Best Horror Novels and Stories On-Going Discussion

#1

Post by flavo5000 »

So looking through this section of the forum, I noticed the distinct lack of challenges akin to the movie challenges in the other section. For those who aren't aware, I'm a huge horror nut, both movies and books. I thought recently it's a shame that there are massive holes in my horror novel education, so I thought I'd create this on-going challenge to fill those in. For the lists I want to attempt to complete, there are a few that stuck out as solid and encompassing which included both classic and contemporary works:
NPR Reader Poll 100 Best Horror Novels and Stories
Reedsy Discovery 100 Best Horror Books of All Time
Jones and Newman's 100 Best Horror Books
Jones and Newman's Another 100 Best Horror Books
*FYI, I'm using LibraryThing links since it's just cleaner than the source links that are more blog-structured and a little tedious to scroll though.

Without further ado, here is a list of all the titles:
On At Least Two Lists
Frankenstein Mary Shelley
The Shining Stephen King
Dracula Bram Stoker
Rebecca Daphne Du Maurier
Haunting of Hill House Shirley Jackson

Anyone into this? I dunno if anyone on here reads as much horror fiction as I do. Anyway, as I finish them, I'll be posting little mini-reviews. Also I probably won't re-read the ones I've already read just so I can prioritize the ones I haven't.

Good luck getting a challenge going! I won't be participating; I have mixed feelings about the film challenges to begin with, and I've never read with any eye to finishing books in any particular timeframe so I wouldn't even think of doing this, just doesn't work for me at all. But I will try to follow along.

Having only been into horror films very much within the last few years it's not surprising that I haven't really been a horror reader; however horror does overlap plenty with fantasy and SF, which I have read much more, and most of what I've read from these lists falls into one of those categories also. What I've already read:

Both lists: Beloved, At the Mountains of Madness

NPR list: "The Lottery", The Turn of the Screw, "The Tell-Tale Heart", "Young Goodman Brown", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream", "It's a Good Life"

Reedsy list: The Call of Cthulhu and Other Tales*, The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales*

*not sure I've read every story from these collections, but probably almost all of them.

Pretty thin. Obviously I favor older stuff and the weirdness of Lovecraft and Lovecraftian writers has appeal, but I've never devoted much time or energy. And I fail to understand how someone who watches 3-5x as many movies as I do can also read ANYTHING, but clearly I manage my time poorly compared to, well, everybody. Of the books on those lists the one that certainly stands out is Frankenstein which I intended to read in it's bicentenary year in 2018 but just never did. And Dracula is obviously in the same category of cultural importance. Beyond that - lots of books that look interesting, several that I own, but the chance of me reading any of them, ever, is...not high. I have read a couple of S. King books, and a whole bunch by Dean Koontz - very much a guilty pleasure - but none that are on those lists. I have a 1st edition of The Shining, given to me by an aunt whose favorite book it was, shortly before she was murdered by her son - I used to be creeped out by the thought of reading it but I think 30+ years later I may be over that, and that's kind of a priority too. Otherwise I'll be interested to note the weirder and perhaps surreal choices if they're pointed out.

James Herbert - Rats

Used to be a big horror novel fan, this book always stood out to me. The other work of James Herbert is pretty cool too.

There's one other book I remember from my younger days, about a little town where evil/tentacles/bugs are devouring the inhabitants. Couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called or who wrote it though :( it was pretty graphic and gruesome though.

Hm... That sounds like the kind of thing that Robert McCammon would write but it specifically doesn't sound familiar.

After I posted it, I was thinking calling it a "Challenge" maybe might not be the best thing. But I wasn't thinking about any timeframe. More along the lines of some of the unofficial challenges like Top 250 Directors or They Shoot Zombies Don't They where you are just challenging yourself to complete the list, not really competing against anyone else for a duration.

I've actually had this one recommended to me before. I think it may have been mentioned in the Paperbacks from Hell book?

I apologize for the incoherent memories, it's really been ages (more than 20 years) and not something I've ever revisited, but I also remember a very sexual angle. I think people actually died from continuous orgasms.

There's apparently a film based on the book (Deadly Eyes, which looks terrible). Not sure how famous it is, it was just a book I found at our local library. I do remember some very graphic passages, of rats gnawing themselves through conscious victims. I was always pissed they had more books by that other Herbert (the Dune guy) :D

So again, sorry for rambling on, but I think I'm talking about Tim Curran's Worm :D

Edit: guess I'm on brand, bringing up two books that aren't on the lists you posted.

Alright. I thought I'd kick this off with a couple I finished over the weekend just to get things started. And before you start, no. I don't normally read two books in a weekend. We had a garage sale so I had nothing to do but just sit and read for two days straight for like 8 hours each day (if you notice my movie watching in the challenge threads plummeted this weekend too  ).

Image
1. The Ruins (Scott Smith, 2006)
So I had seen the movie based on this book of a bunch of youthful, hard-partying tourists who get trapped on a large mound covered in colorful flowered but deadly vines so I generally knew what to expect. Overall it was a pretty decent book but I do feel conflicted about it. On one hand, it is paced really well with an interesting focus on the survival aspects of their situation the movie glossed over. On the other hand, the main characters were generally pretty damned unlikable so I didn't care about them at all.

Image
2. A Head Full of Ghosts (Paul Tremblay, 2015)
This one I really liked. It was pretty hard to put it down actually. On its surface, it's a basic possession story about a 14-year-old girl exhibiting strange behavior whose family is suffering financially and stoops to having a reality show built around her predicament. It's told from at least three different narrators at different points in time that creates an uneasy sense of what is or isn't real. Very impressive book that keeps delivering even after you think its over.

Sounds like a fun challenge! I do enjoy horror and haven't really read much, all things considered (I think I've read 27 books across the lists you've posted? I might have miscounted) but it'll be tricky to do this alongside the Read the Books thread, so I'm not sure I can join in. I'll give it some thought, though!

No William Hope Hodgson on any of the lists? Shocking!!

I actually don’t read a lot of horror but I may jump into this every now and then. I’m only just halfway through the NPR Sci-fi and fantasy list and I’ve been working on that since the mid 2000s lol.

Seconded! Though the two novels that I've read, The House on the Borderland and The Night Land, probably don't qualify primarily as horror. Can't remember which short stories I've read, just 2 or 3 of those I think.

Finally had a chance to look at the lists.. I've read 17 on the NPR list and 10 on the Reedsy list. Surprised at how many I'd never heard of. I generally prefer to read sci-fi and have never cared much for horror literature (even if I pretty much only consumed Goosebumps as a kid and my favourite book is horror). But maybe it's just that I haven't read enough.

I have read on NPR: Frankenstein (rubbish), The Shining, Dracula, The Handmaid's Tale, The Haunting of Hill House, The Lottery, The Yellow Wallpaper, Lord of the Flies, Sandman (the first volume), World War Z, The Exorcist, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Great God Pan, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Goosebumps (1-62 and many more lol), House of Leaves (rubbish), John Dies at the End.

And Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Road from the Reedsy list.

I have read 38 from the first list and 32 on the second. To be honest I don't think much of either list: they seem to start with a smattering of classics and then become a list of recent popular horror. It feels like a book equivalent of the All-time Worldwide Box Office lists.

Two horror book lists which did really impress me were:
Horror: The 100 Best Books
Horror: Another 100 Best Books
At some point in my life I hope to have read all of these 200. (I've read 27 from the first list and 21 from the second)

As I am already a member of a horror book club and a Stephen King book club, I have my plate full with horror books at the moment, but I'd love to know other's opinions on these.

Yea, I actually considered including those too (and I might still add them if I have the time). I just figured that my weakest spots were on more contemporary horror so I wanted to find a couple of lists that did have a large chunk of those.

I went ahead and added the two Jones & Newman lists to the OP just because they are good lists and I thought it'd be good to round out with more classic horror novels.

If anyone is into audiobooks, many of the older public domain titles can be found on podcast streams as well like Loyal Books and The Great Stories with Trev Downey. I personally don't listen to audiobooks a whole lot but I do work them in occasionally, especially if they're free like these.

3. Coraline (Neil Gaiman, 2002) 4/5
Lists: NPR & Reedsy
This was a quick read given it was target to the YA crowd, but Neil Gaiman is a damned good writer and creates a delightful and genuinely creepy world seen through the eyes of a curious girl who gets more than she bargained for when she goes through a mysterious door in the back of her flat. I had seen the movie already and the film is actually slavishly faithful to the book. Coraline would make for a great introduction to horror for kids (much better than any Goosebumps book I've read).

4. Horrorstör (Grady Hendrix, 2014) 4/5
The premise here is basically a cynical comedic take on haunted retail. It follows a group of employees of Orsk, an Ikea knock-off, as they stay overnight in the store to figure out what's been causing some weird stuff to show up in the Showroom floor lately. The book does a solid job of starting as a retail comedy not unlike the TV series Superstore while slowly morphing into a genuinely creepy at times haunted house-type story. It's very briskly paced, especially in the second half and is generally a lot of fun to read. Also an additional shout out to the graphic design of the book, tailored to look like a furniture catalog that slow starts to reflect the situation the characters find themselves in.

5. The Jewel of the Seven Stars (Bram Stoker, 1903)
List: Jones & Newman's 100 Horror Books
Despite the popularity of the Universal monster The Mummy, I haven't really come across many horror novels based on Egyptology, so I was cautiously optimistic about this one despite me being unimpressed with Stoker's Dracula. Unfortunately, Stoker, like Lovecraft, is better with ideas than with execution. While the book retains some interest in the first half with the mystery of what's ailing Trelawney and why he left such oddly specific instructions, pretty much all suspense and mystery is dashed to the rocks as the second half gets increasingly more and more bogged down with stifling and endless dry exposition. The climax in the finale chapter isn't bad but feels like too little too late.

A couple of shorter ones before tackling a longer one...

Image
6. "The Yellow Wallpaper" (Charlotte Perkins Gilman, 1892)
List: NPR
I was actually quite impressed with this interesting psychological horror story given the time period it was released. It felt much more recent than 1892 and is clearly a precursor to works like Polanski's Repulsion.

Image
7. Doctor Faustus (Christopher Marlowe, 1604)
List: Jones & Newman
I was somewhat dreading this due to my general dislike of Shakespeare (Marlowe is often rumored to have penned some of Shakespeare's works) but despite the more archaic dialogue, I actually quite liked it. Certainly containing more horror elements than I expected with dismemberments and the rather graphic ending, the thing that caught me most surprise was by its humor. I legitimately laughed out loud more than once at some of the wry, sarcastic dialogue, particularly from Faustus himself.

8. Red Dragon (Thomas Harris, 1981)
List: Jones/Newman
This is one that has been on my backlog for a long time just out of sheer notoriety. Hannibal Lecter is easily one of the most recognizable fictional serial killers in literary and film history, so I felt obligated to read this one. So what's the verdict? Eh... After having seen three different adaptations in film/TV, the impact of the story itself has been somewhat lessened. Additionally, and I think the Hannibal TV series really brought this out more than either film adaptation, Will Graham is the most interesting character here, and the book abandons Will for large chunks in the second half. I think Harris wants Dolarhyde to be interesting but honestly he just isn't, and the book suffers. While I'm glad to have finally gotten around to finishing this one, it certainly isn't a book I'll return to any time soon whereas the Hannibal TV series remains a masterclass in serial killer fiction.

9. Twice-Told Tales (Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1837)
List: Jones/Newman
Twice-Told Tales is a very diverse collection of stories, only some of which would slot into horror or even genre fiction at all. At its best, the book channels a puritanical fervor and religious zealotry in service of delivering a kind of creeping funereal gloom as in "The Minister's Black Veil" (probably the best story in the collection), "Lady Eleanor's Mantle", "The White Old Maid" and "The Wedding-Knell". It also features tales of light fantasy such as "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" (the only story from this book actually adapted for the Hawthorne anthology film Twice Told Tales) and in a way "Visions of a Fountain" that while interesting feels too slight and anti-climactic to be of lasting interest. Many of his stories are allegorical in nature with a strong moralizing tone such as in "The Great Carbuncle" and The Ambitious Guest" (with its bleakly ironic ending). The biggest downfall of the book in my opinion is the frequent slice-of-life stories that seem to do little but describe the day-to-day from a particular vantage point with no real narrative thrust to them ("A Rill from the Town-Pump", "Sights from a Steeple", "The Toll-Gatherer's Day", "Foot-prints on the Sea-shore", etc. While ethnographers may find these of interest, they do little for me but induce tedium. Overall, I certainly would not recommend the book as a whole for fans of horror fiction as there is far too little here, but there are probably a handful of stories I may recommend as mentioned above.

If I am going to challenge myself with any kind of reading it would be on the Nouveau Roman (have got quite a collection of Duras, Robbe-Grillet, Blanchot, Sarraute, Butor etc still to go through!), but I can give two tips in the horror genre (not something I am extensively read in, although I used to devour cheap pulp horror novel/series of German origin that used to be available over here in Dutch translations... professor Zamorra, John Sinclair... very "cool" stuff that I feel nobody beyond my generation even knows about...)

S.P. Somtow's - Moon Dance
Whitley Strieber's - the Wild

The only two horror novels, maybe next to Clive Barker's (shorter) The Hellbound Heart that have really stayed with me

I have Strieber's Communion and Wolfen to read on my list. I'll add The Wild as well. Moon Dance looks interesting too.

Has anyone ever tried Thomas Ligotti? I started reading one of his collections once, and I found the first story so disturbing that I couldn't continue.

I've read a graphic novel adaptation of his book The Nightmare Factory that was interesting but haven't actually read any of his novels yet.

10. "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" (Harlan Ellison, 1967)
List: NPR
I might have read this a VERY long time ago but I didn't remember it, so I thought it was time to tackle it again. In short, this potently bleak story is a masterclass in short fiction. I generally like Ellison's writing which usually has a very off-kilter style regardless of the genre he's writing in, and "I Have No Mouth..." is one of his absolute best. Strongly recommended, and after checking this out I also suggest his Deathbird Stories collection as well as the video game of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream which lives up to the story quite admirably for the most part.

11. Penpal (Dathan Auerbach, 2012)
List: NPR
So I'm not the biggest fan of creepypasta. It seems like you have to wade through a ton of really awful ones to find a couple of even decently creepy ones. Why bother when there are so many actual horror classics out there I haven't read? Anyway, Penpal had its origins as a creepypasta-esque series of Reddit posts, and it shows. The book is a sequence of recollections, dolled out non-chronologically about the narrator's childhood with a strong focus on his friendship with a boy named Josh and a mysterious set of circumstances that happened throughout his youth which culminates in an extremely bleak and depressing finale. The book overall isn't bad and was generally paced pretty well making for an easy read. It also generated a couple of genuinely creepy sections. My main issue with it though is the writing style which feels annoyingly over-written at times, very much what I'd expect from a story that had its origins on the internet. It's use of past-perfect tense also irked me for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. Plus it makes the common mistake of giving children dialogue and thoughts far too mature compared to how children actually talk (especially in the sections when the narrator is six). I will say, if you do actively enjoy creepypasta, this is certainly an above average example of it with some genuinely disturbing moments.

I reread I Have No Mouth recently and it really is an amazing piece of writing. I haven’t read anything else by Ellison so I might give that story collection a shot.

Widdershins seems most often brought up for the inclusion of the novella "The Beckoning Fair One", Oliver Onions' ghostly tale of obsession, and it is a deserved reputation. This particular story in this collection is one of the better ghost stories of Victorian period English literature I've read. While the rest of the stories in the collection I would say aren't quite up to the same standard, there are some solid works here. Onions' characters are haunted in seemingly ambiguous ways. In many stories, including "The Beckoning Fair One", it can be hard to delineate between the supernatural and the mad. From the unseen spirit tormenting the titular character in Rooum, an 18th century ship in "Phantas" or an all-consuming masterwork in "Benlian", his characters see their lives drained away by the mysterious and ethereal. It even includes a couple of non-supernatural stories "The Accident" and "Hic Jacet" where the characters are still haunted but more by the past and their own inadequacies. "Hic Jacet" in particular was quite good, about a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle-esque writer of popular detective fiction who wrestles with his own self-respect as he attempts to pen a fitting biography of his recently deceased friend, an artist with the utmost of integrity. The content of the stories were frequently interesting, but having said that, I will say like other works of Victorian literature, the writing style can be difficult to stay engaged with without proper focus. Oliver Onions is a very meticulous and dense writer of florid prose that may be out of reach of modern audiences at times. Still, I think "The Beckoning Fair One" in particular is worth reading for fans of horror fiction.
