Holy cow... That Ash Tree edition looks really nice but that's WAY above my price point. The local bookstore in my area had a nicely illustrated Folio Society edition of his collected ghost stories for I think around $150 and even that was out of my range.Leopardi wrote: ↑January 5th, 2022, 7:50 pm
I love me some M.R. James, so much in fact that I spent a pretty penny on a hardback version of his complete supernatural writings a few years back, and just a few weeks ago I purchased a copy of his autobiography, Eton and King's, Glad to hear you enjoyed his stories (for the most part)!

Best Horror Novels and Stories On-Going Discussion

82. Through the Woods (Emily Carroll, 2014)
Through the Woods is a wonderfully illustrated and unsettlingly told collection of gothic fairy tale horror in graphic novel form. I've read a lot of horror comics, and this one is one of the creepier and more effective ones I've come across. The use of color in particular is striking with deep reds and blacks that really give it an expressionist quality that exudes unease. One story in particular has a grotesque image that looks like something straight out of a Junji Ito book. The five stories themselves range from just ok to skin-crawling and overall make for a nice cross-section of different styles most in the vein of old folk tales and fairy tale most obviously influenced by Angela Carter but also the gothic tradition of writers like Elizabeth Gaskell and Mary Shelley. Much like the traditional fairy tale, the much horror in these stories comes from external forces encroaching on a safe haven, in the case of Our Neighbor's House, drawing them out like a leech, in the case of a story like The Nesting Place, an invader from without. If you like horror comics, then I will definitely recommend this one.

Scrolled through the thread. Realised I really haven't read much horror. I've read many of the biggest classics, but that's kinda it. The Exorcist and Psycho were ones that I read for some challenge here back in the day or at least I remember writing about them here. Good examples of the movie being more effective.
Anyway, I realise this is bit lazy of me, since I could do some research on the books and lists posted here, but do you have horror short story collection recs? Either by specific author, or many. I've read the essential stories from Poe and Lovecraft, but really not much else. Both classics and more modern stuff is fine. I tend to prefer more fantastical stuff.

So of the ones I've read for this thread, if you want to sample the breath of horror fiction, The Haunted Omnibus is a good one to start on to get a wide selection of pre-1940s stuff. The collected stories of M. R. James is probably also pretty important in the overall scope of horror. As far as a more modern collection, Dark Forces offered a good overview of the state of horror fiction in the '80s as did The Silver Scream. I haven't come across a really great short story collection of different authors that would cover recent years yet (although I suspect The Weird will be a really good one, but I just haven't gotten to it yet). As far as other single authors, I'm a big fan of Richard Matheson's short stories in general as well as Ray Bradbury's (although both did a wide array of sci-fi, horror and fantasy in equal measure instead of staying in a single genre). Bradbury's Dark Carnival (mostly reissued as The October Country) is full of great horror stories, and Matheson's Nightmare at 30,000 Feet and Other Stories has a bunch of good stuff in it too.Kowry wrote: ↑January 8th, 2022, 6:15 pm Scrolled through the thread. Thanks, cool suggestions! Not really familiar with M.R. James, and haven't read Matheson either. From Bradbury I have read some short stories, but not the collection you mentioned.flavo5000 wrote: ↑January 8th, 2022, 9:49 pmSo of the ones I've read for this thread, if you want to sample the breath of horror fiction, The Haunted Omnibus is a good one to start on to get a wide selection of pre-1940s stuff. Actually, when I looked at the description of a M.R. James collection, got an idea that it would be cool to read them aloud with friends, since apparently that was the intention when he wrote those stories.
Yea, I actually listened to the audiobook of his stories which I think worked pretty well.Kowry wrote: ↑January 9th, 2022, 7:03 pmThanks, cool suggestions! Not really familiar with M.R. 83. Mythago Wood (Robert Holdstock, 1984)
Brothers Steven and Christian are drawn to Ryhope Wood, a mysterious forest their father was obsessed with investigating and where they discover mythagos, myths and legends are rendered flesh and blood out of their imaginations. When Christian goes missing in the wood pursuing his mythago, a beautiful woman he thought dead but now believes may be remade, Steven finds his own incarnation of the mythago to have appeared from the wood, the wild and ravishing Guiwenneth. Eventually events transpire that causes Steven and Harry Keeton, a man Steven brings on to aid in his investigation of the wood, to venture into the woods themselves, bringing forth danger and destiny.
This dark gothic fantasy had a pretty interesting premise and at times fulfills its promise with engaging and philosophically stimulating passages on the role of archetype in the human consciousness. It's certainly the kind of novel that impresses critics, earning the World Fantasy Award back when it was released, and surprisingly has a clean and elegant prose that makes it quite readable. And yet, something felt missing for me. It seemed to take too long to get to the meat of the story, spending far too long on an awkward romance plot that was not Holdstock's strong suit. When in the woods themselves though, the book is a well-paced fantasy adventure with dark undertones of madness and murder. As an aside, I'm honestly not sure why this was included in a list of Best Horror though as the horror elements themselves are very light in general. I'm reading through the Jones/Newman books on the side though so I imagine I'll get to the rationale behind it as I've seen with others that feel non-genre.

84. Forget the Sleepless Shores: Stories (featuring "All Our Salt-Bottled Hearts") (Sonya Taffe, 2017)
Many of these stories are melancholy sea-tinged ruminations on loss and desire featuring ghosts and creatures of the dark as surrogates for our own inner turmoil. The centerpiece of the collection "All Our Salt-Bottled Hearts" (and the story that was actually featured on the NPR list) is a Lovecraftian tale of those in Innsmouth left behind, destined to be apart from humanity while also unable to be accepted by their own people. It's an interesting, unique story, and I can see why it's admired. Taffe's prose for the majority of the stories is willfully obtuse, over-written and self-indulgent but for this one story, she seems to reign it in to create something a little more special. Many of the other stories in the collection though are just tough reads to be frank. I found myself unable to focus on the text, the florid, obfuscated passages blurring into a morass of inconsequentiality that made it increasingly difficult to actually follow what's happening. Several stories are intentionally vague in their conversations and descriptions. Some are written in second person present tense. It all feels very experimental and even more poetry prose. I think a small subset of people will find Taffe's writing style absolutely captivating. But as for me, I have no desire to follow Taffe any further down the rabbit hole.

**Interlude: Goosebumps Breakdown Part 1:
So NPR was kind enough to put the entire 62-book Goosebumps series on their list. I hadn't really intended to read all of them, but my son seems to be into them at the moment. So I thought, hey, why not read along with him and post groups of them as we finish as a little side quest? I doubt I'll read all of them or possibly even half of them by the end of this, but I guess I'll see how far it takes me. I actually read a decent amount of them when I was a kid but don't remember much. Anyway, without further ado...
Go Eat Worms: I don't know why my son picked this one to read first. It's certainly one of the least scary of the Goosebumps books (of course, none of them are actually that scary to begin with) instead going for the 'ick' factor. Lots of worms being put in people's hair and down shirts, goofy shenanigans like that. The ending is by far the best thing about this one which is otherwise super lame.
Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes: Hey, lawn gnomes are kinda creepy, right? Well, not here. Instead they come off more obnoxious, sneaking around at night and damaging the neighbor's property, getting our protagonist and his dog in trouble. Even the ending where Stine usually tries to come up with some kiddie Twilight Zone kind of thing falls flat.
Beware, the Snowman! This was just dumb. Coming late in the original Goosebumps series, it's obvious Stine was running out of ideas. It even has a lame fakeout where the snowman pretends to be the protagonist's father. Pretty bottom of the barrel Goosebumps.
Shocker on Shock Street: Finally, a Goosebumps book that seems to legitmiately be capable of scaring little kids. This one is basically one long theme park ride of a book with the two main kids being constantly tormented by all the ooky stuff on the hot new Shock Street ride. Plus is has a kind of clever twist ending.
A Night in Terror Tower: This is another above average entry for Goosebumps with kind of grotesque torture tower as the initial setting before it switches gears into a loopy time travel story. This one also has a pretty decent twist that puts it a step above crappy evil snowmen and sinister lawn gnomes.
Of course an above average Goosebumps book is still pretty weak sauce for the average adult horror fan, so you know, keep that in mind with these micro-reviews.

85-87. The Complete Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft (1916-1959)
**Note: There were five different H.P. Lovecraft books on the list (two of which I had already read) so I figured I'd just read through the entire fiction of Lovecraft as a catch all for all of them. Also note that this doesn't include collaborations like Lurker at the Threshold which August Derleth completed based on a Lovecraft story fragment.
This audiobook collection of over 50 hours of material courtesy of the H.P. Lovecraft Historyical Society starts with the relatively straightforward "The Alchemist", his first published story, before launching directly into a novella that's one of the cornerstones of the Lovecraftian mythos "At the Mountains of Madness". It's an appropriate story to kick things off proper with as it gives you almost everything Lovecraft is known for, both for good and bad: you have his elaborate descriptions of otherworldly architecture and culture, his excellence sense of mood and atmosphere, his ability to build to a an impressive finale, his long-windedness and tediousness in belaboring points that could've been made more efficiently... I mean, by the end of this one, you should be either totally bought in or completely alienated, so in that respect it's a smart move.
Of course this being a complete collection, all the major touchstones of Lovecraft's mythos are here including "Call of Cthulhu", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", "Dagon", "The Nameless City", "The Dunwich Horror" and others. My personal favorites in the core Cthulhu mythos include "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" with its creepy fish people, the third section of "The Call of Cthulhu" (the only time we actually get the main god himself to make an appearance), "The Whisperer in the Darkness" (a macabre tale of alien mad science) and "The Thing on the Doorstep" (a strange tale of evil wizard body swapping).
Some of the ones I enjoy the most aren't actually tied to the overarching Cthulhu mythos at all like the creeping urban horror of "Pickman's Model" (I wonder if this was an influence on Fritz Leiber), the gruesome Frankenstein riff "Herbert West Reanimator" (which has a nice dark sense of humor to it), the amusingly self-referential "The Unnameable" and the more straightforward terror of "The Tomb" and "The Lurking Fear".
Not all of them are gems though. Honestly some of my least favorite are some of the longest like The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward which feels like a short story idea extended to novel length and the obnoxiously self-indulgent Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath. Also of lesser interest are ones that seem to exist solely to build out the mythos without offering much of an actual interesting narrative like "Nyarlathotep", "The Descendent", and "History of the Necronomicon".
It also contains some little curios that seem to stick out from the rest like "The Mysterious Ship","Sweet Ermengarde" (the rare straight up comedy with not even a little horror or mystery) and a discarded draft of "Shadow Over Innsmouth" that are really only of interest to completionists.
Of course this wouldn't be a write-up without mentioning Lovecraft's racism which is definitely there. You get touches of it in stories like "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" with his distrust of "the other" but the notorious "Terror at Red Hook" is certainly his most blatant and unappealing (which is a shame since the story itself is actually told quite well). Even an otherwise nice little pulp exercise like "The Rats in the Walls" is spoiled by a very unfortunate pet name.
One last thing of note to this particular audiobook edition is that I quite liked the 5 minutes of outtakes at the end with the readers themselves cursing Lovecraft's at times labyrinthian, overly prosaic and dense dialogue.
Overall while I wouldn't say I am an unabashed massive fan of everything Lovecraft ever produced, he was undeniably a massive influence on horror fiction and a damn good writer when he reigned in his most over-indulgent impulses.

88. Strange Toys (Patricia Geary, 1987)
9-year-old Pet's family is eccentric. Her mom and dad are lackadaisical and inattentive. Her 13-year-old sister June is both Pet's best friend and harshest critic, calling her fat constantly while also cultivating a toy poodle collection with her. Their oldest sister Deane gets into some trouble with some bad people and gets arrested, and the family skips town on an extended cross-country road trip until the problems blow over. They stop at every tourist destination and tourist trap they come across as a way to spend time. Along the way, Pet comes across a mysterious gentleman named Sammy who only wants Deane's personal diary. Pet doesn't understand it but ultimately decides to do it to make Deane disappear and stop causing her family trouble. This seemingly innocuous transaction sends dark magic repercussions through Pet's entire life as we jump forward to Pet at 16 and then Pet at 30, trying to break a familial cycle of regret and sadness.
I liked this one quite a bit, but I feel like the final third of the book just doesn't quite stick the landing. Still, it does a great job of building out the character of Pet, representing her inner voice at different points in her life as she wrestles with trauma and a sense of independence. The early chapters have this entrancing sense of magical realism and horror Americana to them that Stephen King has so often trafficked in, and it's interesting to see Pet's character arc leading up to pivotal moments in her life that center around bizarre voodoo rituals. As I mentioned before though, the final third of the book just doesn't pull everything together the way I hoped it would and leaves things a little unsatisfyingly vague. Still I think it's worth reading for the interesting characterization alone.

89. Dark Matter: A Ghost Story (Michelle Paver, 2010)
Jack Miller sets off on an Arctic expedition for a year with a couple of guys from Oxford University, one of which, Gus, he's a tremendous admirer of, bordering on obsession by the end. The first ill omen strikes when the sea captain tries to refuse to take them to Gruhuken, but they ignore his pleas and forge on. When Jack is left alone at the eerie and mysterious campsite after Gus takes ill with appendicitis and has to return to a town with better facilities, Jack begins to see things in the snow as he struggled to deal with the harsh conditions and isolation.
This one is something of a Yin to Dan Simmons' The Terror's yang. Both are about struggles of survival in incredibly cold, harsh conditions while being plagued with something supernatural. But where Simmons takes the macro view and follows over a dozen different characters who were crew on a major expedition, Paver's Dark Matter is much more intimate, a first person account structured as journal entries. Both do a good job of fusing creeping dread with wintry desolation, although Simmons may win out just by sheer virtue of magnitude of severity of conditions. Also I do feel like the ending of this one was a little too brief and a little anti-climactic. Still Dark Matter is a well-crafted novel with a nice sense of atmosphere and a very well-fleshed out central character worth che king out.

90. The Ballad of Black Tom (Victor Lavalle, 2016)
Tommy Tester is a scheming hack street musician who live in Harlem with his dad. Everything in his life changes when a storm of events converge around him. He meets a strange and eccentric old man named Robert Suydam who pulls him into an otherworldly conspiracy of cosmic horror. Meanwhile his father is gunned down by the police for something Tommy did which sends him on a perilously self-destructive path.
Man, this one was really good. This is a kind of re-imagining and elaboration on H.P. Lovecraft's notoriously racist "Horror at Red Hook" but rather than just following the police detective Malone, we follow and see the perspective of a black man who finds himself entangled in these events. Interestingly, while "Horror at Red Hook" was not a story that tied in with Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, Lavalle is able to tie it in pretty cleverly while still referencing the events of the original story. This novella not only improves and fleshes out the one-dimensional racist caricatures of the original story but improves on the story in a few different ways, widening the scope and creating a very cool character in Tommy Tester. Lavalle's much more sparse, narrative-driven prose contributes positively as well, avoiding the overly flowery digressions Lovecraft is prone to at times. I definitely recommend checking this one out after reading "Horror at Red Hook".

91. A Nest of Nightmares (Lisa Tuttle, 1986)
This delightfully twisted collection of mostly psychological horror stories is just great. It's rare to come across a short story collection, especially by a single author, that's solid front to back, and yet Lisa Tuttle brings us one right here. Tuttle has a strong grasp of succinct character building, knowing when to elaborate and develop the internal psyche of an individual and knowing when to keep moving. The pacing, often at a slow burn, is top notch with endings that are as often gut punches as they are slow twists of the knife. Her characters are people of sad, quiet desperation like in "The Nest" and "Flying to Byzantium" with stories that while not visceral are grim and sickening in their own ways. Others like "Bughouse" and "Sun City" are much more grotesque and blatant in their horrors. These two in particular actually remind me of Ramsey Campbell, which is definitely a good thing. Some of the stories like "The Other Mother" and "The Memory of Wood" plumb the depths of motherhood anxiety with ends that will tear out your insides if you're a parent.
Overall, this is an excellent collection of stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. While a handful of them are more pleasant diversions that outright brilliant, it's still rare to come across a tome this consistently good.

Shameless promotion: Valancourt's edition of Tuttle's The Dead Hours of Night just made the preliminary ballot for this year's Bram Stoker Awards. I haven't read it yet, but it might make for a nice follow-up for you...
I'm actually super excited that Valancourt is releasing Karl Edward Wagner's In A Lonely Place this year. That's one of the few books on the big horror list I'm working through that just doesn't seem accessible with it being super out of print and expensive online.Leopardi wrote: ↑January 23rd, 2022, 6:51 pm Shameless promotion: Valancourt's edition of Tuttle's The Dead Hours of Night just made the preliminary ballot for this year's Bram Stoker Awards. 92. A Sight for Sore Eyes (Ruth Rendell, 1998)
Teddy is an emotionally detached young man who grew up in a shit household with neglectful parents. He admires things a great deal but has never cared much for people, that is, until he espies Francine. Francine is a doe-eyed, sheltered young woman who lives with her father and smothering stepmother Julia. Francine was once traumatized from seeing her mother's murder, and Julia has kept her incredibly close to the vest ever since then. Harriet is an aging beauty living in a luxurious, expansive mansion with a distant and detached husband who has grown tired of her and vice versa. How does she factor into the proceedings? Suffice it to say, Teddy is willing to go a long way to get the things he wants.
Oooh.... I liked this one a lot. Rendell is perhaps most well-known for her series of Inspector Wexford mysteries, but in between those, she has been known to put out some dark and nasty little thrillers like this one. The book certainly takes it time in building the characters and setting pieces in motion so gradually you don't even notice until it all comes colliding together into a damn near perfect and devilishly twisted ending. While there are certainly aspects of this that could have been cut down on, particularly in the back story of some of the characters that ultimately don't play that major a role in the pivotal events of the book, it still becomes quite engrossing and as it goes on with a strong sense of character motivation and rationale. While it's hard to tell what Rendell's intentions were here, I really think the final act of the book has an incredibly dark sense of humor to it in how neat and tidy the little coincidences pile up. Definitely recommended if you like a grimdark character study that takes its time.
