Conquer The World Challenge
Image

Goal:
Watch a film from as many different countries as you can. One film per country counts; there are some questionable titles so if you aren't sure whether a film counts or not, just ask.

Rules:
- A feature film (Anything over 45 minutes) counts as one entry
- A total of 90 minutes of short films count as one entry
- An entire mini-series counts as one entry.
- Rewatches not allowed.

Any films watched for the Conquering Europe and Conquering the World Challenge can be automatically counted. This is just somewhere for those who have started to have extra motivation to finish conquering the world and get bragging rights.
"I do not always know what I want, but I do know what I don't want." - Stanley Kubrick

I've been waiting for this one to become ongoing. I'm in, but I'm going to use a slightly different list of countries. I'm sure there are some of them that haven't yet made a movie, but perhaps by the time I get around to them they will have, I'm expecting this challenge to take quite a few years.

I will be updating this post as I progress.

I'm in for the challenge, start date June 3rd 2012. I'm going to use Mochard's countries list. I expect it will take a looooong time for me to finish this list. :D

First entry : Netherlands - Karakter (1997) - Definitely one of the better Dutch dramas. Deserved its Oscar in my opinion. 9/10

Got two under my belt today:

United Kingdom: Captain's Paradise (Kimmins, 1953).
Morocco: Ali Zaoua, Prince of the Streets (Ayouch, 2000).

Captain's Paradise is a perfectly fine, perfectly harmless, kinda meh comedy. Alec Guinness is perfect (as always), but the movie just isn't racy or funny or crazy enough to really trigger any laughs, rather you watch the whole thing with an occasional smile as events unfold exactly as you predicted.

Ali Zaoua couldn't possibly be more different. Beautifully filmed movie about the rough and tough life of street kids in today's Morocco, using actual street kids to play the roles. And when I say street kids, I mean 8-10 year olds who have the scars, the runny sores and the hard look to prove it. No way you could've gotten that out of middle-class kids hoping for a career in acting. Anyways, the movie is good, the kids outstanding and it's both painful and beautiful (often at the same time) to watch. For those who have Netflix, it's on Instant Watch (at least in the US, maybe not elsewhere).

Sweden: Shame (Bergman, 1968).

Just finished this one, still chewing on it, the ending was unexpected. Not a bad movie, about what war does to people, even those who want no part of it.
Personal film goals for 2019.

Russia - Beloe solntse pustyni (1970)

I think I must have missed lots of cultural references in this movie, because I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be a surreal movie, but that's what it felt like to me. It does have adventure and some humor, but I'm at a loss how so many people classify it as a comedy. Maybe I'm just too squeamish about people being killed. 7/10

I'm going to count non-existent countries as well because there's only a few of them
Yugoslavia
Ko to tamo peva - 8/10
Not as good as The Marathon family and if you don't like Balkan comedies this won't change your mind, but I found it pretty consistently amusing. The comedy mostly bubbles up from the absurdity of the situation and the strange characters and while the pacing lacks energy it's a short enough film that it all works rather well.

Japan - Samurai Rebellion (1967) aka Joi-uchi: Hairyo tsuma shimatsu

Great performance by Toshiro Mifune, but I felt the movie as a whole was lacking something. After thinking about it a bit I think it's the relationship between the son and his wife. They're supposed to be this couple so in love, that they inspire the father (Mifune) to great deeds, but personally I felt they had little to no chemistry. Still, a pretty good samurai movie. 7.5/10

I gave it the same rating! People call this and the Marathon family mafia films...If Ko To Tamo Peva is a mafia film, I would love to see all the Balkan 'mafia' films!

USA - City Girl (1930)

A simple story, but lovingly told. Acting across the board was very good. I think I prefer this one to Sunrise, which I also liked. Only criticism I have of this movie is that the ending felt rushed and left some plotlines unresolved. Apparently Murnau had some troubles with the studio (they wanted to make this a talkie) and left the movie before it was finished, so some assistents took over, which might explain my uneasy feeling about the ending. But despite the somewhat rushed ending I loved this movie. 9/10

Since I'm trying to keep up with the Imdb Top 250 and this one has popped in and out a few times :

South Korea - Salinui chueok (2003) aka Memories of Murder

Interesting Korean take on the crime thriller/serial killer investigation where the detectives get way too involved in the case. Nice cinematography and atmosphere, also I found the ending to be quite powerful and definitely unhollywoodlike. 8.5/10

Memories of Murder is a very good movie, I agree. I liked how it managed to both be an unusual "whodunnit" movie, social commentary (on a Korea still ruled by the military, back then) and a personal drama. If you liked Memories of Murder you might like The Host (Gwoemul) by the same director. Probably the best monster movie out there.
Personal film goals for 2019.

Czech Republic - Kocár do Vídne (1966) aka Carriage to Vienna

Pretty intense war drama. I liked the chatty German soldier. 7/10

Hong Kong - Chun gwong cha sit (1997) aka Happy Together

Movie about a gay relationship that's falling apart. Having the Hong Kong guys in the foreign environment of Argentina adds to their alienation. I liked the second part of the movie better, probably because it had less of the Po-Wing character, who I found annoying (which he probably was supposed to be). 8/10

Just watched: Finland - Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö (1990) - 6.5/10

Wasn't overly enamoured with my first Finnish film although I would like to see some more films by Aki Kaurismaki.

I have a discovering the world list on MUBI. I will probably do my own updates on my own list or thread. But I only have 60-something countries. Need to get moving on it!

Realy liked it myself, but Kaurismäki's films are pretty divisive even in Finland, many people can't stand him.

Anyway, it would be fun if someone non-Finnish watched some other Finnish films than Kaurismäki's for a change :P But I guess they aren't available to many, I don't even know how many of our "classics" (in quotes, because many of our most popular films do suck) have ever been released outside of Finland. Not that our film industry is anything special, but anyway. I've been meaning to explore the filmography of Matti Kassila, one of the most acclaimed Finnish directors of the 1950s and 1960s, have two of his films on DVD but haven't yet watched them (have seen only one of his films to date).

Germany - Vampyr (1932)

Maybe this was scary and suspenseful in 1932, but I just found this movie slow, disjointed and overacted. People talk about the dreamlike quality of this film, but I don't see it. I guess Dreyer is a director I don't click with (not a big fan of La passion de Jeanne d'Arc either). 4/10

Just watched: Germany - Das Millionenspiel (1970) - 8.5/10

Really enjoyed this made for TV movie from 1970. Was a top recommendation on criticker for sci-fi films so I thought I would give it a go and I wasn't disappointed. It may have a couple of flaws and a bit unrealistic in places but it didn't stop my enjoyment of it. I would have said it was a spoof on reality tv but I don't think they had reality tv back then as we know it now!

There's some good looking Finnish New Wave films by Mikko Niskanen and Risto Jarva:

These are on my watchlist, should get around to watching them soon...

Mikko Niskanen - Käpy selän alla AKA Under Your Skin (1966)

Mikko Niskanen - Lapualaismorsian AKA Girl of Finland (1967)

Mikko Niskanen - Asfalttilampaat AKA Asphalt Lambs (1968)

Yeah, been meaning to watch some of Niskanen's films too, especially Kahdeksan surmanluotia (Eight Deadly Shots), although it's actually a mini-series.

In case anyone here is looking for a film from the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

Image

It's directed by none other than Djo Munga and it's called Viva Riva (2010). Don't expect to find a Congolese film that tops this one anytime soon. In the words of Roger Ebert...

And finally, a couple of pics for our American friends:

I was going to go for Pièces d'identités as it is on the fespaco list but i'd rather go with a rec from you Monty B) So changing it to Viva Riva :)

No doubt I will watch Pièces d'identités sooner or later anyway!

Was surprised that this was from the Philippines but it is - I liked it for the type of film it was - slightly above my expectations :)

Italy - Il grande silenzio (1968) aka The Great Silence - 8/10

Unfortunately I saw this with an awful English dub. I definitely need to track down the Italian original to see if it's better. Luckily, even with the bad English dub, there was still enough to enjoy. The snow setting makes for some striking images. Jean-Louis Trintignant as the silent hero and Klaus Kinski as the villain were great and the ending is as un-Hollywood as you can get.

Just watched: 40. Yugoslavia - Ko to tamo peva (1980) - 4/10

It takes a special comedy to get on my humour radar and this film hardly registered. Thinking about it, it wasn't terrible but not for my liking.

Finally someone else who doesn't love it! I've been sitting stunned at how many people actually like it.

Just watched Eggs (1995) - 5.5/10 for my Norwegian entry only to discover that I have already watched a film from Norway and it's by the same director.

Perhaps I should choose the country first then watch the film rather than the the other way round - all good though as I now only need 6 more checks for bronze on the Amanda list :)

Not sure where to start, if I should just post the new ones from this month. There are 15 countries that I haven't seen films from (that I'm aiming to see films from this month & next). Then that should bring my total up to about 85. In a couple years, I want to get that figure up to 100, of course.

Chi l'ha vista morire? (Lado, 1972). Italian giallo movie with George Lazenby (aka. the man with the shortest James Bond career ever). It was not bad, but doesn't reach the heights of, say, Suspiria.
Personal film goals for 2019.

Sweden - Sånger från andra våningen (2000) aka Songs from the Second Floor - 7/10

A movie about desperation and alienation and a critique of our society. At least that's my interpretation. The movie is so full of symbolism that multiple interpretations are possible I guess. Personally I thought they overdid it a bit with the absurdity and bizarreness, but it was an interesting movie to watch nevertheless.
