iCM Forum World Cup - Season 3 - Round 1 schedule

#1

Post by joachimt » December 17th, 2017, 2:02 pm

Welcome to the schedule of iCM Forum World Cup - Season 3 - Round 1. If you don't know what this is. Read the preparation topic.

Rules in the group phase:
- You must watch all 4 films of a match before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 4 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)
- The top 2 of each group will proceed to the next round.
The winners of the match will be decided using these rules:
  • Lowest average ranking determines the winner.
  • In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
  • In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between three or four movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
  • Still a tie? Fewest #4-votes determines the winner.
  • Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension.
  • Same rules apply to determine second place, of course.
- Don't vote in this thread. Each match will have its own thread according to the schedule.

What's the 2-weeks wait for? Why not extend the deadline instead?

This looks to be a promising Cup indeed. Job well done, guys.
However, I kinda worry that the Romanian entry will suffer from the atrocious bootleg subs, which currently are the only ones available. In fact, I found them so bad that I've been holding off watching this film.

Well, the vast majority here will want the Engish subs, which sadly are vastly lacking. Personally, I'd never nominate a film with machine translated English subs.

Seen 20/48. Group A looks terrifying. And if I'm not wrong, Ingeborg Holm is the oldest film we ever had in the WC.

Well, I do not remember the subs impacting in any way my viewing of the film to be honest. I wouldn't have picked it otherwise.

Fair enough :P Still, if these are the worst examples, they'll do just fine in my opinion. I do understand your concern though, I'd rather have subs with no mistake too.

Let's hope others here feel as forgiving when they encounter passages like:
Do you live at the comandment?

- At the castle.
My husband is the nephew of the castle. It his 300 years old.

Wait a second: it says 2 episodes, 60 minutes each... Are we speaking about different titles?

"It initially aired on web platform Naver TV Cast in a 10-episode format. It was then broadcast by MBC on December 13 and 20, 2015 in two 60-minute episodes"

Since it ays web series I'm guessing the episodes were 10-15 minutes long and then reconfigured

DFAL look the most difficult to predict to me.

There are some other groups that look like they'll be very competitive as well; some lesser-known countries look poised to make it to the second round. I'm already liking this new format, so let's see if my enthusiasm wanes at all over the course of the year.

Don't wanna sound arrogant, but the D group, where I'm manager myself, seems to be the strongest one.

A French classic, a Chekhov adaptation, and best-known African film. I think India seems a bit weaker, but its ratings on IMDb are 7.8 so I wouldn't write it off too early.

Also the group where Japan is... I feel pity for Lebanon and Turkey. Monty's wet dreams of destroying his opponents come true.

Yes, we're looking at a fierce 3-way battle for the 2nd spot, and to victor goes maximum glory.

I LOVE The Lunchbox so I guess it has very little chance. :P

If you had told me beforehand that I would face Iran, Croatia, and Burkina Faso in the first round, I would have said fine. But these look like strong films. And I'm haunted by my first round loss to Croatia last time around.

Question: I see that Buud Yam is a sequel to Wend Kuuni. Is it necessary to see the earlier film to understand/appreciate the sequel?

Why not watch them both regardless

I think you should. Fortunately it's only 67' long, so the diptych does not break the rule of 3 hours maximum.

It is not necessary at all. Actually Buud Yam being an initiation journey and an identity quest where you gradually get to know the protagonist through his encounters and all the places he is visiting, it might even work better without having watched Wend Kuuni.

I guess I'll start seeing some of them. Although I have no interest and know that my choice will lose, I'll feel too guilty being a manager in this and not involved in the other matches.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.
