Samurai Cinema Challenge: Ongoing, Unofficial

Just a heads-up for all samurai film lovers: Tatsuya Nakdai is back doing another chanbara! It's called Hatashiai aka Duel (2015) and is based on a story by Shuhei Fujisawa, who also wrote The Hidden Blade, The Twilight Samurai, and Love and Honor.

Synopsis: "Tatsuya Nakadai plays Shoji, an old samurai who merely lives with his brother’s family, sitting in the corner of a room. He is considered little more than a nuisance. When his niece Yoshinari (Nanami Sakuraba) turns down a marriage proposal, the guy doing the proposing is furious and calls on a male to fight in a duel. The old samurai in Shoji comes back to life to defend Yoshinari and as he begins dusting off his old skills he relives old memories."

I can't wait for this one to get an English-friendly release!

OK I want to sign up.

I watched Lady Snowblood the other day and realized that I should watch more in the genre. Also, Uma Thurman's complete butchery of the Japanese language aside, Kill Bill Vol. 1 was even more derivative and amateurish than I had realized.

That's what you get for educating yourself. QT's success is dependent upon his fanbase being kept ignorant of all his cheap copycat moves.

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing you take part here, weirdboy!

Btw, I recently came across this great vid explaining a vital part of samurai cavalry - check it out:

102. Zakurozaka no adauchi AKA Snow on the Blades (2014)

Going into a film with great expectations is a dangerous thing - all too often one is let down. Let's get the positives out of the way first. This film has excellent production values - everything from costumes to sets look terrific. Kiichi Nakai is great in the lead role as a stoic samurai doggedly pursuing his lord's assassin, who is adequately played by Hiroshi Abe. The rest of the cast also do a fine job.

(Gotta love the aged Yagyu sword instructor who shows the street rabble what's what!)
Image

All the worse then that the editing department seemingly was sent on vacation for this film. It's simply overlong, its story not able to sustain momentum after the Sakuradamon Incident is done with. Once our disgraced protagonist is sent on a decade-long hunt for the killers of his lord, the film quickly runs out of steam.

Image

Those hoping for some action are likely to be disappointed - there are only two (rather brief) fight scenes (one at the start and one at the very end).Though they are fun to watch they also feel somewhat like a dojo training session. Anyhow, the film's not concerned with spectacular fights but rather the dramatic change in social conditions for samurai (and how this impacted the samurai mindset) following the Meiji Restoration.

Image

In the course of the film our protagonist learns how one can hold on to one's inner samurai spirit and live a purposeful, true life in a society where samurai are nothing but irrelevant remnants of an abolished feudal past. This is of course all very interesting but unfortunately the film's director doesn't manage to make it a riveting viewing experience. On the contrary, it all feels rather stilted and staid, what with all its speechifying. Though not making it onto my list, it does get honorable mention for having its heart in the right place.

104. Chichibu Suikoden Hissatsuken AKA Living for the Sword (1965)

Image
Here's proof that provided one keeps digging, sooner or later the occasional nice surprise is bound to turn up. Set in the 1880s, the film deals with two master swordsmen from opposing dojos, one of whom is intent on proving the supremacy of his dojo's swordsmanship no matter what. Lots of nice swordplay ensues and the twist during the final fight was really enjoyable.

All in all, I cannot but add this to my master list.

1. Shura 修羅 (Demons) 1971
Very interesting psychological horror in a samurai setting. The direction used some experimental techniques, some of which worked for me, and some of which did not. The use of multiple takes to show different alternatives of the same events was inventive, at least, but in the end I fell like it was not used consistently enough. I think if one were to go that far, it would be perfect to keep it happening whenever we deal with anything from the madman's perspective, and keep the sequences a bit shorter. To get the same impact, we don't need the entire scene playing out two or three times in series; just a few quick glimpses of the scene playing out differently as it progresses. If you do that, you could consistently show these alternate realities whenever your are viewing things from his perspective, and get a consistent sense of "madness" as it plays out.

2. Jusan-nin no shikaku 十三人の刺客 (13 Assassins) 2010
I liked the first two thirds or so of this quite a lot, although I got a bit lost in the long battle sequence at the end. The character and narrative development were great, but I disliked the choreography and planning of those longer sequences, and the supposedly clever planners of this ambush deciding to give up a tactically superior situation by throwing down their bows and jumping into a hand-to-hand melee at nearly 20-to-1 really irritated the crap out of me. As a work of art I suppose it's fine, but that particular aspect went against the character that was so carefully crafted throughout of the man who strategically out-thinks his opponents.

105. Decisive Battle at Kuroda Castle (1960)

Image

This film deals with the Shimabara Rebellion and its aftermath, meaning that there's lots of scheming and evil Christians that need killing by true samurai. Throw Yagyu Jubei and Miyamoto Musashi into the mix and one should think the end result would be perfect chanbara entertainment.
As it turns out it's just okayish matinée fare. Its short running time also contributes to events feeling rushed and characters being underdeveloped. Not one for the big list then.

I watched a few more:

3. Jôi-uchi: Hairyô tsuma shimatsu 上意討ち 拝領妻始末 (Samurai Rebellion) 1967
Wonderful cinematic movie. I enjoyed this one almost as much as I did Seppuku, although they are a bit difficult to compare side-by-side. Mifune and Nakadai once again face each other in a showdown, and once again they do not disappoint.

4. Kakushi-toride no san-akunin 隠し砦の三悪人 (The Hidden Fortress) 1958
I went into this with completely different expectations. I was expecting something a bit more serious, but instead got a comic action-adventure. As usual Kurosawa is a master of the craft, so despite the fact that the characters were so one-dimensional I found the film an engaging and satisfying watch. In fact I believe the deepest character in the movie was Tadokoro, and he barely had any screen time.

5. Dai-bosatsu toge 大菩薩峠 (The Sword of Doom) 1966
Nakadai totally sells his character with his crazy smile and unfocused eyes. Not only that, this has to be one of the best endings I've seen in any movie. It makes me wonder if the ending of Two-Lane Blacktop didn't get some inspiration from this movie, as that leave me with the same feeling when the movie was over.

6. Tsubaki Sanjuro 椿三十郎 (Sanjuro) 1962
First off, I don't know anything about the history of this film's development, so I'm going to ask a stupid question: is Mifune's character here supposed to be the same guy as in Yojimbo? It feels like that is the case, but there are a few differences in the characterization between the films that leave me to wonder. Lots of comedy in this one; the character of the "prisoner" is brilliant, and Kurosawa sets up a hilarious visual joke with the samurai all following Mifune's character in a line as they are sneaking around. This is another fantastic adaptation of the Western genre into the samurai setting.

As you know, Sanjuro is a companion piece to Yojimbo. In both films, Mifune's character is a nameless samurai drifter who refers to himself by age, namely Sanjuro, which means “30-year-old”.) He also tacks on a pseudonymous surname inspired by whatever vegetation he sees close by when asked his name. Consequently, in Yojimbo, he goes by Sanjuro “Kuwabatake” (i.e. “30-year-old mulberry field”); in Sanjuro, he’s Sanjuro “Tsubaki” ( = “30-year-old camellia”).

I do speak a bit of Japanese.

What you are saying is that yes, it's the same character, correct?

In a word, yes. However, the conception of Mifune's character in Sanjuro is quite different from that in Yojimbo. In the latter he's sly and tricky, not deeply wise as shown in Sanjuro. His motives in Yojimbo are selfish, whereas in the companion piece they're mainly altruistic. In Yojimbo he's a master swordsman, in Sanjuro he's mastered himself. There's been a deepening of character taking place - we here have a Sanjuro v.2.0, if you will - which leads one to conclude that the events in Sanjuro take place some time after those in Yojimbo.

Btw, weirdboy, allow me to recommend Chiyari Fuji (1955) and Daisan no kagemusha (1963). I think you'll enjoy 'em both.

Chiyari Fuji will be coming up in relatively short order as it's already on my watchlist.

I will add Daisan no kagemusha.

@RBG: What precisely made you dislike Neko Zamurai? I thought you adored cats...
You do know there's a sequel? It's called Neko Samurai 2: A Tropical Adventure. Wanna review it, too?
And yes, Hitokiri is great. I'll mark you down for two then, ok?

What I'll be doing on my next trip to Japan:

Image
In this unique experience you will learn the techniques of pulling and using a sword from a professional sword fight scene choreographer and will then become the main character in your own samurai fighting scene movie! You will have the chance to "slash" your opponent and have this experience on video!
Your teacher and opponent will be Mr Kenji Sato, a well-known fight scene choreographer and action movie stunt man in Japan. He will pay special attention to teaching you the moves of the samurai, pulling out the sword and using it, as well as the action scenes of fighting with swords. Mr Sato has previously worked on "The Last Samurai", "Biohazard", "47 Ronin", "Rurouni Kenshin" and more!

Just watched Ansatsu by Shinoda, everything I hoped for once again, great cinematography, great action, great plot. He is clearly one of the most reliable Japanese directors of his era, I really don't know why I haven't seen more from him.

Not really. For the purposes of this challenge only proper samurai fare, i.e. historical dramas with (preferably lots of) samurai swordplay, is eligible. That yokai monster film is far from meeting those standards - same goes for stuff like the Samurai Cop, Samurai Cat or the Daimajin films. And please, no anime.

Well, the official samurai list is all over the place. It's not a purist's list in any way and should therefore be approached wearily.

Watched
2. Skull (1927)
This was absolutely awesome. From the amazing action choreography to the depth of emotion you could feel from the performers in the more tense scenes, in substance this film was way ahead of it's time.
3. Tengu-to (1969)
Also very good, if not quite as visionary. Loved Tatsuya Nakadai, as always. Though I liked it a lot, especially the snow scenes, I felt the narrative could have been handled better. Great action as well.

4. Koina no Ginpei: Yuki no wataridori (1931)
Very simple narrative, but a nice watch. Nothing amazing here, credit where credit is due, better than the majority of films I watch. The performances are very entertaining.
5. Kosuzume tôge (1923)
A step down from #4 in every respect but yet still pretty decent.
6. Sôzenji baba (1928)
This one was a huge step up, really great visually and with a slight step up in narrative to boot.

106. Genji Kuro Sassoki: Nuregami Nitoryu (1957)

Directed by Tai Kato, this is the first installment of the Genji Kuro Trilogy. Plotwise the film deals with the quest for two swords that reveal the location of a grand treasure. Our valiant protagonist, played by the youthful Kinnosuke Nakamura, has to contend with three factions - the royalists, the shogunate's men as well as certain dastardly merchants - who all want these swords. Sadly, after a pretty decent start
the film fails to keep up the momentum. The screenplay could have done with some extra effort, characterizations are lacking, the directing is merely workmanlike and much of the swordplay (esp. the melee scenes) is rather uninvolving.
Overall, I find this just run-of-the-mill fare and certainly nothing worth adding to the master list. I certainly had expected more of a Tai Kato film, but considering this was just his second feature I guess he was still learning the ropes.

This, the second outing of Young Genji, was if anything even more pedestrian and humdrum than its predecessor. The hunt for treasure in that one is given an anticlimactic resolution within the first five minutes here, the rest of the film's plot this time around concerns Genji taking on nefarious elements involved in gunrunning. It's all not very excitingly handled and adding stuff like trite platonic love subplots and excruciatingly awful flamenco dancing don't make matters any better. With uninspired acting and directing as well as sloppy fight choreography (that final duel at the end was plain laughable), I'm afraid I won't be seeking out the final installment of this trilogy any time soon. Instead, I'll join Genji Kuro's motely band in saying:

7. Chiyari Fuji 血槍富士 (A Bloody Spear on Mt. Fuji) 1955
Finding the character for "yari" used in the movie title turned out to be a little tough. It appears to be a more traditional form of 矛 (halberd/spear), or at least have the same meaning from what I can tell. The genre for this movie is listed as "drama, adventure" in IMDB, but there sure is a lot of humor in this as well. At least, up until the festival. After that, everything changes and things get much more serious. A man is conned into a contract that exchanges his daughter for a loan, and the con man refuses to give the daughter back even when he is offered the money owed. An infamous tattooed thief is caught, and the reward is a piece of meaningless paper--today's equivalent to a certificate of merit. The master of the house then turns to heavy drinking, and is inappropriately accosted by five other samurai in an inn because he gave his servant permission to sit with him. Both the servant and master are cut down before the titular vengeance is wrought by Gonpachi the spear-bearer. The five samurai are cut down by Gonpachi, but the resolution is a sign of the bureaucratic logic that plagues the country: "No samurai is stupid enough to be killed by a lowly servant in our realm. Therefore Gonpachi is free to go."

The themes expressed in this movie bear a striking resemblance to the hollow daimyo lording over the manor in Seppuku and the empty-headed dogma of "honor" that causes so much strife in Samurai Rebellion, or more recently, 13 Assassins. There is always this inexorable logic driving the villains that equates honor with following orders, rather than being honorable. It is an expression of willful ignorance, and of the sacrifice of reason and human kindness to bureaucracy. These sorts of issues seem endemic to Japanese culture, to the point of being literally how people think and intrinsic to the Japanese language in some respect. Expression of individuality over the "in" group is generally frowned upon, and it is a rare individual, in my experience, that breaks that mold.

8. Dai San no kagemusha 第三の影武者 (The Third Shadow) 1963
Fantastic movie about a man who pretends to be the local feudal lord as a paid double, when events transpire to make him the "real" one in practice. Filled with all kinds of interesting betrayals and twists, these elements are perhaps not quite as good as Kurosawa's more famous take on the samurai lord impostor sub-genre, but there is some great character development along the way that makes it worth sticking through some of the more inexplicable plot twists. The last half of the movie takes on aspects of thriller and psychological horror that could have come straight out of a Sam Fuller production, and even though I knew it was coming, the ending was well executed and satisfying.

I am pretty sure I've seen some other movies that fit the challenge, but sifting those out of all the other movies I've watched over the past months might be a bit tricky.

Today I finally finished the second season of the TV-series Legendary Swordfights of Yagyu Jubei (2005) - seven episodes in all:

Image
108. Sword of Farewells
109. Sword of Tears
110. Sword of Nostalgia
111. Sword of a Fond Father
112. Sword of Admonition
113. Sword of Sincerity
114. Sword of a Samurai

This time around Yagyu Jubei unravels an evil scheme by the Imperial Court against the Shogunate - and yes, Jubei gets lots of opportunities to display his eminent sword skills. The best episode was the last one, mainly due to a surprise duel nicely staged. Overall, this was a decent enough season - fair acting across the board (the lead is particularly good) and ok production value. I did, however, find the first season better.

115. Araki Mataemon - Duel at Kagiya No Tsuji (Yoshiki Onada, 1993)
Image

A by-the-numbers retelling of the famous showdown at Kagiya Corner, and a rather long-winded one at that. Intricate and somewhat boring clan politics take up more than 80 minutes of the film's running time so that when the battle finally commences it's sort of an anti-climax. Instead of the cardboard characters on display here (I mean, they even manage to make someone like Yagyu Jubei dull as dishwater), more time should have been devoted to fleshing out the characters. In the end, it all ends up rather uninvolving. For my money, Kazuo Mori's 1952 version of this story is vastly superior in every way.

116. Sake to onna to yari AKA Wine, Women and Spear (1960)

Image

Directed by the great Tomu Uchida, the film's about a master spearfighter, nicely portrayed by the screen legend Ryutaro Otamo, who decides to withdraw from samurai life following a rather unusual incident. There's no swordplay in this film. Instead we get a couple of fun spear dances, a grim head viewing ceremony and a highly irregular though very memorable seppuku sequence. The film is set in the last years of the Momoyama period, which makes for a welcome break from all the Tokugawa period films. I also liked how Uchida sets out to expose the hollowness of samurai society. My main quarrel with the film is that there's too much screen time devoted to the protagonist's women affairs, which could have made for far more interesting viewing if time had been spent on fleshing out the female characters. I also would have wished for that final glorious lance charge to go on for a bit longer - it was over all too quickly. Ultimately, though not a top-notch Uchida, this is still quite a decent genre film.

Samurai Wolf - 1966

Gosha is seriously underrated .. Goyokin and Hitokiri were absolute favorites of mine..

unlike those two this film has no political message or historical background it wants to convey, it's just pure entertainment ... Full of stylish violence, great sword fights, and a twisty screenplay..

also pretty sure this has to be one of the inspirations to spaghetti westerns..

117-118. Legendary Swordfights of Yagyu Jubei, Season 3, Eps. 1+2 (2005)

A strong start to the final season of this TV-series. A much better storyline and even better characters than in the previous season have my hopes set high for the remaining episodes - might one even dare hope for this season to rival the first one? (However, the new song during the closing credits is goddamn awful!)

119-120. Legendary Swordfights of Yagyu Jubei, Season 3, Eps. 3+4

The dastardly plot to take over the Shogunate thickens and only Yagyu Jubei stands in their way! Though a tad formulaic at times, this is still an enjoyable show, what with each episode's nicely handled fight finale.
