Year-by-Year Polls: Looking back at 2020 (CLOSED)

#1

Post by Rufus-T »

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll looking back at 2020. We are finally here. What a strange year 2020 was. It is time again to celebrate the movies from the previous year.

The Rules

The rule is slightly different from our usual poll. In addition to poll the films, we will include polls for the 4 acting categories (leading actor, leading actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress).

The eligible films are the following:

1) Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

2) Listed as 2020 according to IMDb

3) Listed according to IMDb prior to 2020 if the film released in 2020 in your country. These usually are 2019 films and sometimes 2018 films. If earlier than 2018 and I do not notice any 2020 release at any country, I may disqualify it unless you can justify the inclusion in your ballot. Some prefer to list only films that listed as 2020 on IMDb. That is fine too. Great thing about these polls are that they are accumulation of different opinion and taste within the rules.

4) NEW RULE: To avoid duplicate entries in the higher ranking, especially for an abnormal year of 2020 with unusually fewer films, any films that you listed in last year poll would not be allowed to be in your list again.

You may list up to 20 films for the film poll, no minimum number.

You may list up to 10 performances for each of the 4 acting categories. If you are not sure whether a performance is a leading or a supporting role, put it in the category you deem most fit. The split will consolidated later to the category with the most points follow by number of mentions and by higher ranked.

If you have an actor or actress in multiple films in your list, please list their performances for the different films at different slots since they are different performances.

Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

Regarding IMDb links, since there may be many revision for some and that the poll includes the performance categories, I relax on this rule so you do not need to include the IMDb links as usual. You may if you want to. However, if the film you listed has another film with the same name, please distinguish it by including the director or a link or some other way. Otherwise, I will choose the one with the most IMDb votes.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

The scoring for the performances is the same as films except that the scoring is for lists up to 10 slots.

You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes.

Don't worry too much if you have not seen enough films. You are still welcome to participate. The result turned out to be quite decent every year with enough participation. The poll may help you keep up to date the recent films. It helped me every year.

After this poll, we will return to our regular Year-by-Year poll with 1967, followed by 2009.

NOTE: gromit82 & I are still looking for extra help in running these polls. Anyone interested please PM gromit82 .

Thank you and happy listing, and let's generate another awesome year-end list!

Yes sir. There were several titles from 2018 ranked pretty high on the 2019 list. Such will very likely happen to 2020, so I like to avoid that.

Just missed the cut:

Despite the COVID of it all, I still managed to see about 150 current releases from the year (the number varies depending on which films count as 2019 or 2020 - ultimately not an important distinction in the long run). The amount of quality films wasn't a loss for me, so much as the absence of the theatrical experience. Of the high numbers of films seen from the year, I only managed to see about 1/3 of them on the big screen - probably less. But once awards season kicked into gear and vaccinations started happening more regularly in the US, I managed to catch up with more films on the big screen, including 7 out of the 8 Best Picture nominees from the most recent Oscars ceremony, and 11 of my current top 20 in this poll.

8/16 - First major round of edits. Non-English language titles added, and The Empty Man gets moved into the top ten after a re-watch. Horror fans, skip that at your own peril.

Ok, thanks for explaining. Apparently everyone except for me seems to know what about you're talking about. :$ :D
I don't know of any 2019 poll we had and I have been inactive on the forum before Covid, so I guess I as an individual can vote for everything. Cool.

It's complete chaos with the regional release dates; boy will we be happy when we return to a non-current year. :P

Yes, people do get caught up in the release dates, among other minute issues. The year-end poll, unlike the regular year-by-year poll, is just a gauge to where the forum is at regarding recent films. In addition, we get many recommendation in the poll result from the very knowledgeable and up-to-date film watchers. I think this post captures the spirit of the year-end poll: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5270#p682094

It is true that this year-end poll is much about the release date as the IMDb year. Basically, it is for those who follow theatrical release closely and gets a feel of the film year without looking any reference. There were several major 2019 films released in pre-COVID 2020 in my area that I would have considered 2020 films without checking. I suggest you would focus on your region only and check your local release date if any late 2019 release that you like to include in your list. That would be lot more work on your part if you choose to. The simplest is just include only IMDb 2020 films like some posters do. All up to you.

a rough draft, since everyone's doing them:

1. Tragic Jungle (Yulene Olaizola)
2. Lovers Rock (Steve McQueen)
3. There is No Evil (Mohammad Rasoulof)
4. City Hall (Frederick Wiseman)
5. Gunda (Viktor Kosakovskiy)
6. Night of the Kings (Philippe Lacôte)
7. MLK/FBI (Sam Pollard)
8. New Order (Michel Franco)
9. Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell)
10. Summer of '85 (François Ozon)

Honorable mentions:
Apples (Christos Nikou)
Beginning (Dea Kulumbegashvili)
Autoficción [sh.] (Laida Lertxundi)
A State of Madness (Leticia Tonos)
Tenet (Christopher Nolan)
Undine (Christian Petzold)
Da 5 Bloods (Spike Lee)
Mank (David Fincher)
Concrete Cowboy (Ricky Staub) (some local bias here)

some great miniseries:

Mrs. America
The Last Dance
The Haunting of Bly Manor

Tragic Jungle is on Netflix! (and that's probably why it has a sub-6.0 rating. but arthouse-loving cinephiles, particularly Apichatpong fans, should sprint towards it)

Very much interested in seeing:

The rest of Small Axe (only seen the first 2)
i'm thinking of ending things
Nomadland
Judas and the Black Messiah
Minari
One Night in Miami
Days
I Carry You With Me
Hunter Hunter
The Nest
Possessor
His House
Relic
Another Round
News of the World
Crip Camp
Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets
The Painter and the Thief

Want to see, but not sure if I have the stomach for, as they both seem devastating:

Time
The Father

A lie ain't a 'side of the story.' It's just a lie.

Not sure I have the time to rank performances but the entire CALM WITH HORSES cast impressed me - Niahm Algar won a BAFTA I think and in Cosmo Jarvis clearly a star has been born. Rosamund Pike et al from I CARE A LOT were on good form esp the new (to me)Nicholas Logan as part of the Russian Mafia clan Pike has unwittingly fleeced; Wallace Shawn & Gina Gershon made a dream team in the Woody (the most incongruous cinema couple since Elisha Cook Jr married Marie Windsor); KST had fun as Mrs Danvers although I'd give Eileen Atkins the edge over her THE HAND OF GOD from the new TALKING HEADS (great lockdown idea as it was I thought most episodes didn't quite match the originals); Betty Gilpin made a kick Ass heroine in THE HUNT (a MOST DANGEROUS GAME reboot); TWILIGHT Boy did good in that lighthouse; Robin De Jesus stole the new BOYS IN THE BAND, Imogen Poots' bit as the carer in THE FATHER impressed me far more than all Hopkins' gurning  ... But probably the performance I enjoyed the most was Hugh Grant's randy old queen in THE GENTLEMAN (although Colin Farrell's down with the kids "Yoof" worker, Eddie Marsan's unfortunate news mogul - best laugh of the year was his comeuppance - and Michelle Dockery's Essex Jewish Princess were not far behind.)

"deliberately excluded" TENET.. for being one of the worst films I have ever witnessed  :P

will post URLS soon but could i get verdict on eligibility of italicised ones before I do that Rufus? CLARIFIED THANKS will add urls CLARIFIED thanks

and I'll try to watch another 5 good ones!

2020 has, as others have pointed out, been an unusual year for cinema - and I can only presume that my list would have looked different and been even stronger if certain key releases had not been moved 2021.

That said, it is still a competitively strong year, and where bigger films were moved, this left space for a long line of smaller films to find their way through the wilderness and into the light.

My list is notable for a few things, most of all having 3 Romanian films in my top 10, all directed by men named Radu.

I will restrict myself to titles listed as 2020 for the purposes of this poll as well, especially as I only had one cinema visit pre-pandemic.

1. Uppercase Print (2020, Radu Jude)
2. Promising Young Woman (2020, Emerald Fennell)
3. Sheytan vojud nadarad / There is No Evil (2020, Mohammad Rasoulof)

I've watched a total of 147 films from 2020 as per IMDB production year. I went a bit crazy trying to find at least 5 personal favourites for the Talking Images podcast episode on our best films of 2020!

Even with that many films watched I have only managed to find 4 favourites; it seems like I'm either hard to please or there may well be a lot of under the radar films that have yet to make their mark given the pandemic. There are still a lot of very good films in that 147 though and the rest of my top 20 come with a strong recommendation.

1. Come True

2. Rent-a-Pal
3. Quo Vadis, Aida?
4. Adieu Les Cons

5. Minari
6. Butchers
7. Anything for Jackson
8. Palm Springs
9. Shiva Baby
10. Gretel & Hansel
11. Another Round
12. The Father
13. A Quiet Place Part 2
14. Slaxx
15. It Cuts Deep
16. Relic
17. Concrete Plans
18. I'm Thinking of Ending Things
19. Dinner in America
20. The Deep Ones

I'm not that attentive when it comes to individual performances so I will skip that part of the poll but will definitely be interested in seeing the results for it.

Rufus-T wrote: July 28th, 2021, 4:22 pm It is true that this year-end poll is much about the release date as the IMDb year.
Thanks for taking the time to explain, Rufus.
So, yeah, it's so messy for 2020/2021. I will add IMDb links to my list as soon as I've decided on my personal feeling of the 2020ish-ness of some of those. Ranked:

1. Soul (2020)
2. Tenet (2020)
3. Wolfwalkers (2020)
4. Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020)
5. The Father (2020)*
6. Palm Springs (2020)
7. Sound of Metal (2019)**
8. My Octopus Teacher (2020)
9. Nomadland (2020)*
10. Onward (2020)
11. Undine (2020)
12. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
13. The Invisible Man (2020)
14. Hamilton (2020)
15. Feels Good Man (2020)
16. The King of Staten Island (2020)
17. On the Rocks (2020)
18. Vivarium (2019)**
19. Swallow (2020)
20. A Sun [Yang guang pu zhao] (2019)**

*The two big Oscar films would be 2021 films in my usual logic, given their scarce availability as of late 2020, but they seem to be mighty relevant for this poll right now, so here I go.
**Technically, by IMDb standard, 2019 films, that are rather or very 2020ish.

All of the following had their German "release" in 2020, and we're always late apart from popcorn blockbusters; we were even later than regular due to Covid. I will exclude these to not look like a fool.
2020, but not
Uncut Gems (2019)
Sorry We Missed You (2019)
Knives Out (2019)
Weathering With You [Tenki no ko] (2019)
Les Misérables (2019)
Bacurau (2019)
Monos (2019)
1917 (2019)
Deerskin [Le daim] (2019)
Waves (2019)
And Then We Danced (2019)
Little Women (2019)
A Hidden Life (2019)
Corpus Christi (2019)
Children of the Sea [Kaijû no kodomo] (2019)
Finally, 4 films that are more or less 2020 releases to me. Like, who has really watched Guy's The Gentlemen (2019) in 2019?

Away (2019) -> a few festivals, but also USA in 2019, other than that a 2020 film
The Gentlemen (2019) -> see above, must be 2020 actually
The Platform [El Hoyo] (2019) -> only Spain and a handful of festivals in 2019, became big with the Netflix release
Color Out of Space (2019) -> only festivals in 2019, who of us had seen it before 2020?

And only some of the top titles of my watchlist in descending order, which could also be more or less not-2020 ..:
YET TO SEE
Druk (2020)
Minari (2020)
Riders of Justice [Retfærdighedens ryttere] (2020)
Jallikattu (2019)
Possessor (2020)
Psycho Goreman (2020)
Mandibules (2020)
Zana (2019)
The Painted Bird (2019)
The Call [Kol] (2020)
Beanpole [Dylda] (2019)
Und morgen die ganze Welt (2020)
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
J'accuse (2019)
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train [Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-Hen] (2020)

An understandably weak year for films, but actually a pretty good one for miniseries. My rankings have already shifted somewhat (since the all time poll earlier this year) as impressions settle and I watch more content, and this process will likely continue. As Rufus-T rightly pointed out in the introduction, determining eligibility for some films in this poll is pretty murky - perhaps most on point, Torgo highlights Guy Ritchie's excellent The Gentlemen, which would be extremely high on my list if it was eligible and is probably my best viewing experience compared with expectations in a long time. While there's potential for edits before the deadline, here's my current list:

1. Belgravia (BBC miniseries)
2. The Outsider (HBO miniseries)
3. The Stranger (Netflix miniseries)
4. The Invisible Man (Leigh Whannell)
5. Da 5 Bloods (Spike Lee)
6. Undine (Christian Petzold)
7. All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur (Amazon miniseries)
8. The Old Guard (Gina Prince-Blythewood)
9. The Haunting of Bly Manor (Netflix/Mike Flanagan miniseries)
10. Druk - Another Round (Thomas Vinterberg)
11. Hamilton (Thomas Kail)
12. Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell)
13. The Trip to Greece (Michael Winterbottom)
14. The Father (Florian Zeller)
15. Palm Springs (Max Barbalkow)
16. Sound of Metal (Darius Marder)
17. Ammonite (Francis Lee)
18. Nuevo Orden - New Order (Michel Franco)
19. Nomadland (Chloe Zhao)
20. Tenet (Christopher Nolan)

The acting categories are tough, in the sense that miniseries inherently give actors/writers etc. more time to develop characters. However, given the relative dearth of good films (or even mediocre films with strong performances) in 2020, it seemed necessary to include miniseries actors/actresses for this particular year. Belgravia was an especially superb example of acting across the board, featuring outstanding work by reliable veterans like Tamsin Grieg, Harriet Walter, Tom Wilkinson and Paul Ritter, and also breakthrough roles by young British actors Jack Bardoe and Ella Purnell.

Lead Actor:

1. Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round)
2. Anthony Hopkins (The Father)
3. Philip Glenister (Belgravia)
4. Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal)
5. Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton)
6. Franz Rogowski (Undine)
7. Ben Mendelsohn (The Outsider)
8. Richard Armitage (The Stranger)
9. Kevin Guthrie (The English Game)
10. Bryan Cranston (Your Honor)

Lead Actress:

1. Tamsin Greig (Belgravia)
2. Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man)
3. Paula Beer (Undine)
4. Frances McDormand (Nomadland)
5. Kate Winslet (Ammonite)
6. Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)
7. Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America)
8. Siobhan Finneran (The Stranger)
9. Jasna Đuričić (Quo Vadis, Aida)
10. Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Bly Manor)

Supporting Actor:

1. Tom Wilkinson (Belgravia)
2. Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton)
3. Jack Bardoe (Belgravia)
4. David Strathairn (Nomadland)
5. Daveed Diggs (Hamilton)
6. Paul Ritter (Belgravia)
7. Paddy Considine (The Outsider)
8. Paul Raci (Sound of Metal)
9. Isiah Whitlock Jr. (Your Honor)
10. Adam James (Belgravia)

Supporting Actress:

1. Harriet Walter (Belgravia)
2. Olivia Colman (The Father)
3. Alice Eve (Belgravia)
4. Margo Martindale (Mrs. America)
5. Ella Purnell (Belgravia)
6. Cynthia Erivo (The Outsider)
7. Saoirse Ronan (Ammonite)
8. Amanda Seyfried (Mank)
9. Elizabeth Banks (Mrs. America)
10. T'Nia Miller (The Haunting of Bly Manor)
