Doubling the Canon 2019 Update - Results

#1

Post by Angel Glez » February 16th, 2019, 9:41 am

Welcome to our annual update. :cheers:

What is this?
Begun in 2007, Doubling the Canon is a yearly project which aims to expand the Film Canon as crafted by the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? website. Originally it was a selection of 1000 movies to complement the TSPDT Top 1000, now it is a list of 1000-1250 which complements both the all time Top 1000 and the companion TSPDT Top 1000 of the 21st century.

Who can participate?
Anyone can join. Requirement for newbies: Please note that you will be requested to identify yourself, just to make sure that the poll is answered (only once) by cinephiles of good will.

Where?
In this thread.
In the SCFZ thread: http://scfzforum.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=108
Via e-mail: doublingthecanon@hotmail.com

What is new in this update?
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2014 entries.

2018 update:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3590

Phase I: Nominations for titles not on either the TSPDT lists or the Doubling list.
Deadline: March 18
Each participant can nominate a maximum of 12 films. Shorts, TV-movies, and TV mini-series are eligible. Every nominated movie goes onto the roster as a nominee. Films released in 2018-19 aren't allowed this year for our exercise.

Please, don't edit your post! To change your ballot (undesirable) or add new titles you have to write a new reply.

Phase II: Ratings.
You're invited to rate the films you have seen (whether you have participated in the phase I or not). The nominees with the highest ratings make it into our list.
You can cast your votes anytime between now and Thursday, April 25. Only 'write-in' updates will be accepted after the deadline.
Please, sign your ballot. Example: This is Angel Glez from Spain. The country is optional, but it would be interesting to have a country breakdown of the doublers.

Rating system:
6=All time top 600
5=All time top 601-1,200
4=All time top 1,201-1,800
3=All time top 1,801-2,400
2=It's a good movie, but not special enough to deserve placement in a 2,400-movie canon
1=It's an average movie, far from good enough to deserve placement on this list
0=I dislike this movie
Note: The cutoff was 3.91 last year. That means a 3 does not really help a film make the list.

Procedure 1: Just download the ballot (if you prefer I can send you the file) and email it back to me (doublingthecanon@hotmail.com)
The ballot is a couple of posts below.
Procedure 2: Online (PM me for details)

Don't remove anything, don't reorder. Untouched ballot with ratings, please.

After submitting your ballot, post a reply here to make sure I received the file. You can also add comments or statistics if you wish.

Early ballots would be appreciated. Then, if you watch new films or forgot to rate some, send me a 'write-in' ballot.

Thank you in advance for joining us in this game.

P.S.: If you know anyone adventurous enough (on or off the forum) that you think would also enjoy participating, feel free to invite them as well.

How may votes did a movie need to even be considered for the list? I need to check if it's pointless to renominate my previous ones.

Is it still 8?

lsXXXXXX and lsYYYYYY need to be replaced by the holdovers list and the current nominations list. I assume frbrown will still make those lists this year, if not I suppose I could.

Cool list -- looking to participate for first time.

Can someone explain to me the "Backups" in some nominations above? Are they in case someone else nominates the same film from one's main list of nominations, as I assume there is no value in two people nominating the same film?

The backups are in case someone else nominated it or the film is ineligible for some other reason. Sometimes people make mistakes when checking, especially if the search links or nominations list aren't updated. They also serve as suggestions for others sometimes.

Search link: Your ratings sorted by rating, excluding ineligible and already nominated films(pending)
https://www.imdb.com/search/title?my_ra ... date=,2017

lsXXXXXX and lsYYYYYY need to be replaced by the holdovers list and the current nominations list. I assume frbrown will still make those lists this year, if not I suppose I could.
This search link Now includes the nominations from the spreadsheet. I'll be adding the nominations in the thread to this IMDb list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls043489375/

DtC 2019 ballot
(under construction)
I emailed my nominations yesterday morning. Just checking to see if you received it as my noms aren't on the list. But it's totally okay if you have a lot of catching up to do.
I don't think any nominations have been added to the list yet.

Nominations added to the unofficial imdb list:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls043489375/
6Show
Perception de Ambiguity
Carmel1379
zhangalan
Ivan0716
XxXApathy420XxX
72allinncallme
[/spoiler[
Great work, PA, much appreciated! Without these links many people would be struggling to submit.

Going by the iMDB list, thaks Peaceful, I actually have 484 films rated 9 or higher (about half of my 9s), a bit stunned, and more 10s than before, seems many favorites have dropped off ... :(

At least I won't have a hard time finding films to promote, but will be more difficult to choose than usual.

I actually have a similar problem... but I'll try to nominate films on no lists in the hope of making a few official.

Of the 12 last time, 6 had too few votes (one only I voted for)
Only 1 got a high enough score to get into the list, but needed two more votes

I'll put the ones that got more than 3.5 back into the list until they get 8 votes. (or drop below 3.5)
No official checks this time either

Nominated
Askeladden og de gode hjelperne (1961) IMDB ICM
Best of Enemies (2015) IMDB ICM
Bullets Over Broadway (1994) IMDB ICM
Herr Bohm och sillen (1988) IMDB ICM
Hjertestart (2017) IMDB ICM
Ma-ma (1976) IMDB ICM
Megane (2007) IMDB ICM
The Most Hated Family in America (2007) IMDB ICM
Resan till Melonia (1989) IMDB ICM
Senaste Nytt (1997) IMDB ICM
Den store barnedåpen (1931) IMDB ICM
Sumarlandið (2010) IMDB ICM

Is frbrown retired? He has been my partner all these years...
I'm not sure if it's a permanent retirement, but the last couple of years I've been overwhelmed by the number of nominations. Maybe someone more tech-savy than me will find a way to automate the list-making and take over.

I'm sorry to break the partnership, Angel :(

Good luck to Peaceful!

If there's a tech savvy way of automating this I don't see it. Between some people not posting imdb links and people posting backups I don't see a quicker way to do things, at least not one where the effort would be proportionate to the time savings. I should be able to keep up, though. Be glad to have you take over again next year if you want, though.

Are TSPDT and 21 Century dropoffs auto-nominated?

People should be obliged to include IMDb-links, so it saves PA LOTS of time.
