Sophie's Choice was half a great movie for me. Streep kills it though, the way she gradually loses her accent throughout the movie is insanse.

I'll save everyone else the trouble, and the forum shame if it survived much longer, and cut Titanic. There could be many reasons but the main one is that goddamn Celine Dion song.

Okay, my turn. I could cut The Wild Bunch again, but I'm going to defer one more round out of respect for the veto.

Instead, I'll cut Saving Private Ryan. Everyone knows the D-Day scene is well done. But that's only the first 15% of the movie. After that scene it's very Hollywood and paint-by-numbers, and the movie never reaches those heights again, nowhere close. It also comes off as incredibly pro-war to me, and my evidence for this is all the people I went to high school with who loved this movie and then went and joined the army as soon as they turned 18. Other films on this list do the cost of war much better so this needs to go.

Good cut. I loved Saving Private Ryan when I was a kid, but when I've revisited it over the years, the weaknesses become apparent (especially the framing device). The invasion scene is the main appeal, and to be fair, a Vietnam vet I once knew said it was the most realistic depiction of combat he had ever seen in a movie.

My cut goes to It's a Wonderful Life. I know this is a childhood Christmas classic for many people, so perhaps I suffer (or benefit) from having seen it as an adult, and not being a Christmas celebrant. It's a very peculiar movie, both of a piece with Capra's previous work and very different. (As an aside, I read something that pointed out that it contains an obvious violation of the production code). Rather than write up a new critique, I'll just post what I wrote last year when I saw it during the 1940s challenge:
blocho wrote: My initial reaction to this movie was the same as my initial reaction to Meet John Doe: Well, if you like well-crafted but ridiculous fables of glad tidings and good cheer and the innate decency of people ...

But if there's anything that recommends this movie, it's the way in which Capra, I think accidentally, betrays his long- and well-established fairy tale Americana. The scenes of Pottersville, for one thing, look a lot closer to real America in 1945 than Bedford Falls (at least urban America). And Jimmy Stewart's general freak out is really something else. I've read that Stewart came back from the war a changed man and a changed actor, scarred by the violence he'd seen and perpetrated, and though I think I saw a little bit of that in the westerns he did with Anthony Mann, it seems really clear in It's a Wonderful Life as George Bailey's life starts falling apart. Stewart (and here I'm talking about the Christmas Eve scenes when he berates his family, not his alternate reality adventures with the angel later on) is crazy and scary for a portion of this movie, in a way he never was even in the most desperate scenes in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. That movie showed a decent man beginning to doubt the essential decency of society. This movie shows a decent man losing his decency. It's a far more compelling portrait. I think Capra wanted to leave audiences with his same old-fashioned cornball feeling. Based on the movie's popularity, I guess he succeeded. But to me the movie really communicates immense despair.
Mighty's up next.

I probably like Ben-Hur more than most here, because I probably like all those Biblical epics more than most. But it's still not that great; to my mind there's exactly one great film of this type from the golden age for such flicks (1949-66) and that's The Egyptian (1954) which I really need to flog more - 0 lists, just over 100 checks. And even that film isn't one of the 100 greatest American films, maybe not one of the 500. God these AFI lists really do suck.
Hmmm I'll have to keep an eye out for that one, I also have a soft spot at times for those 50s/60s Biblical/classical epics. One relatively recent first time viewing I liked more than expected was Quo Vadis - some would probably be put off by the religious aspect, which is admittedly heavy-handed at times - but Nero's villainy kept me engaged.

Agreed that the AFI lists are brutal. They all seem to be driven by intense nostalgia for the big studio-driven content of a certain era, with almost no consideration for anything that veers even a tiny bit off that beaten path. That said, one of my all time favourites seems tailor-made for their lists and never showed up: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - several big stars, one of the biggest American directors and unbridled enthusiasm for the altruistic side of 19th century American democracy. BBC's American films poll from a few years ago generated, in my opinion, a vastly superior list.

Sad to see Mr Smith Goes to Washington go. Might be Capra's best movie. The reason given for its dismissal would much better fit Capra's Mr. Deeds goes to Town.

The Wild Bunch is a movie I've so far overlooked in the list. Like I couldn't bear its being on there and therefore unconsciously filtered it out of existence. But now it's time to stop fooling around and letting this abomination of a movie, that is even shitty for Peckinpah standards, go.

If you veto this I will look up you IP, hunt you down and have a nice long chat with you about what's going wrong with your life. And I will offer you my help to get your things back together and become a decent human person again. You now think I'm being idiotic but once I'm through talking to you, you will not know how to thank me enough. Vetoing this movie is a cry for help.

That is the final cut of Round 3! Capra got destroyed, but overall a less explosive round than round 2. We’ll take a quick break for vetoes, and then Round three will kick off at 10:00 am GMT on 5/17.

I think there's an error in the list. jeroeno used a veto to save 12 Angry Men in the third round, right?

That should leave us with 72 movies and 17 vetoes remaining.

You’re right, I totally missed joroeno using the veto on 12 Angry Men. Going back, I think I started skimming when he said it compared to Shawshank Redemption—kinda sounded like he was damning with faint praise to me. I will update the first post.

Close encounters of the third kind. I have also forgotten this film for some reason. Spielberg is the kind of director, who gets worse with age. Especially his Sci-fi films impress me the least. I think Arrival is better than this.

Honestly, I was hoping that somebody else would already jump in and ditch it, but since they haven't, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I haven't seen it in 18 years but I can vividly recall how disappointed I was at the time at how a book that I had liked so much as a child had been turned into a film with negligible character development at the expense of a lot of repetitive action scenes. It might be interesting to revisit it now, but even if I liked it more, I cannot imagine supporting its inclusion in this list. This is the only 21st century film in the AFI list and I doubt it would still be there if the list was updated today. So many other 21st century American films have made so much more of an impression, and it's just not me thinking this; the film is barely hanging onto its position in the TSP 21st Century Top 100, so to see it in an all-time Top 100 here feels like a bit of a facepalm.

I like the LOTR films for what they are - maybe more now than when they came out - but yeah, they fail in many respects as adaptations to my mind. I've been thinking of giving them all a re-watch before long but I'm fairly sure it will be a mixed bag as it was the last time I saw them 5 1/2 years ago.

I was thinking of taking out Lord of the Rings but assumed someone else would get to it. I'm gladdened that a person who loved the book hated the movie because I never read the book and hated the movie. I assumed until now that maybe it was something that only people who had read the book could appreciate. It's nice to see people of different backgrounds come together in cinematic antipathy.

My pick: 99. Toy Story

Caught a bit of this when my girlfriend was rewatching the series not too long ago. I've never liked Pixar (beyond some of their short work), they set a terrible example for US animation of which the effects are still very much tangible today. Toy Story deserves its place in film history, but it's just not a good film. Poor animation, annoying characters, bad dubbing, no heart. And Pixar's only redeeming quality (technical excellence) is pretty much moot 25 years down the line. Not sure if the US animation scene would've been better if this film never got made, but it sure didn't do anything to elevate it.

Close encounters of the third kind. I have also forgotten this film for some reason. Spielberg is the kind of director, who gets worse with age. Especially his Sci-fi films impress me the least. I think Arrival is better than this.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think Close Encounters is on the list.

Honestly, I was hoping that somebody else would already jump in and ditch it, but since they haven't, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
Yeah, exactly why I didn't pick it earlier. For me it represents everything good fantasy shouldn't be. It's not even the franchise's fault, it probably just became a victim of its own success, but there is no more wonder or surprise in LOTR. Nothing that inspires or feels inspired. It's just wizards and dwarfs and dragons, creatures/a universe most people are more familiar with than how people a continent away from them spend their daily lives.

LOTR is one of the only fantasy films I like and represents all that is good about fantasy :P . All three get better the more I see them, all 9s and 10s for me. I’d veto it if there wasn’t such a hate following for it...

I still don't get where people are looking when picking the wrong movie. It's an official list on iCM, so how can it be unclear which list to look at?

Oh i see. It's because i'm looking at the IMDB version, so i can see my ratings at the same time. It's probably the old version. Was a little busy at that time. Sorry about that.

Lets see, i will keep the spirit of my previous choice and go with E.T. This film is one the list at least. Actually a good movie in its own merits. But it's still a children film, and its one of the few left to cut that i have no interest in rewatching.

I vote to eliminate Easy Rider. A time-piece and harbinger of the New Hollywood, but cultural importance aside, it's not as good as the films that followed.

I never understood the love for Easy Rider. Jack Nicholson's performance is the only think I enjoyed. And the choppers. The choppers are pretty sweet.

I loved it when I saw it back in the 90s but have no idea how I'd feel now. I remember it having a very depressing and very real "end of the summer of love" feel to it and that's a lot of what worked. I definitely wouldn't have voted it off but no longer remember it well enough to promote it or veto a down-vote or anything. Want to re-watch it alongside Woodstock again before too long but I think it would depress me too much in the current environment.

Just watched Woodstock for the first time a few weeks ago. Excellent documentary. I love your idea of the the double bill with Easy Rider too, that's a great callout. And now I'm wondering how Easy Rider would pair with The Big Chill, which I just watched last week. I'm sure it was a nostalgia-fueled look back to the summer of love from the vantage point of the 80s when it was released, but nowadays it feels downright cynical.

Don't remember much liking The Big Chill but that memory is dim indeed; I think I probably saw it in the 80s. Yeah that would be a good double feature as well, or maybe throw Return of the Secaucus Seven into the mix. I like the idea of the thematic double or triple feature but I rarely do it and there's no excuse now. Made up a list of possibilities years and years ago, wonder if I still have it.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - I just remember it as having a kind of cosy nostalgia that grates a little, similar with The Sting.

I'm cutting Annie Hall this round. I find Woody Allen's schtick irritating for the most part, and this movie just failed to grab my attention or interest in any real way.

My cut is Star Wars.

I remember seeing Star Wars when I was maybe 8 or 9 and enjoying it, along with the only two sequels that existed at the time. Sometime during middle school, though, I became somewhat aware that things were out of hand. Part of it was the advent of the prequel trilogy, which seemed to unleash all sorts of weird fandom and cult behavior I simply didn't know existed until then. When a trailer for the first prequel appeared one time at a movie theater, the audience started applauding just at the sight of the Lucas logo. I'd never seen that happen before. A buddy of mine became entranced with a Star Wars-themed collectible card game. He also obsessively played a Star Wars computer game and was involved in an online forum for people who played that game (and nothing is weirder than an online forum about movies, right!).

So it's really hard to see Star Wars as it is and without the 43 years of fan culture and commercial empire building that has followed. I think I came close, though, when I rewatched it a few years ago. I hadn't seen it in about 20 years, and I never watched the prequel trilogy. I watched Star Wars 7 without any preconceptions and enjoyed it. So I rewatched the original and tried to see it with fresh eyes. And it was fine. It was a decent sci-fi action flick. It doesn't belong in any pantheon beyond the visual effects pantheon. It doesn't deserve cult fandom or endless worship or exegesis.

The cut for Star Wars finally comes through. I can't begrudge anyone this cut, because objectively Star Wars is not one of the best American Films of all time. But I think Roger Ebert sums it up pretty well:

"To see "Star Wars" again after 20 years is to revisit a place in the mind. George Lucas' space epic has colonized our imaginations, and it is hard to stand back and see it simply as a motion picture, because it has so completely become part of our memories. It's as goofy as a children's tale, as shallow as an old Saturday afternoon serial, as corny as Kansas in August--and a masterpiece. Those who analyze its philosophy do so, I imagine, with a smile in their minds. May the Force be with them."

I'll think about whether the visit back to the place in my own mind is worth spending my last veto. But I can't help but have the warmest feelings for this film. It's not just the movie, but it's my mother showing me the movie and incepting my love of sci-fi, it's my brother and I pretending to fight with lightsabers, it's me trying to use the force to move things across the room. Star Wars is just a supremely affecting film for me.

Beautifully stated. My feelings are much the same - I saw the film in 1977, when it came out, when I was 11, the absolutely perfect age to see it for the first time. It was my first PG film - parents were ridiculously overprotective in many ways - and it was the film that made me a movie lover. There's a box with the trading cards sitting behind me in my room as I speak, and there's a stack of calendars on the floor that I'm wondering what to do with right now, including the 1978 Star Wars; I wish I'd found my old action figures when I helped my mom move out of her house 7 years ago, I remember spending a long time looking for them. No movie has influenced my passion for film and really my whole approach to culture and the arts more. It's certainly a film with plenty of flaws, and certainly those not having that magical first experience - not coming to it from the same or a similar place to it that I did, or that you did, aren't likely to share the unconditional love for it I have. But I think most people have a film like that, don't they? Even if sometimes they don't wan to admit it (I didn't, for a while).

My choice this round is MASH. I really don't get this film and it's not funny (or enjoyable) in the slightest. I remember feeling it was pretty dated and the humour was very silly and '12 year old boy'-ish. So not really deserving of top 100 status.
