Where did you find that one? In a collection or randomly online somewhere? I love the segment in the Twilight Zone film and the episode is good too. I found the short story much darker and less goofy and gave just that extra little bit of context and 'complexity' to Anthony's character and powers and the extent of the crazy things he can do with it.

In the mood for short stories right now so I read Joyce Carol Oates' 'Where are You Going, Where Have You Been' which appears on the NPR list. I think it's a bit of a stretch to call this one horror even if it is uncomfortable and creepy. Found it a little overly talky (and it eventually made me find Arthur Friend more annoying than creepy) which kept breaking the moments of tension. When those moments work it's quite good but as a whole the thing is uneven. I thought it was fairly effective at making it obvious to the reader that something bad was going on before Connie does and you feel your heart drop as she slowly realises and can't do anything about it.

22. From Hell (Alan Moore & Eddie Campbell, 1989)
Alan Moore's large, serialized fictionalized depiction of the Whitechapel Murders of Jack the Ripper posits a far-reaching conspiracy involving the illegitimate heir of Prince Albert who commissions the royal doctor to undergo the murders with the complicity of the Freemasons. It's a dense, detail-oriented read with some very heady ideas of the Ripper's role in forging the new world of the 20th century, and the actual murders depicted are quite chilling, due in large part to Eddie Campbell's stark illustrations. Like much of what Moore writes, this is at times both frustratingly obtuse and masterful in equal measure.

Some of the books on these lists definitely stretch the definition of horror. Some are on the lists more for their influence on horror like Rebecca and Jane Eyre that I doubt anyone would actually call horror but did influence the writing style of Victorian gothic horror.mightysparks wrote: ↑September 26th, 2021, 5:45 am In the mood for short stories right now so I read Joyce Carol Oates' 'Where are You Going, Where Have You Been' which appears on the NPR list. 23. The Stranger (Albert Camus, 1942)
So I knew very little of this going into other than it has been heralded as an absurdist/existentialist masterpiece. After reading it, it struck me as much less absurdist and more deeply tragic and horrific. The main character is obviously on the autism spectrum with his inability to understand social interactions or express emotion appropriate to a given situation. As such, it makes it even more horrifying witnessing this poor guy being pulled into this whirlpool of injustice, unable to extricate himself or even understand why he finds himself in this place to begin with. Apparently this was published two years before Asperger's Syndrome was defined as a diagnosable condition, so that could explain why I think this book has been misinterpreted for so long. Doing a little digging after I finished it, it does look like in just the last five to ten years, people have been reassessing it from an autism angle which I find pretty interesting. It is a great book but perhaps not necessarily for the reasons that many seem to think.

That was definitely not my interpretation, though I can see the logic in it. But even though it's been some years since I read it, I still feel like Meursault's socio-emotional state is more a reflection of a human unreconciled to the absurd. It is only his embrace of the absurd at the end that allows him to achieve some sort of emotional breakthrough. Of course, it's possible to analyze the character as displaying both traits, autism spectrum and the anomie that comes from living in a world without inherent meaning. Interesting stuff, flavo!
Here's one article that goes into a lot more detail about it: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5903843/blocho wrote: ↑September 27th, 2021, 10:37 pmThat was definitely not my interpretation, though I can see the logic in it. 24. Melmoth the Wanderer (Robert Maturin, 1820)
Wow this was long...and felt even longer... The business leadership mogul Franklin Covey said that you should face your big rocks head on and the little ones will trickle in around them. Melmoth the Wanderer is definitely one of my "big rocks" on this horror journey at close to 600 pages and written in a somewhat archaic early Victorian prose style with endless digressions and multiple layers of nested stories. My overall impression of this book, considered by some to be the first horror novel (or at the least least an early influential gothic horror novel), is very mixed. It certainly has moments of genuine terror and thrills but they are at times buried beneath dreary asides (like the lovers tale) or spaced between tirades against the Catholic Church, which is perhaps Maturin's primary intent in writing this book. Melmoth is an ageless, twisted fiend but the Catholic Church is even worse in some ways with much of this story taking place during the Spanish Inquisition and delving into those atrocities. I'm glad I read this since it is indeed a major touchstone in horror fiction, but it isn't one I would wholly recommend for more casual readers.

25. Infidel (Pornsak Pichetshote, Aaron Campbell, 2018)
This one was a quick read but a good one. This five-issue limited comic series is about a group of multi-racial Muslim women living in an apartment complex that had previously been the site of a terror bombing and that's haunted by the twisted rage of racism. Yea, I know. It sounds heavy-handed, but for the most it really isn't. The terror and grotesqueries on display feel very visceral and real, in no small part due to the bizarre horrors of the manifestations of the bigotry drawn by Campbell that act as a countpoint to the otherwise more naturalistic, grounded illustrations for the character interactions. Certainly recommended if you like horror comics.

I read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (on NPR). Possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. I don’t know what age group this is aimed at but I can’t imagine finding this anything but utterly boring and simplistic at any age. Most stories didn’t even have endings and it just felt like a collection of words. Really dull and I hope the movie is better.

Well, it's a compilation of old folk tales and urban legends. Really the main appeal of the book that everyone remembers is the incredibly creepy illustrations, not the stories themselves as much.mightysparks wrote: ↑October 1st, 2021, 8:12 am I read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (on NPR). 26. The Terror (Dan Simmons, 2007)
Man, this was long. This is another one that I've reading on and off for a while (if you haven't noticed I tend to have about 4 or 5 books going on simultaneously due to my ADD brain). In some ways this has a similar structure to The Ruins for its first two thirds (although it veers heavily into more arcane eskimo mysticism by the end) in that it focuses not only on the monstrous force seeking to destroy the characters but also on their grim attempts at survival. The Terror does a great job of building an icy, isolating and hopeless atmosphere and the aforementioned mysticism elements I found very fascinating. The biggest issue I had with it is that I think Simmons was TOO interested in making a historical fiction in the first half of the book and not enough in making a gripping horror novel. It definitely has sections that drag, getting bogged down in nautical terminology and day-to-day operations of ship navigation. Also just the sheer number of characters made it difficult to nail down and care about all but a handful, although Simmons does a serviceable enough job of narrowing down the focus to about a dozen or so to really follow and focus on. Overall I think it's a very good book that has some flaws that could've been resolved with some editing.

27. Silver Scream (Edited by David J. Schow, 1988) *Includes the story "Night They Missed the Horror Show" by Joe R. Lansdale
This seminal anthology of the '80s featuring predominantly original stories from a veritable horror hall of fame focuses on cinema-themed horror, and, as Splatterpunk originator David J. Schow's editing presence would allude, often features stories that include excessive gore, sex and other fucked up kinds of content. The stories themselves range from decent to pretty great with few outright duds. Some of the real standouts include "Son of Celluloid" by Clive Barker, one of the few reprints in the collection from his Books of Blood, "Sinema" by Ray Garton about a messed up kid that blackmails a pedophile, Joe R. Lansdale's "Night They Missed the Horror Show", a southern fried snuff sledgehammer to the face (and the story from this tome included on NPR's Best Horror List), all capped off by Mark Arnold's "Pilgrims to the Cathedral", a gloriously over-the-top celebration of drive-in sleaze. I've yet to read a perfect horror anthology and this one is no different, but it's still a hell of a lot of fun at times and worth checking out.

I finished A Nest of Nightmares this morning (#8 in Valancourt Books' Paperbacks from Hell series), and I'll start by saying that, despite being a big fan of horror films and vintage horror (anything from its beginnings to about the 30s or 40s) I haven't read a lot of modern horror besides Stephen King (I've read a lot of his stuff), so it's hard not to read this through that lens. And the stories in this volume do have a 70s or 80s vibe to them, it's true, but there's a restraint to the stories that I wasn't really expecting in something from this era. The stories, for the most part, felt to me unfinished, which isn't a criticism, but it did take some getting used to for me. Tuttle takes the story as far as she feels is necessary, then lets the reader fill in the pieces themselves, which is a long-standing, effective technique, but I found it a little jarring in the modern horror context (this is entirely my hang-up, of course).
Tuttle's stories have a slower pace, and there's usually a backstory involving relationship difficulties that you can't help but think is tied to the horrors that await. I found that sometimes she'd dwell too long for my liking on this development, and sometimes the payoff at the end didn't seem worth all the build-up (coming off as more discomfiting than horrific), but that's my personal taste, she's a talented and uncompromising writer who's not afraid to take the time she feels is needed to tell her story. I think I would like to try one of her novels, so that she has more room to build up her world.
I'll add a little more here than what I wrote in the Read the Books thread. Tuttle focuses a fair bit on sensory stimuli. Many of the stories have passages devoted to the smells of things, for example, and (keeping in mind how closely the sense of smell is tied to memory) I think it works well considering how many of the stories involve conjuring up the past (Treading the Maze and The Horse Lord being the standouts). If I were to re-read this volume I think I would take closer note of how she plays with this and the other senses in her descriptions.
I think every one of her protagonists in this collection were women, which is refreshing. I've read that she's considered a feminist writer by some, and her characters are strong-willed and intelligent, often saddled with difficult relationships as I've mentioned. The situations they find themselves in might be considered symbolic of the struggles facing women today (particularly the first story, Bug House). I think many of the stories do this effectively (and where they didn't for me, perhaps a second reading is in order), and it's worth underscoring that these multilayered stories should be read with this subtext in mind as well.
EDIT: I did a quick run-through of the lists, will have to do a double-check later but I think this is where my count stands:

I'd definitely put The House on the Borderland on the horror side of weird fiction, and I haven't read The Night Land yet but it's very high on my list of books I want to read. I see that with the updated lists that The House on the Borderland, Carnacki and The Boats of the "Glen Carrig" are there - I approve!

28. Anna Dressed In Blood (Kendare Blake, 2011)
This novel of a teen hunting down violent ghosts, while marketed to the YA lit crowd, is surprisingly gruesome in places with graphic depictions of people being ripped in half, dismembered, etc. The storyline is also pretty interesting albeit a little predictable. I had two significant issues with it though. One was the obnoxiousness of the narrator. His constant "I'm a misanthropic loner" routine got old very quickly and it comes across as fairly emo and angsty at times (which the narrator even acknowledges...doesn't make it any less annoying though). Overall it was a decent quick read and probably a good one to get the younger audiences into horror fiction.

29. Skin Folk: Stories (Nalo Hopkinson 2001)
This one was quite interesting and very different than the type of book I normally read. Skin Folk is a bizarre, fascinating melting pot of Caribbean folklore, fantasy, sci-fi, horror and sexual frenzy used to explore themes of genre politics, racial and ethnic identity and other themes that can come across as heavy-handed if not handled properly. But Hopkinson knows what she's doing. This is one I listened to the audiobook of and based on some of the reviews I looked up after I was done, I think that may actually be the way to go. Like Cormac McCarthy, it seems that Hopkinson uses odd cadence and format in her stories which may lead to difficulty in trying to focus on the content itself. But also it just feels appropriate to HEAR these stories given that many of them are told in the tradition of folk tales passed down through generations verbally. Stories like "Tam Tam and Dry Bone" have a certain flow to them when delivered aurally that I think wouldn't work as well on the written page. Among the highlights includes "The Glass Bottle Trick", a Bluebeard-esque story involving duppies (basically a kind of Caribbean ghost), "Ganger (Ball Lightning)", a perverse sci-fi/horror story of an out-of-control sentient sex suit that ends on a touching note on the value of self-identity, a topic that "A Habit of Waste" also explores using a mild science fiction underpinning. Certainly recommended for those looking for a collection of unique genre stories that explore headier themes. Word of warning though. A couple stories in here have EXTREMELY graphic sexual content, so you know... If you're sensitive to that kind of thing, buyer beware.
