121-122. Wakasama samurai torimonochô AKA Case of a Young Lord 1 + 2 (Kinnosuke Fukada, 1956)

A samurai detective and his helpers investigate a mysterious case involving a precious heirloom gone missing. This was real light-hearted entertainment, what with its musical numbers (that children's choir at the end was a bit OTT), silly comic relief and dance-like sword "fights". More children's matinée fare than true chanbara, these films failed to strike a chord with me.

125. Case of a Young Lord 3 (Kinnosuke Fukada,1956)

A slight step up from the two preceding films in this samurai detective series. Thankfully, this time around the comedy element is toned down (gone is the young lord's silly moustachioed assistant) and there's just a brief song interlude. The swordplay choreography - though stilted and quite theatrical - is of its time and as such is serviceable. However, I still don't care much for the protagonist - he's an arrogant know-it-all whose trademark boyish laughter is damn annoying.

9. Genroku Chûshingura 元禄 忠臣蔵 (The 47 Ronin) - 1941 - Kenji Mizoguchi
The quality of the transfer on my copy was bad enough that I found it distracting, so I don't think I gave this one a fair shake. As a dramatic take on a famous historical event it fell into the same trap that I think many such movies do, of spending just a bit too much time "getting things right" historically at the expense of a smooth narrative flow. The more recent 13 Assassins seems to have some very similar scenes, which I assume is deliberate, but I haven't read much about either film so perhaps my impression is just fantasy.

10. Ninjô kami fûsen 人情紙風船 (Humanity and Paper Balloons) - 1937 - Sadao Yamanaka
Excellent movie. I'm inclined to coin the phrase "Edo neo-realist" to describe this movie, because the rawness of it reminds me so much of Vittorio De Sica's work.

126. Dojo yaburi (1964) - rewatch

Based on Yamamoto Shugoro's novel After the Rain, which also gave birth to Ame agaru (1999). In contrast to the latter film, this 60s outing boasts lots more swordplay. And though the 90s film may be said to be the more polished effort, the sheer gritttiness of the 60s version in combination with a charming performance by Nagato Isamu as master swordsman and devoted husband have me won over.Tanba Tetsuro's presence sure doesn't hurt either. All in all, this film was as enjoyable the second time around as on my first visit.

only thing that left me unsatisfied is the ending.. then found out there are other movie adaptations of the novel

I was rather underwhelmed by that trilogy. In my view, Chiezo Kataoka - apart from being too old for the role - didn't succeed in portraying the demonic madness of Ryunosuke. I was also pretty annoyed with the inclusion of the adventures of Muku, the ninja dog.

If you want to explore the Ryunosuke story further, I suggest you try out Kenji Misumi's Satan's Sword trilogy instead. Starring Raizo Ichikawa, this series adhere more closely to the original serial novel than both Uchida's trilogy and Okamoto's film. Check out my brief reviews of the series here: 1, 2,

However, to me, Okamoto's film is easily the greatest of them all in terms of artistic merit. Then again, Nakadai firing on all cylinders in a career-best performance is hard to beat.

Visually stunning, mostly dialogue-based (there are only a few sword fights, but they are very well shot) and thought-provoking. The film is mostly tragic and cruel for its characters...

Clocking in at a mere 67 minutes, this chanbara is super thin on plot but heavy on action. In fact, it features a seemingly endless succession of fights, in all varieties - including smokebomb-throwing, flying ninja and giant MMA monks crushing samurai shieldmaidens.Sadly, the fight choreography and its editing is generally sub-par. And yes, a rockabilly/sleazy 80s porn soundtrack somehow further ruins any enjoyment - at least it did for me. Not one for the books then.

East Meets West (1995)

I generally like Okamoto's films but this one was so bad I had to force myself to sit through it.
Not only does the film suffer from an abundance of wooden acting and poorly fleshed-out characters, it also features lots of ineffectual comedy - ranging from an oversexed silly ninja to milk-swilling wanna-be-outlaws. Then there's the stereotypical - and rather offensive - portrayal of Native Americans - yodeling Indian chiefs and easy-to-bed squaws, anyone? Additionally, let's not forget the language issue. Evidently, Okamoto did not have the slightest feel for directing dialogue in another language - throughout the delivery of the American actors is extremely stilted. And don't get me started on the English dialogue attempted by the Japanese cast. As for having the main Japanese character team up with an obnoxious American kid (who turns out to have a preternatural ability with the katana), let's just say it was a spectacularly ill-conceived idea.

All in all then, East fails to meet West. This poor excuse for a film I for one will not be watching again - unless I get a huge monetary compensation, hehe.

127. Ten Duels of Young Shingo: Part 1 (1981)
Toshiro Mifune is the biggest drawing card here but he appears only briefly and then not very memorably - I guess Toshiro just needed a quick pay day. The film deals with the illegitimate son of the shogun and his journey to reunite with his father. Sadly, the story is done in a forgettable fashion and the actor playing our eponymous hero lacks screen presence.

A slight step up from its predecessor but not by much.The fight choreography is a bit better than last time round but the film hurts badly from the inclusion of silly ninja stunts. Once again the mischievous Benten Boy steals the show.

The first installment in the Yagyu Chronicles series turned out to be nothing but cheap matinee fare. The acting is so-so and the fight scenes are wholly unexciting. Even the final showdown is nothing but a couple of silly, gravity-defying ninja jumps. Not much to write home about then.

131. Obozu tengu AKA Tengu Priest (1962)

Starring none other than Chiezô Kataoka as a ronin out to slay the mad samurai lord who killed his father, this film quickly turned out to be yet another run-of-the-mill effort. Apart from being utterly devoid of drama or suspense, there are feeble attemps at humour (yes, I'm referring to the ragtag entourage of vagrants the protagonist has invited to live at his house) and the fight scenes are all of the melee stick fight variety.
I won't be revisiting this film any time soon, that's for sure.

I'm afraid not. Zatoichi is a masseur, not a samurai. Also, as he loves to gamble, Ichi is also considered a yakuza. Consequently, the Zatoichi movies fall loosely into the ninkyo-eiga genre.

132. Hatashiai AKA A Duel Tale (2015)

I was pretty stoked about watching this as it stars none other than the legend himself, Tatsuya Nakadai. Here he plays an aged samurai whose ill-fated brush with love has doomed to an existence as heyazumi (lit. on who is allowed to occupy a room), remaining in his natal household at the mercy of his brother. He then regains purpose in life through his beloved grandniece, who needs rescuing from an arranged marriage deal gone sour.
It's a treat watching Nakadai back in samurai garb again and he sure does the best he can with the material he's been given to work with.

Sadly, the the director is not up to the task. His single-minded insistence on giving the film an overly maudlin tone and his penchant for clichés effectively sink the entire effort. Also, having Greensleeves play on repeat throughout was a singularly bad decision.

Okamoto's wonderful Sukedachi-ya Sukeroku (2001) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339748 remains Nakadai's best samurai role in recent years.

Bakumatsu zankoku monogatari aka Brutal Story at End of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1964)

It started well.. but became to drag in the middle.. good finish though

I liked Mifune (Shinsengumi 1969) version over this one

Digitally restored by the National Film Center of Japan, the surviving reel of Chokon (1926) - https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/chokon/ - was just as glorious as I expected. These 12 minutes of intense samurai fighting earns itself an instant spot on my list.

some of them were pretty good...others i felt completely rehash of previous movies

Actually, I haven't seen that series. I'd be willing to give Kinnosuke Nakamura Yorozuya a chance but somehow I doubt that Tomisaburo Wakayama's performance as Ogami Itto can ever be surpassed. From what I hear the tv-series is far more subdued fare than the movies, which as you may know are rather gory. Apparently, the fights in the tv-series are completely bloodless, with no lopped off body parts or geysirs of spurting blood - both of which to me are essential parts of the Lone Wolf formula. Still, if I manage to get hold of the tv-series, I'll give it a go.

Btw, if you plan on watching this beware that
Kinnosuke's got enough make-up on to pass as a drag queen. There's also the ongoing problem of the Itto wig looking like a dead squirrel pasted on his head.

133. Dojo yaburi (1982)
Speaking of Lone Wolf, I recently watched Tomisaburô Wakayama in this adaptation of the short story Ame agaru. Sadly, this 80s effort is nowhere near as good as the 1999 adaption. Though there are some fleeting moments of pleasure to be had here, overall this film is but cheap matinée fare. Not one for the books then.

With this rather unusual and unique take on the samurai film genre, director Shinya "Tetsuo" Tsukamoto delivers a harsh lesson in Edo period brutality. The film explores the psyche of a swordsman who is highly skilled but has yet to master the final lesson of being a samurai, namely the killing of his opponent. Pain, mental breakdown and an ever-pervading sense of doom is the name of the game. The actors all turn in good performances, in the particular the director himself who stars as an elderly but oh so deadly ronin.
There's no happy ending for anyone here - that final scene will stay with me for quite some time. An easy addition to my master list then.

Well, this sure was different. The rather unlikable lead character is the most cowardly and inept samurai imaginable. When the highly skilled sword instructor of his clan skips town after cutting down some jealous clan members, our protagonist decides to offer his services as executioner to redeem himself (and his sister whom nobody wants to marry because of his poor reputation). Seeing as he has no sword skill whatseover, he comes up with a quite unique strategy for defeating his opponent...

Tetsuro Tanba's performance as sword master is a joy to watch - without him I doubt I'd have made it to the end. I soon found myself rooting for Tanba's character to snuff that pesky excuse of a samurai and bring matters to a close - surely not what the director was aiming for?
Overall, this film is too much of a one-trick pony - the grand strategy routine of the protagonist gets tedious fast. Not list material then I'm sorry to report.
