The VII Academy Awards Challenge 2019

Image

Goal:
Watch as many Academy Award nominated movies from the 1929 awards to the 2019 awards as you can (or want).

Rules:
The challenge lasts from February 1st to February 28th. (your time)
I will post the results 24 hours after the thread have gone quiet in March, but you do have 72 hours from the deadline to post any last viewings and I will update the final standings. (as long I have had this rule nobody has posted after the 24 hour standings though, so if that continue I will just remove the 72 hour rule after trying with a couple more challenges)

Anything over 40 minutes counts as a feature.
60 minutes worth of shorts counts as one entry
There are no mini-series, as all movies nominated for the awards were nominated as movies. They might have been divided later. So regardless of length, all nominated features are 1 point.
You have to post year, or else I wont count them

Competition fairness:
To keep the competiton interesting and fair; if you're currently in the top 3, please post at least bi-daily. Or send me a message how long you'll be offline.
If you're entering the top 5 by only posting once the very last day, you will not be counted in the final standings. If you see your scores are high post earlier in the month as well.
What you are seeing are interesting to the other participants. So posting often will also be recommendations to the other particpants to movies they also might want to see.

Eligible
All features, documentaries and shorts ever nominated by the Academy are eligible for this challenge
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/a+co ... sh_beauty/

There are a few titles through the years that has been pulled from the nominees list through the years.
F.ex. Tuba Atlantic (2010) These are still on the unoffical list above, but please don't see them.

Nothing fancy this time. See the movies that actually won awards to score points.
For this year's winners you will get point if you see them after the show. Not before.
Bonus points: For 5 extra bonus points; see this year's winner (Best Picture) in the last 24 hours before the show. So either bet on your favorite, or see all 8 to be sure. ;)
(You have to post it before the show for it to count)

Records
This challenge has been held 6 times before. Amoreska holds the top score at the moment with 84 points from 2015.
The average participation has been 23. So if we're 23 this challenge as well, you all will need at least 11 points to get into the top 100 all-time leaderboard.
(I'll update that threshold on the 1/4-updates.)

Updated - Top 100 - table on all previous Academy Award challenges (6 previous) I'm putting the rest of them into the table a bit every day
viewtopic.php?p=527142#p527142

And a reminder that we have a Triple challenge running
viewtopic.php?p=552574
For February there are no triples possible though, so keep on posting those doubles

Yes, this is going to be my main challenge for February !

The bonus is not very clear though. No points are to be won by watching the movies nominated this year apart from if you watch the winner which would give 5 points ?

My plan is to watch 200+ films in 28 days so albajos has something to track for this challenge. :P

Absolutely in. I'm only counting winners, and this year's nominees.

Challenge start stats:
Winners: 1129/1234 (don't judge! :) )
91st Nominees 28/52 (plenty of shorts, which I will watch later in the month)

That makes sense... though it does mean that I'll probably put off watching O.J.: Made in America until December's Documentary Challenge.

You will get points for all winners this year if you see them after the show,

So if you see Roma before the show it will only count for the usual challenge. If you see it February 25rd or later (it will probably win at least one) it will count for the bonus challenge as well.

Just specifying that I wouldn't give out bonus points afterwards to movies that hadn't won yet.

Another list that may be helpful:

Turner Classic Movies' February 2019 list (28 of their 31 Days of Oscar):
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/tcm+ ... 19/jlfitz/

One of these years, I will have completed the month before it starts, of this list I have seen 260 of 321. Including the three days in March, I have seen 288 of 354.

1. Dead End (1937) - Picture, Cinematography, Art Direction, Supporting Actress

Image

Released at Sylvia Sidney's career peak (having appeared in Fury and Sabotage one year before), she expectedly shines here, even with some leaden dialogue (going on again and again about her brother being a good kid). Humphrey Bogart is strong too in an early near-lead role as a local gangster. Neither of them unfortunately have that much screen time though as the film keeps focuses on her teen brother and his annoyingly squeaky-voiced friends, none of whom are likeable in the least. Gregg Toland's Oscar nominated camerawork is very nice though.

I'm in. I always watched all the Best Picture Nominees in Feb. regardless. I'm a little confused on that bonus challenge. I probably won't bother with it. Despite my ludicrous number of watches in these challenges, I'm actually not that competitive about them. I just like watching movies. :)

Also is this the first time a Bonus Challenge ever actually contributed to points? Would that mess up maxwelldeux's larger statistics?

From what I understood the bonus challenge is in no way related to the official challenge.

Those 5 bonus points will only be given in the bonus challenge and won't count to the official challenge from what I understand.

Ah, ok. That makes more sense then.

It's only because you only get 4 days to see this year's winners for the bonus challenge, so you'll get a boost if you manage to "guess" the correct one.

In. If I don't just watch everything that comes on TCM this month, I'll probably prioritize:

1 - Best Pic nominees, particularly from the 30s
2 - Best Foreign Film winners
3 - other nominees from the 30s
4 - genre nominees I'm interested in - westerns, musicals, sci-fi

I'd like to think I could see enough to maybe break into the top 10 for the month but given the crazy levels of viewings a lot of people are amassing this year, I think I'll be happy to hit the top 20. My concentration in any case will probably be the 30s challenge this month.

Up the AcademyShow
1. Dead End (1937) - Picture, Cinematography, Art Direction, Supporting Actress

2. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) - Adapted Screenplay, Song, Costumes

Image

Ostensibly based on a published book of short stories, but actually mostly from the direct imagination of the Coen Brothers, this Wild West anthology is a lot of fun. As we see the opening and closing typed lines of each tale, as well as a colour insert, the Coens subtly make their tales more descriptive. It is a very funny film too at the best of times. Not all of the tales are on the same level and the Coens play their best hand early on with the darkly comic first two tales resonating most. The rest though have their points of interest, especially Tom Waits as a gold prospector.

1. Moonlight (2016)
Winner: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay
Nominations: 5 others

I thought this was great - beautiful story. I had no idea what it was about before starting watching it, actually - and I loved the themes and representations throughout. A very good way to kick off this challenge.

If you get the chance check out Barry Jenkins follow up, this year's If Beale Street Could Talk. Easily one of my favorites of the past year, and elgible for this challenge. It's a shame it wasn't nominated for Best Picture this year..

Didn't even realise this challenge was on but started watching some this month anyway... Just have BlacKkKlansman left out of the available nominees for this year since The Favourite and Vice are nowhere to be found right now.

1. Green Book (2018) 6/10
2. Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) 5/10
3. A Star Is Born (2018) 5/10

 The Favourite is still showing theatrically at both Luna and Windsor... and it's a film that I would definitely recommend seeing on the big screen.

Vice is less worthy of a trip of the cinema, but it's also still showing at Luna.
