1. I compagni (1963) 8/10
2. Eltávozott nap (1968) 7/10

I compagni was really wonderful. While having a serious topic it was done lightly - but not so lightly that it lost its stakes or grounded quality. Monicelli treads that line masterfully in all the films I've seen from him.

Eltávozott nap is a great choice and would win many rounds if it was up to me. Not the kind of film I connect with Hungary around that time, it's actually very Italian - I was particularly reminded of Il posto.

1. I compagni [The Organizer] (1963)

2. Eltávozott nap [The Girl] (1968)
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

I don't care much for either film (neither were bad), but I watched The Girl a week ago and I barely remember anything from it except that I was disappointed by the ending... and I've barely watched any movies since then so it shouldn't be that forgetful :'(

1. I compagni 6/10

Eltávozott nap - 8
I compagni - 8

best round in the QF for me, sadly that means being up against a strong opponent (again...)
the humane Hungarian story wins it over the Italian one that is geared more towards entertainment and despite the background of the story, shy's away from true satire (no wonder the Oscars liked it)

2. Eltávozott nap

I liked the Hungarian entry, it's the fifth Marta Meszaros film I've seen and I think she's a very fine filmmaker. Diary for My Children is my favourite so far and this one has some thematic similarities though Diary has more conventional structure where this one has more of a new-wave feel. The psych-rock band at the end were pretty good :)

It was up against tough opposition, Mastroianni in top form and classic Italian cinema stylings, hard to beat.

I compagni - Great performance by Mastroianni, who I didn't recognize at first because of the beard
Eltávozott nap - nicely shot and nice music, but I didn't understand the girl's actions

1. I compagni - 7/10
2. Eltávozott nap - 6.5/10

A solid round. The hungarian film seemed surprisingly western in its approach, not unlike French films of the times.
But the Italian film had me all invested with its leftist politics. And even more with its splendid execution.

1. I compagni 8/10
2. Eltávozott nap 7/10
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Funny match.
The Girl had an abrupt ending, and the movie itself was kind of short.
The Organizer was a bit too long. Great start, but I felt it lost its way at some point.

Just the best film in quarter finals. That said, beavis' choice is the kind of movie, little known and underrated, I can't say a bad word about.

It is Le Corbeau et le Renard, a fable by de la Fontaine. Here's a translation I found online.
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
Master Crow perched on a tree,
Was holding a cheese in his beak.
Master Fox attracted by the smell
Said something like this:
“Well, Hello Mister Crow!
How pretty you are! How beautiful you seem to me!
I’m not lying, if your voice
Is like your plumage,
You are the phoenix of all the inhabitants of these woods.”
At these words, the Crow is overjoyed.
And in order to show off his beautiful voice,
He opens his beak wide, lets his prey fall
The Fox grabs it, and says: “My good man,
Learn that every flatterer
Lives at the expense of the one who listens to him.
This lesson, without doubt, is well worth a cheese.”
The Crow, ashamed and embarrassed,
Swore, but a little late, that he would not be taken again.
Obviously it doesn't sound as good when translated.
