89. Nemuri Kyoshiro: The Man with No Tomorrow (1995)

Image

The third and final installment of the 1990s Nemuri Kyoshiro reboot. I had expected better from veteran director Akira Inoue than this lacklustre effort but I guess he had bills he needed to pay.
Once again the cheese factor is pretty darn high. Fireworks tend to go off whenever Kyoshiro showcases his by now rather tiresome full moon cut. Also, Kyoshiro tends to be surrounded by a multicoloured halo whenever he pulls his master trick.

Image

Then there's the trite flamenco/panflute inspired OST. The storyline this time around is marginally better than the preceding two installments but it really doesn't help much as there's a consistently cheap feel to proceedings. All in all, not one for the books then but rather the dustbin.

90. Sakuradamon-gai no hen AKA The Sakurada Gate Incident (2010)

Image

This film deals with the assassination in 1860 of the most powerful man in Japan, the Shogun's regent, by eighteen samurai representing Imperial Loyalism. They killed him for his alleged irreverence to the Emperor and treachery in having concluded trade treaties with the Americans without the Emperor's blessing. Kihachi Okamoto's treatment of this story in his 1965 film with Toshiro Mifune, Samurai Assassin, climaxed with the assassination. This 2010 effort, in contrast, gets the assassination pretty quickly out of the way and then focuses on precisely what happened in its aftermath as well as what exactly brought the incident about. Thus, this film serves a a nice companion piece to Okamoto's work.

Image

This is very much a talking-heads film, without much action. However, what little there is of action is splendid indeed. In addition to a brief but sweet duel there's the fabulous assassination scene itself, with no skimping on gruesome bloodshed.

Image

Fine production design all around and the acting's good as well. My main quabble with this film is its pacing and muddled storytelling. Specifically, it gets bogged down in slavish attention to historical context/minutiae, which is fine to some degree but when taken to extremes like here becomes tedious very fast. After the assassination itself, the film soon devolves into a dryish history lesson. No detail seems too small to be examined, no historical character must be forgotten and apparently there are plenty of these that need mentioning - every other minute peripheral names are made casual reference to. It's very easy to lose track of who's who here, which makes for a somewhat stressful viewing experience. In presupposing an in-depth knowledge of the historical facts, this film is not particularly gaijin friendly. Maybe it will be better on a second viewing - time will tell. Notwithstanding its problems, this film still was an interesting watch, especially when seen in conjunction with Okamoto's film. The assassination scene alone makes The Sakurada Gate Incident worth seeking out for the samurai film afficionado, just don't expect the rest of the film to have the same flow.

91. Choshichiro's Edo Diaries: The Yagyu Conspiracy (1984)

Image

A made-for-daytime-TV film where none of the actors feel particularly invested in their roles, the plot is threadbare and the few action scenes are sloppily handled. Oh, and did I mention those goddamn awful samurai wigs, the lead actor's one in particular. No, this film is best left forgotten in the dvd bargain bin.

92. Yagyu Renyasai AKA Hidden Story of the Yagyu Clan (1956)

Image

Starring Shintaro Katsu and Raizo Ichikawa, I had my expectations set high as I started watching this one. Alas it turned out not to be the great film I had hoped for. In fact, this is but a run-of-the-mill effort with a trite love story at its center. The acting is mostly of the uninspired kind and the very few fight scenes are short and ineffectually choreographed. On the upside, this film does feature some 'nice' eyebrow styling:

93. Kaze to kumo to toride AKA Three Young Samurai (1961)

Image

On the surface, this film has a lot going for it - directed by genre veteran Kazuo Mori during the golden age of samurai cinema, cinematography by Shozo (Kiru + Daisan no kagemusha) Honda and starring the inimitable Shintaro Katsu (pictured below), who was to make his first Zatoichi film two years later.

Image
The film starts out well enough but it soon devolves into a rather trite story of the love life of three young samurai, who all happen to be infatuated with the same woman. Much of what happens in the film feels overly clichéd and the rather melodramatic orchestral score doesn't exactly soften that impression. As for fight scenes, they're few and far between as well as not particularly exciting.

Though hampered by a weak script, the film is worth watching for shots like the ones below. Sadly, however, the film is not quite list material.

94. Ukyonosuke Junsatsu-ki AKA On Patrol (1963)

Image

The film deals with an incorruptible samurai who's appointed clan inspector by the Shogun himself. It soon transpires that his fellow inpectors are very much inclined to taking bribes and our protagonist soon finds himself in a lot of trouble.

Image

Yes, this film features ninjas, and quite prominently so in the second half. I'm usually not into ninjas as they're often shown as some kind of supermen able to defy gravity at will etc. In contrast, the ninjas in this film are portrayed in a much more subdued - and dare I say it, realistic - way than I've seen in a long time. Thumbs up for that.

There's a plot twist midway which I really didn't care much for - had the story continued along its original track, I'd be more content.
All in all, this film is a middling effort - ok viewing but not quite list material.

It must be said that the AV quality leaves something to be desired - as shown by the above pics. It'd be nice if a better copy became available - I wouldn't be averse to a rewatch if that came to pass.

1.Zoku Miyamoto Musashi: Ichijôji no kettô (1955)

I didn't like the first part, neither this one. Too much romance, I hoped to see Miyamoto Musashi much darker and brutal and that's didn't happened. I am not going to watch part three, sadly this was a horrible adoption of Miyamoto Musashi.

Welcome to the best part of this forum, abdullah. I'm not a big fan of Inagaki's trilogy. Instead you should check out Uchida's five part treatment of the same saga - that's the real deal. Alternatively, have a look at Tai Kato's single film treatment of the Musashi story.

Btw, abdullah, I notice you're from Saudi Arabia. An illustrious participant of this challenge and now sadly an ex- iCM member, Pain, was also from there.
Just a coincidence or are samurai films big in your country?

I will check Uchida's five part, hopefully they are much better.

Just a coincidence. I don't know anyone from Saudi Arabia other than Pain like samurai films.

Razor 2 : Snare

Razor 3 : Who's got the Gold ?

Not pure samurai films, being more into the exploitation genre.
But helped me gain on the Samurai Galloways list , to Top 3.

Have about 7 more from Galloway & Montys List with me......may try soon

:) It seems, that was the main premise around which they tried to make the franchise. And even managed to make a trilogy.

100 Monsters (1968) : Turned out to be quiet Entertaining , like a good B Horror film with a good spread of surreal moments , genuine horror feel in sections and decent acting.
Image

Quick Draw Okatsu (1969) : Predictable story line but a very consistent film. An elegant lady who is also a respectable Dojo teacher goes on a murderous rampage when her father is wrongfully murdered and she raped by corrupt officials.
Lone Wolf Tomisaburô Wakayama also has a cool cameo as a bounty hunter.
Image

Wicked Priest 5 : The Bloody Priest
Not familiar with the series. Just saw this one as it was in the samurai list.
Veteran actor Takashi Shimura also has a good supporting role.

Image

Monty are the initial movies of the Wicked Priest series any good ?

26 to go from the Samurai List , and luckily found all on the Internet.

Monty , any comment on the Mute Samurai series (1973-74), just came across some article on the net. Looks interesting.

Ok then, sushan, so you've had a brush with the dubious taste of Patrick Galloway. I'm afraid none of those three are eligible for the purposes of this challenge: the Yokai film is about yokai, not samurai; the Wicked Priest has absolutely nothing to do with samurai; the Okatsu film belongs to the pinky violence genre, not the samurai one. (Btw, regarding that last one, note the difference in the quality of swordplay between Wakayama and Junky Miyazono. Wakayama operates on a whole different level altogether.)

I've seen the first, fourth and fifth of the Wicked Priest entries and found them all severely lacking. I doubt that the two remaining are any good (though I'll probably see them one day when I've exhausted my film collection).

As for the Mute Samurai, I've seen the first four episodes. It's pretty humdrum stuff and the main story line about evil gaijin is just silly. Why they ever chose to have the protagonist be mute - and especially as it concerns such a screen presence as Tomisaburo Wakayama - is a mystery. It doesn't make for a very compelling character (whose claim to fame is a nifty rearview mirror in his straw hat), that's for sure. No, if I were you, I'd watch the Zatoichi TV-series instead. Only when you're starting to run out of samurai films, should you consider starting on this one.

Ronin gai (1990) : could have been called "Samurai Serial Killers" for its unusual plot. Entertaining samurai adventure starring Yoshio Harada and our very own Zatoichi Shintaro Katsu, in his last film. Had a beautiful leading lady too with a strong character.

Nemuri Kyoshiro 1: Sappocho

Tomisaburô Wakayama also has a supporting role, but no swordplay only judo-karate combo

Image

Nemuri Kyoshiro 9: Burai-Hikae masho no hada

Image

Nemuri Kyoshiro 12: Akujo-gari

A swordsman impersonates Nemuri and goes about killing many

The use of Christianity and combining with devil worshiping and all , is an odd thing in some of these movies.

Overall all an very average watch but for the charismatic lead.

Why go about watching the Nemuri saga in such a haphazard manner, sushan? Also, why didn't you go for the good films of Ichikawa's Nemuri cycle? The ones you should be checking out are #7 and #10. (Remember to always confer with the master list when in doubt, hehe.)
Anyways, I wholeheartedly agree on the devil worshipping aspect of these films - it's what makes the majority of these films silly.

Nemuri Kyoshiro 7 , Sleepy Eyes of Death: The Mask of the Princess (1966) was the first of the series that i saw almost an year back after finding it in your master list. I noticed i forgot to check it on ICM.

Nemuri Kyoshiro 10 i need to check again. I dont remember much from it.

N K 7 had that scarred and bitter princess that i do remember.

Your list is going to be my master watchlist , currently just covering from the official list, though its clear it has many below par stuff. But expecting the Tange Sazen ones(1960,1966) to be good and ones that are common to your list also.

I see. You've just earned yourself an additional check challengewise, bringing your total score up to 31.

As for the Tange Sazen films, the 1960 one is crap but the 1966 one is decent.

Gohatto aka Tabu : Oshima's last film costarring Takeshi Kitano.
An erotic and mysterious tale set in a Militia , where two new recruits join up , but forbidden passions create a dangerous situation.

Visually was good , and narration was interesting

Saw more of the weird flicks from the official samurai list , Samurai Reincarnation and Shogun's Ninja. I really dislike the chinese kung fu kind over the top fantasy elements combined with samurai settings....

Sorry, but this was pure pap. I already regret having wasted time on this drivel. The story is paper-thin - the McGuffin is a stolen scroll of succession everyone wants to get their hands on. Don't be fooled by that for this is essentially a soap opera romance with plenty of unconvincing love birds thrown into the mix. For good measure there are also some plaintive - and rather bland - Misora Hibari song routines. There are a few fight scenes but they're all in the way of ineffectually-waving-sticks-in-the-air-while-yelling-loudly- to-hide-the-stupid-look-of-it-all type of routine. Oh, and then there's the two leads, Azuma Chiyonosuke and Nakamura Kinnosuke, delivering the blandest of bland performances, which is pretty much in line with what the rest of the cast come up with. The only positive thing about experiences like this is that one appreciates the really good chanbara films that much more. To truly know the bright lights of cinema heaven one must first know the various darkly lit circles of cinema hell, hehe.

Hamming it up the Japanese way

I'm happy to hear that, neffie. You'll turn into as rabid a lover of samurai cinema as noir before you know it.
Btw, I hope you're watching the Criterion releases - the image there is just stellar. I did a comparison with my old R2J releases and I was shocked at how poor the image was (and I had been thinking it was real good - but not after getting the Criterions).

For those of you who want to experience the wrath of samurai women, here's the whole docu mentioned above. Man, these chicks could put up a fight!

I didn't expect much from this obscurity as its director, Junji Kurata, hasn't impressed me in the past but boy, is it sweet to be proven wrong!

How I felt as I realized I was in for a treat!

This is a samurai film that does most everything right.

It has a strong cast, a fab soundtrack, a sweet story (loved the whole pirate plot), excellent photography and the fight scenes are suitably grisly and overall very nice to behold.

A sleeper gem for sure - discovering films like this is what makes it all so worthwhile. Added to my top list!

97. Hono-o no shiro AKA Castle of Flames (1960)

Image

An early effort by veteran director Tai Kato, who was Kurosawa's chief assistant director on Rashomon. Though applying the lessons learned from his time with Kurosawa in this 1960 Hamlet adaptation, Tai Kato fails to deliver anything approaching the mastery of Kurosawa's 1957 venture into Shakespeare territory. Castle of Flames is but a workmanlike production that - notwithstanding a few good elements - on the whole sadly doesn't succeed in engaging this viewer.

Great discover for Yagyu Chronicles 9 assassins sword, that's excellent. A lot of 1964 films are similar. This one reminds me some Kudo films and the Dojo yaburi films.

98. Samurai Justice Special - Assistance in a Duel (2004)

Image

As this TV special was directed by genre veteran Akira Inoue, my hopes were up going in. However, it soon turned out to be a true potboiler. Though the mise-en-scène is beautiful, it's missing that lived-in feeling. Instead it all seems strangely sanitized, like events are taking place in some Japanese samurai theme park instead of the real thing. The film also suffers from a whole lot of wooden acting - the two young leads in particular aren't able to emote at all. Anyhow, it was fun to see Meiko "Lady Snowblood" Kaji again but sadly she's not given much to do - why didn't they for example at least give her one sword scene? (Instead that honor befalls a woman whose skill is nowhere near Meiko's.) As for the swordfights, they all look hokey and poorly staged - again that theme park feel. Oh, and then there's the awful music permeating the entire film - some bizarre schmalzy elevator music that is just completely out of place and effectively ruins the mood of every single scene. My advice if you ever come across this film is to give it the widest possible berth.

@lim: Glad to see you liked Yagyu Chronicles 9. It is a film that deserves a much larger audience so be sure spread the word among your French samurai buddies. :)

Tu rêves. I've absolutely no audience in France. Half ronin, half ninja, 100% Alf guilty. There's a lot of samurai films lovers, but they seem to never use Internet, or IMDb, or iCM. Internet is for Facebook generation. Just watch whatever you want (and not only samurai films, as I saw some of your favs recently) and I will go deeper in your lists. But don't expect people from around the world to explore more obscure or samurai films, cause people want to be popular, therefore watching what is popular, not the good, but the stream of shit that they ask nothing else to be part of. Keep climbing along the cliff, I'm just behind. But behind be, nothing. One rope, no hope. Nope.

"Ope...rator! operator! Lim no answers anymore at the other end of the line!"
"He just hang himself. Do you want to watch another film, sir?"
"Yes. As usual please. A samurai film. And find me another thread!"
"Of course, sir. Do you expect someone else at the other end?"
"One rope, no hope. Nope."

(scene from a classic Turkish film, not a samurai film)

99. Miyamoto Musashi (1944)

Image

I've seen more than 10+ Musashi films and this one is lower-tier for sure. Directed by a reluctant Mizoguchi as part of the Japanese war effort, it's obvious that he didn't put his heart into it. We never get a feel for what makes the characters tick, they're just cardboard cut-outs. With a runtime of only 53 minutes, the Musashi character isn't allowed room for the spiritual growth that is the essence of his being. Instead he spends most of his time blabbering on about the importance of never hesitating in battle and how praiseworthy (self-)sacrifice is; after incapacitating the enemies of this one woman, he even urges her to kill them - pretty sure the government propagandists loved that). The camera work is unimpressive, the sword choreography has a stiff kabuki-like feel - in fact, it's so hokey that one never believes for one second that these guys are master swordsmen, Musashi least of all. The first half of the film is a drag, things pick up somewhat in the second act with Musashi's famous duel with Sasaki Kojiro on Ganryu Island. However, Mizoguchi here departs from convention in his depicting post-duel Musashi taking the time to respectfully salute Kojiro's party before leisurely retreating. All in all, I cannot recommend this to anyone but the Mizoguchi completist. For any samurai film lover wanting to explore the Musashi story, I'd strongly recommend Tomu Uchida's take on the character instead.

100. Kojiro tsubamegaeshi AKA Kojiro's Turning Swallow Cut (1961)

Image

Starring a Shintaro Katsu on nice form as Sasaki Kojiro, this pleasing film deals with how the famed swordsman came to develop his signature sword style, including how his uncommonly long katana originated. The cast is uniformely strong and there are lots of fun duels to behold (I esp. enjoyed the one with the woman taking revenge for her dead master on an entire dojo). With the exception of a rather misplaced love story, the film - though lighthearted - is a very enjoyable take on the early career of Kojiro and I have therefore no other choice than to add it to my top list.

101. Kengo nitoryu AKA Swordsman of the Two Sword Style (1956)

The Japanese sure do love their Miyamoto Musashi films and the director of this one, Sadatsuga Matsuda, already has three entries on my samurai film list. Sadly, this one will not make a fourth. Rather unconventionally, the film opens where most other Musashi films end, namely with his famous duel with Sasaki Kojiro. Once that's out of the way, the rest of the film largely deals with Musashi being pursued by the vengeful widow of Kojiro and various other parties bent on his destruction. Apart from pacing issues, the film suffers from trite melodrama in the form of Oko, Musashi's love interest, who's given way too much screen time.

Far too much of this drivel:

Far too little of this:

I generally enjoy Chiezo Kataoka's performances but here he simply feels too old (during shooting he was 53)to give an effective portrayal of Musashi, who in real life fought Kojiro at the age of 30. Though Kataoka knows how to strike commanding sword poses, his fight choreography is too theatrical by half for him to be a convincing Musashi.

Let's vogue!

Overall, this film is but a run-of-the-mill effort. For a more dynamic and engaging interpretation of the post-Kojiro Musashi, instead seek out Tomu Uchida's 1971 film, Shinken shôbu.
