Good luck on both goals!

Too bad that there aren't any Schrödinger films that are both Official and Unofficial.

The trick is to pick a whole bunch of new, awards-likely (or box-office-likely) films that you can see while they are still unofficial, and hope they get that status change in the next four weeks. Good luck with that!

Or... you can just watch an official film?

EDIT: okay i saw the context, but are there that many movies that will enter BO-lists before the end of the year? Don't think so, maybe 3 or so (Encanto being one of them).

However that means that you'll have to watch a bad quality version of a certain movie or go to a cinema (and pay money for maybe a movie you don't want to see) and movie theatres aren't open in every country.

Lets see, Cahiers already published their picks for this year. But you could try to target Library of Congress picks, the National Board of Review best film, and of course any upcoming Box Office entrants (if that’s allowed per the rules of the challenge anyway.)

I'm at another new all-time high myself but it probably won't stay this way with the Unofficial Challenge taking priority for me at the moment.

When someone goes dark, does it also hides his personal lists? Can't see the 3+ Official Films list anymore it seems, which is owned by Tim.

I busted into the top 100 for the first time, but it's kinda meaningless since there are 25 "dark" users who technically rank ahead of me. At least I did pass dark-Thorkell in recent times.

Somehow despite last year's very accurate prediction of what would happen this year, there still managed to be some surprises for me in 2021. I said that I would reduce my official check count to somewhere between 300 and 400, and wound up gaining 416 checks, although just two months ago I was on pace to gain about 340. I said that I probably wouldn't advance in rank by the end of the year (I didn't) and that I may have to pick up my pace near the end of the year just to maintain my ranking, and boy, did it seem like I had to do that, spending November and most of December chasing onuryz to hold onto my #17 ranking, only to be saved by my hero, Tim, when he went dark and gave me the last week of the year to relax a little bit. Tim, you're a lifesaver!

Despite the accurate predictions things didn't happen as I thought they would (they never do). Here's a point form synopsis:

- Pass rkzk on New Years Day, leaving me up by one in the rankings
- On the same day, January 16th, both xianjiro and Blueboybob go dark, leaving me up by three
- Spocksbrain goes dark in mid-February, leaving me up by four. At this point I'm thinking I'm bulletproof, my goal of maintaining rank for the year is in the bag
- In early May rkzk passes me, leaving me up by three. No problem, still lots of room to work with.
- In mid-August Spocksbrain reappears, leaving me up by two. Still looking good, I'd say.
- In the same week in early November, JamesCameronScholar suddenly reappears right as I'm passed by MMDan. I'm back to even on the year. Rkzk is on my tail and checking 2-3 official checks each day. Okay, now I'm in trouble.
- Frantically check shorter official films (this was the push behind my Runtime Challenge activity these last few months) to keep up with rkzk, and we bounce back and forth in the rankings until just before Christmas, when Tim2460 goes dark, allowing me to let rkzk pass me while maintaining rank.

That was a fun ride. I end the year with the same rank I began it, and the crazy stat I shared last year gets a little crazier: Since 2015, I needed on average of 857.6 official checks to advance each rank while moving from #22 to #17. Here are my updated stats:

Year # checks gained # official checks gained Pos. at start of year Pos. at end of year Max. Pos. Min. Pos. Range Avg. Rank (polled weekly)
2012~700~600704970482255.5
20131198968493050282240.7
201493476530223122925.3
201574289222212421323.0
201662344221212219320.9
201782258521202220220.9
201877855020192318520.0
201976959419181916317.2
2020106380918171814415.8
202170241617171813514.6

In 2022 I predict everything will fall apart for me. For the first time it seems very likely that I'll fall in rank, year-over-year, especially since I intend to keep a relaxed viewing schedule like last year (300-400 official checks for the year, most likely) that would leave me with roughly 10000-10050 official checks by the end of 2022. Take a look at the key players and their checking rate over the last few months (averages were taken over November/December):

Username Current rank Average official checks/day Estimated official checks at end of year
Fitz of Fury120.110255
rkzk132.510754
SanderO140.910110
MMDan153.210863
onuryz163.010733
flavo5000182.310194
nbats2110.012878
Dpka264.510284

Everyone on this list exceeds 10050 checks (the upper limit of my range), so what this tells me is that, assuming their checking rates hold up, Flav, nbats and Dpka will all pass me in 2022. And I won't be able to catch anyone ahead of me to offset the deficit, so in all likelihood (and barring any surprises) I'll wind up down by three by the end of 2022. But if I were to speed things up (say, a little more than 1.5 official checks per day) I might stand a chance. I don't know how I'd do it (work is very busy and I am very tired), but since I'd like to keep the streak of never falling in rank year-over-year alive, I won't rule that possibility out, so I predict I'll be somewhere between #17 and #20 in rank by the end of next year.
2020 update
2020 started off with promise, jumping from 18th place to 14th in the overall rankings, and then fizzled out over the rest of the year, leaving me at 17th place by the end. Here's a detailed breakdown for those interested:
2020 in review
- Pass seventhsamurai54 on New Year's Day, rising to 17th place
- Pass thoughtrepellent and winds in the last week of January, the same week JamesCameronScholar goes dark, bringing me to my peak of 14th place
- Blueboybob zips past me in mid-March, dropping me to 15th place
- Spocksbrain shooots past me at the end of March, knocking me to 16th place
- Tim2460 leaves me in his dust in mid-April, and a few days later I pass jerry warton, so I hold steady at 16th place
- Except for a very short excursion in mid-August where I pass xianjiro for mayabe a day or two, I stay at 16th place until the last week of December, when rkzk passes me, leaving me in 17th place

Last year I presented what I thought was an astounding statistic, that I needed on average 765.5 official checks to advance each rank from #22 to #18. This year was no different, with a bump of only one rank after advancing 809 official checks, bringing the average up to 774.2. If I were to gain this number of official checks per year I'd complete all currently official checks in a little over nine years, and if this quirky fact somehow held up I would still only be in 17 - 9 = 8th place.

Another interesting fact (again, maybe only to me): I checked 809 official checks, and yet the site increased its official check total by about 876 in 2020 (due in part to some big changes including the expansion of the box office and Cinema Tropical lists, and the adoption of the Pinoy list, which added 81 new checks all by itself), meaning I actually lost ground in absolute terms this year, the first time that's happened since 2015 when a whopping 1656 new official checks appeared (this was the big TSZDT adoption year).

Year # checks gained # official checks gained Pos. at start of year Pos. at end of year Max. Pos. Min. Pos. Range Avg. Rank (polled weekly)
2012~700~600704970482255.5
20131198968493050282240.7
201493476530223122925.3
201574289222212421323.0
201662344221212219320.9
201782258521202220220.9
201877855020192318520.0
201976959419181916317.2
2020106380918171814415.8

So what's to come in 2021? I pledged to slow down my movie watching, and while it'll take some time to adjust, it also means I won't be racking up numerous official checks next year. If I had to guess, my total will drop from the 500-600 I've come to expect the last few years down to 300-400. I'd like to keep to my streak of never falling in rank over a calendar year, but that might be tough this year. I'm only within reach of rkzk and xianjiro, realistically, and if I slow down it seems very unlikely I'll catch them. Meanwhile thoughtrepellent may well pass me at the rate he's checking now, so I'll predict I hold steady in 2021, possibly pushing to achieve this late in the year if I need to (and am able to), just to keep the streak alive.
2019 update
2019 for me can be summarized with just a few rank-related events, most of them not of my own doing:

- In the first few days of 2019 I passed rkzk, bringing me to 18th place
- In mid-May thoughtrepellent (AKA Cobac AKA Fori) went dark, bumping me to 17th place
- At mid-year I passed winds and reached my highest ranking to date, 16th place
- Right around Halloween thoughtrepellent returned from the dark and knocked me down to 17th place
- In mid-November winds suddenly came to life after nearly three years of inactivity, checking hundreds of titles and kicking me back to 18th place, my current position

So in the end I've moved up one place in 2019. Here's a year-by-year breakdown for me:

Year # checks gained # official checks gained Pos. at start of year Pos. at end of year Max. Pos. Min. Pos. Range Avg. Rank (polled weekly)
2012~700~600704970482255.5
20131198968493050282240.7
201493476530223122925.3
201574289222212421323.0
201662344221212219320.9
201782258521202220220.9
201877855020192318520.0
201976959419181916317.2

Looking at the last five years (to cherry-pick some stats by using the end-of-year numbers), I've gone from #22 to #18 by adding 3062 official checks or, in other words, on average I needed 765.5 official checks for each rank I advanced (using the average rank column it's a slightly more reasonable 527.9). The front page is not for the faint of heart! As for next year, if blueboybob and Spocksbrain continue checking the way they have been, they'll pass me easily, while there are two or three ahead of me that have been taking it easy of late, so all in all I think I should be able to advance one or two positions in 2020, with a bit more turbulence than I had this year.

2018 update
2018 was the roller coaster I was expecting it to be, with the largest range of rankings I've seen since 2014. It's also the first time since 2015 I've dropped to 23rd place, a result of the noir list adjustments made earlier in the year. It's no surprise that Xianjiro flew past me in July and never looked back. Jeroen0 going dark and Burneyfan returning (welcome back!) were bigger surprises, but they canceled each other out in terms of most people's rankings, including my own. JamesCameronScholar's meteoric rise in June was also a surprise, as was 3rd's sudden departure in December. Despite all these events, I wound up advancing one place in the rankings, though, so I can't complain.

Here's a year-by-year breakdown for me:

Year # checks gained # official checks gained Pos. at start of year Pos. at end of year Max. Pos. Min. Pos. Range Avg. Rank (polled 1/week)
2012~700~600704970482255.5
20131198968493050282240.7
201493476530223122925.3
201574289222212421323.0
201662344221212219320.9
201782258521202220220.9
201877855020192318520.0

(2015 looks a little funny in that my number of official checks exceeds my total number of checks, but this is because of the adoption of the TSZDT list, which netted me 228 new official checks)

It looks like 2019 will be a little calmer than 2018, with just a couple of people making a push for the front page and not a lot of activity at the bottom of the front page currently. There are a few users ahead of me that have slowed their checking or become inactive, so I predict I'll advance one or two spots by the end of 2019.

I'm ranked #519 as of January 1st 2022 (3467 official checks, 4730 total). I check 282 titles in 2021, among which 257 are features films (my second lowest number since I started keeping track 10 years ago).
I was 549 at the start of 2021, and 584 at the start of 2020. I'll surely reach the top 500 this year, as of right now I've got 42 official checks to go.

Just passed a milestone: my # of official checks (1991) is now higher than my rank (1987)! I was trying to land my rank and checks at the same number, but it didn’t quite work out. But there are two users who are rank 1990, with 1990 official checks at the moment—lucky them!

Cool!

I have one yuge off-topic milestone to share: 5500 IMDb ratings! (Features only, no TV episode and VG bullshit!)

For scale: 6304 total ICM checks, 4342 of them official. Also, my rank froze at #284-286 for over two months now.

I'm only around 160 checks away from that milestone -- and I have a bunch of unwatched Official shorts in my blind -- so it's certainly doable. The limiting factor will be what my focus ends up being this year, especially since I was planning to double my average rewatch count this year. We'll see. :shifty:

I see 1998...I see 100...where's the 2000?
A bit unclear on my part—I meant that I was inside the top 2000, specifically rank 1998 :)
Oh, OK. I understand now. Well, enjoy your kind congratulations. I posted that I entered the top 100 and drew 100% silence. ;)

Belated congrats on making the 100, Ebby. I'm catching up though. :shifty:

P.S.: This rise isn't as big as it seems since everyone around me in the rankings has a similar number of official checks. Couldn't resist a big gif though.

Looks like I will peacefully be taking over PA soon.

For anybody curious about my recent rises, I have lately become intrigued by my true/accurate ranking in the leaderboard. I have so many readily available Official short films in my blind (a few hundred at a guess) that I probably rank among the highest users based on feature length Official Checks seen. To bridge this gap, I am trying to watch a couple of Official shorts every day, or at least every second day. It will be interesting to see how high I get by the end of the year.

Oh, in Germany they're going to legalize weed this year
My bad, must have misread that :ph43r:

I am doing something really weird these days, I'm watching ... unofficial films. Like, random ones.
My ranking didn't go over #285 since November.
