Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 4 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 4 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Mar 1st
Countdown till deadline

The countries that end at 1st and 2nd place proceed to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Ranked by highest average ranking (= lowest number).
- In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
- In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between three or four movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? Fewest #4-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #3 and #4).
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 32 films from 32 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 8 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 16 remaining countries will be divided into 8 matches of 2. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each match proceeds to the next round. This continues till the final.

Os Verdes Anos is the greatest Portuguese movie according to the official list. Interesting.

It was a film of the week

1. Luna Papa 7/10
2. Egy erkölcsös éjszaka 6/10
3. Os Verdes Anos 6/10
4. Last Cab to Darwin 3/10

I would have rated Last Cab to Darwin higher if it had ended sooner. The film seemed to get worse as it went on. I don't remember much about Os Verdes Anos (although I watched it years ago), so I put Egy erkölcsös éjszaka above it. Luna Papa is weird, but it's mostly fun.

2. Luna Papa
3. Last Cab to Darwin
4. Egy erkölcsös éjszaka

Interestingly both Károly Makk and Paulo Rocha are selected for the second time in Film World Cup.
And Luna Papa just reminds me of Kusturica's works.

Will the "greatest Portuguese movie of all time" finally be enough to get Portugal over to the 2nd round?

What goods can Tajikistan bring for the 2nd round?

Btw the top countries are once again bottom.

Just a small note regarding Público's list:

1) It was never intended to be a "best of" list. It was a list of ten people suggesting ten national and ten foreign films that kids aged 11/12 to 17/18 should watch in school as part of the national curriculum. The criteria is obviously very different from a Best Portuguese Films list.

2) Ten people voted on this list: of those, three were directors, one was a former head of the National Cinematheque (for a very brief period), and the remaining six came from other fields. Most of the list (over two thirds) is comprised of films that got a single vote.

I'm all for praising Os Verdes Anos, and it would probably top a Best Portuguese Films poll done by a reputable source (either that, Aniki Bóbó or Vale Abraão), but Público's list is far from being a reliable source...mainly because it never intended to be one in the first place.

Last Cab to Darwin 8+
Luna Papa 7
Egy erkolcsos ejszaka 6+
Os Verdes Anos 5

Noticed the Hungry movie is a Palme d'Or nominee

Tajikistan is the least free country that has ever participated. It's tied for ~12th from the bottom on the Freedom Of The World list.

3. Os Verdes Anos 7/10
4. Egy erkölcsös éjszaka 6/10

I really liked Luna Papa and Last Cab. Both have some feelgood-feeling over it, although dealing with a harsh subject. Last Cab is harsher, because there's less comedy, but I never felt sorry for the guy, but mostly felt respect for the strong personality. Well played. I preferred Luna Papa because of the joyful playfulness. It has a lot of charm, especially because of the natural acting of the leading actress. I also liked the messy things happening on screen with quite some speed and lots of things happening in the background and around the main people, a bit like a Kusturica-movie.

1. Luna Papa - This was a lot of fun. I found the energetic narrative particularly engaging as it capitalises on the unusual storyline; even if the film as a whole seems to lack a certain polish - being rough around the edges works to its advantage and adds to the overall charm. 7/10

2. Egy erkölcsös éjszaka - I seem to be watching a lot of films about brothels lately and this was another enjoyable romp! Some great characters in a lavish setting although I found the dramatic aspects of the film less effective than the comedy. 6/10

3. Last Cab to Darwin - I enjoy Australian cinema but this didn't strike a chord with me as much as other Australian film's I've seen recently. The storyline seemed to be stretched out and could have perhaps benefited from a brisker pace but apart from this I was invested in the main character's plight and curious to see how his journey progressed. 6/10

4. Os Verdes Anos - This has been on my radar for some time as it has occasionally appeared towards the lower part of the ICM Most Favourite's list. I can't fault the competent direction but found the storyline unengaging and it didn't resonate with me on an emotional level, which all of the other choices did to a certain extent. 6/10

Thanks to all the managers for the picks

1. Luna Papa (1999) 6/10
2. Os Verdes Anos (1963) 6/10
3. Egy erkölcsös éjszaka (1977) 5/10
4. Last Cab to Darwin (2015) 4/10

Strong entry for Portugal, the other two didn't do much for me. I found Last Cab to be a bit too predictable.

Kusturica was also my first thought when watching Luna Papa, I liked how colorful the film looks, and how over the top some parts are.
