To limit the length of the list, more than 1 mention or a landing of a #1 ranking are required to be listed. The film poll also required at least 16 points.

Tie breaker is # of mentions followed by the film with higher ranking.

After this poll, we will be returning to our regular Year-by-Year poll for 1948, followed by 1983.

I've bumped The Square down a few spots on my list since the deadline, if I had done that earlier I think On Body and Soul would have made top 10 and the best non-english language film. :(

A lot of love for Phantom Thread here, rightfully so. Surprised Saoirse Ronan is no.2 for Best Actress, didn't think her performance was all that special compared to some of her competitors.

EDIT: Oh, just noticed there are only 5 points separating #2-6 for leading actress, if I had seen The Shape of Water one day earlier Sally would have came second!

Rufus, you're a legend, thank you!

It was actually quite tough to predict what would come out on top and it's really interesting to see the results. Phantom Thread does make sense and I don't mind it being there. Three Billboards is too high IMO and I thought it was more divisive, but I guess it has its passionate fans as well. Great results for The Florida Project, Ghost Story and Summer 1993 (Gloede, your promotion must have helped, good job!) Seven non-English films in the top 25, so soon after the year ended, is pretty good going.

A bit disappointing that the fun satire Ingrid Goes West couldn't even find a place in the top 116 (it only just made my own list, but considering that it's easily available I thought it would at least place), and also that the wonderful cast of Mudbound got so little support in the acting polls.

Still so much to see! I look forward to investigating the titles that I'm unfamiliar with.

What was the Cambodian film that got a mention btw?

Edit: Oh wait, it was blatantly the Angeline Jolie film right? Yeah I need to see that one.

@joachimt: I also watchlisted a several titles myself. I usually am way behind in film when Christmas come around, and every year this poll got me caught up.

@Ivan0716: I think a few people, including me, saw Phantom Thread the final week and just got it over Three Billboards.

@flaiky: Yes, the Cambodia film is the Angelina Jolie film. I haven't see it myself yet, and it is now on my watchlist.

Thanks, Rufus!!

Really interesting to look through the list and make a mental note of so many films that I hope to see someday.

Nice to see that five Irish films garnered a mention!
That's all, folks!

Really confused by the love for Three Billboards and Timothee Chalamet :/

Thanks Rufus.

And then to think that the Phantom Tread is just or not even out in some countries, so could have gotten even more points if the poll was held a month later.

Bria Vinaite is both in leading and supporting actress. Something went wrong there?

This ended up being quite a surprise, but at least I now know that me catching Phantom Thread would not have affected it’s ranking regardless. Good, feel less guilty.

I am incredibly happy Summer 1993 made it as high as it did. Warms my heart, and gives me a lot of what that it will raise even more as (from what I understand) most had not had the time to see it yet, and though I did not check with iCM to confirm it seemed almost everyone who saw it chose to include it. Amazing!

The top 9 being English Language films is somewhat problematic, but expected as most of the other worldwide efforts take some time to be available. Didn’t have as much of a problem as previous years however, and given their popularity I’m shocked Faces Places and Loveless didn’t make the top 10.

Yet to see from the top 50:
1 | 236.0 | 20 | 1 | Phantom Thread (Paul Thomas Anderson) | klaus78, MoTH, perceval, Smoover, XxXApathy420XxX
13 | 131.0 | 8 | 1 | Twin Peaks: The Return (Mark Frost, David Lynch) | Carmel1379, jeff_v
15 | 105.5 | 11 | 3 | Personal Shopper (Olivier Assayas)
21 | 80.0 | 10 | 4 | The Big Sick (Michael Showalter)
24 | 75.5 | 8 | 3 | On the Beach at Night Alone / Bamui haebyun-eoseo honja (Sang-soo Hong)
26 | 68.5 | 5 | 2 | The Other Side of Hope / Toivon tuolla puolen (Aki Kaurismaki)

Will without a doubt seek out the top 3, and likely the latter 3 as well, but not as excited by them. Surprised I had seen so much at the top, but I had seen very little of the following films, which means there is a lot of territory to explore.

Amazing work, Rufus, thank you for hosting.

Thanks for catching that. I forgot to update the leading actress category after combining the scores. Fixed.

Thanks for the results! Definitely an interesting final lineup for sure; only a handful that I haven't seen yet that I really wanted to. Surprising that things like After the Storm, Colossal, The Meyerowitz Stories, and BPM: Beats Per Minute didn't do better, but I guess the latter wasn't so widely available before the end of the poll. And huge "Yay!" to Anya Taylor Joy cracking into the top ten for Best Actress, though it's interesting to see that she made it higher than James McAvoy in the same film. But I ain't complaining. ;)

Maybe if I have time after work later on, I'll add this list to Letterboxd. Unless someone else wants to call dibs before I can get on that, in which case, go for it!

Thanks as always. I guess I still haven't seen all that much great stuff from 2017 - or it was a weaker year (something I'm loathe to admit with less than 60 films seen for sure), but in any case looking at that top 10 I can't get too enthused even if the #1 film was close too my favorite for the calendar year. Only 4 of the top 9 made my list, and #1 is the only film that strikes me as "great". Tops unseen: 10, 11, 13, 16, all apart from Twin Peaks unsurprisingly non-American films that haven't played here yet (and won't, probably, have to do with video or download alas).

In any case lots for me to see yet and lots of effort required on my part to push A Quiet Passion on everybody...
Here's to the fools who dream.

I forgot to mention that I'm really looking forward to watching Personal Shopper. The only reason I didn't rush to watch it for this poll was because I was sticking to IMDb dates. Will try to see it this weekend. Early Assayas was amazing, but Summer Hours and Something in the Air felt a bit more tired and flat. After seeing Clouds of Sils Maria a month ago, and seeing so many critics proclaim it, it is clear I am in for something special.

It's my favourite of his films.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

"Anya Taylor-Joy - Spli" is missing a "t". Otherwise, looks great!

I was going to say I agree with the forum's consensus on #1, but then I realized The Return was being counted, which should have won by a landslide.

Very solid top 10 IMO, although I'm lukewarm on Three Billboards and Dunkirk, and actually don't like Killing of a Sacred Deer much at all. I'd have liked to see Columbus replace one of those.

Hmm, I know of someone else who thought the Twin Peaks miniseries was the best film of 2017... ;)
