Best-of lists for every type of art

#1

Post by mjf314 » June 21st, 2020, 3:24 pm

In the past I made a film lists spreadsheet, where I keep track of film and TV lists.

Now I've made an art lists spreadsheet.

I included every art form for which I was able to find a list, except film and TV. I included genre lists, country lists, and century lists, but not decade or yearly lists.

I included 3 types of lists:
  • Polls
  • Top-rated
  • Aggregate (lists based on many lists)
I did not include lists that are based on only one person's opinion.
For websites with many user-created polls (e.g. Goodreads, Ranker), I only included one or two lists per art form.

If you know of any lists that I missed, please post them!
(even if it doesn't meet my criteria, feel free to post any art list that you think is interesting)

Thanks. I already had their book list, but I didn't notice the other sections of the website.

I just added the lists for albums, album covers, comics, manga, plays, poetry collections, and video games. They also have genre lists, but I didn't add them.

Thanks. I added the Virtosu Art list. I see that they also have an abstract art list, so I added that one as well. https://www.virtosuart.com/blog/famous- ... -paintings

The other lists look interesting, but seem to be made by only 1 person, so I didn't add them.

I also have these 2 lists in the spreadsheet, in case you missed them:
https://beckchris.wordpress.com/visual- ... ical-list/
https://rodcorp.typepad.com/rodcorp/200 ... st_in.html

I also just added this Ranker list: https://www.ranker.com/list/famous-cont ... /reference

Some aggregate lists (most of these mention their sources, so you can also look at those for more potential additions)

Crime novels

This website might have more aggregate lists, but it's hard to search. Here are the ones I know of

Thanks. I already had both Filibuster and Tanookisite in my spreadsheet. I'll browse the other websites to see what I can add.

I'm confused when I see Tetris rank so high on some of these lists. I don't think anyone has ever told me that Tetris is their favorite game. Is it a case of "everyone likes it but no one loves it"?

that list is pretty funny. 10 of the 20 greatest abstract paintings are Virtosu paintings... on a website that sells Virtosu paintings... who woulda guessed?

@funkybusiness: I didn't notice that. I removed the abstract art list from my spreadsheet. I'll keep the list of artists, because he only takes up 1 of 30 spots, even if he might be ranked higher than he deserves (he's #4, but he's the only artist in the top 10 who doesn't have a Wikipedia article).

@Armoreska: Do you know of any good automobile lists, where the automobiles are ranked by artistic quality (as opposed to how well they drive)?

Edit: I found a few automobile lists made by one person, but I haven't found any polls.
https://theculturetrip.com/europe/unite ... y-artists/
http://www.theartwolf.com/articles/10-m ... l-cars.htm

I also found this list of the "coolest cars" on Ranker, but I'm not sure if I should count it as an art list.

this sounds like art is the dominant criterium but not sure, perhaps it's just analyzing from art view the general list

I think there are too many of these lists to add all of them, so I put a Google search link on my spreadsheet.

@frbrown: I added the lists that you posted, as well as the lists from the sources that meet my criteria.

It's possible that I might have missed a few, because I didn't look at all of the lists very carefully (I skipped the ones that sounded they were made by 1 person).

I found this list of the top 200 artists since 2000: https://artscenetoday.com/artist_resour ... 0-artists/

I also found a book, "Human Accomplishment" by Charles Murray, which ranks people in different categories, based on how often they appear in history books. There are lists for painters, authors, composers, philosophers, and several types of scientists.

Some of the lists are on this page (but this isn't all of them): http://www.eoht.info/page/Murray+4000

I just found this list:

https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/201 ... -the-world
BBC Culture's The 100 stories that shaped the world
Voted by 108 experts from 35 countries.

I'm surprised that none of the aggregate lists used this list. Maybe it's because it's not only based on quality, but also on influence.

Edit: I found some more classical music lists and theatre lists (all based on polls).

Classical music:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_1 ... inal_(ABC)
https://www.classical-music.com/feature ... -all-time/
https://www.classical-music.com/feature ... -all-time/

Theatre:

https://britishtheatre.com/greatest-sho ... how-tunes/
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... time-20566

I think I added some other lists as well, but I don't remember which ones.

It's not a poll so I didn't add it to my spreadsheet, but I just found this:

https://www.csmonitor.com/2000/0519/p12s1.html
"Four curators share their Top 10 picks and reasoning behind the most influential visual artworks of the past 1,000 years."

Best tarot cards: http://blog.littleredtarot.com/your-top ... rot-cards/

I found this list by accident while searching for something else.

I don't know anything about tarot cards, and I didn't know that people rank them, but it's a poll and seems to be ranked by beauty, so I guess it belongs on my spreadsheet.
