I am not surprised by UK/US dominance but I didn't expect it to be so overwhelming. I counted four exceptions... I thought more Japanese animes would make it and some European too: no (old) love for Derrick, Tatort and other German police flicks ? any (newer) fan of French spy series The Bureau ?

Yeah I expected to see more anime in particular, knowing that there are a lot of fans here. Didn't contribute much in that line myself cuz I haven't seen much but thought others would. As to non US/UK or anime, speaking as an American that stuff used to be very hard to come by - finding some old German or Mexican or French TV series, subbed, forget it. And even in the digital world today where some of that stuff is on Netflix or Prime or Hulu or whatever, it's a huge sea of things and how do you pick what to watch? And how many people are going to pick the same things and like them? US stuff is just omnipresent, it's there, and if I like it I don't have to work hard to access it. I'd like to start watching a little more foreign TV but in reality I'm much more likely to make the effort to watch foreign features or maybe the occasional miniseries. And I suspect my experience is fairly typical, for Americans/Canadians at least.

I voted for The Simpsons, around the middle rankings of my list, but with its super high placement it looks like it's still coasting on the greatness of its first 8 seasons or so, haha.

Same here - I had it at #16 out of 40. But I've seen very little past season, I don't know, 10? 12? Not sure when I stopped watching regularly. So it's nearly all positive memories for me - no idea how much I would change my ranking if I'd kept up with it. But this brings up an interesting notion - I think most people would not rate a movie very highly if they liked the first 1/3 a lot but really didn't like the rest of the film. I don't think everybody ranking The Simpsons or other long-running shows that have generally been perceived as being quite inconsistent, or lower quality in later seasons, is in love with every episode. Game of Thrones was also mentioned in this context and it did well. I guess people are fairly forgiving of TV shows that aren't great, or maybe even good, throughout, as long as there as just xx number of good episodes or seasons.

Yeah, I kept up with The Simpsons for a few seasons after its prime, up until around 2002-03, and I guess some of those late mediocre reasons rubbed off on me a bit, otherwise I would probably have The Simpsons as a top 10 show. Looking back, I was admittedly inconsistent when ranking my list when weighing between: "Should I evaluate the show on its overall run (or however much I've seen of it), keeping in mind any weaker seasons?" or "Should I evaluate/rank it based on its best seasons/its 'highest heights' as a show?" I honestly think I did more of the latter, so maybe I low-balled The Simpsons a little bit.

I recalculated the results with toromash list. There are mostly minor shift in rankings. The biggest shifts are:

Hannibal (Bryan Fuller, 2013 - 2015) is now at #59 instead of 73
The Office (Greg Daniels, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, 2005 - 2013) is now at #40 instead 51
True Detective (Nic Pizzolatto, 2014 - ) is now at #36 instead of 43.
The Leftovers (Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta, 2014 - 2017) is now at #33 instead of 41

It also means Atlanta (Donald Glover, 2016-) entered the Top 100 at #92. And Fleabag dropped off.

15/100 shows enough that I felt I could vote on them (if they were good enough); in a long-running series that's usually somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 seen, or more

that'd be a pretty darn low total for a movie poll for me

I've checked 73/100

But I'm pretty lax with checking tv series, if I have seen enough to judge it I check it. F.e. I don't know if I've seen every last episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I did follow it, but in those days pre-streaming and playback options life sometimes got in the way of seeing an episode of a series. And I'm certain I didn't see every last episode of the Daily Show, but I've seen enough to like it.

I forgot about Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. Haven't seen as much British comedy as some others here, but those are both gems. And this poll did provide other ideas, several of which are readily available on Prime (at least in Canada).

Too bad Fleabag - another excellent British comedy - was the victim of the extra list, but only fair to incorporate every ballot.

18/100 for me, and like joachimt I only check a show on ICM if I've seen every single episode. So I don't have Arrested Development checked because I haven't gotten around to the latest season, even though I've watched the first 3 seasons probably 5 times.

lol @that drop of House of Cards, though. The final season without Spacey might have hurt the ranking as much that all earlier ones were with him ..

I really debated whether to put House of Cards on my list at all, given how poor the last few seasons were. I decided it still gets in on the strength of the first two seasons, but I would tell everyone just to stop there if they're watching for the first time--really no point in going beyond the end of S2.

Someone has to disrupt the status quo

I've seen 52/100 (a couple I haven't watched entirely, but have seen enough.. I'm not as strict with TV checks as film checks). 154/1102 of the 'full list'. I watched a lot of TV as a teen, but have only just started to dabble in it again over the last couple of years. I find it much harder to find anything that really grabs me these days. Seinfeld is the highest one I haven't seen because I can't get through more than 2 minutes of it and what I've seen I do not find at all funny. Not sure I'll ever be able to watch that one. Voted for 7 of the top 10 though and I think out of all polls this one has the highest percentage of my votes (35/52 are favourites!). A few here that I've been wanting to check out, but I still have so much on my watchlist...

Took me a while to get to like Seinfeld. Certainly humor is as subjective as anything but that show seems even more so than most to me. I mean, I have an uncle - 85, very conservative, has lived his whole life in rural Wisconsin, will not eat any ethnic food whatsoever, has never been to New York, thinks it's all full of sodomites - but he fucking loves the show, it's his favorite thing next to (American) football. The particular kind of humor, the delivery, the way they use music, is quite distinctive and it was totally off-putting to me at first; not sure what made me change my mind about it actually, it's one of those I find hard to analyze.

On my list: The Adventures of Lano & Woodley, Thank God You're Here, Micallef Programme, Micallef Tonight, Crash Palace. Most were things I watched as a kid, but I never really got into Aussie.. anything. Aussie comedy is usually terrible, but these ones I found hilarious.

I’ll be giving Seinfeld another try at some point. I watched about half of the first season about ten years and didn’t enjoy it very much. But since then I’ve watched through Curb Your Enthusiasm and really started to get Larry David’s sense of humor and writing style. Plus the whole season with the Seinfeld reunion on Curv was just hysterical, and I haven’t even seen the original show to compare it to. So yeah, I’m looking forward to giving Seinfeld another try.

I've only seen one Aussie show, Rake, entirely due to availability on Netflix in Canada, and it made my top 10.

I've been told by a couple of people that my love for Seinfeld is because I'm a New Yorker and the show has a particular type of New York humor. I think it's a valid point. On the other hand, it was the most popular show in the country for a few years.

Almost every TV show gets worse as it goes along. While a TV show may improve from season 1 to 2 or season 2 to 3, by the time season 5 or 8 or 11 come around, it's usually on a downward trajectory. So here's my question: How did a show's decline affect your voting?

I've realized that I completely ignored it for some shows. Twin Peaks is good enough that I'm not holding the second half of season 2 against it. And it helps that I haven't seen the most recent 21 seasons of The Simpsons. On the other hand, I probably would have included The Office and House in my list if I had stopped watching each one after three or four seasons. But by watching one or two seasons more, I not only saw some bad TV but I also came to recognize some of the significant flaws in earlier seasons.
