a whole episode, where characters you don't really know die, and the leading character just watch them die. An end has been reached, and this series is so bad that i won't bother for now with S2. It gets an average of 4.5 for S1, which i have only given once in the period of 2015-2022, that's the only impressive thing done by The Witcher. You really begin to appreciate GoT even more than you originally did when watching this horse shite.

36. Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958) * 66 min.
Very low budget, primitive special effects, but somehow focusing on domestic melodrama more than the usual action works. This movie should be a disaster, but is mildly entertaining.

The Angel of Death gets stuck in a tree in this bizarre fantasy drama. If played a comedy, such a silly idea may have been fun and amusing, however, the filmmakers take a melodramatic route and it is hard to tell who is more obnoxious: an over-the-top Eily Malyon as a pure-evil aunt, or Bobs Watson as a whining and crying child. Lionel Barrymore and Cedric Hardwicke at least give dignified performances, but this was a weirdly depressing film that I hated.

145. The Rover (David Michôd, 2014) #Australia
In a bleak post-apocalyptic world not dissimilar to The Road, a guy's car is stolen by a ruthless gang which sets him on a path of retribution. This was actually pretty solid with Guy Pearce (cornering the market on super depressing, gritty Australian movies) and Robert Pattinson both doing great work.

Image
146. Pathala Bhairavi (Kadiri Venkata Reddy, 1951)
My usual complaints about Bollywood (too long, too melodramatic at times) hold true but this one does have some fun sorcery shenanigans at times that help it go down a little smoother than it might have otherwise.

Image
147. Ninja Strike Force (Godfrey Ho, Joseph Lai, 1988)
Man, I was going into some severe Godfrey Ho withdrawals after a couple months of noir and documentaries. Ninja Strike Force is a delightfully bonkers Ho/Lai flick that has all the usual trademarks: brightly colored ninjas fighting over inexplicable conflicts (in this case a magic sword that grants ultimate power or something), random scenes from a totally different movie pasted in (in this case we've got a kung fu prodigy with a brother suffering from tuberculosis), excruciatingly bad dubbing with dialogue that makes no sense. It's all quite glorious.

Image
148. Ghostbusters: Afterlife (Jason Reitman, 2021)
This "re-quel" leans into the nostalgia HARD and for the most part it's a pretty fun if somewhat slight and pandering ride. I watched it with my kids and they loved it, especially the back half once stuff really got going. My wife thought the little marshmallow men were adorable too.

Image
149. Ciao maschio a.k.a. Bye Bye Monkey (Marco Ferreri, 1978)
Really Cannes? This was pretentious gibberish.

Image
150. V (Kenneth Johnson, 1983)
Pretty solid alien invasion mini-series. I liked that many of the aliens seemed to have their own personalities like Willy that sympathize with the humans. That helped it give a little more of a dimension than something like Invaders from Mars.

Image
151. La decima vittima a.k.a. The 10th Victim (Elio Petri, 1965)
Woah, this was a super kooky fun movie with Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress in a deadly game of cat & mouse as part of a Running Man-esque TV competition that's been granted to society as a way for the rich and jaunty to get out their jollies in a healthy way. The set designs are classic '60s garish pop art and accomplished director Elio Petri really keeps things movie. I liked this one a lot actually despite the stupid ending.

Image
152. Lokis. Rekopis profesora Wittembacha (Janusz Majewski, 1970)
This one was pretty good. It starts a little slow but does a suitable job of creating a kind of creeping mystery steeped in weird Polish folklore involving a man-bear.

Image
153. Realive (Mateo Gil, 2017)
This one has a well-written screenplay with some interesting ideas but it does drag a little in places and the directing and set design

Image
154. Elektra (Rob Bowman, 2006)
One part Netflix' Iron Fist, one part The Next Karate Kid. Yea, it wasn't good.

Image
155. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Rob Marshall, 2011)
It had a few fun set pieces to it but really drags in the second half at times.

Yes for sure he’s a large part of it. But I already was liking it more before he appears.

166-168 - Riget I (1994) - (272 minutes with 33 to carry forward) - Strange things are going on at The Kingdom, a hospital in Denmark. There is an arrogant consulting neurosurgeon who left a girl brain damaged after surgery. There is the ghost of another girl murdered decades earlier. An elderly woman whose son works in the hospital is sensitive to spirits and tries to find out what happened to the girl. I thought this mini-series wasn't bad, but I didn't get overly engaged during it. I'll probably watch the second series eventually and the third season is due out this year, 25 years after the previous one. I doubt that I'll seek out Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital which is based on this.

169-176 - Stormworld (2009) - (632 minutes plus 8 minutes carried over from before, 68 remaining) - Jason and Lee are teenage friends in Vancouver who go out in a boat one day and get sucked into a vortex that takes them to a parallel world called Stormworld where there are many islands, but fresh water is a scarce resource. There are a number of competing groups who originally came from various worlds. Jason and Lee make friends with a girl with the nickname Flees and they work on surviving and finding a way home. It's a decent adventure series.

177-181 - Ark II (1976) - (341 minutes plus 59 minutes carried over from before, 9 remaining) - In the 25th Century, there is a small colony of scientists, but various disasters have apparently killed off most of the population and caused the rest to revert to feudal levels at best. Four scientists (a man, a young woman, a teenage boy, and a talking chimp) travel in a high tech RV bringing scientific knowledge to the superstitious people. It's a somewhat lame show, but is typical of the various Filmation series of the era such as Space Academy, Jason of Star Command, and Shazam. The Secrets of Isis was the best of the five live action Filmation series that I've seen with The Ghost Busters being the only one that I haven't watched yet.

182-183 - Quark (1977) - (207 minutes with 47 to carry forward) - Richard Benjamin plays Adam Quark, the captain of a space garbage ship who gets a number of interesting assignments in this science fiction parody. Among his crew are the Vegeton Ficus (a Spock like figure played by Richard Kelton), Betty One and Betty Two (played by the Barnstable twins - one is a clone, but they won't admit to it), and others. The show definitely has its moments, though there are some misses as well.
