iCM Forum's Favourite Japanese Movies : 2021 Edition

iCM Forum's Favourite Japanese Movies : 2021 edition

:Crtiticker: Nominations topic :Crtiticker:

The cinema of Japan has a history that spans more than 100 years and is one of the oldest and largest film industries in the world. Films have been produced in Japan since 1897, when the first foreign cameramen arrived.

Japanese cinema got it all, Samurai, yakuza & Kaiju of course... but it's so much more than that.

Just when the Japan Challenge is near it's end, let's see what are iCM Forums Favourite Japanese Movies anf if we can discover some new directors who could rise and stand between our beloved Ozu, Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Kobayashi etc etc.....

This is the third edition of that pool, precedents one where held in 2013 & 2017. So it is about time to do this again.

Quoting the 2017 ruleset :
I'm not going to set rules for which movies are admissible. If you feel a movie is Japanese (and good enough of course to include in your list) than you should include it. When in doubt about a movie, you can ask here for advice. But to give some guidelines as to what to search for: you can look at production country, language and/or the nationality of the director/crew.

The deadline is 30th June 2021 : I will download all lists the morning after deadline, so feel free to submit an incomplete list and keep editing your list until the deadline.

Rules :
1) Make a list of your favorite films (Films include feature length films, short films, documentaries, mini-series, whatever has an entry on IMDB, except TV series no video games either.).
You can submit a list in one of three ways:
1. Imdb list
2. ICM list
3. List of imdb urls if you can't make an imdb list.
Make sure your (imdb/icm) list is public!

2) There is no maximum number of films, but each film on your list must only be listed once. Your list should have at least 10 films in it.

3) Submit a link to your IMDB/ICM list here, by midnight CET June 30, 2021. I will download all lists the morning after deadline, so feel free to submit an incomplete list and keep editing your list until the deadline.

4) I will assume your list is RANKED unless you specify otherwise.
Other than a ranked list you can submit your list in one of the following ways:
- Unranked: All films get the same number of points (Pts are determined by the length of your list, same amount of total points as if the list had been ranked).
- Partially ranked: Top X is ranked, rest is unranked

List length and half-life will probably be respectively 200 and 30, since that was used in the 2 previous editions of this poll.

Keep in mind that the popular 13-episodes "mini"-series format of Japanese animes should and will be excluded for this.
There are enough amazing movies to choose from. -_-

Will participate the first time since almost a decade, yay!

Maybe we should clarify beforehand if Lain, Paranoia Agent, Tatami et al are eligible or not.

From the 2017 full list : Lain got on the 200 List because of 2 (??) #1 Vote.

We'll see if it pops up again this year... not sure Anime's Mini Series have grown up in audience since then.
IMDB sorting out oubvious "TV Series" should be enought.

Don't worry. You don't have to wait for one poll to finish to start the next. It's fine like this.

Thought about removing the lesser known films (because they have no chance of making it anyway), but meh. They're great films too, so they belong in my list.

Definitely always include them. The most valuable part of the forum polls for me is going through the lower-ranked films on the list of all nominations that got 3 or fewer votes and finding new things to watch. 98% of the films that make the final list on any given poll are things I've seen or that are already on my radar.

have seen maybe only 2 or 3 movies in the meantime that come close to cracking this top 50, but nothing that I must definitely include...

Well fuck me, I really haven't updated my old list since the 2013 poll. :ermm: Since I don't keep review logs, it's close to meaningless to try sorting a bunch of 8/10 rated b/w Samurai films from the 60s which I've seen in 2014 or 2015 ..

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls051160268/ (ranked)

Yes the title is "Top 100" and includes 154 films as of now, just ignore that. ;) If anyone is giving this a look: 1-114 is my old list, 115-154 what I seen from 2013-2016 (+a few animes). Maybe I will sit down until June 30th and clean it up .. maybe I'm too lazy. TIME WILL TELL.
