Viewed for a second time, this feels so wildly inventive that it is hard believe that it is a pre-Keaton and pre-Lloyd production. Bits and pieces of the film certainly feel silly (being chased; dishes thrown), but the most part this is a droll and entertaining comedy that takes a satirical stab at the institution of marriage and conformity to social expectations and Ossi Oswalda is terrific as the 'doll' (her attempts to sneakily swallow are especially hilarious).

59. Star Slammer (Fred Olen Ray, 1988)
Fred Olen Ray makes a women in prison movie in space which is as cheesy and lurid as that sounds.

Image
60. No Men Beyond This Point (Mark Sawers, 2015)
Amusing mockumentary satire of a world where women have evolved to reproduce asexually and men are left behind

Image
61. Sukkubus - den Teufel im Leib (Georg Tressler, 1989) #WitchyPoo
Bizarre folk horror of a group of sheepherders in a remote area who, desperate for companionship, create a woman out of a gnarled tree stump and sacks of straw that they violate sexually. She is made flesh and seeks revenge. Some quite nice cinematography and the film has a certain fascinating mystical tone that kept me engaged.

Image
62. 4D Man (Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr., 1959)
A scientist is able to manipulate atoms allowing him to pass through solid matter through SHEER FORCE OF WILL and other stuff. Naturally it causes him to rapidly decay requiring him to drain the energy of others to stay alive. Campy and fun in equal measure.

Image
63. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Day Time Ended (Joel Hodgson, Rob Schrab, 2018)
Another solid riff from the second Jonah Ray season. I liked the Music Man parody song summarizing all the ridiculousness in the movie.

Image
64. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Destin Daniel Cretton, 2021)
Well I'll be damned. Marvel went and made a love letter to Chinese cinema. At times a graceful wuxia, at times a big budget CGI fest with Chinese trappings like several recent Chinese blockbusters.... It even has a Jackie Chan-style fight sequence in a bus toward the beginning. This is a fun movie that really doesn't have many ties to the MCU at all, so people who tend to stay away from them due to the requirements of having to have seen 20 other movies should have no fear here. The character development is a little thin at times, especially early on and Awkwafina is kind of annoying but otherwise I liked this one pretty well.

Image
65. Obyknovennoe chudo a.k.a. Ordinary Miracle (Mark Zakharov, 1979)
Uh hm... This was kind of weird. It's like a reverse Princess and the Frog where an eccentric singing wizard turns a bear into a man who can only turn back into a bear with the kiss of a woman. But then he falls in love and doesn't want to turn back into a bear anymore. There's other loony subplots going on too plus lots of musical numbers. I honestly still don't quite know what to make of this.

Image
66. Xtro 3: Watch the Skies (Harry Bromley Davenport, 1995)
Some marines get terrorized by a killer alien that sounds like a Jaguar for some reason (which I found absolutely hilarious and I don't know why). This isn't very good or original and doesn't really seem related to the original Xtro much at all but it's still got a cheesy '90s sci-fi charm to it that fans of the Sci-Fi Channel back then may get some nostalgia over.

8-18. Dark (First two seasons, 945 total minutes)
The small-town setting and fantastical elements immediately identify this German series as a Twin Peaks imitator. But it lacks two key elements of Twin Peaks: Humor and interesting characters. There's not a drop of comedy in this incredibly dour time travel series, and we barely get to know any of the characters. They're just people dealing with time travel and its ramifications. We rarely understand their motivations, their fears or desires, their quirks.

What we get instead is mystery and atmosphere. There's enough atmosphere here for the Weather Channel -- endless, brooding shots of forests and caves, along with a constant ambient noise score. And mystery is the only thing propelling the narrative forward. Through two seasons, the series develops about 25 characters and five different eras they can time travel among. Given that multiple versions of the same person appear, that's close to 100 different people for the audience to remember. Much of the series is devoted to explicating each person's awareness of time travel and relationship to other people. And after two seasons, I realize I just don't care anymore. Especially because the series can just keep adding new eras or, as hinted at in the Season 2 cliffhanger, parallel worlds. I'm not going to bother with Season 3.

Science is Fiction and Fantasy is Real

1. Left Behind (Vic Sarin, 2000)
2. Left Behind II: Tribulation Force (Bill Corcoran, 2002)
3. Left Behind III: World at War (Craig R. Baxley, 2005)
4. Project Moon Base (Richard Talmadge, 1953)
5. The Underwater City (Frank McDonald, 1962)
6. Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (James Hill, 1969)
7. Target Earth (Sherman A. Rose, 1954)
8. Hangar 18 (James L. Conway, 1980)
9. Nineteen Eighty-Four (BBC Sunday-Night Theatre) (Rudolph Cartier, 1954)

The second live recording of the first adaptation of Orwell's classic, and the one of the two broadcasts that thankfully survived. I haven't seen the 1956 feature film, and I barely remember the 1984 film, and indeed don't remember the book that well either, so this was a fairly "new" experience in a sense. The dimness of the visuals and cheapness of early British TV notwithstanding, this ends up a rather powerful production, thanks mostly to the performances of Peter Cushing as Winston Smith and André Morrell as O'Brien. Donald Pleasance is also notable as Syme, but Yvonne Mitchell's Julia didn't really register that much with me, maybe because the character is rather underwritten and everything is, after all, from Winston's perspective - and she is, at first, pretty much just an angel to him. It is very sad that this story seems to gain ever more relevance with every passing year, not less.

10. Universal Soldier (Roland Emmerich, 1992) (re-watch)
11. Universal Soldier: The Return (Mic Rodgers, 1999)
12. Universal Soldier: Regeneration (John Hyams, 2009)
13. Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (John Hyams, 2012)

I saw the first in this series - which also includes a couple of made-for-tv films that came out before the first theatrical sequel, which I didn't bother with as they don't feature either of the series' main stars Jean-Claude Van Damme or Dolph Lundren - when it was new, most likely when it was first on VHS. I have a distinct memory of seeing it with my roommate Tom at the time, and yet while watching it almost nothing came back. Well, it's really not all that memorable when it comes down to it. Cyborgs and "programmed" humans and androids and such have been around science fiction for a long time, and the concept of the "super soldier" - named as such - dates at least to the creation of Captain American in the comics 50 years before this first film was made. So nothing new in the basic concept, and even the idea that the soldier would be re-animated dead guys killed in battle is probably nothing special, though doing it in the context of a sci-fi-action film rather than horror is probably a little unusual. At any rate, the basic idea here is that JCVD and his sergeant Dolph were soldiers in Vietnam, Dolph goes a little nuts, and he and JCVD kill each other, only to be re-animated 25 years later by the gub'mint, which of course doesn't bother to take into account (or doesn't know) that Dolph was insane and homicidal, and that causes problems when something inevitably snaps. One of the things I like about this film is that they just don't bother to get into heavy explanations of any of this - it's almost pure action start-to-finish and the filmmakers just assume it's simple enough that the audience will get it; only near the end is there the most basic and cursory explanation of how the re-animation process works and it almost seems thrown in for laughs. The action is decent enough and Lundgren is really in his element playing a bad guy, but all in all it still ends up just OK, maybe because at this point there simply seems nothing at all novel or interesting about any of the ideas at play. Ally Walker brings some cuteness and charisma to the role of the TV reporter who ends up going along with JCVD for the ride.

The Return brings JCVD back, but nobody else from the original film, and ends up being on all counts the poorest of the series despite the presence on the wonderfully-voiced and super-buff Michael Jae White as first a disembodied computer which runs the UniSol program these days, then as the baddest-ass super-Unisol of them all when he decides to give himself a body and create his own new super-race to take over the world. It's JCVD back on the job to stop him, of course! Like all of the other films this starts out in media res in an action sequence and doesn't really let up, so that's cool, but it's one of those films which sets up the bad guy as basically Godlike, and yet we know that our hero will easily defeat him in under 90 minutes and that none of the supporting characters that we are supposed to like (OK just a couple here, his young daughter and another female TV reporter) will die. It's hard to make plots like that interesting in the first place and when you have expressionless piles of muscle like JCVD doing the work it's even harder. Meh

Regeneration has a slightly higher IMDb rating but I don't see any evidence that it's really any better liked than the second film, which is too bad because it ends up rather interesting overall, if moreso to think about than actually watch. That's not to say that it's some deep intellectual exercise, but the way in which this film - taking place mostly in a huge abandoned factory, the kind of setting that all the cheap sci-fi action films that don't take place in deserts seem to always rely on - seems to develop more layers of grimness and hopelessness as it goes on, and the sense of the post-Soviet political world that it takes place in being one of chaos on the verge of armageddon, is quite palpable. In the first scene, the children of the Russian PM are kidnapped and taken to Chernobyl, and the terrorists who have them threaten to blow up the place and release and immense cloud of radioactive waste - as well as kill the kids of course - if they don't get what they want; and they have their own UniSols to help out. It's up to an international team with newer UniSols to stop them and get back the kids, but of course this doesn't work and ol' JCVD has to be brought in. But lurking in the background is his old nemesis... Anyway, I wasn't that keen on this for quite a while, but the industrial grimness of the second half, and the way in which the kids kept getting away, and being endangered, and JCVD (or others) kept coming to their rescue was really...strange. Almost comic. And for some reason I was also reminded of Stalker a couple of times as well in the visuals. All in all it doesn't really work, but it's probably at least as good as the first film and the action scenes ain't bad at all.

And then we come to Day of Reckoning, John Hyams' justly celebrated second film in the franchise, clearly meant as much to be a criticism or deconstruction of this particular kind of action film as well as it's own very weird and I would say quite Lynchian (others have mentioned Gaspar Noé, which makes sense, but Lynch was doing many of the same things visually before Noé, and I think the narrative strategies owe much more to Lynch) pastiche of film noir and Apocalypse Now. This is one of those films I could probably describe in fairly great detail but wouldn't feel like I was spoiling much, because the plot is fairly nonsensical for sure - but it's also one with a dreamlike quality that keeps much of it from remaining in my memory, at least not in any kind of meaningful order, just a few days after seeing it. The two stars of the previous films are really only footnotes here - JCVD apparently kills the family of protagonist Scott Adkins in the very first scene, and Adkins then spends the rest of the film trying to track him down, learning a lot of things along the way about his own memories and his own past life that he'd rather not be privy to. Lundgren shows up only late in the film (as he did in the previous film) and is put to some lovely comic-supervillain use. It's not too surprising that fans of the series (how many of those could there be though?) didn't know what to make of this, it's simply not an "action movie" in the sense that even the previous film was, and those who want their punching and shooting and bad-guy-killing done in a coherent and straightforward fashion just aren't going to get anything they can handle here. I'm not quite sure I'd call this a "great" film after one viewing, in part because I wasn't sure how well the disparate genre elements and ideas were integrated myself, but it's certainly a fascinating novelty and in a completely different category than the previous films or, indeed, virtually all other American action films.

14. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales [Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge] (2017, Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg): 5.0 - more of the same, but duller.

15. Armageddon (1998, Michael Bay) rewatch: ? > 6.8 - Bay doesn't aim in anyway for realism, he's making a big popcorn blockbuster. So his motto is go big or go home, and commits 100% to this. This does work better in the action than emotional scene's. In the first it results in often entertaining spectacle, in the second it steers into easy sentimentally at times. The movie is at it best when it focus on its ragtag team comradery.
Watching some sci-fi/fantasy franchises and more, SHBC: 6

To be fair, it's received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and I've been fairly accused of having extremely high standards for TV series.

Suffers from being quite boring and has probably the worst dialogue in the series so far in the Geralt storyline. God damn

Does Capricorn One count as sci-fi? It has the sci-fi tag on ICM but not on IMDb.

81 - The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986) - 7/10 - A Cro-Magnon toddler is saved and adopted by a Neanderthal tribe and grows up to be Daryl Hannah. I thought this wasn't really as bad as I'd heard and I enjoyed the film. It isn't great cinema, but it was okay.

82 - Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) - 7.5/10 - An entertaining adaptation of the Jules Verne novel with James Mason, Pat Boone, and Arlene Dahl. A professor from Edinburgh leads an expedition into an Icelandic volcano and discovers all sorts of interesting things on the way to the center of the Earth.

83 - Finian's Rainbow (1968) - 7/10 - An Irish man and his daughter arrive in the United States early in the 20th Century with a crock of gold stolen from a leprechaun. They find a home in an integrated community that has a racist senator nearby. The movie is kind of absurd, but is still entertaining with good music. It's strange to think that Francis Ford Coppola went from directing this to directing The Godfather just two films later.

84 - On the Beach (1959) - 6/10 - Life in the Northern Hemisphere is wiped out after a nuclear war. An American submarine found safe harbor in Australia, at least until the radiation cloud reaches there in six months. The film has a good cast with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and others. They give decent performances, but the film as a whole is pretty slow and dull.

85 - Shanks (1974) - 5/10 - A strange movie about a deaf mute who is skilled in puppetry, but has a miserable life thanks in part to his cruel sister and her husband. He gets a job with a scientist and learns how to reanimate dead bodies. He uses dead bodies to get even and to have some fun.

86 - Hereafter (2010) - 8/10 - Clint Eastwood directed this film about an American psychic who doesn't practice anymore, a French journalist who died and was resuscitated, and a boy from London who lost his brother. The three have their own individual experiences before their stories intertwine. I thought it was very well done and kept me interested throughout. The tsunami scene at the beginning was impressive.

87-92 - Charlie Jade (2005) Episodes 103-112 - (455 minutes plus 25 minutes carried over from before, 44 remaining) - The show is getting better, though it's still average at best.

This benefits from a decent idea, however, the film is very vague about how the fourth person managed to get trapped aboard (without takeoff noises waking him) to the point that the situation feels illogical. The deliberate pacing is great though, a divine score create a real sense of unease and there are excellent sets and spectacular scenes in space. Not all the character drama clicks either, but all four actors do well within the confines of their roles.

Less straightforward than I recalled this being, but still Richard Kelly's most mainstream movie and worse for it. The first third is really well done, with Kelly capturing the mysteriousness of the box and the man behind the box really well. Where the film falls apart is when the couple (inevitably) push the button. Whereas Richard Matheson's original short story ended shortly after this, Kelly ludicrously prods into the origins of the box and mysterious man.

There are several wacky elements here, from the pants-only father scurrying about and banging into things, to a spell that allows the duo to impersonate someone - but only if they can avoiding lying. It is also interesting seeing unicorns behaving like raccoons and dragons as pets. The dramatic backbone of the film though is a bit dull. The brothers must of course learn to get on and live without their dad; the main one also has come out of his shell (yawn).

Ha! I didn't even see that piece of the convo. The turtles are cool... Heavy Metal 2000 is on prime right now and I was just randomly surfing for something mindless to watch, and there it was like a beacon in the night. (a sub-par beacon...)

This carves a fairly down-to-earth protagonist, struggling to not be envious of her talented siblings and wanting to fit in. The magical family house is quite something too, seemingly a living member of the clan, and the film has lots of bright, dazzling colours. The overall story and journey at hand though feel like cookie cutter stuff. There is never any doubt that our lead will succeed and eventually gain acceptance; I wanted a bit more comedy too.

Do ICM Members dream of official checks
1. Daredevil (Mark Steven Johnson 2003) 2/10
2. Elysium (Neil Blomkamp 2013) 5/10
3. The Inhuman Woman (Marcel L'Herbier 1924) 8.3/10
3.5. The Witcher S1 E1 5.5/10
4. The Witcher S1 E2 3/10
5. Good Manners (Marco Dutra, Juliana Rojas 2017) 6.8/10
6. Kiki's Delivery Service (Hayao Miyazaki 1989) 8/10
7. The Witcher S1 E3 6/10
8. The Withcer S1 E4 4/10
Suffers from being quite boring and has probably the worst dialogue in the series so far in the Geralt storyline. God damn
This would just be #7, right? To round out the other episode you posted previously? Or are each of these episodes over 80 minutes?

Eh, this is a tricky one. It's been allowed in the past on a technicality, so I guess so. The main sci-fi element of it is the planned Mars mission at the beginning which was much further away from reality than the film implied at the time.

Thanks, guys. After all that, I almost felt like posting "that's it for me, flavo; thanks for hosting" - but I've already seen another fantasy film, albeit a watch for one of the other challenges that happens to count here. I'll definitely go at a lighter pace though for the rest of the month now. I really want to work on the 500<400 list a bit more, plus I have some stuff lined up to watch that couldn't possibly be called sci-fi or fantasy unless I got very, very creative...

This has been described as an "abstract depiction of the childhood of Aleksandr Dovzhenko". Given his importance in cinema history, a biography of Dovzhenko's adult life may have been more interesting, which is not to say that this is boring, but it is very all-over-the-place. Graphic war scenes are interspersed with boys running through bright green fields, while voiceover narration comes and goes and odd fantastical touches abound (talking horses).

2. Elysium (Neil Blomkamp 2013) 5/10
3. The Inhuman Woman (Marcel L'Herbier 1924) 8.3/10

6. Kiki's Delivery Service (Hayao Miyazaki 1989) 8/10
7. The Witcher S1 E3 6/10
8. The Withcer S1 E4 4/10
Suffers from being quite boring and has probably the worst dialogue in the series so far in the Geralt storyline. God damn
This would just be #7, right? To round out the other episode you posted previously? Or are each of these episodes over 80 minutes?
It's four episodes total of 60 min each (240 total). That amount to 3 points. When i did the third episode it didn't fit, so i just called it 6.5. knowing all well it would be 7 in the future.

Ah, ok. If you're doing the rolling points (not everyone does), please include the math in there of how you're getting the points. Thanks.

67. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Ator, the Fighting Eagle (Joel Hodgson, Rob Schrab, 2018)
The season finale of the second Netflix season of MST3K, this is a pretty good one with a nice cameo from a blast from the past, Mr. J "Elvis" Weinstein who longtime fans will recognize as Doctor Forrester's very first sidekick way back in the very 1st season (and in the KTMA era as well).

ImageImage
68. A Touch of Genie (Joseph W. Sarno, 1974)
69. The Mislayed Genie (Eric Jeffrey Haims, 1973)
Here we have a sexy genie double feature. It's no surprise than the adult film industry used genies as a springboard for sad, lonely guys to get busy, and I'm sure these aren't the only two examples. Of the two, A Touch of Genie is the better one. Joe Sarno is an actual competent director and delivers what is at times a genuinely amusing sex comedy that has a little bit of a meta vibe to it as our hapless loser lead wishes on his cute genie to become various adult film stars like Harry Reems and John Ashton. The Mislayed Genie is definitely a step down in production values and the genie is a saucy black guy that lives in the main character's penis, only popping out when it's rubbed... Otherwise it's pretty standard raunch fest.

Image
70-72. Tin Man (Nick Willing, 2007)
This was weird and not really that great honestly. Tin Man is a weird hodgepodge of Wizard of Oz as filtered through steam punk, westerns and more adult dark fantasy. The tone is all over the place with random spurts of silliness and comedy mixed with super serious dark scenes of murder, torture and menace. Also I've always had a problem with Zooey Deschaniel as a dramatic actress. Her delivery is fairly flat at times. Also Alan Cummings kinda wears me down. Neal McDonough as the "tin man" gives a solid performance but feels like he's in a completely different film than the rest of the cast and Richard Dreyfuss is just ridiculous. The plot meanders at times and feels very busy and muddled at other times. I also got a laugh out of this being nominated for some Visual Effects Award because the effects look hilariously dated in places with lots of awkward CGI that feels like it's from a decade earlier in places. Overall, I can't say I was a fan of this.

Image
73. Virus (John Bruno, 1999) #OutsideTheBubble
This notorious alien ripoff may be most infamous for Jamie Lee Curtis slamming it on her press tour for it, at one point referring to it as the worst movie she's made (which I dunno Jamie Lee... You've been in some turds over the years...). But yea, the setup is basically the exact same as Alien, Event Horizon and a billion other movies like this except on the ocean. The premise itself is just preposterous nonsense science but it might be kinda fun to watch as a riffable party movie.

Image
74. Bible! (Wakefield Poole, 1974)
Rising above the horny schlock that guys like Bob Chinn and Carlos Tobalina put out, you have a handful of directors that worked in the adult film industry on occasion or predominantly that actually received critical accolades at times. Guys like the aforementioned Joe Sarno along with Radley Metzger, Anthony Spinnelli and the director of this film Wakefield Poole have shown that at times they were capable of more inventive or interesting ideas beyond the usual pizza guy/cable guy boink fest. This film is Wakefield Poole's (VERY LOOSE) interpretation of certain scenes of the Holy Bible including Adam & Eve as seaside rendezvous, Samson & Delilah with a cackling blue dwarf and a weird psychedelic desert visualizing the immaculate conception. Unlike some of Poole's other films, this isn't actually a hardcore adult film, more highly experimental sexploitation. Half the time I couldn't figure out what the hell was happening but I will at least applaud Poole for thinking outside the box.

Image
75. Jonathan (Bill Oliver, 2018)
Jonathan stars Ansel Elgort as John/Jonathan, two personalities sharing a single body. Their lives were chaos until a progressive doctor created a device that allows them to share the body in 12-hour intervals. They communicate by filming daily video diaries of their interactions and engagements. All is well unlike night-time John meets a girl who daytime Jonathan spurns/confuses, which sends John spiraling into a world of loneliness and hopelessness. This was actually a pretty interesting movie and Elgort does a solid job of portraying two different people who have distinct but similar personalities as twins often have rather than the more caricatured approach some split personality films have of super good/super evil. Instead there's a lot of grey here that leads to some interesting character dynamics.

12. Don't Look Up (Adam McKay, 2021) 7/10 #RforRocket
13. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Destin Daniel Cretton, 2021) 6/10
14. Boss Level (Joe Carnahan, 2021) 6/10

I will certainly rewatch Don't Look Up in the upcoming months. It's a great film for what it sets out to be and achieve. I'm sure I'll enjoy it even more a second time around and a higher rating is likely.

Shang-Chi provides good fun, just like Boss Level. I had a much lover expectations for both films. While Shang-Chi doesn't aim for a rich story development, it shines with astounding quality of visual effects and inventive action sequences.

QUESTION: Does Shang-Chi qualify for "a film with alternate dimensions" challenge?

22. Into the Woods (Marshall, 2014) 6330 checks, 2 official lists
A tiresome and lifeless adaptation of the musical. It shouldn't have been too hard to widen the scope and give it a sense of magic and satire, but the bad staging and butchering of the original book (in order to remove the non-Disney sex and death) means it ends up being meaningless and claustrophobic.
3/10

Image

23a. The X Files: Fire (Shaw, 1993) 147 checks, 0 official lists
Standard monster-of-the week with a good turn from Mark Sheppard as a pyrokinetic villain. There's also a love triangle which more could have been done with as Mulder's old girlfriend is introduced (and is never heard from again after this episode).
5/10

Image

23b. The X Files: Eve (Gerber, 1993) 149 checks, 0 official lists
Another monster-of-the-week that benefits from creepy twins. Although this is far from the best episode it does have the series' trademark sinister atmosphere.
6/10

Image

24. Wrath of the Titans (Liebesman, 2012) 8124 checks, 1 official list
This is modern blockbuster filmmaking by the numbers, with all the perfunctory plotting that entails, but it's better paced and more fun than the previous installment from what I remember, and doesn't skimp on the action or special effects.
4/10

Image

25. The Return of Captain Invincible / Legend in Leotards (Mora, 1983) 57 checks, 0 official lists #Australia
An ahead-of-its-time deconstruction of superhero tropes. This was largely ignored at the time due to some poor film-making and a budget that can't even begin to realise the superhero antics required. What makes it worth watching are the songs, two of which, written by Richard O'Brien and sung by Christopher Lee, are amazing. Even the direction of the film seems to lift in these scenes.
5/10

Image

26. Epic (Wedge, 2013) 4620 checks, 1 official list
The title made me think this was going to be a satire of epic fantasies, but it turns out to be a generic name for a shallow fantasy story that is very close to Avatar or Ferngully. Nice music and visuals, but otherwise disposable kids' fare.
