Welcome to our annual update.

What is this?
Begun in 2007, Doubling the Canon is a yearly project which aims to expand the Film Canon as crafted by the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? website.

Who can participate?
Anyone can join. Requirement for newbies: Please note that you will be requested to identify yourself, just to make sure that the poll is answered (only once) by cinephiles of good will.

What is new in this update?
New Canon: TSPDT's 2,000 Greatest Films + 21st Century’s 1,000 Most Acclaimed Films.
New formula to calculate our top rated films: A Bayesian estimate instead of the former 'Adjustment for Popularity'.
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2016 entries.

Phase I: Nominations for titles not on either the TSPDT lists or the Doubling list.
Deadline: March 20.
Each participant can nominate a maximum of 12 films. Shorts, TV-movies, and TV mini-series are eligible. Every nominated movie goes onto the roster as a nominee. Films released in 2020-21 aren't allowed this year for our exercise.
Along with a list of the titles, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films.
Please, don't edit your post! To change your ballot (undesirable) or add new titles you have to write a new reply.

Phase II: Ratings.
You're invited to rate the films you have seen (whether you have participated in the phase I or not). The nominees with the highest ratings make it into our list.
You can cast your votes anytime between now and Monday, April 26. Only 'write-in' updates will be accepted after the deadline.
Please, sign your ballot. Example: This is Angel Glez.

Rating system: 0-6 (3.90 was the cutoff last year)

Mind=blown. I don't know if you've posted this one all these years and I've just missed it, or what, but this is one of those titles I just assumed was on TSP (and a whole bunch of other lists for that matter) - it's something I first saw at least 25 years ago, have always loved, and was loved by a lot of my RL friends decades ago. And I just assumed it was generally beloved for whatever reason, and never bothered to look at it, icm-wise, until just now - only 1 list (Criterion). Wow. You know me, I always get my list in late and I doubt this year will be different, I haven't even started thinking about it - but assuming nobody else picks this, you will get help from me in this case.

One procedural question: is there a plan to address the larger than usual number of vacancies in the list, given that TSPDT 1001-2000 is ineligible for the first time? I forget the exact number but probably at least 200-300 titles on the current list would be removed as a result of this change, many of which wouldn't have been up for a revote this year.

This was discussed in another thread (I forget which one), and I believe the impact is that the list will be only 1000 titles instead of 1250. But, Ángel didn't mention it in the OP, so perhaps he can clarify.

Also, Ángel, could you reconfirm which films are auto-nominated? The 21st C dropoffs, Top 2000 dropoffs, 2016 revotes, and 2020 holdovers, correct?

And I know we're not in the voting phase yet, but could you post here explaining the new formula? I don't understand it, and didn't realize it was going to change.

I don't mind making this, but like every year I really don't know how to collect all ineligible titles. Some are easy, but where do I find a list of holdovers?

And what about movies at the bottom of the current DtC-list which will drop off because the list is shortened?

Something like that. The new Bayesian rating formula will have something to say too, but right now I have no idea how things will turn out.

What is new in this update?
New Canon: TSPDT's 2,000 Greatest Films + 21st Century’s 1,000 Most Acclaimed Films.
New formula to calculate our top rated films: A Bayesian estimate instead of the former 'Adjustment for Popularity'.
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2016 entries.

Also, Ángel, could you reconfirm which films are auto-nominated? The 21st C dropoffs, Top 2000 dropoffs, 2016 revotes, and 2020 holdovers, correct?

I don't mind making this, but like every year I really don't know how to collect all ineligible titles. Some are easy, but where do I find a list of holdovers?

TSPDT Top 2000 dropoffs are not automatic nominations this year because they were eligible last time. 21st Century dropoffs, 2016 class and 2020 holdovers, that's all.

I know very little about the matter myself. Basically we are going to use a Bayesian formula IMDb-like to get the average rating. mjf posted somewhere several variants to choose from.
