Do ICM Members dream of official checks
1. Daredevil (Mark Steven Johnson 2003) 2/10
2. Elysium (Neil Blomkamp 2013) 5/10
3. The Inhuman Woman (Marcel L'Herbier 1924) 8.3/10
3.5. The Witcher S1 E1 5.5/10
4. The Witcher S1 E2 3/10
5. Good Manners (Marco Dutra, Juliana Rojas 2017) 6.8/10
6. Kiki's Delivery Service (Hayao Miyazaki 1989) 8/10
7. The Witcher S1 E3 6/10
8. The Withcer S1 E4 4/10
9. The Aerial (Esteban Sapir 2007) 5/10
9.5. The Witcher S1 E5 7/10
First enjoyable episode in the series, and is mainly due to character dynamics working decent as Geralt meets Yennefer for the first time, and the singing clown is not annoying anymore with his songs. There is also comic elements, which works in its favor.

10. The Witcher S1 E6 5.5/10
Much of the same as with the previous episode, it just happens to be boring in a lot of the scenes. In generel it seems like the writers have an issue, when characters seem to travel for a period of time, not able to fill it with substance, which is largely because the dialogue isn't interesting to listen to.

84. Journey to the Center of the Earth (Eric Brevig, 2008) #20000Leagues
I actually watched The Light at the Edge of the World originally to get the Jules Verne scavenger hunt task, but while it's labeled as Fantasy on IMDB, it isn't at all. Instead it's a sadistic story of pirates taking over a lighthouse to wreck ships to steal their treasure. Anyway, I watched this empty-headed Hollywood CGI-filled version of Journey to the Center of the Earth. It's not very good but the pacing is like that of an amusement park ride, and it rarely slows down. So it may entertain kids or people with extreme ADD.

Image
85, 2012 (Roland Emmerich, 2009)
I feel like every time I watch a Roland Emmerich movie, I can feel brain cells shriveling up and dying in real time. When you've got stuff like John Cusack ramping a limo over a fallen bridge then dodging a giant doughnut, and that's one of the more grounded parts of the movie, you pretty much deserve whatever happens to your poor brain if you sit through the whole thing.

Image
86. Isaac Asimov's Robots (Doug Smith, Kim Takal, 1988) #Foundation
So this is a short movie intended to be played before playing a board game kinda like Clue. The movie itself is based on Asimov's Caves of Steel and involves a murder that a robot may or may not have committed (YOU MUST SOLVE THE CASE!!). As a stand-alone watch, it's extremely low budget and hokey. The robots are laughable and seem to be modeled after Rosie from The Jetsons or something. Fans of the source novel should probably avoid this like the plague. There's supposedly a version of this made for British TV with Peter Cushing but I've been unable to find it.

Image
87. Eternals (Chloé Zhao, 2021)
So this was a fascinating mess of a movie... I've heard from some people that it's Marvel's worst movie. Honestly I think it was better than something bland like Thor: Dark World or Age of Ultron. This is a movie at odds with itself and its director. Where it excels is in the at times quite beautiful naturalistic cinematography and the well-executed character moments that at times play out like a conflicted family drama. Both of these strengths aren't surprising with Chloe Zhao at the helm. Where it has problems is in areas you'd expect. The pacing is all over the place. The plot jumps hundreds or thousands of years back and forward in time with no indication of what's happening, creating a very disorganized shambling narrative. Some of the effects work is pretty weak too, and honestly the movie just feels overstuffed. Nearly three hours long with around a dozen main characters, it'd be a tough balancing act for even the best director and Zhao just isn't equipped to handle something of this scope. Having said all that, it really feels nothing like any other Marvel movie and I could see it actually picking up some fans that my be tired of Marvel's usual quip-heavy action spectaculars.

Image
88. Malina (Werner Schroeter, 1991)
Man, this was a hard one to get a hold on. a slippery, dense narrative with shifting identities, hot passions and psychosis. It reminds me of a more complicated version of the film I watched a couple days ago Madeleine: Anatomy of a Nightmare. I'm not sure I wholeheartedly enjoyed it, but I definitely think it got better as it went and started to come together more. The first half really leaves you adrift with seemingly disconnected scenes and transitions, but it kinda sorta comes together... Kinda...

Image
89. Futari a.k.a. Chizuko's Younger Sister (Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, 1991)
Mika is the inept younger sister of the pefect Chizuko. When Chizuko dies in a terrible accident and comes back as a ghost, she helps Mika come into her own as a person. This is very much like many of Obayashi's mid-period films with it's touches of whimsy and nostalgia laced with melancholy. It's another one that if you are expecting the craziness of Hausu, you will be gravely disappointed, but it offers a pleasant story of its own if you can take it on its own merits. While Obayashi's directing is more conventional for much of the film, there are flashes of his more experimental, daring side like during the piano playing sequence and in the climax. Really the film's biggest weaknesses are that it's far too long (another issue Obayashi has sometimes) and that it veers too far into schmaltz. Overall, it's not bad though and while not one of Obayashi's best, it's not a total trainwreck like The Drifting Classroom either.

105 - The Preacher's Wife (1996) - 7/10 - Reverend Henry Biggs (Courtney B. Vance) spends so much time helping those in his congregation that his marriage (to Whitney Houston) isn't as strong as it once was. His church is also under threat from a property developer (Gregory Hines). He prays for help and God sends him the angel Dudley (Denzel Washington). This remake of The Bishop's Wife doesn't break any new ground, but it's a pleasant movie

106 - The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) - 6.5/10 - Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) has a traveling troupe of entertainers who seem from another age in this modern world. The visuals are great as expected from a Terry Gilliam film, but I didn't find the story all that compelling. This was also Heath Ledger's last film as he died during filming.

107-112 - The Chronicle (2001) Episodes 112-122 (474 minutes plus 6 minutes carried over from before, 33 remaining) - Too bad the show didn't get a second season.

113 - Isaac Asimov's Robots (1988) - 6/10 - This was actually better than I expected for what it is. I don't think the actor portraying Lije Baley really captured the character, but Daneel Olivaw wasn't bad. I still hold out hope that Caves of Steel will be adapted some day over a whole tv season. If successful, they could adapt The Naked Sun the following season.

A solid addition to the Disney collection, but I felt the ending and resolution were weak.

Not actively working on this, but I've seen quite a few already, so here goes.

Well, hopefully if Foundation does well, it could spark interest in adapting other Asimov stuff. Caves of Steel is definitely one I'd like to see done properly. Also apparently the BBC version with Peter Cushing was wiped and is considered lost for the most part. Apparently a few random clips of it have been found but not the whole thing.

Coming out of the weekend, we have another OP update! Since the last one, our pal from down under Sol finished the Scavenger Hunt! Congrats again for that! Who'll be next!?! gunnar continues to barrel through in first place we myself comfortably in second. But we have a pretty heated battle for third with sol currently taking it. But sol can't afford to be complacent with jdidaco looming in the background with another big dump of films waiting in the wings. Blupain and AB537 aren't too far behind, so it's anyone game at this point only about halfway through the month.

14. Dark Star 6/10

After reading a bit about the difference between the theatrical release and the director’s cut ahead of time, I chose the slimmer director’s cut for my first viewing. This must have been a good choice. There was an opening crawl that stated, “THIS IS A COMEDY,” which helped me get in the right frame of mind. I don’t know how I would have handled the beach ball alien otherwise. It still meandered over its short runtime however, and even though it had a strong ending I can’t go over 6/10 for my rating.

15. Spider-Man: No Way Home 8/10

The folks at Disney and Sony are doing their thing again. So much fan-service, but man if it wasn’t fun too. The scenes of
plot spoiler for 2021 movie release
the three Spider-Mans quipping back and forth
were great.

16. Tetsuo: The Iron Man 4/10

I know I’m about to be laughed at for daring to rate a Spider-Man movie higher than Tetsuo. But look, my primary reason to watch movies is for entertainment. Sometimes I enjoy watching the horrifying stuff or disturbing stuff. But this was nearly incoherent. Some shots were definitely well done, like the opening scene of the main character inserting an iron bar into his leg (ouch!). I know that this is a movie that could be an all-time favorite for others, but I am not that person. Ah well, I still at least like to experience these weird ones from time to time to see if my tastes are changing at all.
the list!
1. Don’t Look Up 6/10
2. The Matrix: Resurrections 7/10
3. South Park: Post COVID - The Return of COVID 4/10
4. Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey 5/10
5. Gremlins 2: The New Batch 6/10
6. The Running Man 7/10
7. Yu Yu Hakusho ep. 72-75 7/10
8. Yu Yu Hakusho ep. 76-79 7/10 (21 mins per episode = 84 mins total)
9. Yu Yu Hakusho ep. 80-83 7/10 (21 mins per episode = 84 mins total)
10. The Animatrix 8/10
11. Zack Snyder’s Justice League 6/10
12. Soylent Green 4/10
13. Speed Racer 8/10
14. Dark Star 6/10
15. Spider-Man: No Way Home
16. Tetsuo: The Iron Man

Yeah, I appreciate the push but I don't expect to finish in the top 5 here by the end of the month. Now that I've claimed my 2nd spot in the scavenger hunt, I'd rather focus my attention elsewhere. But it is interesting to see that I am hanging on to third, even though I am currently in "not trying" mode.

You can do it! You know you like watching sci-fi and fantasy anyway. Might as well capitalize on it.

Revisited for the first time in nearly twenty years, this still registers as a disappointment. The film's most striking problem is the new supporting cast; Carrie Henn is gone and instead Weaver is stuck with a group of reformed prisoners turned monks who lack spunk and wit. The biggest problem though is that the new story here does not advance Ripley's character arc while droning on about The Company and evil corporations (none of this satire is new).

And a note, because I know peeptoad or somebody else will ask, I didn't watch the Assembly Cut. It's over 30 minutes longer and as a film that I didn't like much in the first place two decades ago, it didn't seem wise to subject myself to a longer cut of it. Maybe that makes me a bad cinephile, I don't know.

16. Bai fa mo nu zhuan [The Bride with White Hair] (1993, Ronny Yu): 8.2 #Asia - While the martial arts is far from the most outstanding, tho still good and very enjoyable, the whole movie is lifted up by the performances and chemistry between its two leads Leslie Cheung & Brigitte Lin and the fairy-tale, melodramatic bordering on kitsch mood the cinematography and production desing creates.

17. Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965, Gordon Flemyng): 3.0 - The first of two Dr. Who movies with Peter Cushing as the Doctor. I'm a fan of the new series, but have never seen any classic Who. Luckily these movies are non-canon, so I could watch them without having watched any of the series. If these movies are any indication, I'm not going to check out more classic Who soon. First off for this movie they changed the Doctor into a human and he's not like any Doctor any I know. Of course with a performer as Cushing this could easily be overcome. Alas the whole movie surrounding him is an immense snoozefest. The only saving grace are the Daleks who are funny and kind of adorable with their voices and stumbling around.

18. Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. (1966, Gordon Flemyng): 4.2 - Better than the first movie, cause it has a better plot and supporting characters. Still, I watched this one in the afternoon and could feel my eyes again closing from time to time.
Watching some sci-fi/fantasy franchises and more, SHBC: 7
1. Encanto (2021, Byron Howard & Jared Bush): 6.8 #MagicalRealism
2. Men in Black (1997, Barry Sonnenfeld) rewatch: ? > 8.0 #Hilarious

6. Men in Black III (2012, Barry Sonnenfeld): 6.8 #TimeAfterTime
7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016, Dave Green): 6.0
8. Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959, Henry Levin): 6.0 #20000Leagues
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003, Gore Verbinski): 8.0 > 7.8
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006, Gore Verbinski): rewatch: 8.0 > 7.5
11. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007, Gore Verbinski) rewatch: 8.0 > 6.8

13. Deep Impact (1998, Mimi Leder): 6.2
14. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales [Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge] (2017, Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg): 5.0

Feels very average. While the original was too goofy, this one feels too serious not just in tone, but also in it's subjects matter. Though i do respect that it has a logical reason for them to be in the cabin in the first place, and not the typical cabin in the woods scenario.

This might have really worked as a comedy; the comic relief moments are the highlight here as Richard Dreyfuss finds himself able to influence others as an angel and makes John Goodman slap himself. As a drama though, the film is cloying, twee and borderline nonsensical. Would Dreyfuss would oh-so-happily set up his girlfriend (who he never really valued) with another man? And why does she need help when all her colleagues go gaga for her in a dress?

114 - The Wolfman (2010) - 6/10 - An American returns to Victorian England to find out what happened to his brother and ends up getting bitten by a werewolf. For the most part, this isn't really all that interesting.

115 - What Dreams May Come (1998) - 5/10 - Robin Williams stars as a doctor who dies in an accident. His kids had died four years earlier so his wife is all alone now. He finds himself in heaven and travels to hell to find and bring back his wife after she commits suicide. I thought the film was going to be a lot better than it actually turned out to be. The story was pretty blah and the visuals weren't really that great either. I might be a bit generous in the score I finally gave it.

116 - Chances Are (1989) - 7/10 - Louie Jeffries has been married for a year and has just found out that his wife is pregnant when he dies in an accident. He is in a hurry to get back to Earth and ends up reborn as a boy named Alex from Cleveland. 23 years later, he is about to graduate from Yale when he meets Miranda, the daughter that he never met in his previous life. When he meets her mother, his old memories start to return. I thought it was a good film. Some parts are a bit icky if you think about them too much, but it was entertaining enough.

117-120 - The Expanse Season 6 (2021) including x-ray shorts (318 minutes plus 2 minutes carried over from before, 31 remaining) - I thought the last season was good, though clearly affected by how short it was. It didn't rise to the levels of earlier seasons and seemed to lack a certain tension. I did like the Strange Dogs adaptation in the prologue. If they ever get around to adapting the last three books, they'll probably need to recast the two kids, though.

Moving like giant worms made of water, the creatures are absolutely fascinating and are easily the highlight here. The vast majority of the movie though is not dedicated to them but rather a soured relationship between the two main crew members and human corruption in the name of nuclear arms. The human characters are pretty eh and the first hour of the movie is a chore until the aliens appear. The film (at least in its theatrical cut) ends abruptly too.

90. Le avventure di Pinocchio a.k.a. Adventures of Pinocchio (Luigi Comencini, 1972)
I watched a 130 minute film version of this 6 hour miniseries and even that felt too long...

Image
91. The Point (Fred Wolf, 1971)
I showed this one to my kids. I had forgotten how weird and psychedelic it was at times with bottomless holes and decomposing whales.

92. Skyline (Colin Strause, Greg Strause, 2010)
93. Beyond Skyline (Liam O'Donnell, 2017)
Run! It's attack of the killer lens flares! The first Skyline was a pretty standard empty-headed alien attack movie. In an odd turn, I actually liked the second one a little more. Adding a game Frank Grillo as well as the awesome Iko Uwais (The Raid movies), a LOT more blood and violence and turning the back half into a weird martial arts with aliens flick makes it more entertaining for sure. It's still really empty-headed BUT NOW WITH LOTS OF FIGHTZ.

94. Visit to a Small Planet (Norman Taurog, 1960)
Relentlessly stupid...

95. I predatori di Atlantide a.k.a. Raiders of Atlantis (Ruggero Deodato, 1983)
Honestly I was a little let down by this one. Oddly dull post nuke flick from notorious director Deodato of Cannibal Holocaust fame.

96. Uchû sai sensô a.k.a. Battle in Outer Space (Ishirô Honda, 1959)
This was a pretty fun alien invasion with Honda driving an international cast.

97. Dune: Part One (Denis Villeneuve, 2021) #Hugo
Pretty impressive first half. Not surprisingly the movie is gorgeous to look at it and very faithful to the book. The material does tend to keep one at arms length though and Jason Momoa doesn't really seem to fit his role very comfortably.

I have seen the first one a couple of times and enjoy it a fair bit, helps that I enjoy the main actor. The second one was ok but not as enjoyable I thought. I have had the 3rd one on my hard drive for ages but just haven't got around to pressing play yet.

121 - The Tempest (2010) - 5/10 - This Shakespeare adaptation has pretty good production values and effects, but is a real slog to get through.

122 - Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) - 5/10 - I liked the first Venom film, but this one was much less interesting.

123-126 - Dead Gorgeous (2010) Episodes 101-113 (328 minutes with 8 to carry forward) - Three sisters are killed in a carriage crash in 1860. They get a second chance 150 years later as living ghosts who look normal, but have ghost abilities. Their family's mansion and estate have been turned into a private boarding school and they are enrolled as students there. This is a fun comedy/drama series and it's too bad that it only got one season.

127 - The Wheel of Time Episode 104 (62 minutes plus 18 minutes carried over from before, 21 remaining) - This episode was kind of slow for the most part.

Count = 127 Bonus = Complete
Spoiler
1 - Palm Springs (2020) - 8/10 - #TimeAfterTime
2 - The Matrix Resurrections (2021) - 7/10

5-8 - Doctor Who Season 13 Episodes 1-6 (2021) (328 minutes with 8 to carry forward) - #Europe
9-13 - La Brea Episodes 102-110 (390 minutes plus 10 minutes carried over from before, 6 remaining) but it is watchable. I'll probably stick around for the second season.
14a - Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks (58 minutes)
14b - Space Cases Episode 101 (24 minutes)
15a - Star Trek Prodigy Episodes 101-103 (70 minutes) - #Animation
