I don't much value the specific rankings for the runners up on this list, so for a little variety I'm going to post 151-200 in order of number of voters.

If I'd submitted a list, I think this would've been it: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls044560811/. Really not a lot of films I like directed by women...

Pet Sematary would have barely made the list with a #3 vote. You'd be the only voter for The Secret Life of Words.

24 checks and it's over 2.5 hours long, probably. It may be an official check, but that Asian Cinema list is probably not something many people work on, especially not in a manner that will make this film a priority.

Naoko Ogigami is another director I didn't know was female.

I haven't seen anything by Lupino, but I'm also surprised that nothing of hers made the top 200.

Oh! I have been censored, because I stated, that two humans with testicles (biological male) made the matrix movie!
What's up guys!
Can somebody not handle the obvious things.

For me it is a  to see this movie ranking in this list 'directed by women'. I think it missleds the background of this list. It's not that future film of the Wachowskis should't appear here.

Per definition: Male/Female are biological terms used for sex, Man/Woman are used for gender role/identity, whether or not someone has testicles is not relevant to this, though it can be argued that The Matrix should not be included if they did not yet identify/occupy the social role of women.

I actually don't think that post should be removed either. Leave it on there so that you can embarass yourself with your transphobia.

You had this discussion in the nominations thread. It made sense there even if no one was trying to actually discuss things and just stated their opinions.

I don't see the point of doing so in this thread, especially if all you're going to do is link to the wikipedia article for testicles. If you care so much to debate the intricacies of gender and sex then make a thread in off topic. The consensus in the trans community is that gender is there whether it's presented or not and Lana has said she considered herself a woman well before The Matrix was filmed. So it's appropriate for many people to decide that's enough to include the film. You're free to have a different opinion and to exclude that film from your list.

Although the ideas of 'The Matrix' extend far beyond that and it's a profound example of a film that anyone can read however they want, it can definitely be viewed as being about transitioning (as a subset of the larger themes of surpassing biologically and socially-imposed 'identity'), there's countlessly many imagery and quotes supporting that.

This struck me on my latest rewatch before I saw this -- timely recently released -- video which nicely condenses the interpretation, including many of the Wachowskis' own words:

The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss,
And through the palpable obscure find out

Upborn with indefatigable wings,
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile?

Thanks for the info. I suppose that some of those recent indie films (The Fits, The Rider) would do better if we re-ran the poll in a few year's time when they are better known and have been seen by a wider fan-base. Not sure what is the case with Swept Away though. I saw it at about the same time as Seven Beauties and I thought both films were pretty much on the same level, though I guess the latter is probably a little better known.

No Miranda July still after 250 titles?

Yes, she is probably more of a contemporary artist rather than a filmmaker, but there must be someone that likes her stuff even how weird it is.

It will be interesting to see the full results list when Peaceful publishes it -- surely a good reference point for next year's Directed by Women Challenge.

The list needs major work. Too many very good films and filmmakers left out, while some inclusions were reaches, at best

Why don't you make a list? Then we'll know exactly how to vote.

It’s not a truly complete results topic without cinewest chiming in with his peanut gallery criticism of the list, in yet another poll that he could have easily voted in but didn’t.

Well, you could make a rule to exclude feedback from anyone who hasn't voted. How would that be?
And if that doesn't satisfy you, you could make another rule saying "no criticism allowed."

You could say something like, although we make lists that rate and rank movies by professional filmmakers, we won't allow our lists to be criticized or assessed by anyone.

To generally criticise a list without argument is not discussion, it's trolling.

If you want to point out particular movies, you're free to do so.

But as always, there is no objective truth in movie quality. It's all about the subjective perception. There are way too many that think that their subjectivity are the objective truth, so that's why we have a democratic vote
