He made some interesting live action films, but it's very different from his animated work. But even his live action films are very hard to compare. I've got a movie-quiz going on tonight, so it's going to be another slow start on the challenge for me. But I like the bonus challenge idea and would already like to present my pick for it:

My favorite (of what I've seen) from Balabanov. He made a few hardhitting movies, coming from the wave of "black cinema" that got made in Russia from the early 90's onward in reaction to years of censorship, combined with the econical state of the country. This one has an edge to it for sure, but with strong (color) cinematography it is not all just doom and gloom. I don't see many people on this forum checking out this kind of cinema, but I'm sure some here would really love it, so all I am saying is give this one a change

1. Black Is... Black Ain't (1994)



Marlon Riggs reflects on the black experience in America in this fascinating documentary that examines shifting notions and changing ideas over time. Especially fascinating is learning about how earlier on black folks took offence at the term "black" and insisted on being called "coloured". Also intriguing is a look into language bias and preconceptions about talking jive versus the King's English and so on. Less engaging are the deflections into cooking.

Oh yea, I forgot he did Shin Godzilla which I have seen. That one actually felt like something Anno would do though. Pretty odd take on Godzilla but I liked it.

Yeah, though I felt it was pretty in line with most other Japanese 90s/00s Godzilla films. I think Kitamura's one stood out more

Final Wars was a hell of a lot of fun. Some people complain that some of the Godzilla movies are too slow in places with not enough monster fights. For those people, I suggest Final Wars.

Haha, so true. For Final Wars though, the common complaint seems to be the "MTV-style" editing. I watched it again last year and though I feared it would bomb, I was really surprised at how alive it still felt.

I understand this won't be a movie for everyone but I think more people need to see it. An emotional rollercoaster from one of my more favourite foreign directors.

I'll probably post a handful of watches at the end of the month. Focusing more on Middle East this month, but there are a number of cross-overs and a few other DTC noms I've got my eye on.

@AB537 since Waterloo Bridge is at the end of the alphabet, it's highly likely that you'll be able to watch it on May 1st and still have time to submit your rating as a write-in ballot, since Ángel always reveals the results alphabetically.

Ratings are my personal rating out of 10, and then my likely DTC rating out of 6.
Films in bold I'll most definitely rate 4, 5, or 6 and really hope they make the list. Films in italics I'm less sure about and will probably get a 2 or 3.

And for the Bonus Game, my pick is Zero Patience (1993), one of my nominations and my favourite film that I saw last year. I gave it 8.8/10. The only films I rated higher were Hannah Gadsby's standup special Douglas (2020) (9.2) and two shorts: Turn It Around (2017) (8.6) and Nursery Rhymes (2018) (8.8) (the latter of which I nominated as well). Zero Patience is definitely not a film I think everyone will like, but I firmly believe it deserves a wider audience and I thought it was simply fantastic.

2. Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979) [aka 'Head over Heels']



For someone who pretty much acts like a stalker throughout, John Heard is remarkably sympathetic in the lead role here, allowing us to feel his heartbreak as his crush tells him that she would rather stay married to someone who loves her less passionately than he does. Tone-wise this is a weird movie though and his on/off talking to the camera is strange too, but Heard gets so into his character (his street vendor interactions especially stand out) that this works.

1. Donovan's Reef (1963)
A threadbare plot means that this is little more than John Wayne and friends hanging around some Pacific islands. Also, because this is a John Wayne move, there are two brawls in which no one gets even slightly hurt. These are apparently supposed to hilarious. Visited by a stranger at her overseas villa who claims to be her brother, a young woman has trouble convincing anyone that he is a fraud in this intriguing noir. We gradually come to question the protagonist's sanity, and the whole thing is incredibly enthralling as the motives of the possible-brother very slowly emerge. The film looks sensational too with Erwin Hiller emphasising every shadow while generally filming from angles that aptly seem a little off.

I don't know who nominated it, but given that it is my first 6/6 film that I have watched for this challenge, I will promote Chase a Crooked Shadow for the Bonus Challenge Game. I assume I can't claim a bonus challenge point for having just watched it myself. Or can I?

A melodrama set in Georgia circa 1910. William Lundigan does well as a young minister, very genuine in his concerns for the spiritual welfare of his flock and not easily deterred. Most of the film though comes from the perspective of Susan Hayward as his wife who is less effective. She has one almost great scene in which she uses metaphors to tell off a flirtatious young woman, but this turns into formulaic squawking as she then openly tells her to go away.

Alright, I'll join the exploration party too, several of the nominees were already on my watchlist anyway, and will start with a few Anglo classics. As for the bonus game, I will pick one of my last year's two holdovers: En la selva no hay estrellas (Robles Godoy, 1967).



1. CASH ON DEMAND (Lawrence, 1961) — A good unadorned Hammer Christmas heist that puts both the banker and robber in the same bag (a pleasure for many to see, I presume) after teaching the former, much along the lines of Mr. Scrooge, a lesson to his merciless obsession with efficiency and self-proclaimed idea of moral dignity, it will appeal to fans of the Cushing/Morell duo and those who enjoy films that take place entirely in a single indoor set. 7/10



2. BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE (Boetticher, 1958) — An interesting and promising political setting at the beginning (USA border town owned by a corrupt family that runs into trouble with a Mexican pro-revolutionary honourable family) turns into a sort of more or less plain chase and deception game, not disappointing after all, because everything is skilful and concise, just like all the other four Boetticher’s westerns I’ve seen so far, and besides, Randolph Scott is becoming slowly one of my favourite cowboys. 7/10
