:circle: :circle: :circle: Welcome to the June 2020 TSPDT challenge! :circle: :circle: :circle:

Goal
Watch as many movies as you can from the TSPDT lists below!

Rules
- Each feature film (over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- 60 minutes of short films count as one entry.
- The miniseries rule applies (episodes over 40 mins count as one entry, otherwise add episodes up to 60 minutes to count as one entry).
- Rewatches are allowed.
- Post regularly if you hit top 5.

For new watches, please make a new post; don't edit an older one. Thank you!

Thank you to shugs for providing last year's thread, which I shamelessly copied.

Official Lists
TSPDT's 1,000 Greatest Films
TSPDT's 1,000 Greatest Films: 1001-2000
TSPDT's 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films

No bonus challenge, but I'll be tracking which list gathers the most entries (among other stuff). Let's see which list lands on top at the end of the month.

Have fun and happy watching!

I'm in, obviously. No excuse this time for not finishing the main list (996/1001), which I'll be focusing on first. I'll see from there then.

Only "Diary" left to see on the main list, but 142 left on 1001-2000 and 226 left on 21st C.

I'm in! 109 films to watch on the main list. (I'm hunting for the platinum on it before the end of the year.) I have 27 films to see on top 800, which just might be a nice goal for me during this challenge. Let's see!

Thanks to Traveller for hosting!

It starts! First in. Love these public holidays. :D

1. Strangers When We Meet (1960) TSPDT #958

Image

Kirk Douglas and Kim Novak turn in surprisingly down-to-earth performances here considering that the film that they are in feels like an overlong soap opera episode; the movie is also lusciously shot by Charles Lang with rich colours and lots of shadows (see above). Still, it is hard to get on the same wavelength as the characters since their romance results from sheer boredom and seemingly little more; Brief Encounter this is not. Annoying son too.

I'll be in. I've got 63 movies left in the main TSPDT list that I'd like to make a dent in. Although I've got some really long ones like Hitler, As I Was Moving Ahead and 1900 still unwatched...

I'm in, too !
It's been a while since my last participation in a challenge, so it will probably be just for a few movies. I have a lot to watch on the main TSPDT list ! Like Flavo, I also have very long movies to watch including the mini-serie Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Let's enjoy this challenge and many thanks to Traveller for hosting this :D

01. Zama (2017) - 5/10
I enjoyed Lucrecia Martel’s other films so far, but this one I couldn’t really get into.

Got some backlog on the PVR (including some rewatches), new Criterion DVDs, some work to do on all of these lists and tons of available doubles. This should be fun.

1. The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939) 7.5/10
2. Easy Rider (Dennis Hopper, 1969) 7.5/10

1. Masculin féminin 1966 — a.k.a. Masculine-Feminine 6/10
I will read more about this alter today but I have a feeling this will blend in with a couple of other Godard movies in my memory, without any specific characters or statement remaining.

2. Carnival of Souls 1962 8/10
Some overacting (and over-the-top writing for the horny neighbour) but a pleasure to watch. Good for preparing my eyes for a lot of 60s aesthetics this month :)

01. He liu, by Tsai Ming-Liang (1997) TPSD #774

Not rating it for the moment, I need the awkwardness to settle a little before trying to deal with this...

Exactly! :D

Actually Tsai is one of my recent favourite directors that I can heartfully thank TSPDT for finding. All his films that I've seen have been very powerful experiences for me, He liu certainly being one of the strongest.

A Shot in the DarkShow
1. Strangers When We Meet (1960) TSPDT #958

2. Ride the High Country (1962) TSPDT #912

Image

Initially this feels unfocused as it begins to hone in on a courtship between a young woman and the protagonist's partner, but her role in the plot ends up driving things more than anything else; the film actually ends up more about the treatment of women without agency in the times of the Old West. Yet while this focus makes this decidedly different from most westerns of its era, and while Mariette Hartley tries her best, I still found this a bit 'eh'.

3. Charulata 1964 — a.k.a. The Lonely Wife 8-/10
Might have enjoyed it more if I had watched it in a more quiet environment and without a gf that got impatient because of the pacing. The swing sequence and the "Charulata writing inspiration" sequence were especially great.

As per Uncut Gems and Good Time, this Safdies film is blessed with an amazing music score: a slowly swelling synthesizer tune that often taunts the characters. Nothing else here though is especially great. The vibrant neon tones of Good Time only crop on occasion and the characters are pretty dislikeable, especially the protagonist with her failure to see through her abusive boyfriend. There is some interesting cycle of addiction stuff though.

OP updated. I also appreciate everyone adding in which list their viewings appear, though don't feel like it's mandatory. :)
If there are any mistakes, please let me know.

Let's take a look at the current decade breakdown. Just like for the list breakdown, I'm counting every episode of a series as an entry. Therefore, the 80s lead by a margin with the 60s in second place, though yet all close together still.

Image

And here is the graph when a (finished) series counts as one entry only. The 60s lead with the 70s and 80s following close.
