This deliberately paced drama might have really taken off if given more of a thriller treatment with characters who think that they are being followed and increasing deaths. As the lethargically paced affair that it is though, the film only works in bits and pieces. There is a memorable small turn by Max von Sydow who waxes poetically about what justice means and the final ten minutes are really well done, but any sense of urgency is absent for the most part.

5.) Blokada (Blockade) (2006) #666

It's incredible that this was released in 2006. Sergey Loznitsa makes it feel like it was released in the 1940s by essentially presenting the footage just as it was in the 1940s. He doesn't add any music or dialogue. It is equal parts fascinating and devastating, showing the brutalities of war with very little intervention from the director.

I haven't seen any of his other work, so can't comment on that. Landscape Suicide was okay but didn't really do a whole lot for me - probably won't prioritize seeking out his other work.

I think you'd be surprised. Most of Benning's films are documentaries consisting of only a handful of static shots and no interviews or narration.

Ivan Dixon is exceptionally strong in the lead role here, frequently trying to avoid confrontation but also strong-willed enough to not let all the bigots get the better of him. There is a particularly great scene where he is confronted while pumping gas and manages to keep things under control despite a noticeable fire burning behind his eyes. Outside of Dixon's performance, the film is more of a mixed bag. Subplots come and go - but Abbey Lincoln shines.

Alberto Cavalcanti's tribute to the city of Paris, this experimental documentary tries to capture the metropolis as "only a succession of images can bring to life". It is a relatively interesting premise and some of the imagery is downright phenomenal - most notably the iconic shot with all the eyes. Much of the movie though feels random and unfocused, including an elongated sequence in the mix that keeps cutting between still photos of food/wastage.

And yes - I did just go from one Nothing But film to another. :shifty:

6 - Murder on a Sunday Morning (2001) - 8/10 - #250 - This documentary covers the trial of a 15 year old black boy who was coerced by police into confessing to the murder of a woman outside a Jacksonville motel early on a Sunday morning. The police did almost no investigating and just picked the boy off the street as he was walking to Blockbuster in hopes of getting a job there. It's a good documentary, but a sad situation and a very bad look for the Jacksonville police.

7 - Muddy River (1981) - 8/10 - #2 - Nobuo is a third grader who lives with his family in their noodle shop by the river in postwar Osaka. He befriends a boy his age named Kiichi who lives in a houseboat with his sister and mother and just arrived in the area. This is a very nice film. It's kind of melancholy overall, but has good performances all around. I think being shot in black and white fits the movie well.

8 - The Visit (1964) - 8/10 - #661 - Ingrid Bergman plays Karla, a self made millionaire who returns to the town that forced her out of town 20 years earlier as a pregnant 17 year old. They think that she is there to be generous to her old hometown, but she is intent on revenge against Serge (Anthony Quinn), the man who fathered her child and then denied it. Nice performances and one that maintains its momentum throughout.

9 - The Promised Land (1975) - 7.5/10 - #47 - Three friends - a Pole, a German, and a Jew - decide to open up a textile factory in 1880s Lodz. The film shows the callous exploitation of labor by the few people with money who controlled businesses. It's a good film and is based on a novel from the late 1890s.

4 - Journey of Hope (1990) - 8/10 - #231

Started off pretty poor but it did pick up, never enough for me to fully enjoy it but enough to give it a better rating. Doesn't meet the rating cutoff for my list.

5. Diabel (1972) - 3/10 #50

I don't think I really understood what was going on here and the acting never really helped me at all. Definitely not making my list.

6. Jane B. for Agnes V. (1988) - 7/10 #618

My first Vardas and I found myself really enjoying it. It was a different sort of documentary. Also Jane looks so much like Charlotte, the apple didn't fall far from the tree there. Should make my list.

Late start, and won't be making much of an effort here, but I'll be happy if I end up with at least 10. I was at 409 seen from the whole list at the beginning of the year; would like to hit the bronze on 500<400 this year but...we'll see. It's not gonna happen this month anyway.

1. Band of Angels (Raoul Walsh, 1957) #434

Image

RIP Sidney Poitier. The reviews of this widescreen (1.85) Technicolor WB production often point to Gone With the Wind for comparison, which seems obvious but still a little strange; this is 18 years later, any number of GWTW wannabes had already come and gone in the interim, and it really doesn't seem to even be trying for that "epic" feel (well, maybe just a little). But it's got Clark Gable, and a romance at the heart of things, involves slavery and the Civil War, etc, so I guess that counts for a lot. In any case while this isn't nearly as overtly racist as the 1939 film, and while the performances are generally good (with Poitier probably the standout as an angry slave who hates his master Gable BECAUSE he's been well-treated, though it's a small-ish role) and the production values high, it's really on the whole kind of tedious and seems to be caught in a no-man's land between trying to be just slightly more progressive and also traditional enough that it could still play in the south and outside the big cities. Also the miscegenation & mixed-blood angle - heroine Yvonne DeCarlo is sold into slavery to wealthy Gable after it's found out that she had a black mother, something her planter father forgot to tell her before he died - just never seems very real here; perhaps getting an actress who was at least darker-skinned or (horrors!) actually was mixed-race would have made things more convincing, but I guess even in 1957 Hollywood couldn't do that - not when she has to kiss Gable at one point, and we have to assume they go to bed. Eh. I'm still not as big a Walsh fan as most other people who love the classic era seem to be, and this isn't going to help convince me otherwise.

2. Diabel (Andrzej Żuławski, 1971) #50

Jakub, a young nobleman, is in prison awaiting death during the Prussian invasion of Poland in 1793, when he is rescued, along with a nun, by a stranger - who quickly shows himself to be the Devil of the title, at least in action and personality if not in supernatural powers (though that remains an open question throughout the film). Jakub and the nun escape and travel across country to his estate, where he finds his father dead, his mother a whore, and a great many other disturbances. Always the stranger is near him, to goad him towards violence. This is - like the other two Zulawski films I've seen - a film of madness and chaos and violence, and while it is compulsively watchable and "entertaining" in a certain way, it goes even further than those others (Possession and Na srebrnym globie in it's misanthropy, here tilting into what I would call full-on nihilism, which for me is usually pretty hard to take. I'm fairly misanthropic myself I suppose but this endless parade of unpleasantness that ultimately seems to add up to a notion that nothing matters, that no one can be saved, that the world is in chaos and spinning out of control, is a bit too much. I did quite like the director's use of wide-angle lenses and jagged visuals (lots of nicely done hand-held shots here), and the electric guitar-heavy score by Andrzej Korzynski, and I can't help but to fall into his negative spell much of the time, but I'm not sure it's something I want to experience again anytime soon. A film I really liked then but in it's fairly extreme rejection of the world, perhaps one that I'm scared to like even more

I was intending to make this my primary focus for the month but after a relatively disappointing start to the challenge I have wandered astray with my viewings to watch other things instead. Here are a few additions since my last update:

8. The Plumber (1979) 6/10
Peter Weir's made for TV movie, The Plumber, is an intriguing oddity that pitches a young couple (Jill and Brian Cowper) against an eccentric plumber when he visits their apartment block to take a look at their bathroom. The repairs seem to be never ending and the clear class divide between the plumber and the Cowper's gives rise to some uncomfortable situations as Jill believes his intent is sinister. There are many amusing scenes though the horror elements aren't as successful as the black comedy and this holds the film back from being anything more than a mildly entertaining diversion.

9. The Medusa Touch (1978) 5/10
The Medusa Touch takes an exciting concept - a man who believes he has telekinetic powers that are capable of causing fatal disasters - and drains most of the life out of it by giving us a dull investigative drama that lacks tension or intrigue. There are some great ideas within the script and the film boasts an impressive cast of thespians, though their performances are largely lacklustre and this prevents the chilling idea at the heart of the story from having much of an impact.

10. Sunset Song (2015) 6/10
Terence Davies' epic saga about a farmer's daughter coming of age in Scotland during the early 1900s paints a vivid picture of rural life with its stunning cinematography that does an excellent job of transporting you back to the era. The bleak and tragic nature of the story should provide a powerful experience though the film drags in places and lacks the emotional pull for you to connect with the lead character. This is largely due to a shift in tone part way through when a love interest arrives on the scene, as the second half of the film has far less impact than the harrowing opening sequences. Sunset Song is clearly an accomplished work, and its conventionality makes it easier to digest than Terence Davies' more abstract efforts, though its overblown denouement holds it back from living up to the promise set out in its first half.

Fingers crossed I find at least one new addition to my own list before the month is through!

Keeping it real as a 500<400 challenge
1. The Inhuman Woman (Marcel L'Herbier 1924) #112 8.2/10
2. Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle (Eric Rohmer 1987) 8/10 #167
What a delightful collection of short stories, though centered on the same two girls from the title. The best one is the third, where they begin an argument of morality, justice, and motive in the perspective of crime. I begin to find it funny that all the female characters are some student with a humanistic background (this time ethnology and an painter). Like why has there never been any female nurse in a Rohmer film. His films are probably just stories about all his ex girlfriends throughout the time, and they never age.

They think that she is there to be generous to her old hometown, but she is intent on revenge against Serge (Anthony Quinn), the man who fathered her child and then denied it. Nice performances and one that maintains its momentum throughout.
I'm big into paranoia thrillers, so I absolutely loved this one too. Hopefully it will get a bit more momentum with the Cup this month.

This has been described as an "abstract depiction of the childhood of Aleksandr Dovzhenko". Given his importance in cinema history, a biography of Dovzhenko's adult life may have been more interesting, which is not to say that this is boring, but it is very all-over-the-place. Graphic war scenes are interspersed with boys running through bright green fields, while voiceover narration comes and goes and odd fantastical touches abound (talking horses).

The plot of this Slovak drama is so disjointed that it is often hard to follow with parallel plotlines occurring at the same and interspersed with scenes that are possibly flashbacks. Fortunately the film is so gorgeous to look at that the plot fuzziness is only an occasional nuisance. The whole thing is shot with a healthy variety of high and low camera angles, high contrast is used well and there are some great shots of things only seen reflected in sunglasses.

The protagonist here is quite a horrid individual and this would be a downbeat watch were it not for some kinetic editing, plenty of jazzy music and much mobile camerawork, all of which combine to make this quite an electric ride. The film has been compared to A Clockwork Orange and this especially comes through in the final fifteen minutes of near-comeuppance. This of course predated ACO, though Akira here is sadly less complex than Kubrick's Alex.

a dreamlike early feature from František Vláčil. The plot is very elusive with the film constantly going back and forth in time and replaying events from different angles and perspectives, but while baffling at its weakest, this is enchanting at its best - which is very often. The voyeuristic camerawork throughout is breathtaking, while the stark black and white tones lead to some simply magical nighttime scenes - most notably walking on water.

By all accounts, this film works better with historical knowledge, but even entered into with limited background, this is amply weird and unique. The story is pretty strange, involving a girl befriending a couple of pigs and playing a game in which she makes them human, or something like that. The real treat though is the animation style, which varies from painted sets blending together to papier-mâché stop motion animation, images bleeding into each other.

This has scattered memorable moments (nails to the eyes; forced coin eating) but constantly feels like it would have worked better as a briskly paced thriller. Tension rarely ever builds with some much time elapsing between the plot highlights, and as the filmmakers resort to including slow motion in some of the shootouts towards the end, the movie ultimately feels much longer than it is. The final scene with the family patriarch is certainly worth it though.

6. The Visit (Bernhard Wicki, 1964) [#661] 7+
7. No Name on the Bullet (Jack Arnold, 1959) [#173] [Rewatch] 8

Was quite interesting to watch these two with such a commonality in the plot, ie a character coming to town to execute a revenge and exacerbating the morale corruption of locals, albeit complete different settings.

This had its moments but overall I didn't enjoy the jumping from scene to scene very much, just seemed a bit disjointed. Won't qualify for my list.

Agnès Varda interviews and observes various local shopkeepers from her hometown in this documentary. It is fairly dull at first, but things massively pick up when a local magician enters the picture around halfway in. He is the clear highlight of the project, fascinating the locals with his tricks and sometimes even explaining how certain illusions (like a knife through the arm) are done. Unfortunately though, he is never really the focus of the project.

Keeping track:

I've wanted to watch this for a very long time. Funny but melancholy, like several other Czechoslovak New Wave movies.

Is it good ? Has been on my watchlist for a while.
The film has great visual and costumes, but for some reason I didn't feel thrilled.
I would have probably enjoyed it better if I hadn't seen the Mizoguchi before.
