I'm thinking about these 5:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055188/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295442/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169614/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0198554/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0198506/
Edit: The sixth film in this series is not really a contender as it was made after Uchida's death in mid-1970, and as such only got half-finished, if that.

72. Miyamoto Musashi (1961)

Image

So I finally got around to watching the first installment of Tomu Uchida's five-part film series on the exploits of Japan's most famous swordsman, a series that to this day remains criminally unknown and underseen here in the West. Whereas the Inagaki series is the one that is known (and loved) in the West, it's the Uchida series that is held in the highest regard in Japan. Incidentally, this film is tied for 33rd place (alongside Ozu's The Only Son) in a 1989 poll of the 150 greatest Japanese films of all time.

With that in mind, I'm happy to report that this film - detailing Miyamoto's transformation from an aggressively (over-)confident and brawling youngster into someone who (through chastisement and a three-year long solitary study of the classics of Asian philosophy) emerges as a far more spiritual being - is indeed a solid one (and far better than the corresponding Inagaki film). It's a more fleshed out take on the story than any other version of this tale that I've seen (and it's been a few...) As for fights, don't expect too much, the focus here is on the spiritual awakening of Musashi.
Kinnosuke Nakamura is great in the lead role - he really manages to convey the character of Miyamoto. I just loved his burning intensity in the closing shot - Mifune, eat your heart out! What's more, the supporting cast, the set design as well as the score are uniformly great.
All in all, this is an easy rec for any samurai film lover.

Oh, and here's some nice trivia. Do you guys spot who this guy is?

73. Miyamoto Musashi: Hannyazaka no kettô AKA Miyamoto Musashi: Showdown at Hannyazaka Heights (1962)

With his second installment, Uchida continues the strong momentum set by his first film. In this one, Musashi encounters the famous warrior monks, experts in the noble art of the spear. These guys don't mind showing off their skill but guess what happens when Musashi comes along...

Image

All in all, it's a pleasurable watch from start to finish. Even the kid actor portraying Musashi's apprentice does a fine job. Can't wait for the next one!

74. Miyamoto Musashi: Nitôryû kaigen AKA Two-Sword Fencing Is Born (1963)

Yet another nice effort by Uchida. In this film Musashi has his first encounter with Sasaki Kojiro, played with just the right amount of swagger by the "Clint Eastwood" of Japan, Ken Takakura.

Image

The more I see of this series, the clearer it is why Uchida's take on the legend of Musashi is the most cherished one in Japan.

Rurouni Kenshin : Kyoto Inferno

Pretty decent followup , has the advantage of a good production hence visuals and set pieces always stay strong (liked the villains introductory sequence) .....most of the action sequences too are done well... Again i was ill informed didnt know its not the end but another one is to follow, Overall satisfying and paves way for the last part which i am certain will have far more action..

Shura (1971)

This was bloody dark , and pretty good. Almost a horror film.

A samurai deceived by the women he loves , gets blinded with rage and goes on a murdering spree ....

Was lucky to find the Tomu Uchida's five-part Miyamoto series on regular
torrent site . So another good set added to my future list...

Great to have you back, Pleb. Here's a little something to spur you on in the quest to catch up with me, namely a 70s samurai tv-series produced by and starring none other than Tomisaburo Wakayama and Shintaro Katsu:

Get the rest of the eps here

Oh, and here's a breakdown of the series

61. Zatôichi nidan-kiri / Zatoichi's Revenge (1965)

Image

Not the best Zatoichi film I have seen so far, but nothing near the worst. The real problem with this installment for me was how silly some of it was, along with a dual I was looking forward to that was completely blown off. Thankfully this movie was saved by a long fight scene near the end, and a few good one liners, keeping Zatoichi's Revenge from being bad.

76. Miyamoto Musashi: Ganryu-jima no ketto (1965)

Image

The fifth and final film of Tomu Uchida's Miyamoto Musashi saga, and what a splendid installment this is! Lots of nice touches throughout and rock-solid acting from even the smallest bit player makes this a winner through and through. Why this version of the story is less well known in the West than the Inagaki/Mifune three-parter is really a shame as Uchida's version is by far the superior. I urge every lover of samurai films to watch this series asap.

77. Jôiuchi: hairyô zuma shimatsu (2013)

Image

This made-for-tv copycat remake of Kobayashi's Samurai Rebellion is a real stinker. It adds nothing worthwhile and what there is on show is subpar in every way to the majestic original. Most every scene is accompanied by schmaltzy elevator music, efffectively ruining any emotional and dramatic impact. The acting is mostly of the perfunctory type - the one highlight was Meiko Kaji of Lady Snowblood fame.
All in all, I'm sorry I wasted time on watching this travesty.

78. Shundo AKA Bushido (2013)

Image

This film is the directing debut of Yasuo Mikami, who also financed it. His reason for getting into the film business was that as the old-style jidaigeki dramas he enjoys are not being produced today, he decided to make one of his own. A tough task but he does come out of it very well indeed - this really is a fun ride.

Image

Thankfully, in contrast to many modern samurai films, there are no cliched J-pop ballads haunting this work. In fact, there's precious little music, just the occasional taiko drums can be heard.
The color scheme is muted - at times reminiscent of a b&w film, which only serves to underline the film's spiritual connection with the glory days of chanbara.

On the acting side, in addition to such well-knowns as Takehiro Hira (from Miike's Harakiri) and Yuki Meguro (of Shogun fame), the cast members acquit themselves well.

The story may be nothing new but it is nicely handled. As for the fight scenes, I have no complaints; special mention must go to the terrific melee finale - I've always had a soft spot for samurai fights/duels in mighty snowscapes and this one doesn't disappoint!

Image

All in all, solid genre fare and fun for the whole family.

And now for an upcoming release I'm looking forward to, namely "Revenge of the Pomegranate Tree Hill".
It's about a samurai retainer whose lord is assassinated. Instead of allowing himself to commit seppuku after the loss of his lord, he spends the next 13 years tracking down his lord’s killers.

79. Hana no Byakkotai AKA The Great White Tiger Platoon (1954)

Image

Imagine my delight when this film was made available on youtube a few days ago. Sadly, it's not one for the books.
This is a second-rate melodrama, with sloppy directing, no notable acting to speak of and the fight sequences are just shoddy shootouts. Though it was fun seeing a young Raizo Ichikawa (pictured above) and Shintaro Katsu - supposedly this is his debut role - (pictured below), neither get much to work with here.
Image

Btw, good to know that Japanese school teachers may wear swords in the classroom - now that's teaching to my taste, hehe!

80. Kurama Tengu (1928)

Image

Terrific silent about Kurama Tengu, a Japanese folk hero who fought on the Emperor's side during the Bakumatsu. The lead actor, Kanjuro Arashi - one of the top stars of chanbara - was a skilled Japanese classical dancer, which really shines through in his performance as Kurama - in the fight scenes his fluid and graceful moves are a constant joy to behold. In this respect it's interesting to bear in mind the historical importance of Kanjuro Arashi's contribution as he pioneered the use of Japanese classical dance elements in chanbara action sequences. On a sidenote, I was quite impressed with Kurama Tengu's ability to fight scores of opponents while carrying his child protégé under one arm:

Image

The story takes place in 1862, effectively in the midst of a historic struggle over Japan's future. The issue over who will rule Japan, the Shogunate or the Emperor, results in violent clashes between the adherents of each faction. The hero of those rebelling against the reigning Tokugawa Shogunate during this time was the samurai Kurama Tengu. This film is yet another part of the mythos building around him.

The action sequences come hard and fast in this film, be they violent fights, daring escapes or suspenseful chases.
Image

I also enjoyed the frequent touches of comedy, like the slapstick-like pursuit sequence early on. Oh, and I just loved the gleeful
facial expressions as Kurama Tengu's supporters succeed in fooling their pursuers, hehe:

Image

It also doesn't hurt that Kurama Tengu's foes are rather colorful, like this gun-toting beauty:

Image

Kurama Tengu was popular with kids as he had a reputation for saving child street acrobats from being hurt by evil people. In the film, Kurama enjoys the help of a charming urchin during several key moments, like here whilst attempting a prison break:

Image

All in all, a very nice film experience, which easily earns a spot on my list.

81. Chukon giretsu - Jitsuroku Chushingura (1928)

Directed by the "Father of Japanese cinema", Shozo Makino, this film purports to tell the real story of the famous Ako incident, better known as Chushingura. As opposed to the original kabuki play, this film is set in the actual time period these events went down and it uses the real names of the people who were actually involved. Makino's ambition was to bring as much realism as possible to the depiction of events.

Image

Makino wanted this film to be the crowning achievement of his long filmmaking career and indeed it was a big success upon its release.

Image

Sadly, the film does not survive in its original form as portions of the final act (the revenge scene) were lost in a fire accident during the editing process (placing combustible film too close to a hot lightbulb is never a good idea).
Consequently, the missing scenes were eventually replaced with similar images from a Chushingura film directed by his son, Masahiro Makino.
Though this has the effect of bringing a somehow rushed feeling to proceedings, I never felt it took away from what had come before.

This is how a proper samurai house search is done:
Image

I've seen my fair share of Chushingura films (almost a sub-genre in its own right) and Makino's take on the story is
definitely among those worth watching. I particularly enjoyed how he portrays the fateful final meeting between Lord Asano and Lord Kira, as well as its immediate aftermath.

On a sidenote, the hairstyle of the kid to the right in the pic below really should come back in style:
Image

All in all, a fascinating cinematic treasure that any samurai film aficionado should watch.

Yes, this is G.I. Samurai (1979).

Though the film is as cheesy as it gets (and the numerous awful country/blues/disco tracks performed in Engrish to lameass montages really adds to the trash ambience), I must admit that the final battle scene is somewhat a guilty pleasure. I've always wondered how sengoku period samurai and ninja would fare against a modern-day army unit - now I finally know.

Personally, I won't be counting this one for challenge purposes as I'm too much of a samurai cinema purist for that.

Time for director Tomu Uchida's final instalment to his Musashi Miyamoto series. Sadly, Uchida died before he finished shooting this film so what we have here
is but a fragment of Uchida's intentions but all the same a surprisingly coherent one.

There are no side stories here - no romantic subplots, no rabid grannys chasing Musashi - instead everything revolves around Musashi's encounter with Baiken Shishido, a master of the kusarigama. To me, this change of pace serves the film quite well, especially given its unfinished state. Freeze frames are used throughout to tell the innermost thoughts of characters - I'm not sure whether this was what Uchida himself wanted or if it's been added in post-production. Anyway, it somehow works (apart from the final freeze frame, which really leaves one hanging.)
In previous installments there always was this epic feel to proceedings as Musashi was progressing to his final meeting with his ultimate nemesis, Sasaki Kojiro. This time around there's but a grimy and sordid tale, Baiken being simply another hurdle Musashi must overcome on his path to true insight into the way of the sword. Still this is a quite decent post-script to the saga that effectively links up with what happened to Musashi at the Battle of Sekigahara at the start of the first film.
Added to the big list forthwith.

83. Nemuri Kyoshiro (1989)

Image

A reboot of the popular Nemuri Kyoshiro saga, though thankfully this time around there's no mention of the Satan worshipping ex-Christians that so plagued the original series. No, in this outing Kyoshiro is out to save no less than the shogun-to-be. Directed by Tokuzo Tanaka, who's responsible for one of my all-time fav Nemuri Kyoshiro films, I went in hoping this film would prove itself worthwhile. Sadly, my hopes were soon dashed by a too simplistic plot, uninspired acting, lazy directing and excruciatlngly sappy theme music (not to mention the overly melodramatic strings that begin playing whenever a woman begs Kyoshiro to have his way with her, which is often and which he always nobly refuses.
Image

Also, why didn't they spend more money on proper samurai wigs for this show?
Tamura Masakazu plays Nemuri Kyoshiro (and interestingly, he was also involved in Nemuri Kyoshiro: Fylfot Swordplay (1969)) and he does an ok job of it were it not for him having to fill the boots of Raizo Ichikawa, whose charisma is sorely missed here.
All in all, this is a middling daytime samurai tv-film, no more.

Rurouni Kenshin : Kyoto Inferno

So I watched the first 30 minutes before the nausea this silly film induced in me made me switch off. Pretty boys (and girls) duke it out in the fakest way ever. And don't get me started on that super-cartoonish villain. Sorry, I need to go puke now.

85. Nemuri Kyoshiro: Conspiracy in Edo Castle (1993)

The second installment in the Nemuri Kyoshiro reboot actually started out quite well and for a brief moment I thought veteran director Akira Inoue, whose 1966 Nemuri effort I quite like, would manage to pull off a decent film. Boy, was I in for a let-down! Nemuri's troubled parentage is a big part of this film, so once again there's evil Satan-worshipping ex-Christians; the scene in which a supposedly Dutch doctor is fondling the breasts of a crying Japanese woman while he's chanting "stimulation" over and over again is among the cheesier I've witnessed for some time. Then there's the very disturbing depiction of rape as something which the victim deeply and truly enjoys - in fact, the woman who Nemuri rapes
falls head over heels for him. And to top it all, Nemuri unwillingly feels an attraction towards this woman as she looks like his mother. Oh, and let' s not forget the charming portrayal of homosexuals
as beings that are rotten to the core. When Nemuri's big duel finally ensues, his wielding the sword not only sets off lightning bolts, it fills the air with gold dust. And all this is accompanied with ultra-cheesy space swooshing sound effects. In sum, there's so much wrong with this film that its one redeeming feature, a very catchy theme tune, is not enough to save it from being an utter trainwreck.

86. Cho kosoku! Sankin kotai AKA Samurai Hustle (2014)

Image

What a nice surprise this turned out to be! Set to the 18th century, the film deals with a bunch of likeable goofball samurai that - as a result of an evil plot by a Shogun councillor to topple their clan - have to make a journey in record time back to the Shogun in Edo in order to prove their innocence. To make it through they have to use all their smarts as several obstacles are put in their way.

Image

The plot may be flimsy, the characters may be caricatures but that's all part of the package - this film doesn't aim to be anything other than what it is, namely a low-key good-natured comedy, and it succeeds very well indeed at that. With nice acting, topnotch production design and no irritating J-pop ballads in sight, I was soon won over by the disarming charm of this effort.

Image

Notwithstanding some use of wire-fu (ninjas are sometimes involved), the fight scenes are on the whole well-executed and quite fun to watch even for a purist like myself.

Image

If this film doesn't put a smile on your face, nothing will. A most pleasing experience that I have no choice but to include in my top list.

87. Makai tensho AKA Samurai Reincarnation (Kinji Fukasaku, 1981)

Image

Someone once fittingly described this film as "a two-hour crash course in Japanese history - if it were taught by the guys who created Power Rangers and packaged into a remake of Bill and Ted." If one thinks that sounds great, one' s going to have a helluva good time watching it. I, on the other hand, was not entirely convinced by this Fukasaku extravaganza.

A faithful translation of the title would be Demon Reincarnation and in this crazy fantasy film some of Japan's most famous historical figures are being reborn as just that, demons. This infernal band is composed of Miyamoto Musashi (played by Ken Ogata), Amakusa Shiro, the spear-wielding monk Inshun Hozoin, Yagyu Munenori (played by Tomisaburo Wakayama), master ninja Ishikawa Goemon and the famous samurai woman Garasha Hosokawa. Facing them (and thus tasked with saving Japan) is master swordsman Jubei Yagyu (played by Sonny Chiba).

The evil mastermind looks like a Kiss concert escapee:
Image
It must be said that there is a definite kabuki-like feel to proceeding (esp. at the start), which may also account for the somewhat execessive use of make-up for several of the main characters. I still found it disconcerting and annyoing in equal measure, hehe.

More bad guy:
Image

My fav moment is a nicely choreographed fight in which demon Musashi gets his life-long dream fulfilled, namely fighting Yagyu Jubei himself:
Image
Interestingly, Fukasaku pays tribute to fellow director Tomu Uchida by using clips from Uchida's famous 1960s Musashi series to recount the career of the famous swordsman.

Although I'm not a big fan of the samurai horror/fantasy genre, this film was mildly entertaining in parts and inventive staging helps it succceed in conveying the necessary otherworldly feel - just check out the flaming inferno of a finale to see what I mean.

Ultimately, however, I cannot endorse this effort wholeheartedly as it just becomes too much of everything - what with all the ghost resurrecting and wildly floating severed demon heads, hehe.

88. Daredevil in the Castle (Osaka jo monogatari) (1961)

Image

I had high hopes for this film as it's directed by Hiroshi Inagaki and starring Toshiro Mifune. Once again my expectations were dashed - this is not Inagaki at the top of his game. Its main drawback is a story that's too convoluted for its own good - keeping track of bad vs good guys turns confusing pretty quickly as events escalate. As for Mifune, though not firing on all cylinders like he did under Kurosawa, he's still a lot of fun to watch here as he turns in an enjoyable performance as a hellraising brawler of a character.

My fav bad guy:

All in all then, an average effort saved by the acting chops of Toshiro Mifune.
