48. The Girl with All the Gifts (Mike R. Carey, 2014)
From the writer of such lauded comics as Lucifer and Hellbazer comes this post-apocalyptic zombie tale that does something most zombie stories don't: make you actually care about the characters, even some of the ones who out of the gate seem incredibly unlikable. It posits a future where much of humanity has been taken over by a deadly spore virus, rendering them mindless zombies, that is, with the exception of humans at military outposts studying the infected and roving survivalists, called junkers, who seem to take a very nihilistic view of things. What makes this book somewhat unique though is the third kind of creature, children who have been infected with the spores but are still able to maintain coherent thought (unless they catch a whiff of the overt human smell). The story follows one of these "gifted" children, named Melanie, as she travels with a teacher she idolized from the compound she was imprisoned in along with a hard-nosed sergeant, a rookie private and a sociopathic researcher who wants to slice 'n' dice Melanie's brain at the earliest convenience.
Some may be familiar with this story via its film adaptation. Interestingly, this holds the fairly unique distinction of being written concurrently with the screenplay to the film, also written by Carey. As far as plot points go, they stick pretty close to another aside from the ending but the book gets a leg up by doing a better job at nuanced characterization, jumping back and forth between the points of view of each of the five characters on the move and fleshing them out much more than the film version does. The book also goes into a lot more detail on the science of what happened for those interested in that aspect of it. Overall, this was a solid read that's recommended for fans of post-nuke and zombie fiction as well as those looking for a more character-driven survival narrative.

I've finished The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories and, to be honest, I wasn't a fan of the book. Carter was clearly intelligent and well-read, but I found her writing style unappealing, and it was a challenge for me to get past this and mine any deeper meaning from this collection. The book is made up of ten stories, starting with The Bloody Chamber, which very quickly fell into a repetitive soup of excessive descriptions, puffery, run-on sentences and one or two five dollar words or historical references that seemed forcibly inserted by an insecure writer trying to prove themself to the reader. Each paragraph read more or less the same to me and, stripping away the purple prose, I found the story itself to be thin and uninteresting. She mentions the Decadents and Symbolists in the first story, and it's clear she's trying to emulate them, but give me Huysmans, Nerval or Gautier any day, they do it far better.

The germs of these stories are taken from fairy tales, and they distinguish themselves by turning these traditional tales on their head. For example, critics tend to focus on the elements of feminism, and to be sure the stories all have these overtones which. The content is indeed bold, considering these stories were released in the 70s, I just wished I wasn't so distracted by the writing style to be able to appreciate it more. Unfortunately I don't think I'd give Carter a second try unless I had my arm twisted. I'm running out of time this weekend so I'll leave it at that.

49. Experimental Film (Gemma Files, 2015)
Folk horror is baked in celluloid in this surprisingly detailed dive into the world of Canadian filmmaking. Our narrator discovers what seems to be clips made by the first Canadian female filmmaker, ethereal experimental footage of a towering goddess made real, buried in a hack ripoff artist's latest short film. This leads her down a path into the historical of Canadian film and the pagan beliefs that spurned it on.
I appreciated this one, if for nothing else, for its many allusions to filmmaking and film history, and it's particularly enlightening on the Canadian film industry and how it generally functions oddly enough. As a horror novel, it certainly has moments of great interest with the mystery of Mrs. Whitcomb, the early filmmaker of the strange unearthed short films, her back story, why she made the films and what is being depicted in them. What I wasn't too keen on was the style in which the story is told, mostly in a massive series of exposition dumps that the narrator even apologizes for up front. It more often than not violates the 'show not tell' axiom of compelling narrative by rather than describing the bizarre events as they occur, she essentially recounts what happened based on post-event testimony via other witnesses or footage recorded. It just made the book feel longer than it should be. Overall it was still pretty decent and interesting at times but seems like it could've been told more efficiently.

50. I Am Legend (Richard Matheson, 1954)
I don't know why it has taken me so long to get around to reading this one. I'm generally quite a fan of Matheson's short stories but for whatever reason haven't actually read any of his novels. I felt it was about damn time to get into this highly influential sci-fi/horror story of a dying world and the one man left trying to make sense of it. While the film versions tend to latch on to the aspects of the story emphasizing the lead character's isolation and survival in the wake of a deadly virus that has killed or mutated most of the world's population. What hasn't really been emphasized much at all but which is a central part of this mostly interior narrative is that it also serves as a deconstruction of the vampire myth. Matheson systematically takes each of the hoary old tropes of the vampire story introduced over the years and provides logical well-argued reasoning for why they exist. From the source of the vampires themselves and why they crave blood and cannot be harmed by regular guns to why they die in sunlight, are repelled by garlic and can be killed with wooden stakes to the chest. Oddly the first adaptation of this book, The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price, hews the most closely to the source material (which isn't surprising given the screenplay was co-written by Matheson himself). But even that version makes some curious choices like casting Vincent Price in the lead. As much as I love Price, he just wasn't a good fit for that role. It also changes the ending and has an overall cheap look and feel that just doesn't do justice to the possibilities of what a proper adaptation of I Am Legend could look like. Don't even get me started on The Omega Man or Will Smith's shenanigans.
To cut to the chase, this is an excellent novel with a great pacing and a spare but compelling prose style that makes reading this one an absolute joy. Highly recommended if you are like me and have slept on one of the greats of horror literature.

51. Beloved (Toni Morrison, 1987)
Previous to Beloved, I had only read one Toni Morrison novel, Jazz. That book was a lyrically twisting historical slice-of-life narrative written to mimic the free flowing nature of jazz itself. Beloved has that same lyical quality but in service of a much darker, more grim story. The words tumble and confuse as the narrative shifts between past and present. Sethe is a woman with a tortured history, living as a slave in the South and in the reconstruction era has now settled into her mother-in-law's old place, haunted by the ghost of Sethe's infant. When Paul D., a more figurative ghost from the past shows up and starts to insinuate himself into the household while a mysterious young lady shows up one day knowing personal things about Sethe that she shouldn't, it kickstarts a sequence of events that leads to Sethe's unraveling, forced to confront the demons of her past. At times Beloved it certainly a powerful book and while it does contain ghosts, the real horrors are of the more depraved human kind in depicting the kind of lives slaves were forced to live in, lives filled with savage beatings, rape and other examples of rampant mistreatment. When it does finally show all its cards and reveal what really happened in Sethe's past, it isn't unfathomable to see what brought her to that point. Having said that, I will say that this was not an easy book to read. Filled to the brim with local dialects both in dialogue and interstitial narrative as well as parts of the novel structured almost as loose verse poetry at times, I found myself reading and re-reading certain passages to ensure I grasped the full meaning of what was being described. While this does add to the authenticity in feel, it also serves to hamper the actual forward thrust of the narrative to an extent. Yes, this won the Pulitzer Prize for literature and is across the board critically acclaimed. But do I think it's a perfect book? No. Despite that, I can certainly see why it is so... beloved (heh...couldn't resist).

52. The Collected Ghost Stories (E. F. Benson, 1895-1934)
**Note: This book actually includes all of the stories found in Benson's The Horror Horn, the book in the Jones & New Best 100 Horror list, plus about 400 more pages worth.
E. F. Benson is often over-shadowed by the more celebrated British master of ghost stories M.R.James (who I'll be exploring in more detail later) and while not every story in this mammoth collection is great, Benson is an obviously talented writer who can conjure up some truly creepy imagery. Many of Benson's stories involve staunch "bachelors" being regaled with tales of terror in an upcountry estate, men's club or some other austere meeting place before said narrator experiencing the supernatural thing itself. Quite a few of the stories here fall into this bucket, giving the collection a little bit of a same-y feel at times. Although that makes the more unique stories stand out even more. In addition to the more typical ghost stories (of which his most well-known may be "The Bus Conductor" which was filmed as part of the classic British horror anthology Dead of Night), he has tackled stories of vampires like "Mrs. Amworth" and the often collected "The Room in the Tower" which also features another reoccurring preoccupation of his, that of premonitions. In fact, in a handful of stories like "In the Tube", "Bagnell Terrace" and "Corstophine" he has broken down premonitions in a sort of crude form of string theory, explaining them as a way of viewing time in a non-linear fashion. He also occasionally took a more light-hearted or comedic approach to the supernatural in stories like "The Psychical Mallards", "Mr. Tilly's Séance" and "Spinach". And actually one of the best stories in this collection "Pirates" combines the light-hearted fun of some of these with that skewed perception of time mentioned previously to create a wistful piece of nostalgia that feels like a precursor to some of the stories of Ray Bradbury and Twilight zone episodes like "Kick the Can". One thing I appreciated about Benson was that while he did indeed come across as stuffy at times, he also wasn't afraid to get grisly or gross occasionally as in stories like "Caterpillars" and "The Sanctuary", another two of the of the better stories here. Overall this collection is packed full of decent to great stories but I would suggest reading them over a long period of time to avoid them feeling too repetitive at times.

53. The Lesser Dead (Christopher Buehlman, 2014)
For this one, I checked out the audiobook narrated by the author himself. Normally author-read audiobooks are a mixed bag. I mean, these guys are writers, not actors. But damn, Buehlman impressed me across the board. Not only is his writing rich, well-paced, dark and witty but he seems to have a knack for different voices and accents making the audiobook version of this an absolute treat to listen to. The book itself tells the story of an enclave of vampires living in the abandoned tunnels of the New York subway system in the 1970s, narrated by a younger vampire who was turned in the 1930s. The comparison to The Great Gatsby on the book jacket is an appropriate one here as the first half of the book puts quite a lot of emphasis building these characters, giving us snapshots into their lives but hinting at some darker internal sorrow and looming dread. Their whole society is upended when they come across a group of vampiric children who seem to be unable to control their impulses which leads to a series of events that threatens to destroy their fragile subterranean society.
This book really worked for me. The narrator Joey Peacock was a really fun character to live in the headspace of Buehlman does a great job populating his world with an odd and interesting assortment of characters, both vampiric and not. At first there were some plot holes and logic that bugged me but Buehlman very cleverly had a way of tying it all together in the end. Some may feel cheated in a way but I think that'll differ from person to person. This is one of the better books I've consumed in this Best Horror run. Highly recommended.

54. Our Lady of Darkness (Fritz Leiber, 1977)
It begins when Franz Western, a noted author and scholar of classic supernatural horror fiction, espies from his window a strange dancing figure dancing in the distance. When he goes to investigate, he looks back at his apartment and discovers the odd brown figure waving back at him from inside. This strange event coupled with his recent acquisition in a drunken stupor of two old and rare books, one on the topic of Megapolisomancy and another mysterious journal believed to be written by noted weird fiction writer Ashton Clark Smith, leads him down a bizarre path into black magic and paramentals who embody the evil of the city itself.
This is a hard book to get a proper hold on. It is chock full of minutiae both in highly detailed descriptions of the city of San Francisco and in the near constant barrage of references to classic horror and genre fiction writers woven into the narrative. While he references the likes of Jack London, Ambrose Bierce, H.P. Lovecraft, Dashiell Hammett and others, M.R. James may loom largest in spirit with significant aspects of the story being allusions to some of James' works (and there are probably more than I'm aware since I've only read a few James stories) including the climax which seems to be a direct reference to "Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad". At times all these various references are kinda neat in the same way Gemma Files' Experimental Film referenced the Canadian film industry. The problem is that it really drags down the narrative and saps the tension from the tale. Having said that, the previous referenced climax was actually pretty good but it felt almost like too little, too late. Leiber is an interesting writer but this one just seemed to lack focus.

55. The Killer Inside Me (Jim Thompson, 1952)
The way people see Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford as a corny, cheerful and likable enough dope dating a sweet schoolteacher, well, they ain't seein' the real Lou Ford. Lou has the sickness. It's been quiet for a long time but when he gets mixed up with a whore on the edge of town, he commits a vicious double murder that awakens his inner killer. And he just has to keep killing to cover it all up.
This was a pretty damn good hard-boiled crime story mixed with a compelling character study of a psychopath. It's easy to look at this as a kind of precursor to American Psycho with how it contrasts Lou's innocent-seeming outer veneer with his inner monster. It's an easy read too. I read most of it in one day. Thompson's prose is clean and economical and does a great job of really getting into Lou's headspace, showing that he isn't quite the happy-go-lucky dullard that everyone thinks he is. He also makes some interesting decisions to intentionally obfuscate certain plot elements which helps create a more impactful third act. Plus Lou himself is genuinely a character you don't mind spending time with. He seems as much a victim of his own impulses as the people he kills.
As an interesting little thought experiment, I also watched the two film adaptations after finishing the book to see how well they captured Lou Ford. The first one was the 1976 version directed by erstwhile western director Burt Kennedy and starring a young Stacy Keach as Ford. Keach does a solid enough job in the role but the film feels overly rushed, especially in its final third where it comes up with a more traditional New Hollywood ending. The second version was the 2010 film directed by arthouse provocateur director Michael Winterbottom and starring Casey Affleck as Ford. Interesting casting decision in retrospect given the controversy around Affleck's treatment of women coming out in recent years. Affleck definitely has that innocent boyish look that helps sell the small town charm that Lou exudes naturally. The film also adds some voiceover narration occasionally in the film to help set the tone of Lou's duality. In general, this version is much more faithful to the original novel and is the better of the two. The problem is that so much of the book is so internal it still doesn't quite capture Lou fully.
The final verdict on this one? The Killer Inside Me is damn fine, yes sir.

56. Dark Forces (Edited by Kirby Macauley, 1980)
Here we have one of the big seminal anthologies of '80s horror with heavy hitter mainstays like Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, Charles L. Grant, Robert Bloch, Theodore Sturgeon and Robert Aikman as well as others. Even more interesting is the inclusion of some literary titans like Isaac Bashevis Singer and Joyce Carol Oates as well as writers who, while they've dipped into the horror well on occasion, are more known for their fantasy and/or sci-fi work like Ray Bradbury, Joe Halderman, Clifford D. Simak and Gene Wolfe. There are even stories from cartoonists like Edward Gorey and Gahan Wilson. As one would expect from such a diverse collection of authors, the stories are incredibly varied in tone but still with a pretty consistent quality of decent to great.
Much ink has been spent on King's well-known novella "The Mist", making it's first appearance here. Suffice it to say, it's one of King's better shorter works and a fun rollercoaster of a story. Acting as the other big anchor, "Children of the Kingdom" by notoriously non-prolific author of The Ceremonies (which I will be getting too sooner or later in this whole thing) T.E.D. Klein is a very well-done, bizarre story of slipping creeping things in the dark in the city during a massive blackout. Other ones that stand out include Ramsey Campbell's creepy and strange "The Brood", Karl Edward Wagner's slightly-too-long but still quite good kudzu monster story "When the Summer Ends", Lisa Tuttle's odd, eerie folk horror of "When the Stones Grow" and the unsettling "Garden of Blackred Roses" from Charles L. Grant. Honestly two of the weakest stories are from the two of the biggest names. Isaac Bashevis Singer's "The Enemy" just felt somewhat slight and completely devoid of suspense. Also "The Bingo Master" from Joyce Carol Oates falls in the same bucket. It's really not even remotely horror. Having said that, it is a quite well-done character piece like much of Oates' work. It just doesn't fit in with much of this collection. Overall, if you're looking for a consistently solid collection of stories from masters of '80s horror, this should whet your whistle for a while.
