Doubling the Canon 2021 Update - Phase II: Ratings

#1

Post by Angel Glez »

Welcome to our annual update.

What is this?
Begun in 2007, Doubling the Canon is a yearly project which aims to expand the Film Canon as crafted by the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? website.

Who can participate?
Anyone can join. Requirement for newbies: Please note that you will be requested to identify yourself, just to make sure that the poll is answered (only once) by cinephiles of good will.

Where?
In this thread.
In the SCFZ thread: https://scfzforum.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=681
Via e-mail: doublingthecanon@hotmail.com

What is new in this update?
New Canon: TSPDT's 2,000 Greatest Films + 21st Century’s 1,000 Most Acclaimed Films.
New formula to calculate our top rated films: A Bayesian estimate instead of the former 'Adjustment for Popularity'.
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2016 entries.

2020 update:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4790

Phase I: Nominations for titles not on either the TSPDT lists or the Doubling list.
Deadline: March 20.
Each participant can nominate a maximum of 12 films. Shorts, TV-movies, and TV mini-series are eligible. Every nominated movie goes onto the roster as a nominee. Films released in 2020-21 aren't allowed this year for our exercise.
Along with a list of the titles, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films.
Please, don't edit your post! To change your ballot (undesirable) or add new titles you have to write a new reply.

Phase II: Ratings.
You're invited to rate the films you have seen (whether you have participated in the phase I or not). The nominees with the highest ratings make it into our list.
You can cast your votes anytime between now and Monday, April 26. Only 'write-in' updates will be accepted after the deadline.
Please, sign your ballot. Example: This is Angel Glez.

Rating system: 0-6 (3.90 was the cutoff last year)

Procedure 1: Just download the ballot (if you prefer I can send you the file) and email it back to me (doublingthecanon@hotmail.com)
DDL: https://we.tl/t-4UpUvGPf5h
Procedure 2: Online (PM me for details)

Don't remove anything, don't reorder. Untouched ballot with ratings, please.

After submitting your ballot, post a reply here to make sure I received the file. You can also add comments or statistics if you wish.

Early ballots would be appreciated. Then, if you watch new films or forgot to rate some, send me a 'write-in' ballot.

Thank you in advance for joining us in this game.

P.S.: If you know anyone adventurous enough (on or off the forum) that you think would also enjoy participating, feel free to invite them as well.

Give assistance to the host to get extra nominations!

- By making a imdb list of all ineligible titles.
- By providing a Imdb search link of eligible titles.
- By making a imdb list of all nominated titles so far.
- By making a friendly ballot in excel (original title, english title, year, director, clickable imdb link)
- General help.

The Four Feathers (1939)
Mind=blown. I don't know if you've posted this one all these years and I've just missed it, or what, but this is one of those titles I just assumed was on TSP (and a whole bunch of other lists for that matter) - it's something I first saw at least 25 years ago, have always loved, and was loved by a lot of my RL friends decades ago. And I just assumed it was generally beloved for whatever reason, and never bothered to look at it, icm-wise, until just now - only 1 list (Criterion). Wow. You know me, I always get my list in late and I doubt this year will be different, I haven't even started thinking about it - but assuming nobody else picks this, you will get help from me in this case.

Deadline: March 20.
Just want to confirm that you'll be accepting write-in votes until April 30 (or later) to coincide with the Official Challenge for DTC nominees that we are running in April.

Thanks as usual for doing this, even if I'm not a fan of the reduction from 15 to 12 nominations (yes, I know that I was outvoted on that front).

Submitted by me... in 2008. And it made the list! Ah, the CFB, those were the good times.

Yeah I wasn't doing DTC then - not sure I'd actually posted at all on the CFB by 2008.

Sure. I see no problem with that.

I promise you extra nominations if the ballot does not reach 1000 titles. :P

Nice to see this thread go live for one of my favourite features on this forum (and the project that drew me to ICM in the first place, courtesy of the referral on TSPDT itself). I'll definitely be submitting a list but am not prepared to do so yet.

One procedural question: is there a plan to address the larger than usual number of vacancies in the list, given that TSPDT 1001-2000 is ineligible for the first time? I forget the exact number but probably at least 200-300 titles on the current list would be removed as a result of this change, many of which wouldn't have been up for a revote this year.

This was discussed in another thread (I forget which one), and I believe the impact is that the list will be only 1000 titles instead of 1250. But, Ángel didn't mention it in the OP, so perhaps he can clarify.
Angel Glez wrote: February 23rd, 2021, 11:40 am What is new in this update?
New Canon: TSPDT's 2,000 Greatest Films + 21st Century’s 1,000 Most Acclaimed Films.
New formula to calculate our top rated films: A Bayesian estimate instead of the former 'Adjustment for Popularity'.
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2016 entries.
Also, Ángel, could you reconfirm which films are auto-nominated? The 21st C dropoffs, Top 2000 dropoffs, 2016 revotes, and 2020 holdovers, correct?

And I know we're not in the voting phase yet, but could you post here explaining the new formula? I don't understand it, and didn't realize it was going to change.

I don't mind making this, but like every year I really don't know how to collect all ineligible titles. Some are easy, but where do I find a list of holdovers?

And what about movies at the bottom of the current DtC-list which will drop off because the list is shortened?

1. Respire (2014, Mélanie Laurent)
2. Mean Creek (2004, Jacob Aaron Estes)
3. La tortue rouge (2016, Michael Dudok de Wit)
4. Shiki-Jitsu (2000, Hideaki Anno)
5. Utøya 22. juli (2018, Erik Poppe)
6. Hwal (2005, Ki-duk Kim)
7. Home (2016, Fien Troch)
8. Another Earth (2011, Mike Cahill)
9. Le passé (2013, Asghar Farhadi)
10. Captain Fantastic (2016, Matt Ross)
11. The Spectacular Now (2013, James Ponsoldt)
12. Skate Kitchen (2018, Crystal Moselle)

Aside of Home which I want to promote more, I chose unofficial films which have a chance of appearing (even though I doubt it). There were a few other contendors... but I see them unlikely to gain traction (Sono's Cold Fish, Europa Report, The Guest, Crimson Peak, Ex Drummer ...) or they're already permanently official and I don't see the point in nominating them.

Something like that. The new Bayesian rating formula will have something to say too, but right now I have no idea how things will turn out.

Going to assume the answer to this is yes since it seems it was the case last year.

1. Motherless Brooklyn (Edward Norton, 2019)
2. Hôhokekyo tonari no Yamada-kun / My Neighbors the Yamadas (Isao Takahata, 1999)
3. 8 femmes / 8 Women (François Ozon, 2002)
4. Foxtrot (Samuel Maoz, 2017)
5. A Vida Invisivel / Invisible Life (Karim Aïnouz, 2019)
6. First Man (Damien Chazelle, 2018)
7. Her Smell (Alex Ross Perry, 2018)
8. Plaire, aimer et courir vite / Sorry Angel (Christophe Honoré, 2018)
9. Won't You Be My Neighbor? (Morgan Neville, 2018)
10. Atomic Blonde (David Leitch, 2017)
11. Makala (Emmanuel Gras, 2017)
12. Moana (Ron Clements, John Musker & Don Hall, 2016)

I don't mind making this, but like every year I really don't know how to collect all ineligible titles. Some are easy, but where do I find a list of holdovers?
TSPDT Top 2000 dropoffs are not automatic nominations this year because they were eligible last time. 21st Century dropoffs, 2016 class and 2020 holdovers, that's all.

2016 class: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4790&start=720#p640060
Holdovers: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4790&start=800#p640298
72aicm made a icm list with TSPDT 1001-2000 titles already removed: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/dtc+2021/72aicm/

I know very little about the matter myself. Basically we are going to use a Bayesian formula IMDb-like to get the average rating. mjf posted somewhere several variants to choose from.

Automatic nominations for next year. Do you agree?

I would say, why not now, but of course you don't know yet which movies will drop off. So yeah, good idea.

About helping. Sorry, but I'm already getting a headache of all the info in basic text format instead of well sorted spreadsheet with IMDb urls.

Idiot me didn't check properly before and South is actually a revote from 2016 this year. Therefore I need to pick a different pick for my #10 spot.

10. Mes séances de lutte (2013)

- By making a imdb list of all ineligible titles.
- By providing a Imdb search link of eligible titles.
- By making a imdb list of all nominated titles so far.
- By making a friendly ballot in excel (original title, english title, year, director, clickable imdb link)
- General help.
Is someone doing a nominated titles list so far? If not i would start one tomorrow.
