10 - The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) - (Argentina) - 7/10 - A retired legal counselor decides to try and write a book based on a rape/murder case from 25 years earlier. He meets up with his former boss, a woman that he was in love with, but was unable to act on his feelings. The film flashes back to the case for much of the film. I thought it was good, but not great.

It's really heartwarming to see how folks (yourself and others) are warming towards this Punch the Clock. I never know what to expect when I make comedy recommendations since comedy is such a subjective genre, but I'm glad that I'm not the only one to enjoy this effort.

I have been meaning to find the time to do write-ups, but this month has just been too hectic for me. I'll join in now, so that I don't come the last day - and damn, I really surpassed my original goals for this challenge. I have more films lined up for the coming week as well.

1. Jogo de Cena / Playing (2007, Eduardo Coutinho) Brazil

An interesting (unknowing) revamp of Eustache's A Dirty Story, where tales are first told by real women and then performed by actors. There is potential here and there is emotional resonance, but it is also done entirely in the talking heads format - and cutting between the stories is the sole type of cinematic suspense (beyond the premise). Certain stories do well on their own, but there is a degree of mundanity and repetitiveness between that without anything else leaves this in the "just good" camp. 6/10.

2. Bicho de Sete Cabeças / Brainstorm (2000, Laís Bodanzky) Brazil

I am often taken in by dirty/ugly films that tries to emulate documentary filmmaking or bring a kind of low-fi feels to a grim world to make the impact even stronger. However, here, I don't quite see the acclaim. While the acting borders on absolute camp, unlike many of its predecessors from Brazil's Cinema Marginal, it feels like it is taking itself entirely seriously. In fact it not only comes across, but is, a very clear and proselytizing attack at mental health facilities, and is simply preachy. The weak acting does not go well with this tone at all, and the self-seriousness makes it feel more like a modern incarnation of Reefer Madness with better intentions. 4/10.

3. O Casamento / The Marriage (1976, Arnaldo Jabor) Brazil

An interesting companion piece of the above, as here, the stripped bare, overacted and hectic - yet minimalist - world of Arnaldo Jabor (who is associated more with the mainstream side of Cinema Novo rather than Cinema Marginal) shows just how captivating lo-fi can be. In the end it lacks the energy, insanity and greater whole of a Rogério Sganzerla film - but it still a really fun thrill ride. 6/10.

3 from Carlos Hugo Christensen

Image

4. El ángel desnudo / The Naked Angel (1946, Carlos Hugo Christensen) Argentina 5/10
5. La muerte camina en la lluvia / Death Walks In The Rain (1948, Carlos Hugo Christensen) Argentina 6/10
6. La trampa / The Trap (1949, Carlos Hugo Christensen) Argentina 7/10

Image

Carlos Hugo Christensen is someone who grew out of 40s melodrama with some sinister overtones, before sneaking into more traditional and creative noir territory. The films, even his best, are overwrought, and can be a little overbearing and overacted - but what you immediately notice is the strong filmmaking, especially works with creative angles and shots to give his films a bit more life. The move from the fairly over the top The Naked Angel (which may have been more evocative then but now feels weighted down a little by its view on "innocence") to the more comedic and pulpy mystery thriller Death Walks In The Rain was a delight - and to see him move on to a (granted, obvious, complete with references to the Ingrid Bergam/Charles Boyer film) Gaslight or Secret Beyond the Door... type romantic thriller with The Trap - which, despite melodramatic tendencies and some sloppier writing/acting felt like an incredibly tight, nuanced and creative production that kept building the tension - was another sign that this is a director growing in his potential.

7. Em Compasso de Espera (1969, Antunes Filho) Brazil

Image

A stark, brutal and playful look at race relations in Brazil, with a strong lead, moderate surreal elements and evocative and expressive black and white cinematography drenched in light. It is a little rough around the edges, especially when it comes to sound, but this is an absolute delight that is both intellectual/challenging and atmosheric/visceral. I would strongly recommend it. (The usage of The Who and other late 60s music was also a big positive surprise, even if it was not the strongest portion of the film). 7.5/10.

8. Breve cielo / Brief Heaven (1969, David José Kohon) Argentina

A sparse more socially realist, but still playful tale of a romance not quite meant to be. 7/10.

9. La vida útil / A Useful Life (2010, Federico Veiroj) Paraguay

A film seemingly by cinephiles for cinephiles, set in a Cinemateque that is about to be shut down and focuses on an employee readjusting after its downfall. The b/w cinematography is absolutely beautiful, but for the majority of the film, this is all it has going for it, as it intercuts people answering phones, discussing films on a radio show, meetings, general advertising, etc. and it just feels flat and tame. Near is no real cinematic drama here, no real atmosphere or characters - at best, we feel a sense of camaraderie with the employees and fellow film buffs - but it does not feel like it is revealing or relaying anything. It is simply showing their work-day, and without any real atmosphere or hook. However, as the film moves away from the cinematheque and into the life beyond, there are some genuinely strong, even great scenes that elevate the work as a whole. 6/10.

10. Valentín (2002, Alejandro Agresti) Argentina

A delightful and well-made coming of age film set in the 50s/60s, complete with the soft colour palette and a gallery of fun, mean and/or complex adult characters. 7/10.

11. O Amuleto de Ogum / The Amulet of Ogum (1974, Nelson Pereira dos Santos)Brazil

It is nice to see Nelson Pereira dos Santos break free from the more dark, serious and stripped-down earlier works, to this kind of mental 70s effort that has a "who the hell cares, let's have fun" type of atmosphere and style. A blind street performer tells a "true tale he just invented" to robbers with guns to save his life, and the tale is all kinds of crazy shoot-em up nonsense with magic and endless violence and blood in regular crazy 70s Brazilian fashion. The story and style itself does not really stand out that much in terms of all the craziness coming out of Brazil at the time, and it has the feeling of a rushed b-production - therefor it is lucky that it never takes itself seriously. The ending is also extremely fun and a nice add-on. 6/10.

12. El habilitado (1971, Jorge Cedron) Argentina
The one thing that does not work that well in El habilitado is unfortunately the core premise of a set of blue-collar workers in a basement. It character gallery and conversations come across as a bit too childish and try-hard in the comedic elements (which just seems forced). However, outside, with the lead on his bike, the cutting family dinners, the long walk with a lover, etc. are hypnotising and spectacular. It shows a lot of potentials, and is overall a good work, I just wish it had delivered better. 6/10.

13. Aniceto (2008, Leonardo Favio) Argentina

Image

In Anicento Leonardo Favio remakes or rather re-imagines his classic The Romance of Aniceto and Francisca (1967) as performative dance. At its heights it is simply magical, filled with poetitic, dramatic and visceral power. The staging is artificial and the dances are impressive and frequently ran. Its main issue is that it relies of a skeleton version of the plot, with shorter dialogue scenes drizzled in - and it does not quite work on that level. The stylistic elements are on the other hand through the roof and I'd recommend it for this alone. 6.5/10.

3 from Eliseo Subiela

Image

14. Hombre mirando al sudeste / Man Facing Southeast (1986, Eliseo Subiela) 7/10
15. Últimas imágenes del naufragio / Last Images of the Shipwreck (1989, Eliseo Subiela) 8/10
16. El lado oscuro del corazón / The Dark Side of the Heart (1992, Eliseo Subiela) 7/10

I'm very happy to finally be able to explore Eliseo Subiela, who has been one of the looming directors of stature I had never seen anything from.

Image

Man Facing Southeast immediately impressed, though it lacked an edge/atmosphere - and felt surprisingly calm and sanitized. Essentially a soft kind of "magical realism", but with sci-fi instead of fantasy - looking at the potential of a patient in a mental asylum genuinely being an alien. It is a thoroughly well-directed effort, and played in a way we are not used to at all, but at the same time the characters never popped and lacked a bit of charisma.

Image

Last Images of the Shipwreck had exactly what the predecessor was missing, which is a much clearer visual/cinematic edge, along with far more charismatic characters. In some ways it is the same sanitized style, only amplified, with more surrealistic and/or magical realist features. The cinematography here is so interesting. It is beautiful, yet very classic. The palette is such that even when it shows neon lights in the night it never feels glossy, or dirty or raw. The character gallery, each with quirks, coupled with the plot tool of attempting to write a story about them allows for a lot of structural variety and play - while it also gives in to surrealist dreamlike/fantasy elements and completely down to earth conversation with a Jesus who has stepped down from his cross (literally) and wants to head out into the real world. There is a playfulness here where you don't know exactly what is true, coupled with genuine melancholy and contemplation of the human existence that brings the work to life.

Image

The Dark Side of the Heart was a bit of a shock to the system after the previous two entries - throwing sanitation away in favour of ugliness (though still with evocative imagery). The film follows a misogynistic poet looking for some form of love - but generally just looking disgusting and disturbed. To accompany this lost soul we now get neon colours that are genuinely dirty, bar performances that are far from sanitized and glistening ugly sweat. It is a darker, more brutal film, complete with starker visual contrasts and a completely different colour palette. Beige is gone, light grey is gone, pastel colours are out - and the replacement, beyond black, is bright and crass - yet still somewhat "muted" - just not in the same way. In the end, it does feel a little too wayward, just like its central character,- though it is also revelling in far more surreal abstractions of reality - such as showing our lead discard women into bottomless pits as opposed to breaking up with them, actively conversing with death - and even himself. It is a nice re-calibration of his style, but one that could have been more effective.

A giallo style thriller. The film's biggest plus is its visuals, with lots of attention to detail in the sets, costumes and colour grading; the whole thing could easily be mistaken for a genuine 70s giallo. There are some great grisly bits and pieces too - most notably, a young woman trapped in a prop guillotine (see above) - and the gore effects are generally solid. As a narrative though, the film is far less successful and the male protagonist is downright dull.

4. El rey del Once/The Tenth Man (2016) * 81 min. (Argentina)
A New Yorker returns to the Jewish neighborhood of Buenos Aires to introduce his fiancee to his father, who runs a neighborhood charitable organization, but nothing goes as planned. An easygoing comedy that explores issues of family, religion and community, with a little romance.

5. Soy Rada: Serendipity (2021) * 69 min. (Argentina)
Although I think it was funnier than Agustín Aristarán: Soy Rada at times, the songs weren't generally funny and were too frequent and too long. Could have used more magic.

2. Alelí (2019) * 88 min. (Uruguay)
3. Agustín Aristarán: Soy Rada (2018) * 60 min. (Argentina)

3. La Historia Oficial (1985, Argentina)
A post-Proceso movie about a woman who realizes the child she adopted was stolen from one of the desaparecidos. If it has its melodramatic touches, it never feels anything less than totally authentic in its depiction of the victims, the survivors, and the enablers of the junta. The only thing that baffles me is the decision to layer the sounds of a background arcade game over the soundtrack during the most emotional scene.

4. 4x4 (2019, Argentina)
A single location thriller that starts promisingly with an interesting premise. Unfortunately, it runs out of ideas and momentum after half an hour.

Like the directors' Good Manners, this is similarly not a horror film for the most part - and the supernatural side is the film's weakest aspect. There are mysterious black oozing liquid stains, vanishing supplies and something in the wall, but nothing is ever made clear. The filmmakers do not really build up an atmosphere of dread or terror either. Where the film succeeds the most is in depicting the husband's disenchantment with finding employment.

Down Argentine Way

1. La muerte camina en la lluvia / Death Walks in the Rain (Carlos Hugo Christensen, 1948) ARGENTINA
2. La trampa / The Trap (Carlos Hugo Christensen, 1949) ARGENTINA
3. Apenas un delincuente / Hardly a Criminal (Hugo Fregonese, 1949) ARGENTINA
4. Si muero antes de despertar / If I Should Die Before I Wake (Carlos Hugo Christensen, 1952) ARGENTINA
5. No abras nunca esa puerta / Never Open That Door (Carlos Hugo Christensen, 1952) ARGENTINA

Two more from Christensen, I suppose the ace of crime in Argentine cinema in this period, or certainly one of them, both based on Cornell Woolrich stories. Si muero... is a kid-focused noir, not generally my favorite thing, but it's a pretty decent one. In this case an adolescent boy who keeps getting in trouble has a hard time convincing his teachers, or his very strict and temperamental cop dad that he knows something about the disappearances of a couple of girls from his school, who end up as the prey of a serial killer. Good chase sequences and atmosphere, a solid enough film that just didn't quite hit all it's marks for me in the end.

No abras... on the other hand is more interesting and rather unusual in that it consists of two stories, the first occupying the first third of the film and the second, the rest. The first sequence, about a man trying to revenge himself for the death of his sister over gambling debts, is solid enough, but it's the second and longer story that is pretty close to a knockout; an old blind woman lives with her niece, and receives a letter from her son, who she hasn't seen for many years, promising a visit. She has high hopes for him, but we soon learn that he is not the man she thought he would turn out to be as we witness his part in a jewelry story robbery and murder. When the old woman gradually starts to understand what's going on - one of the themes here is clearly that she is not taken seriously because she's old and blind, but she's obviously the smartest and most rational person in the story - she has to decide whether to shelter her son, or allow justice to take it's place. Ilde Pirovano is phenomenal as Rosa, the sad but ultimately strong-willed blind mother, and Roberto Escalada makes a fine psycho criminal.

5. Bad Day to Go Fishing (2009, Uruguay)
A leisurely dramedy about an aging wrestler and strongman and his hustling manager who travel around small towns and put on shows in order to scrape by. It had some great elements, but it didn't add up to much.

6. 7 Boxes (2012, Paraguay)
A decent but forgettable police action crime caper set in an Asuncion marketplace.

7. 7 Prisoners (2021, Brazil)
An excellent drama about modern slavery in Sao Paulo. Terrific acting and a simple but strong script made everything feel very genuine.
