Exactly. Do you have the spare time to run the numbers on this?
By only going by the years:

2020:
8. Mexico (newish - as a group i 2018)
10. Caribbean (newish - as a group i 2018)
13. South America (newish - as a group i 2018)
16. Balkans (newish - as a group i 2019)
15. Africa (2018)
17. Canada (2018)
18. Germany/Austria/Switzerland (2018)
19. Iberia (Spain, Portugal and surrounds) (2018)
22. Middle East - excluding Iran (2018)
23. Nordic countries (2018)
20. India/Pakistan/Myanmar/Bangladesh (2017)
24. Southeast Asia (2017)

2021: - 11/12 were held in 2019
1. Benelux
2. China/Hong Kong/Taiwan
3. Eastern Europe - excluding Russia and Balkans
4. France
5. Italy
6. Japan
7. Korean Peninsula
11. Oceania
12. Russia/USSR
14. UK/Ireland
21. Iran/Central Asia
9. Central America (newish - as a group i 2018)

Balkans and East Europe makes sense to split up in seperate years, but I really would like to split Latin America up in 2-2, but there was only room for one.

So we can trade one of the 2021 countries (except E Europe) with one of the three Latin Americas.

Those groupings look great, albajos! Thanks for the hard work. Anybody else have feedback on us going down this pathway?

Well, we had an Iran-Only (rather than Iran/Central Asia) Challenge this year, so how about placing Iran/Central Asia in the 2020 lineup and kicking South America into 2021?

I love what albajos has done with splitting things and the rotation. I do agree with Roger that having some flexibility and altering the rotation every so often would be nice. I.E. not getting concretely locked into any one thing, with some room to maneuver.
Other than that looks great to me.

I'd be rather sad to see the French challenge go bi-yearly but the pairings tentatively proposed here do in the main look appealing, I must admit.

It might not be a popular opinion, but it seems like there's a major film-producing country that's been left out of this list. I'm not saying it has to be a part of it, but I'm wondering why it has been excluded.

You're always welcome to start your own Unofficial USA Challenge, but I don't think we need to include that in the Official Challenge Schedule - same as our exclusion of the Drama genre.

@peeps & flexibility - we can review this again in September next year but it would be good to have a tentative 2020/2021 schedule going forward with the world zones

For everybody who supports the 24 region divides from albajos, which of these options would you prefer?

(I don't have a strong preference myself either way)

OPTION #1OPTION #2
2020:
Mexico (newish - as a group in 2018)
Caribbean (newish - as a group in 2018)
Balkans (newish - as a group in 2019)
Africa (2018)
Canada (2018)

Iberia (Spain, Portugal and surrounds) (2018)
Middle East - excluding Iran (2018)
Nordic countries (2018)
India/Pakistan/Myanmar/Bangladesh (2017)
Southeast Asia (2017)
Iran/Central Asia (newish)

2021
Benelux
China/Hong Kong/Taiwan
Eastern Europe - excluding Russia and Balkans
France
Italy
Japan
Korean Peninsula
Oceania
Russia/USSR
UK/Ireland
South America (newish - as a group in 2018)
Central America (newish - as a group in 2018)
2020:
India/Pakistan/Myanmar/Bangladesh (2 times)
Middle East - excluding Iran (2 times)
Benelux (3 times)
Korean Peninsula (3 times)
Canada (3 times)
Iberia (Spain, Portugal and surrounds) (3 times)
Iran/Central Asia (3 times)

Assuming that those who have reservations about the groupings are allowed to voice a preference, I would opt for Option 1. I think it has less repeats and so would offer freshness.

By going by the heavy countries (Germany, Spain, India, China, France, Italy, Japan, UK, Russia) It's 3-6 in both, so if people want to move China, we'll get 4-5 all over the board. (Probably trade with Southeast Asia)

Other than that either one is fine by me.

Great idea to split it up in 24 regions and rotate those. (And if it doesn't satisfy after all, we can always change back to another schedule over time).

I feel that in both options most of the major countries are done all in the same year, 2021: France, Italy, China, Japan, Russia, UK/Spain. Maybe we could find a better mix between heavy and non-major

Yes.I suggested moving China (with Southeast Asia). Then it would be 4-5.

(We have 6 "major" countries in 2019 as well. Nobdy complained about that :p )

Are these set in stone? Maybe switch some challenges for option 2, so as not to have the "most popular" ones till now grouped together every two years. Like France + Germany (+ Balkans) to 2020 and BeNeLux + UK/Irland (+ Eastern Europe) to 2021; and Japan or China/Hong Kong/Taiwan for one of the other Asian Challenges.

No, these aren't set in stone, though most folks seem to want Option 1, so that's probably the one that we'll be adjusting.

Suggested adjustment: Include China in 2020 and place Southeast Asia in 2021. This would make the lineup look like this:

OPTION #1 - 2020 LineupOPTION #1 - 2021 Lineup
2020
Mexico (newish - as a group in 2018)
Caribbean (newish - as a group in 2018)
Balkans (newish - as a group in 2019)
Africa (2018)
Canada (2018)
China/Hong Kong/Taiwan
Germany/Austria/Switzerland (2018)
Iberia (Spain, Portugal and surrounds) (2018)
Middle East - excluding Iran (2018)
Nordic countries (2018)
India/Pakistan/Myanmar/Bangladesh (2017)
Iran/Central Asia (newish)
2021
Benelux
Eastern Europe - excluding Russia and Balkans
France
Italy
Japan
Korean Peninsula
Oceania
Russia/USSR
UK/Ireland
South America (newish - as a group in 2018)
Southeast Asia (2017)
Central America (newish - as a group in 2018)

I don't have any issues with including China in the 2020 lineup. I'm not sure if swapping out Southeast is the best option since that will make it four years since the Challenge has been run (maybe we should swap back out Iran & Central Asia instead?) but yeah, totally flexible to whatever everybody else wants with this.

I will need to leave for work soon, but will check this thread again after school. Oh, and a further reminder that we will discuss this once again in September next year before going ahead with whatever 2021 Schedule we tentatively put in place.

I would definitely vote for Southeast Asia in 2020. It's about time for that challenge. We've had Iran this year so yeah, swap Iran to 2021 instead.

2020 looks too full of challenges that aren't going to be busy and 'big'. I'm all for niche and interesting challenges but I think there should be two swaps in the interest of levelling things out between years.

From the option newly proposed two posts above, I would take out Iran/Central Asia (as the rest of the Middle East is also in 2020) and China/HK/Taiwan (this one should be glaringly obvious; I really don't think we need to run this one three years in a row!) and swap in two of France, Italy, UK/Ireland or Southeast Asia.

I think things would look a lot better spread around between 2020 and 2021 if those two changes were enacted. I wonder what others might think of this?

Should be obvious, it's not like we want people to only see movies from 2017, 2018 and 2019 in the others

New grouping, but part of a bigger entity earlier

Revising my earlier suggestion a tad...

How about France and Southeast Asia being bumped into 2020 and Iran/Central Asia and China/HK/Taiwan being put into 2021? Does that make more sense and accomodate the desire expressed here to have a Southeast Asia challenge next year?

No, that doesn't make sense to me. We don't need an Official French Challenge for the ninth year in a row.

I will swap Iran/Central Asia and Southeast Asia though, since everybody seems on board with that.

Regarding your concern over the 2020 lineup being full of potentially low participation challenges, there's no way of knowing for sure unless we test things out. We will have another conversation in September next year and discuss how things are going, so nothing's permanently cemented in - but we do have a plan.

And don't forget, you are always welcome to host Unofficial Challenges for ideas not in a given year's schedule. :)

Okay, I just thought the French challenge would be a popular mainstay among challenge participants and would help to even things up a little in terms of possible participation. The fact that it's been held 8 years in a row should say something about its enduring popularity among challenge participants. I do think this is a short-sighted decision but, since other voices haven't chimed in, I understand that that's where we are.

Do you think China/HK/Taiwan needs to be run three years in a row?

I don't know if any Challenge really "needs" to be run three times in a row, but between Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan, the region has produced thousands upon thousands of films over the past 90+ years, so I really doubt if participants will suddenly tire of after a mere three goes. Personally speaking, I have ranked in the top 10 for the Challenge the last two times that it was run, and I still feel like I am only just beginning to get a grasp on the enormous output of the region.

The big picture is that every thing is run once in two years. And nothing will be run twice in a row from now on. The goal is to explore the entire world.

What should be where I really don't care as everything will be covered anyway.

Everything except the USA. The Korean Peninsula and the Caribbean will be covered as regularly as France. That sounds very snide of me I know but I do feel a bit unhappy and sad with aspects of this new plan.

Anyway, I'll leave my contributions to this thread there.
That's all, folks!

Guess us Francophiles will just have to settle for Quebec, Haiti & Martinique, former French Africa, and French Switzerland in the intervening years.

And you don't really need a challenge to watch french movies every year, do you?

Many of them fits the thematic challenges regardless, so many choices to pick from there, every single year.

I can understand the sentiments expressed about France, specifically, since I really enjoyed that one this year and there are a plethora of films from that area. However, most films fall into more than one category as challenges go. Plenty of French films will likely qualify for other officials like decade, theme etc. so one can still get their French-mojo on even without an official French challenge every year.

I agree with Roger. There does seem to be a bit of imbalance between the two years in terms of which countries/regions are most popular. But I could be wrong. Maybe there are 35 people out there who are really jazzed about the Caribbean challenge.

I agree; that was also my intention with yesterday’s post. Even though it allows some challenges to be run again this year, in the long run - if the bi-yearly swap stays - I think small changes would “balance“ things out.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

I agree also that the balance is off. To me this are the major film countries in 2020 and 2021 with this option:
OPTION #1 - 2020 LineupOPTION #1 - 2021 Lineup
2020
Mexico (newish - as a group in 2018)
Caribbean (newish - as a group in 2018)
Balkans (newish - as a group in 2019)
Africa (2018)
Canada (2018)
China/Hong Kong/Taiwan
Germany/Austria/Switzerland (2018)
Iberia (Spain, Portugal and surrounds) (2018)
Middle East - excluding Iran (2018)
Nordic countries (2018)
India/Pakistan/Myanmar/Bangladesh (2017)
Iran/Central Asia (newish)
2021
Benelux
Eastern Europe - excluding Russia and Balkans
France
Italy
Japan
Korean Peninsula
Oceania
Russia/USSR
UK/Ireland
South America (newish - as a group in 2018)
Southeast Asia (2017)
Central America (newish - as a group in 2018)

And I'm even stretching it a bit, cause both Germany and Spain aren't on the level of France, Japan and Russia. India is, of course, also a major country but less popular on this forum I think than all other major countries in 2021, and I think even Eastern Europe can hold its own against it.

I would suggest swapping Russia, because we also have Eastern Europe in 2021, for Middle East - excluding Iran, since with Iran we do also have one Middle Eastern country covered in 2020 and I think it balance out more that way. Other options to swap with could be Canada or Nordic.
