At least My Love is a rewarding, emotional experience.
What exactly is the reasoning behind Year in the Abandoned Road's high position? I notice people demean Brakhage shorts, but this one seems EXTREMELY popular for years now. Yeah, OK, it's fine and all, but top 100, or, even worse, top 50??? What gives???
I believe somewhere - maybe in this thread, maybe last year's, I don't know or care to search - it was suggested that Monty aggressively pushed it years ago. And thus it came to be, as Monty is our forum's Jesus. Or maybe it's just awesome if you're doing shrooms, I dunno.
Monty was definitely the first to push it, and I think Armo too was early on it? I used the film for the first (?) World Cup so blame us I guess...

Although I guess you could call it conventional, to me it has a similar magic to Kurt Kren's structural film 31/75 Asyl in terms of how it deals with time and seasons...
It was used in the second world cup, and I think the film might have already been in the <400 list by then; I can't remember.

I wouldn't say Monty aggressively pushed it. People promote films on here all the time... that's part of the purpose of the forum, no? Personally, I found the film mesmerizing: the HD restoration is stunningly beautiful, and the soundtrack suited the film perfectly for me. I was enthralled the whole time. Obviously, some people here were not as enthralled, but I don't see the need to trash the film every year when it comes up in this countdown.

It's like people have different opinions. Amazing.
Right. So we blindly accept whichever film's position and aren't allowed to utter our disapproval on what we think is subjectively questionable.
Perhaps we should silently observe the countdown too? Ah, now I get it. We're sipping our cups of tea and simply rooting for films we like, anything else defies logic :folded: (and, I believe, savoir vivre too)
You're complaining multiple times about a film that hasn't even showed up in the countdown yet. What's the point of that?

No please, go on complaining. I agree, and the thread is indeed more lively with you around.

Someone saw it, liked it, recommended it on the forum. And then some of the people that watched it also liked it. Enough to put it in their list. Then it got on the official list, and then I guess more people saw it, and even more voted for it. That's how these lists work. The more voters, the higher on the list the movie appears.
As for My love, I haven't seen it. But A Year Along the Abandoned Road was, for me a rewarding and emotional experience. So that's why it ended up in my list. I can't speak for the others.

Agreed. I had a new #1 last year because my previous one went over 400. My #2 last year and this will go over 400 before next year's edition; another film in my top 20 almost certainly will, and a few others in my top 50-100 probably will. That's a bit of changing right there without my trying.

And y'know these are all films with a relatively low number of checks, they are films that with few exceptions only a minority of even us hard-core forumites have bothered to see. So why not keep promoting our very favorites until enough people have seen them to pop them over the limit? I do think it'd be nice if there were a *little* more turnover, but I don't think the onus should be on having people replace top favorites with lesser favorites, rather the site needs more users, something that is out of the hands of must of us plebs.

Hm, I think I'm talking about diversity in the rankings. I understand everyone has different perceptions when it comes to ranking (or not), but what I'm saying has to do with promotion. Sure, it's unfortunate that some, few, many (numbers don't make any difference) didn't make the 400 check-cut, so the immediate response to that situation is, what, to continually promote similar films in high (and not so high) positions, even after 2, 4, 12 years (matter of speaking) have passed and haven't managed to reach our precious 400th goal? :whistling:

If, say, 20 of my favorite films kept appearing for 3 years in a row in similar positions like the first time they entered the list, I'd be giving a second look to my list rankings
I know, it's all about list priorities, just throwing my two cents here, don't mind me... :ICM:

I've already "complained" about Go West and Roar's appearance, you must have missed those parties, nice try in attempting to backfire my argument B) I've also "complained" about films I like being present for an insane number of years (usually, again, in high positions), so there's that too :woot:

I change my rankings for movies from time to time. I evolve and change, and so does my relation to the movies I watch. Nothing wrong with that. I don’t think I’ve ever moved a movie so drastically as from #3 to #182, but I have moved movies 10-20-30 places, both up and down.

re: Rankings
Strictly speaking, one's individual ordering isn't that important anyhow - the biggest impact is caused by voter turnover. You can actually witness certain films getting into the list because certain people shared their nominations this time, often to the detriment of other titles (besides 5-10% changed inventory because of >400). There's a row of core titles of our list which are hard to get rid off from the Top 50 or Top 100 since they "belong" to pretty active forum users I guess.
Overall, the reveal and results stay exciting because of different participants. (Despite the fact that some titles are way too long tehe )

I, for one, do enjoy the relative stability of this list, thanks to the consistency of my fellow ICMers. I usually watch between 20 and 30 movies from this list every year, as availability isn't that easy for many of them, as well as my own.
So that even though I see many recommendations here that I am enclined to follow, it will usually take me between 3 and 5 years to actually watch some of the recommended movies. I'm glad to see the same titles appearing here, which means the poll was not a one-time thing, but a consistant and true proof of the collective appreciation of these films. I haven't seen Doa al karawan, jakten or the Incident yet, but I am pretty certain I will enjoy watching these, whenever that should happen.

Been meaning to see this for years. It's just really long.
Honestly it's just entirely too long. Watkins did the same style of film MUCH better with The War Game. Of course that one has too many checks. Honestly, if there's a Watkins that deserves to be on here, I'd go with Privilege.
I don't think you can compare these 3 films, as they showcase 3 very different types of Watkins films - with Privilege perhaps being the least Watkins style work as, if I recall correctly (not seen it in a decade) it is one of the extremely few films not presented as a documentary.

Anyhow, The War Game is "sci-fi", a mini-documentary showcasing the "realism" of just how quickly things could go wrong. Watkins made other dystopian sci-fi films, but this, with its news coverage feel is the closest to a blueprint of mankind's destruction.

Meanwhile, La commune is something very different, that Watkins perhaps can be said to have "perfected" - i.e. the idea of cameras existing in the past and depicting past events as they were unfolding - of course with certain comedic over and/or undertones. A style/approach first seen in Culloden and continued through his career. However, La commune also flips the script by being more obviously staged and interviewing the actors as well - as such it is both about the events of the commune - as if we were there on the ground (with certain twists, such as old TVs, news coverage of the events from other sources, etc.) and the actors reflecting on the time itself. This is made even more powerful by how the actors themselves are mainly ideologically aligned/close to the communards - and reflecting on the present as well. It may be long, but it is a living, breathing and dynamic epic, with much more to say than the regular Watkins film - and while I loved Privilege and like many waited way too long to see La Commune, it might just be my favourite Watkins.

Hmmm, that more or less comes down to the same thing, but yes, I'm more or less in the same situation. As everyone know at this point I rarely watch shorts. A big part of this is tied to negative feelings about them - mainly that the artists frequently don't put in the same care, effort and/or ambition into them - and that they are either springboards to start their career or smaller exercises. This often holds up - with the obvious exception of artists who primarily/only work within shorts, where I will be more inclined to jump on their work. Very often though I find that shorts don't have the gravitas of a feature and the shorter a film is, even if it does what it does wonderfully, the less it is able to impress me.

Shorter works really need to tap into something unique, special, magical or perhaps something only available to shorts to truly shine - as otherwise they just don't have what it takes to win me over. Similarly, if a film can actually maintain my attention for 3+ hours I am often more likely to rate it higher - as it showcases how spellbinding its power is - and, at least to me, it seems that running time/ability to captivate over a longer period of time is tied to how much I love a work - putting shorts at a disadvantage.

Finally caught up to the end, so will just throw this out before the list changes.

Current stats (soon to be replaced list):

347/500

Highest unseen:

20. Welfare
24. Året gjennom Børfjord
39. O fovos
47. Ayneh
48. Dying at Grace

I don't know why I haven't seen O fovos, Ayneh and Dying at Grace in particular. I should definitely work harder on this list.

Substats:

45/50
87/100
196/250

-As for the new list in progress-

I am also really happy with the shift towards my taste this time around. I see many of my top films, especially core directors I'm pushing, such as Yoshida and Robbe-Grillet move upwards.

I don’t think I’ve ever moved a movie so drastically as from #3 to #182, but I have moved movies 10-20-30 places, both up and down.
Me too, especially in the lower regions of my list, but for personal reasons, cause after a few years a movie stayed or didn’t stay with me that much. Never for tactical reasons.

This is the part I understand, but that isn't so much about prominent promotion then and, like I said, will make a difference of only a couple of points if it's in the lower list regions.
Anyway.

Yeah, but Horse Money is the Costa film!

I've only seen two from Kawashima, this and Sun in the Last Days of the Shogunate, both at a retrospective celebrating the hundredth anniversary of Nikkatsu; but those were both very impressive, I can imagine him being a potential favorite.

Mubi did a special on Kawashima in Feb/Mar 2020, which is how I got see see and fall in love with his films - I'd only seen Suzaki previously, which I'd like, and watched Shogunate after. I think Temple of the Wild Geese is his other film with some traction on the forum, but I really liked most of those mid-to-late-1950s films of his that Mubi showcased. Sadly, it seems that a lot of his work still remains unaccessible to western audiences, without subtitles and in need of restoration.

I've really gotten into Kawashima this year, still got a couple more films to check out but I haven't seen a bad one yet.

I'd definitely recommend "Graceful Brute" and "Tales of Ginza". Former is about a family of scam artists largely filmed in one location, the other follows several different characters in the changing Ginza neighbourhood with a humorous narrator.
"Room for Let" is set in Osaka, Frankie Sakai plays another lovable jack-of-all-trades along with several other characters trying to survive in a boarding house.

The results thread could benefit from more SS-sniping in VLC, but taste is subjective and images must be representative etc. according to the buzz-killers.
