My list from last time. I really don't want to expand this one beyond 100, but I might make a longer imdb-list this last week. TBA

Fun, completely random and uninteresting fact: I currently have exactly the same number of favorites on iCM as I have dislikes: 547
Harsh.
No it's called balanced.
You should watch some Vogel shorts. That way your dislikes would be more in balance with your favs as well. :P
I like most of the stuff I've seen from that list, but I doubt I'll ever be masochistic enough to watch the vomit-piss stuff or certain other things. But I'll probably always be a high rater, and being here and seeing how many people (not you so much - which is why I'm surprised that you have so many dislikes) live in a world where the vast, vast majority of films range from unwatchable to not-quite-ok, I'm even more confirmed in my glass half-full attitude.

Maybe I should add that I favorite 9's and 10's and I dislike 1's, 2's, 3's and 4's. So the dislikes are a wider range of ratings than my favorites.

Here's my ratings distribution on IMDb:

Image

This graph clearly shows more 9's and 10's than 1's, 2's, 3's and 4's together, because I've also rated lots of episodes 9 or 10 on IMDb, but haven't favorited them on iCM, because I use the favorites-list on iCM as my ranked list for movies.

Same is true for me. I have more dislikes than favourites because I only favourite 10/10 but dislike 1-4 and my rating distribution is even more top skewed than joachim's.

Yeah I do the same thing - 9s and 10s are "favorites", 1-4 are dislikes - but I still end up with 5x as many favorites. I suppose it shows just as much the flaws in numerical ratings as anything else - what do we mean by a 1, 4 or 10? And for that matter what do we mean when we say we "love" or "hate' something? My all-time favorites list is mostly films that I rated 10, but there are quite a few 9s, one or two 8s, and a couple of 1s (Ed Wood films) on the list. So clearly for me at least there isn't a pure correspondence between the number I assign and how I actually feel about a film; also I never ever change a rating (outside of the first 24 hours after seeing it) unless I see it again, and I tend to much more rarely downgrade things than upgrade them - in part of course because I only re-watch films usually if I already love them, or think I might like them more.

But I think a big part of why people here seem on the whole more negative to me than they did on IMDb is the check obsession - obviously one is probably more likely to find films they dislike when working on numerous lists that in some cases they have little sympathy for. But I also started in my cinemania around other people who were typically much more generous in their ratings/feelings about films than folks here, and the fact that several of them were pro film critics certainly made me feel more justified in trying always to see the best in films and ignore the worst if at all possible.

10/10 favorites = 110
01/10 dislikes = 353

But I have a backlog of about 2000 votes from the last years I'm trying to update. But 1:3 ratio is probably correct

I keep it balanced. 8-10/10 are favourites and 1-3/10 are dislikes.

The meaning of ratings is a never ending discussion. Just like you I'm still surprised how many people here seem to hate movies...... well, rate lots of movies really low.

To me if I somewhat enjoyed the movie and didn't see major flaws with it, then I rate it at least a 6/10. Almost 10,000 of my ratings are 6 and higher. Less than 2,000 are 5 and lower and only 25% of those are 4 and lower. So most of my watches are positive experiences. Would be weird if it wasn't that way, because then I should find another hobby instead of watching movies.

Here again you see the problem of comparing ratings. I use the word "decent" for movies I rate 6 or 7, but here it is 2.5, which seems to me like the equivalent of 5/10. "Mediocre" means somewhere in the middle for me, but 2.0 on a scale of 5 is on the low side, so "mediocre" seems like the wrong word to me for such a rating. So when you rate movies on this site (Letterboxd?), do you see those words every time, so you get reminded of the meaning that site gives to those words? Or do you have your own meanings in your mind.

It's rateyourmusic. Decent could probably be renamed to average. I put mediocre at 4/10 because it has a more negative connotation. Although it is subjective, I find that mediocre falls below average. I consider it to start entering bad territory, but not bad enough for me to necessarily dislike it.

You got me curious so I did some research on it. Here's what an RPG game does for the latter of adjectives. Mediocre is placed below average: https://fate-srd.com/fate-core/taking-a ... the-ladder

If you think this is bad, there's some terrible rating systems on RYM. The most notable example are the few users who put everything bad at 1/10, and 2/10+ means good.

It's always interesting to sort in the new entries, that I discovered the year before and also to see which rewatches couldn't hold their stand.

I'm hoping I'll add more to the ranked portion over the next 1.5 months, and I'll repost close to the deadline. But in case I forget, here it is.
UPDATE: Consider this fully ranked: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/maxw ... xwelldeux/

(It took way longer to rank it than I thought, but I'm glad I did. Now my wife can stop calling me, and by extension all of you, nerds.)

I'll bite again:
Submitting a list of 6372 titles and claiming it's ranked, seems like trolling to me.
Submitting a list of titles with less than 400 checks for a poll about all time favorites, seems like trolling to me.
Submitting a list for a poll, which contains 55% of your total ratings on IMDb, seems like trolling to me.
And since you only included movies with less than 400 checks, I wonder how long your list would have been if you also voted for your favorites with more than 400 checks. My guess is that you would have voted for At least 80% of all your rating and you probably would have claimed that to be ranked as well.
Seriously, PdA, I really wish you would submit a serious list for once. Most of your submissions are ridiculous and actually and nuisance for the host of the poll. Your lists have a large impact on the statistics (average list length, total of movies voted for, number of movies with only one vote, etc...) and delay the work of the host (you always submit lists that contain movies that are not on iCM yet, although the bug on iCM is not your fault......).

We often have discussions about what people should vote vote (look at the Fantasy noms at the moment), but most of all I want people to take these polls seriously and I can't take any of your submissions serious anymore.
I don't know if this has ever been brought up before, since I don't read too many poll-related threads anymore, but I've had this idea for a while now. How about we don't allow nominations lists that are longer than the results list will be? The whole idea of submitting a list is that you want the movies you voted for to end up on the final list. So, in this case, if you submit a list with 1,002 items you don't actually want #1,002 to be on the final list (or else you'd have placed it higher). If you think of it this way it makes no sense to allow lists with nominations longer than 1,001 items (let alone 6,372  ).

We used to do that for a couple of lists, it wasn't really worthwhile. I don't see the big issue with PdA's lists. I do results in a spreadsheet and they add maybe 5 seconds more work than if they were shorter. His lists are ranked, so the lower ranked films get negligible points anyway and if it's easier for him to do it that way then it's fine.
